by Anonymousreply 3August 4, 2020 4:29 PM

The Israelis are bombing or what, more info needed please?

by Anonymousreply 4August 4, 2020 4:30 PM

Yikes. A firecracker factory (or ammunition factory) would make sense. You can see dozens of little mini-explosions going off in the smoke before the big one.

by Anonymousreply 5August 4, 2020 4:31 PM

Sweetie, I’m dealing with an R naught of 1.17 and a hurricane rolling through my state. I don’t have time to worry about little 70s era conflicts in the Middle East, mmkay?

r7 It would probably have more to do with the Hariri verdict--i.e. Hezbollah than the Israelis.

Although it looked like a fire first, then an explosion, which isn't the traditional bomb blast (not that that discounts a terror attack).

by Anonymousreply 16August 4, 2020 4:55 PM

The past few years have been a horror for Lebanon. People are basically starving to death because their bank accounts were used in a large-scale Ponzi scheme and drained by the government. Now this.

Europe’s meddling in the Middle East and drawing of nonsensical geopolitical boundaries over the 20th century (Like the cia sabotaging of Iran back in the day) has caused so much pain and suffering in the Middle East

by Anonymousreply 17August 4, 2020 4:55 PM

Everything to do with Lebanese internal politics, nothing to do with Israel.

Not that DL's antisemites will care.

r17 ADR, but that doesn't happen in a vacuum. There were plenty of willing Lebanese, especially Maronite, who were happy to take advantage of their own people/country. It's not all foreign actors, although obviously I'm not trying to downplay it.

by Anonymousreply 43August 4, 2020 5:52 PM

r33 there was mention in the Reuters article that Israel had long claimed Hezbollah was storing weapons or ammunition in the area, so it's not a bad assumption to make that Israel would have sabotaged it. Someone's been doing that in Iran lately, too.

by Anonymousreply 44August 4, 2020 5:57 PM

That thing looked like a nuclear bomb went off. That was no “fireworks explosion.”

by Anonymousreply 45August 4, 2020 6:02 PM

Iran is doing that to Iran. R44, let's not lie about it.

by Anonymousreply 46August 4, 2020 6:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 55August 4, 2020 6:34 PM

The Lebanese Interior Minister has said that ammonium nitrate was stored in the port, which is what caused the explosion, local media reported.

This is used in agricultural fertilizer but is easily co-opted to make explosive devices, such as that used in the Oklahoma City bombings.

by Anonymousreply 102August 4, 2020 9:34 PM

r97 I understand that, but their economy is also on the brink of collapse from government corruption. That can easily lead to corners being cut at storage facilities. Honestly, I'd give it 50/50 it was what they are reporting-an accident vs deliberate ignition.

To the person upthread re: why didn't people filming from high-rise windows move. They're used to car bombs and/or suicide bombers which can be destructive, but don't cause shock waves like that. By the time they registered what they were seeing it would be too late. Also, there was an initial plume of grey/white smoke which would indicate a 'conventional' explosion.

by Anonymousreply 103August 4, 2020 9:41 PM

It's obvious from the videos, the people filming thought they were just filming a big fire. They had no idea it was about to explode like that.

The scale of the destruction caused by the explosion is horrific. Beirut is a relatively small city so this destruction will have a massive impact.

by Anonymousreply 104August 4, 2020 9:49 PM

You can also clearly see what seem to be fireworks or something like that going off right before the big explosion, in R23's 'What the fuck?' video.

Looks very similar to the explosion in port city of Tianjin, China in 2015. 173 people were killed. Ammonium nitrate was also the cause.

Water being used to put out the nitrate fire came in contact with another chemical, calcium carbide. This released high flammable gas into the air, causing a second earth rocking blast.

Stupid to keep a warehouse of explosives at the port, but then we have nuclear power plants near populated cities that can render than uninhabitable for ten thousand years, coming soon to a metro near you.

My favorite thing about this thread is that there is some queen who claims to be an expert on all fireworks warehouse explosions, as if there can't be variations or unknown circumstances. Classic.

[quote] who claims to be an expert on all fireworks warehouse explosions, as if there can't be variations or unknown circumstances.

Especially in a lunatic asylum like Lebanon, where the strongmen of 18 ethno-religious confessions are in an unending war for power and control. Where conspiracy theories, deflection and scapegoating are preferred to anything within light years of reality, let alone truth, both of which can and very likely will get you a very painful death by car-bomb, vehicular ramming, gun, poison, and/or being shot out of the sky.

by Anonymousreply 162August 5, 2020 9:46 AM

Was it Israel again? Do we know yet?

by Anonymousreply 163August 5, 2020 11:15 AM

R163, in what way does destabilising Lebanon help Israel?

by Anonymousreply 164August 5, 2020 11:24 AM

R163 When have anti-semits ever been rational.

by Anonymousreply 165August 5, 2020 11:38 AM

So it was a fire started by a welder?

by Anonymousreply 166August 5, 2020 11:44 AM

R164 it’s not about destabilizing Lebanon per se, it’s about a power struggle with Iran who backs the Shia government. Like a proxy war.

by Anonymousreply 167August 5, 2020 11:46 AM

It was started by black trans women just like Stonewall!

Seriously you have to ask?

R170 has obviously forgotten the missile bombardments on Israel by Hezbullah.

From Ya Libnan, the mouthpiece of the Sunni Future Movement party headed by Sa'ad Hariri. Given its scathing criticism of Nasrallah and the fist on his leash, Iran, Hariri's days are definitely numbered.

R103 I can't comment on 'government corruption'. And I don't want to suggest a basic lack of common sense.

But I know sensible governments, armies and navies store their bombs and hazardous materials a good distance AWAY from civilian housing.

I live a few miles from a naval depot and I know that any visiting ship carrying armaments must unload them and have them stored away in a safe enclosed area a further few miles away tor the duration of their visit.

Al Jazeera: Beirut’s city governor Marwan Abboud said up to 300,000 people have lost their homes.

by Anonymousreply 181August 5, 2020 1:42 PM

"[bold]I think[/bold] there are between 250,000 and 300,000 people who are now without homes,"

I am wondering why we never hear the explosion in R160 's video like we do in others.

by Anonymousreply 193August 5, 2020 5:12 PM

It was an ammonium nitrate cache put there by Hezbollah some time ago. They store explosives in civilian areas to use people as human shields, like Hamas does. But go on blaming the Israelis, SJW crazies What a tragedy.

The Moscow Times:

Nearly 3,000 tons of a highly explosive fertilizer that caused Tuesday’s devastating blast in Beirut came from a ship owned by a Russian businessman, the Mediazona news website reported Wednesday, citing Lebanese television and members of the ship’s crew.

Lebanese authorities in 2014 confiscated 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate from a Moldovan ship called the Rhosus, the country’s LBCI television channel reported overnight, citing sources at a Supreme Defense Council meeting.

The Rhosus is owned by Igor Grechushkin, a Russian national and resident of Cyprus, Mediazona cited the ship’s crew members as saying. The ship had been traveling from Georgia to Mozambique in 2013 when it experienced a malfunction and made an unscheduled stop in Beirut.

by Anonymousreply 195August 5, 2020 5:36 PM

"What the actual fuck?" is my new ringtone. If you ever see a fire of that magnitude, put down your phone and RUN to a corridor that has no windows. Or just go inside and hit the deck. Yeah, social media is great because we have actual footage, but how many of those people were injured by flying glass when their sliding doors and windows exploded inward?
