Would you snoop around your neighbor's apartment if you had the chance?

I'm looking after my neighbors' tabby and flowers while they're away on holiday this week. I barely know the people but they obviously thought I'm trustworthy enough to be left with the key of their home for some reason. I'd love to snoop around the place a bit but I'm paranoid they have secret cams or something like that hidden somewhere and I sure wouldn't want to be recorded sniffing their dad's underwear (yeah, he's pretty hot) or reading mom's secret diaries. Should I do it or not?

by Anonymousreply 25August 4, 2020 8:54 PM

That's why I don't go on holiday trips: nosy neighbors.

by Anonymousreply 1August 3, 2020 6:10 PM

in this age of cams, no, OP, better safe than sorry.

by Anonymousreply 2August 3, 2020 6:12 PM

Also, even if you could do it without getting caught, you become a fraud, not to be trusted, betraying the people who trusted you.

by Anonymousreply 3August 3, 2020 6:13 PM

I would have most definitely snooped and I did when o was a teenage dog/home sitter but now with cameras and a bit more adult character, I would not

by Anonymousreply 4August 3, 2020 6:15 PM

I would absolutely assume there were cameras set up there that they are monitoring from their laptop or phone.

by Anonymousreply 5August 3, 2020 6:23 PM

Absolutely not.

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2020 6:24 PM

No. Assume you are being recorded. What I would do is hang out at their place to spend a lot of time with the cat, and see what you can innocently observe just by being there. Types of books, mail, DVR queue and Netflix history, food in the pantry, drugs in the bathroom cabinet, etc.

Do it and report your findings back to us. Take photos too.

You should’ve done a poll. I wouldn’t snoop because I could care less what they got or do. But there are a lot of Gladys Kravitz here.

Nothing ever good comes from snooping, OP.

by Anonymousreply 10August 3, 2020 6:39 PM

You've never been in someone else's place op? People pretty much have the same stuff unless they're hiding a body. Find some porn and pot? Wow!

by Anonymousreply 11August 3, 2020 6:43 PM

I agree with R10. I just don't want to know, nope, nope, nope.

[quote]Nothing ever good comes from snooping, OP.

I honestly thought the author of that quote was going to be Mrs. Patsy Ramsey, formerly of Boulder, CO.

Embarrassed to admit that I’m guilty. Our neighbours have a big house 3 floors and a big garden. I used to take care of their pond, garden and indoor plants several times a year. The first time I got the key I checked every room in the house. Curiosity got the better of me. I didn’t check all the closets and drawers btw. The attic was really nice with a lovely view over the park. The neighbours did say we could enjoy having a drink on their sun parlour or the garden whenever we felt like it. The were referring to their beer and wine stash in the garage.....

by Anonymousreply 14August 3, 2020 6:45 PM

When I was a teenager babysitter, I snooped a lot. As an adult, I don’t because cameras!

But I’ll snoop in the bathroom. Because if they have hidden cameras in their bathroom, they’ve got bigger problems than a nosy bitch looking to see what’s in their medicine cabinet.

by Anonymousreply 15August 3, 2020 6:48 PM

Did they say you weren’t allowed to wander around the apartment OP?

by Anonymousreply 16August 3, 2020 6:48 PM

Go for it, but call out, "Here kitty kitty!" as you are rifling through drawers and closets to make it look like you were searching for the cat if questioned about it.

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2020 6:55 PM

OP, listen to the voice of reason: Act in haste, repent at leisure. Don't do it.

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2020 7:03 PM

OP, we all know that you've snooped by now. So, tell us, what did you find?

by Anonymousreply 19August 3, 2020 7:07 PM

OP, this is why I hate you.

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2020 7:11 PM

I only snooped when I was a teen wanting to see what kind of porn my friend's dad jerked off to (mediocre big studio straight porn, boo).

by Anonymousreply 21August 3, 2020 7:25 PM

Actually I lived in a large apartment with my father from young childhood until my early 30s. Then I took the studio apartment right next door, which was almost like still living in the same apartment as we cut through the wall from one apartment to the other only with a door in between should either of us want privacy. He died in 2004 and I could not afford both or the larger apartment on my own so I had to give it up. A lovely middle aged couple took the large apartment and are perfect neighbors, I never hear a peep out of them. They don't smoke or play music or even TV, maybe it's in the one of the bedrooms, which I would not hear anyway. On the rare occasions we see each other in the hallway we smile. That's it. There is no friendship or anything like that.

I don't want to snoop, but I wish so much I could go inside to see the apartment I grew up in and see if any of our things are still there like the kitchen appliances that we bought or if they have been replaced. I'd love to stand in my old bedroom for a minute or two. I wonder if I would feel the spirit of my dad or the pets we had if I was in there, probably not.

Oh well, I still have my memories.

by Anonymousreply 22August 3, 2020 8:39 PM

I did once and stole his underwear out of the clothes basket.

by Anonymousreply 23August 3, 2020 9:36 PM

I'll listen to R15's advice and check only the bathroom (to see if daddy left some used underwear in the laundry basket). And if there are any cameras outside the bathroom it will look like I went in there just to take a wiz.

by Anonymousreply 24August 4, 2020 8:42 PM

R22: My stepbrother went back to the house he grew up in years after he and his family had moved out. The new owners were very nice and let him in to look around. Of course, EVERYthing was different, and that made him sad. (But, really, why should the new owners keep it as a shrine to my stepbrother's youth? What was he expecting?) He also said that seeing the house in its current state largely erased all his memories of what the the place looked like when he was young. When he thought of the house now, he saw the current owner's interiors. So don't go next door.

Re: Snooping -- I'll walk around and look at things, but I won't touch them, pick them up or move them, no opening drawers or closets. Because, as many people above have said: cameras. That said, as a teenage babysitter I snooped freely once the kids were in bed. Never really found anything other than some Playboys.
