Melbourne Declares "State Of Emergency" As COVID-19 Outbreak Worsens

Once the model of containment for the world, Australia's outbreak now grows.

Across the US Sun Belt, the number of coronavirus cases reported daily has continued to decline, but the outbreak is intensifying across Europe, and - most alarmingly - in Melbourne, which is becoming a new global symbol of SARS-CoV-2's intransigence, as one of the most restrictive lockdowns in the world has failed to squelch the latest outbreak.

Although the alarmism peddled in some corners of the media probably isn't warranted, Melbourne has seen its daily confirmed totals climb to new records day after day. With the public pressure mounting three weeks after the new lockdown began (with no progress having been made), state officials have tightened restrictions and declared a state of disaster on Sunday.

The decision comes as Victoria State Premier Daniel Andrews announced 671 new cases in the past 24 hours with seven deaths. More than 380 people were being treated in the hospital, with 38 in intensive care.

Andrews' state of disaster will begin at 6pm Sunday, and allow police the added powers to enforce social distancing restrictions.

Metropolitan Melbourne will be under a curfew limiting movement between 8 pm and 5 am. These new restrictions will be in place for (at least) six weeks.

Australia has recorded about 17,000 infections and ~200 deaths so far, with the majority of these in Victoria.

7 whole deaths? Adorable.

Because that's when the virus wakes up and starts it's day!

This is their winter, so it's working out very well for them.

R4

That is not correct. The rolling average is going down. I can't believe what a shithole the NY Times has become. A one day spike isn't a trend.

The article linked at R4 was from June 14. It was perfectly accurate when it was published.

R5, here's another article saying (pretty much) the same thing, dated July 13 (two weeks ago).

And, R5, if won't believe your lying eyes, here's the data from yesterday*. Notice that swath of red across.. the sun belt?

To future readers: today is August 2, 2020, and this link is real-time data, which is going to change (especially if Joe Biden wins).

r5 there's a graph and chart right there that shows you are incorrect. Wishful thinking is not data.

Wonder how much conditioned/recycled air contributes to cycling the viral particles in Sunbelt and Gulf States indoor spaces in July - August.

Six months earlier, in the 32C-40C Australian heat, the Down Under folk were congratulating themselves for their sensible, science-guided policy to minimize the percentage and severity of confirmed cases.

None, there was an excellent video about that here, but it featured an actual physicist so I'm sure you couldn't bothered to actually LEARN anything.

Funny how Victoria had a thousand less cases than New South Wales a month ago and how it has 66% of all Covid cases in Australia.
