White House willing to cut a stimulus deal without corporate ‘liability shield,’ breaking with McConnell

The White House is willing to cut a deal with Democrats that leaves out Senate Republican legislation aimed at protecting employers, hospitals and schools from coronavirus-related lawsuits, according to two people with knowledge of internal White House planning.

The White House wants and is pushing for the “liability shield” as a top priority but would be willing to sign off on a deal that lacks the legal protections, those people said. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) controls the Senate floor and could shoot down any deal that leaves out what he has said is a necessary component of any stimulus package.

It’s getting messy between the rethugs and the White House.

Anyone noticing this in the last few days?

Why the sudden split?

Once again the press runs cover for a White House that lies constantly.

Trump pulled this stunt before, remember?

There should be no protections for putting lives at risk. None.

He just likes to torment them.

And they love it. Masochists. The lot.

He line to torment the Dems or the repubs?

Both. But the Rethugs love it.

It's such a ridiculous thing to fight about it. Nobody with the probable exception of nursing home patients is going to be able to prove in court they got the from disease a particular setting absent some evidence of gross mismanagement or ignoring whatever regulations were in place to limit or prevent its spread. We think Herman Cain got it at Trump's rally but I doubt anyone can prove that he did.

McConnell will fold on this because Trump is desperate to start signing all those checks again before the Treasury sends them out. And to keep the unemployment boost going, knowing he's in even worse shape if he can't make it happen.

They only have a few hours to get this done.

Otherwise my guess is the markets will completely tank next week.

There is no good news left out there on the horizon to keep it steady

R8 the whole point is to protect gross mismanagement and ignoring regs. GOP staffers on the hill are being pressured to NOT wear masks because protecting themselves shows their bosses to be full of shit.

by Anonymousreply 10July 31, 2020 5:16 PM

The article is Strategic and incorrect.

by Anonymousreply 11July 31, 2020 5:25 PM

Blanket immunity for corporate predators who push people to break safety protocols, but NO push for testing availability, mandatory masks, universal healthcare or social distancing.

Say goodbye to your post, Mitch. You might not even have a seat next year.

Republicans want to protect this kind of corporate scum:

I don’t leave the house without a gas mask, not a fabric covering or even N95. A full mask. If I am forced back to the office I will know exactly where I got it from. Fuck these pieces of shit.

DT has never been loved by GOP establishment, and feeling is mutual.

As with the Moral Majority many republicans tolerated or tolerate DT because he was of use to the party, but now things are getting messy as Trump reverts to what he does best; self preservation.

For an incumbent POTUS DT's polling numbers going into GOP convention are shockingly bad. All the man cares about at this point is winning reelection, more so not losing to Joe Biden. If that means throwing republicans under a bus, so be it.....

What is the GOP going to do? They handed DT the nomination on a plate, so outcome of convention in August is merely a formality. Suppose a coup or something could happen at RNC convention, but that likely would lead to a nasty and bitter public squabble as DT never will go quietly.

DT is an opportunist; Mitch McConnell and others in GOP surely must worry that given Trump's tenuous ties to republican party if reelected and faced a democratic majority in senate (or close enough), he will work with them rather than fight, this if for nothing else to shore up legacy of his presidency.

This farce about WH willing to cut a deal without liability shield is good theatrics, but nothing more.
