Federal judge's son shot and killed, husband injured in attack at their NJ home

The son of a federal judge in Newark, New Jersey, has been shot and killed, and her husband shot and injured in an attack at the family's home, according to law enforcement sources.

The judge, Esther Salas, was not hurt.

Francis "Mac" Womack, the mayor of North Brunswick, New Jersey, tells ABC News that the judge's son has died.

The condition of husband was not immediately known, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone told ABC News.

The judge's son opened the door to the family's North Brunswick home at about 5 p.m. Sunday and was immediately shot, sources said.

"He was shot through the heart," Womack said. The son was a freshman at Catholic University.

The judge's husband was then shot multiple times, according to sources.

A suspect "remains at-large," a law enforcement official said.

Investigators have preliminary information that the shootings were carried out by someone dressed as a FedEx driver, according to multiple law enforcement sources.

The mayor said investigators are now "trying to get a hard make on the vehicle" to try and track the suspect.

"As a judge, she had threats from time to time, but everyone is saying that recently there had not been any," said Womack, who is personal friends with the judge and her husband.

In a statement, the FBI Newark office said, "The FBI is investigating a shooting that occurred at the home of Judge Esther Salas in North Brunswick Township, New Jersey earlier this evening, July 19. We are looking for one subject and ask that anyone who thinks they may have relevant information please call FBI Newark at 973-792-3001. We are working closely with our state and local partners and will provide additional updates when available."

The New Jersey State Police, the North Brunswick Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's office are also involved in the investigation. The U.S. Marshals have been called to provide the judge with a security detail, according to a law enforcement official.

Judge Salas had received threats in the past, the sources said.

Authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between those prior threats and the shooting, or whether it possibly involved the husband's work as a criminal defense attorney.

"I know Judge Salas and her husband well, and was proud to recommend her to President Obama for nomination to New Jersey's federal bench," New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez said in a statement. "My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

Salas is the first Latina to serve on the federal bench in New Jersey.

New Jersey?

Sounds like a Mafia hit job.

We know, Adolf, we know.

by Anonymousreply 2July 20, 2020 11:11 AM

"The son and her husband" - what?

by Anonymousreply 3July 20, 2020 11:25 AM

Doesn't sound like the Italian mob. Leaving you to live knowing your loved ones were murdered/punished--that's a message. That's a different enforcer. Maybe Russian.

by Anonymousreply 4July 20, 2020 11:39 AM

The Deplorables are already saying it was ordered by Hillary.

by Anonymousreply 5July 20, 2020 11:59 AM

Anyone else think it was the son that was the target?

by Anonymousreply 6July 20, 2020 12:16 PM

She's had death threats, apparently. She has the Epstein case assigned to her.

by Anonymousreply 7July 20, 2020 12:22 PM

Deutsche Bank/Epstein case. The Judge got the case 4 days ago.

[quote]The Deplorables are already saying it was ordered by Hillary.

Not me. Sunday is my day for raping babies while making pizza.

by Anonymousreply 9July 20, 2020 12:27 PM

What the hell? And of course ABC news puts out two lines of copy and sells 35 ads against but where is the actual reporting on this?

by Anonymousreply 10July 20, 2020 12:30 PM

I think that's very possible, r6. Shooting the judge in the DB investigation is only going to shine even more light on them and, seedy as DB is, I'm not sure they would have a judge shot.

by Anonymousreply 11July 20, 2020 12:40 PM

Someone doesn't want to be exposed in the Epstein case? Who could that be. This reminds me of how they handled judges in Italy in the 90's, 2000's. Warning sent.

by Anonymousreply 12July 20, 2020 12:40 PM

This isn't actually part of the Epstein case r12 and has nothing to do with it. It's a lawsuit against DB by investors, claiming that DB has been reckless for, amongst other things, not properly monitoring high-risk clients such as Epstein.

by Anonymousreply 13July 20, 2020 1:54 PM

No she hasn't had the Epstein case assigned to her, r7.

by Anonymousreply 14July 20, 2020 1:54 PM

Is that true, R8?

Some people here are disputing that.

by Anonymousreply 15July 20, 2020 2:10 PM

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story!

by Anonymousreply 16July 20, 2020 2:12 PM

Some deplorable probably thought it was immigrants moving to the neighborhood.

by Anonymousreply 17July 20, 2020 2:20 PM

Did she have a hand in any recent cases against a defendant that they would want to get revenge on her? Makes no sense that she hasn’t done anything negative against the bank case yet.

by Anonymousreply 18July 20, 2020 2:22 PM

Who's disputing that, R15? It was reported in The New York Times:

"Last week, she was assigned to oversee a class-action lawsuit filed by a group of investors against Deutsche Bank, contending that the firm failed to flag questionable transactions that were made from the account of the financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died last August while in jail awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges."

The judge is overseeing a lawsuit brought against Deutsche Bank by investors for false and misleading information and generally being negligent, e.g. not properly monitoring clients like Epstein. She's not looking into the Epstein case.

by Anonymousreply 20July 20, 2020 3:50 PM

Damn. This is like the Mexican Drug cartels and the Columbians killing judges. Boom, like that.

by Anonymousreply 21July 20, 2020 4:19 PM

She involved was involved in the Guidici fraud case and some mafioso.

by Anonymousreply 22July 20, 2020 5:23 PM

The poor lady must be devastated.

Her son was murdered because of her.

Though not because of her, but her job.

That is so fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 23July 20, 2020 5:30 PM

[quote] The suspect was later found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound near Liberty, New York, multiple law enforcement sources told ABC News. A municipal employee discovered the body in a car.

[quote] The deceased suspect was an attorney who had a case before Judge Salas in 2015, sources said. A FedEx package addressed to Judge Salas was discovered in the car, sources said.

WTF?

by Anonymousreply 25July 20, 2020 6:40 PM

I was just about to post that, R24.

I feel so bad for this lady. She was just doing her job.

For this asshole to go after her son? It's despicable.

Authorities believe an attorney found dead in New York Monday was the shooter who killed a New Jersey federal judge's son and wounded her husband, law enforcement sources with knowledge told NBC New York.

The man's body was found the town of Rockland, in the Catskills. A senior law enforcement official said the FBI and police were investigating whether the man died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds and whether a gun found at the scene was the one used to kill Judge Esther Salas' son and wound her husband.

No other details on the man were immediately available.

Salas' son and husband were shot at their home in New Brunswick around 5 p.m. Sunday. The 20-year-old son later died, while the husband was critically wounded.

Preliminary indications are that the husband answered the door and was shot multiple times; the son came running to the door and was shot as well before the gunman fled, the sources said. Judge Salas was believed to be in the basement at the time of the shooting, and she was not injured.

The FBI, U.S. Marshals, New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General are all investigating, and the FBI had tweeted it was looking for "one subject" in the shooting. It's not clear what led authorities to the location in Liberty where the suspect was found dead.

Some reports indicated the shooter may have been dressed as some sort of delivery driver. FedEx issued a statement Monday saying only it was fully cooperating with authorities and, “Our deepest sympathies are with Judge Salas and her family at this time."

The motive wasn't immediately clear. Law enforcement officials said one theory was a possible home invasion robbery gone wrong, but stressed all theories were still on the table.

“The FBI is investigating a shooting that took place at the home of Judge Esther Salas in North Brunswick Township, NJ early this evening July 19. We are working closely with our state and local partners and will provide additional updates when available," the bureau said in a statement.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal pledged the full support of his office as well as the resources of the New Jersey State Police in the probe. The US Marshals are also assisting.

Salas, a judge of the U.S. District Court for New Jersey in Newark, has been in her seat for nine years. Before that she spent five years as a magistrate judge, and nine years prior to that as a federal public defender.

She is the first Latina to serve on the federal bench in New Jersey.

Salas has presided over a number of high-profile trials in her tenure, including the trial of former "Real Housewife" Teresa Giudice.

More recently, Salas has presided over an ongoing lawsuit brought by Deutsche Bank investors who claim the company made false and misleading statements about its anti-money laundering policies and failed to monitor “high-risk” customers including convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Her husband, Mark Anderl, is a well-regarded criminal defense attorney. Their son, Daniel, was the only child and he was studying law to follow in his parents' footsteps. He graduated cum laude with honors from St. Joseph's High School in 2018 and was actively enrolled at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. The university plans to hold a mass for Daniel's family 7 p.m. Monday, to be held over zoom, and counseling resources have been made available for students.

"Daniel was a rising junior, enrolled for classes beginning in the next few weeks. He turned 20 last week," a statement from the university read.

New Jersey's political leaders were quick to react to the shootings.

"I know Judge Salas and her husband well, and was proud to recommend her to President Obama for nomination to New Jersey’s federal bench. My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice," Sen. Bob Menendez said in a statement.

I call bullshit!!!! The same people who hit the judge's family, "suicided" this lawyer. What a nice neat ending.

by Anonymousreply 29July 20, 2020 8:07 PM

R29, that's what I think. Like the Godfather 2 when they tried to kill Michael Corleone's family and even Michael knew the murderers were already dead.

Her poor child. He was her only kid.

Holy shit. The youngest sent out one of her buttonmen to do this.

Sure r29, r30, the mob hired an attorney as a hitman.

by Anonymousreply 33July 20, 2020 9:59 PM

R33 - The mob maybe just ordered that attorney to do the job and then suicided him.

The US is like the Third World country now.

by Anonymousreply 34July 20, 2020 10:30 PM

Or maybe people should stop jumping to conclusions on the basis of nothing, except that they misread one sentence in a newspaper article and didn't bother to read the whole article but think they're so clever they just know what happened.

Suspect In Slaying Of Federal Judge’s Son Was An M7 MBA

The suspect in the shooting death of the son of a federal judge in New Jersey was an attorney and Class of 1997 Columbia Business School MBA who himself was found dead Monday (July 20), a day after the attack occurred.

Authorities say Roy Den Hollander, a New York City attorney who described himself on LinkedIn as a “civil rights litigator,” was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound the day after an attack on the North Brunswick, New Jersey home of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas by a man dressed in a FedEx delivery uniform. Salas’ 20-year-old son, Daniel Anderl, a student at Catholic University, was killed, and the judge’s husband, criminal defense lawyer Mark Anderl, 63, was wounded. The elder Anderl underwent surgery Sunday and was listed in stable condition Monday. Salas was in the basement of the home when the attack occurred and was not injured.

Hollander was found dead in a car in Rockland in Sullivan County, N.Y., about two hours from Salas’ home. “There’s a pretty good level of confidence he’s the guy,” an official with knowledge of the case told The New York Times.

According to an ABC News report, a gunman knocked on the door of the Salas-Anderl home at about 5 p.m. Sunday. “Daniel Anderl answered the door and was shot first, before his father was also shot.” The younger Anderl was shot through the heart, North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack told reporters.

“Salas had received threats in the past, sources said. Authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between those prior threats and the shooting, or whether it possibly involved the husband’s work as a criminal defense attorney.

“‘As a judge, she had threats from time to time, but everyone is saying that recently there had not been any,’ said Mayor Womack, who is personal friends with the judge and her husband.”

A senior law enforcement official told NBC News in New York that authorities were looking into whether a package or envelope addressed to Salas was found near the suspect’s body. The suspect was reportedly dressed as a FedEx employee, but it was not known whether he had an official connection to the company. None is listed on his LinkedIn page.

“We are aware of the media reports and are fully cooperating with investigating authorities,” FedEx said in a statement to media.

Hollander got his law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1985. His LinkedIn profile includes this interesting item: From July 1999 to March 2000 he worked as a manager who “Improved and managed Kroll’s delivery of intelligence and security in the former Soviet Union.” Kroll is an international consulting firm headquartered in New York. Among Hollander’s duties, he “Reorganized operations that increased service quality and reduced turnaround time for conducting investigations, processing information, and preparing intelligence reports.”

Hollander had a case before Salas in 2015, challenging the military’s male-only draft. It’s unclear whether that case sparked the attack on her home, but according to NBC, “In the recently published memoir Hollander left online, he called Salas ‘a lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama.’ Referring to the 2015 case Salas presided over, Hollander said he ‘wanted to ask the Judge out, but thought she might hold me in contempt.'”

by Anonymousreply 43July 23, 2020 12:21 AM

In 2008, Hollander went on Fox to talk to host Neil Cavuto about his lawsuit against Columbia University for offering a women’s studies program without also offering a “men’s studies program.” That same year the attorney’s “war on feminism” was written about by columnist Meghan Daum in the Los Angeles Times. His anti-female writings are all over the Internet. More recently, he managed a website, Been-Scammed.com, that includes such topics as “Feminazis” and urges men to “wake up,” claiming that “In the media, government, courts, education, and business, the Feminists violate your rights with impunity while taking what they don’t deserve and can’t handle.” His online resume lists his primary experience as “Anti-Feminist litigation, investigations, and advice on general corporate matters.” It also says he earned his Columbia MBA “with honors.”

Judge Salas is based in Newark, N.J. About the attack on her home and the murder of her son, U.S. Attorney General William Barr said Monday: “This kind of lawless, evil action carried out against a member of the federal judiciary will not be tolerated, and I have ordered the full resources of the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service to investigate the matter.” Added New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez: “I know Judge Salas and her husband well, and was proud to recommend her to President Obama for nomination to New Jersey’s federal bench. My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”

That is completely heartbreaking, R48.

Almost as if he had a sense of what was coming.

The killer deserves the death penalty.

by Anonymousreply 49August 3, 2020 5:22 PM

Um, the killer shot himself. He gave himself the death penalty. By supporting the death penalty you're just legitimizing right-wing views like the ones the murderer had.

by Anonymousreply 50August 3, 2020 5:42 PM

I support the death penalty for this kind of murder and for child rape.

by Anonymousreply 51August 3, 2020 8:43 PM

Love the people who are so concerned with "child rape" but don't give a shit about adults who are raped

by Anonymousreply 52August 3, 2020 9:17 PM

But was it rape-rape?

by Anonymousreply 53August 3, 2020 10:34 PM

Of course I care about adults who are raped too. You're misundertanding me, a stranger on the internet.

by Anonymousreply 54August 4, 2020 3:23 PM

r54, if you want to live in a country that executes people who did not commit murder, maybe you should move to Saudi Arabia or Iran.
