Petition Calls For Trader Joe’s To Change ‘Racist’ Packaging

Responding to calls for Trader Joe’s to stop labeling its international food products with ethnic-sounding names, the grocery store chain said it has been in a years long process of repackaging those products and will soon complete the work.

In the latest call to re-name racially-charged brands and logos, nearly 1,000 people have signed an online petition urging the retail giant to rename products labeled “Trader Ming’s,” “Trader José,” or “Trader Giotto’s” to refer to Chinese, Mexican or Italian food, respectively, SFGate reported.

So fucking stupid. Better close the whole store, because I’m sure the food and store is tired of being MISGENDERED!!! Should call it Colonial Thieving Jo’s They/Them

by Anonymousreply 1July 19, 2020 6:11 PM

Joseph is a Hebrew name, technically.

by Anonymousreply 2July 19, 2020 6:12 PM

I blame the whole Bernie/Woke/Trans white college student movement for this bullshit.

They are going to destroy everything they can grab a hold of, but they're basically just little fucking fascists.

by Anonymousreply 3July 19, 2020 6:12 PM

This race war narrative is getting out of control.

by Anonymousreply 4July 19, 2020 6:13 PM
Should call it Colonial Thieving Jo’s They/Them

Thieving Jo? All I did was hotwire the school van to the Chugalug Bar!

by Anonymousreply 5July 19, 2020 6:14 PM

R3, Bernie? Nope! These kinds of people hate Bernie because he’s a white male and because they don’t see him as intersectional. He thinks economic justice is more important than Seperating everyone up by race.

These kinds of folks supported Biden and Elizabeth Warren

by Anonymousreply 6July 19, 2020 6:14 PM

This is Karenism writ large.

by Anonymousreply 7July 19, 2020 6:15 PM

Why is it "Trader Ming's" and not "Trader Jiang's" or something else with a J sound?

by Anonymousreply 8July 19, 2020 6:16 PM

"Trader Ming"? This is actually a thing they did?

by Anonymousreply 9July 19, 2020 6:17 PM

But it's just a lot easier for me to autofill a petition than it is to do something hard about like immigration reform or something-- how am I even going to share that on my Facebook/Insta/Twitter?

by Anonymousreply 10July 19, 2020 6:17 PM

All this crap is made by the same people who make regular grocery store foods.

by Anonymousreply 11July 19, 2020 6:18 PM

Yes, it's a cutesy thing they do to change the house-brand "Trader Joe" name on "ethnic" foods according to the culture. Or is it "Ming " that you have more of a problem with?

by Anonymousreply 12July 19, 2020 6:18 PM

Oh no! I really like the frozen wonton soup.

by Anonymousreply 13July 19, 2020 6:18 PM

Make it a law that only scuzzy-looking str8 white guys can be used to sell food.

by Anonymousreply 14July 19, 2020 6:20 PM

Woah!!!! A 1000 signatures!

Hell hath no fury like a 1,000 signatures!

Kinda like being intimidated by the Twitter 'Tards, only.....much less impressive.

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2020 6:21 PM

R3 they're also going for the low hanging fruit. Toppling a statue may make you feel better but it changes nothing.

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2020 6:21 PM

“Trader Giotto" ?

In Italian it would be "Trader Giuseppe".

But either way, no Italian is going to complain. If anything, giving the name an Italian twist will be seen as a compliment.

by Anonymousreply 17July 19, 2020 6:21 PM

The feta cheese is also from…

Dun dun [bold]DUNNNNNNNNNN…[/bold]

Israel.

by Anonymousreply 18July 19, 2020 6:23 PM

Liberal white women are out of control. They have nothing better to do than complain about the most mundane things since no guy wants to touch their ugly junk.

Hispanic people don't think about shit like this.

Attention liberal white women, quit trying to start shit on our behalf. We don't care and we don't need you to exploit us any further. Fuck off!!

by Anonymousreply 19July 19, 2020 6:24 PM
Hispanic people don't think about shit like this.

Clearly you haven't been to a major urban area.

by Anonymousreply 20July 19, 2020 6:27 PM

My Japanese husband says:

"If Trader Ming's was claiming to make sushi, that would be offensive. Otherwise, I don't get it. I've always thought it harmless and silly that they got creative with their naming."

by Anonymousreply 21July 19, 2020 6:27 PM

Is it cutesy? It feels racist....just call everything Trader Joes. Wtf is Trader Ming?

by Anonymousreply 22July 19, 2020 6:27 PM

First World problems.

by Anonymousreply 23July 19, 2020 6:27 PM

I hope Trader Jamal’s cornbread isn’t affected.

by Anonymousreply 25July 19, 2020 6:30 PM

What bugs me the most is THIS SHIT is what Americans are focused on.

NOT the rich 1% raping the country for decades. Americans are the dumbest CUNTS on the planet! We deserve this bullshit because WE ARE DUMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 26July 19, 2020 6:31 PM

Sum Ting Wong

by Anonymousreply 27July 19, 2020 6:32 PM

I have a bigger problem with the fact that they rarely name the country of origin on their labels. I thought this was a law now? It makes me feel like they are deliberately obfuscating because they know certain locations would be seen as undesirable (China, for example) and then no one would buy them. Even Aldi lists origins on their products.

by Anonymousreply 28July 19, 2020 6:38 PM

R12, I'd probably select a name that wasn't usually associated with "The Merciless", myself.

It's a step up from Trader Fu Manchu, but not by much.

by Anonymousreply 29July 19, 2020 7:00 PM

What about me, dude? I'm AWESOME.

by Anonymousreply 30July 19, 2020 7:03 PM

They wouldn't dare use Trader Mohammed's for middle eastern items. (Trader Mo's might be problematic, too.)

by Anonymousreply 31July 19, 2020 7:37 PM

R31 Especially if TJ's dared to portray Muhammad with a cheeky picture. Sultan Abdullah's Hummus might work though.

by Anonymousreply 32July 19, 2020 8:07 PM

R28, when looking at those, make sure you pay attention to whether it says 'made in', 'manufactured in', or 'distributed by' because that's how companies are getting around. It will say it's distributed by some company in New Jersey or Georgia or something because they have a corporate center or warehouse there but it's actually MADE in China.

by Anonymousreply 33July 19, 2020 8:19 PM

R19, I’ve been thinking about this for some time now, “ dear white people, please stop telling me by what I should be offended.”

by Anonymousreply 34July 19, 2020 8:23 PM

R24, I choked while laughing! Trader Jamal...OMG.

by Anonymousreply 35July 19, 2020 8:28 PM

Racism no longer has any meaning. It’s whatever you want, folks.

by Anonymousreply 36July 19, 2020 8:33 PM

I used to shop there and notice a juice called Heart of Darkness which is now labeled as Mango Passionfruit.

by Anonymousreply 37July 19, 2020 8:39 PM

Frankly,I always thought that Trader Jose was fine.

But, Trader Ming and Trader Giotto are racist.

Now Trader Qiao, Trader Giuseppe, Trader Joos, Trader Pepe - those are fine.

by Anonymousreply 38July 19, 2020 8:40 PM

Now I’m offended that there hasn’t been a Trader Jagdish label on all the Indian food items they sell.

by Anonymousreply 39July 19, 2020 8:44 PM

The Trader Karen’s Saltine Crackers are Karenphobic.

by Anonymousreply 40July 19, 2020 8:50 PM

r40 You're mistaken. They only use the Trader Karen label on their feminine hygiene products.

by Anonymousreply 41July 19, 2020 8:53 PM

Is the gefilte fish from Trader Jew?

by Anonymousreply 42July 19, 2020 10:58 PM

They also have a Trader Jacques french soap-don't forget to be offended by that.

by Anonymousreply 43July 19, 2020 11:15 PM

Trader Jacques is offensive.

Trade Jose is fine.

by Anonymousreply 44July 19, 2020 11:25 PM
I blame the whole Bernie/Woke/Trans white college student movement for this bullshit.

I blame their parents for not whipping their asses often enough.

by Anonymousreply 45July 19, 2020 11:42 PM

I think TJ’s naming practices are uneven. Their frozen gyoza lineup (chicken, pork, vegetable, Thai shrimp) are still Trader Joe’s without any Japanese renaming. However the shrimp dumpling is “Thai Shrimp Gyoza” with gyoza being a Japanese type dumpling. So if anything TJ is guilty of mislabeling and lumping all Asian food as interchangeable.

by Anonymousreply 46July 19, 2020 11:42 PM

But isn't marketing ethnic foods under "Joe" cultural appropriation?

by Anonymousreply 47July 19, 2020 11:42 PM

Maybe they should just forbid Trader Joe's to sell ethnic foods. Or maybe they should just burn the place down.

by Anonymousreply 48July 19, 2020 11:43 PM

"Trading" is a problematic, capitalistic/colonialist construct. WE DEMAND that the company be renamed "Groveling Supplicator Joe's" and that POC always be served first, at half price. And Trans Women of Color be given their food free as befits their station at the head of the line of those victimized by Raper Joe's.

by Anonymousreply 49July 19, 2020 11:48 PM

WHAT R45 SAID!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 50July 19, 2020 11:59 PM

r18 I guess that's why it tastes like shit.

by Anonymousreply 51July 20, 2020 12:00 AM

Are these companies even listing to real POC on Twitter? Most of them couldn't care less about this shit. They want the police to stop killing them. A very reasonable request.

by Anonymousreply 52July 20, 2020 12:17 AM

Trader Joe's evolved out a of small chain called Pronto Markets. Should they go back to that name, or would it be offensive to Italians?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 53July 20, 2020 4:25 AM

It did, r53?

by Anonymousreply 54July 20, 2020 4:43 AM

r54 Yes.

by Anonymousreply 55July 20, 2020 4:49 AM

Trader Joe's is named after its founder, Joe Coulombe. The company began in 1958 as a Greater Los Angeles area chain known as Pronto Market convenience stores. Coulombe felt the original Pronto Markets were too similar to 7-Eleven and the competition would be disastrous.

Coulombe developed the idea of the Trader Joe's South Seas motif while on vacation in the Caribbean. The Tiki culture fad of the 1960s was fresh in the cultural memory and he had noticed that Americans were traveling more and were acquiring tastes they had trouble satisfying in American supermarkets at the time.

How has Trader Jemima's not been mentioned? TJ buys the rights to Aunt Jemima, and "Viola"...the label will feature Viola Davis, of course.

by Anonymousreply 60July 20, 2020 5:54 AM

R42 WINS THE INTERNET!!! Well played, R42!

by Anonymousreply 61July 20, 2020 6:46 AM
How has Trader Jemima's not been mentioned? TJ buys the rights to Aunt Jemima

That's even worse: Slave Trader Jemima. That would mean she was buying and selling her own people.

by Anonymousreply 62July 20, 2020 6:48 AM

R62, she's Traitor Jemima!

by Anonymousreply 63July 20, 2020 11:58 AM

Should change the name to Traitor Trump's.

by Anonymousreply 64July 20, 2020 12:22 PM

Oddly enough, Trader Jerkoff in the Salad Bar When No One's Looking has not been used.

by Anonymousreply 65July 20, 2020 2:01 PM

I shrugged when they took down Aunt Jemima, because I would never buy that product. Coming for Trader Joe's hits close to home, since I buy those items all the time.

by Anonymousreply 70July 20, 2020 2:52 PM

I seriously doubt there was any unkind or racist intent when Trader Joe’s named those products. It seems dated and unnecessary though.

by Anonymousreply 71July 20, 2020 2:54 PM

It's just tacky. Trader Joe's is the name - I don't need to be reminded that soy sauce is Asian, thank you.

by Anonymousreply 72July 20, 2020 3:00 PM

Getting so sick and tired of this shit.

by Anonymousreply 73July 20, 2020 3:10 PM

Biden needs to tell these people to get a life instead of placating their nonsense. That’s why he’s going to lose.

by Anonymousreply 74July 20, 2020 3:40 PM

This is fucking lunacy. A playful celebration of cultural homage read as some profound insult. Fuck every petition-signing asshole with no life and too much free time. The “woke” kids Of today are fascist monsters. I hooe they all die of corona.

by Anonymousreply 75July 20, 2020 3:47 PM

Someone or some corporation just needs to tell these woke SJWs to fuck off. It's become a joke, taking all the energy out of what we really should be focused on. Income inequality, an inequitable justice system and a tax system that hands the keys to the treasury to the 1%. But labels at Trader Joe's is just so much easier. All these micro-offenses will completely derail any correction of the macro issues.

by Anonymousreply 76July 20, 2020 3:51 PM

Experience tells us that once these SJWs have drawn blood from a victim, they know they have a live one, and they'll keep doubling down. So with that in mind, and sarcasm aside, I would expect to see these complaints shortly:

-- The Hawaiian/Aloha shirts worn by employees and the faux-Polynesian/Tiki imagery used in branding is sacred to the Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Islands and should be dropped immediately, and an apology/restitutions made.

-- The sales of "ethnic" foods, under whatever brand name, is cultural appropriation and must be halted. Even if (say) the manufacturer subcontracted to make the frozen tamales is actually owned by a Mexican family, TJ's takes a cut of profits, which is exploitation. And they sell the food to just anyone with money, regardless of whether that person has a genetic right to eat tamales.

by Anonymousreply 77July 20, 2020 4:22 PM

What a shitty time to be alive. Let's just go back to no frills for the snowflakes.

by Anonymousreply 79July 20, 2020 4:36 PM

R78, make sure that we refer to those as labels without color, not white. Thank you.

by Anonymousreply 80July 20, 2020 4:38 PM

R53, cool. Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 81July 20, 2020 4:47 PM

R80, thanks for your vile racist contribution, suggesting that "labels without color" are superior. Examine your behavior, sit down, be silent, and listen to the voices of POC, and LEARN TO DO BETTER.

The correct term is "nonmelanated labels."

by Anonymousreply 82July 20, 2020 4:52 PM
Biden needs to tell these people to get a life instead of placating their nonsense.

We have to get in first.

Then he can remind them of reality and grown up life - hopefully in an elucidating but non-offensive way. Or just ignore them.

by Anonymousreply 83July 20, 2020 4:57 PM

R41 They ought to name those Trader Josephine.

by Anonymousreply 84July 21, 2020 2:57 PM

There's no sufficient word to describe the irony of people who do nothing but have total meltdowns any time a brand changes their product calling others hypersensitive. It's the Dunning-Kruger effect. You're so much of a snowflake you don't realize how much of a snowflake you are.

Normal response to Aunt Jemima changing it's packaging: Great.

Irrational one: PC MADNESS IS DESTROYING THE FABRIC OF SOCIETY. NO MORE "TRADER MING'S" ORANGE CHICKEN? THIS IS THE FUTURE LIBERALS WANT.

It's just laughable the levels of derangement in and clinging you see expressed in these threads.

by Anonymousreply 88July 21, 2020 6:15 PM

They better not mess with Trader Jo’s Ranch Dressing!

by Anonymousreply 89July 21, 2020 6:21 PM

R85 I don't think anyone's REALLY that torn up about white people selling and consuming very poor quality salsa but don't quote me on that.

by Anonymousreply 90July 21, 2020 6:21 PM

I'm sorry but how is changing the name on the packaging of their ethnic foods to stereotypical foreign names like Trader Ming and Trader Jose somehow less racist than just keeping it as Trader Joe's?

What are they gonna change the name on their samosas to? Trader Apu? And what about the name on their humus? Trader Osama?

I am now going to buy everything I can at Trader Joe's!

THANK YOU, TRADER JOES! Your innocent, humorous ethnic marketing is one of the reasons we love you. Thank you for not caving in to the misguided social justice warriors!

by Anonymousreply 102July 31, 2020 1:30 AM

by Anonymousreply 103July 31, 2020 2:55 AM

I can't speak for every location, but shopping in person at my TJ's has been a pretty pleasant and safe experience. Everyone is checked at the door to make sure they are masked, admission is limited to a certain amount of people, carts are cleaned and handed to you as you enter. The other shoppers have been quite civilized, as well, nothing like the wacko videos that have been going around.
