Petition Calls For Trader Joe’s To Change ‘Racist’ Packaging
Responding to calls for Trader Joe’s to stop labeling its international food products with ethnic-sounding names, the grocery store chain said it has been in a years long process of repackaging those products and will soon complete the work.
In the latest call to re-name racially-charged brands and logos, nearly 1,000 people have signed an online petition urging the retail giant to rename products labeled “Trader Ming’s,” “Trader José,” or “Trader Giotto’s” to refer to Chinese, Mexican or Italian food, respectively, SFGate reported.

I have a bigger problem with the fact that they rarely name the country of origin on their labels. I thought this was a law now? It makes me feel like they are deliberately obfuscating because they know certain locations would be seen as undesirable (China, for example) and then no one would buy them. Even Aldi lists origins on their products.

I think TJ’s naming practices are uneven. Their frozen gyoza lineup (chicken, pork, vegetable, Thai shrimp) are still Trader Joe’s without any Japanese renaming. However the shrimp dumpling is “Thai Shrimp Gyoza” with gyoza being a Japanese type dumpling. So if anything TJ is guilty of mislabeling and lumping all Asian food as interchangeable.

Trader Joe's evolved out a of small chain called Pronto Markets. Should they go back to that name, or would it be offensive to Italians?
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 53 | July 20, 2020 4:25 AM

Trader Joe's is named after its founder, Joe Coulombe. The company began in 1958 as a Greater Los Angeles area chain known as Pronto Market convenience stores. Coulombe felt the original Pronto Markets were too similar to 7-Eleven and the competition would be disastrous.
Coulombe developed the idea of the Trader Joe's South Seas motif while on vacation in the Caribbean. The Tiki culture fad of the 1960s was fresh in the cultural memory and he had noticed that Americans were traveling more and were acquiring tastes they had trouble satisfying in American supermarkets at the time.

Someone or some corporation just needs to tell these woke SJWs to fuck off. It's become a joke, taking all the energy out of what we really should be focused on. Income inequality, an inequitable justice system and a tax system that hands the keys to the treasury to the 1%. But labels at Trader Joe's is just so much easier. All these micro-offenses will completely derail any correction of the macro issues.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | July 20, 2020 3:51 PM
|
Experience tells us that once these SJWs have drawn blood from a victim, they know they have a live one, and they'll keep doubling down. So with that in mind, and sarcasm aside, I would expect to see these complaints shortly:
-- The Hawaiian/Aloha shirts worn by employees and the faux-Polynesian/Tiki imagery used in branding is sacred to the Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Islands and should be dropped immediately, and an apology/restitutions made.
-- The sales of "ethnic" foods, under whatever brand name, is cultural appropriation and must be halted. Even if (say) the manufacturer subcontracted to make the frozen tamales is actually owned by a Mexican family, TJ's takes a cut of profits, which is exploitation. And they sell the food to just anyone with money, regardless of whether that person has a genetic right to eat tamales.
