WaPo; Rufus Wainwright thinks he has had it so hard

Complains about bad reception of his operas.

Life is so cruel.

He is so annoying

by Anonymousreply 1July 13, 2020 1:22 AM

I haven’t liked him since his Judy album.

by Anonymousreply 2July 13, 2020 1:23 AM

I've always disliked him since in an interview he stated he intentionally became friends with George W. Bush's daughter Barbara while he was president just because it would get him so close to the center of power, and then he bitched that he found her to be vapid.

He, of all people, should know how mercenary it is to become friends with someone only because their parents are famous.

[quote]This is Wainwright in a bottle: dramatic, humorous and in proximity to musical legends

The shade!

by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2020 1:29 AM

He's an unlikable creep. Always was.

by Anonymousreply 5July 13, 2020 1:33 AM

I've rarely found other gay men who like him. his audience seems to be mostly straight women.

I've also rarely seen a child of celebrities who had less humility about it.

by Anonymousreply 6July 13, 2020 1:35 AM

I’ve seen him in concert. He puts on a great show.

by Anonymousreply 7July 13, 2020 1:38 AM

[quote] Rufus and Loudon have been working hard at reconciling after years of estrangement, both “aware of this necessity to be in each other’s lives in a profound way,” Rufus said.

Mary! Why do celebrities always talk this way? Everything is "profound" or "fierce" to them.

by Anonymousreply 8July 13, 2020 1:38 AM

A mention of Betty Lynn, even!

by Anonymousreply 9July 13, 2020 1:43 AM

I went to see him in concert in 2010 during the "All Days Are Nights" tour in a very large auditorium. It was mostly empty. A few of us were scattered here and there. Rufus strode onstage wearing a flowing black gown that made him look like the evil queen from Snow White.

Before he sat at the piano, Rufus announced that no one was to applaud until the entire concert was finished. He wanted total silence between songs.

Of course, some queen applauded loudly after the first song was over. Rufus turned to the audience and boomed, "WHO WAS THAT???" Nothing but light chuckles and sighs from the audience.

The whole concert was a grand failure, and in his tours, Miss Rufus hasn't even come close to my region since.

Rufus' sister, Lucy, opened for him and was just as talented; very warm and friendly with the audience.

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2020 1:44 AM

I went to see him in 2010 as well, R10! People were mocking him during the intermission for the "no applause" request.

by Anonymousreply 11July 13, 2020 2:49 PM

Cannot abide his pretensions and his whiny voice.

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2020 3:32 PM

[quote]“When I look at my situation of bringing up a kid on my own, it just all becomes very heightened, and a little bit dangerous,”

On your own, Rufus? You have a husband, and also the "parenting partnership" with the biological mother.

by Anonymousreply 13July 13, 2020 4:12 PM

The gray beard qualifies him for Eldergay status.

Rufus has become a cranky Eldergay. It seems like a very short time ago that he was the Latest Twink on the Block.

by Anonymousreply 14July 13, 2020 4:17 PM

I love FOREVER AND A YEAR...it’s such a beautiful song.

by Anonymousreply 15July 13, 2020 5:09 PM

I like him and I love this song. The original was recorded by the McGarrigle sisters (His mother Kate and her sister Anna). After his mother died, Rufus recorded this version with Anna and his sister Martha. There's also a nice version by Linda Ronstadt.

Prima Donna was a pile of shite.

by Anonymousreply 17July 13, 2020 5:38 PM

Pretentious slut with a smegma filled stanksleeve.

by Anonymousreply 18July 13, 2020 5:52 PM

I saw him at the Fox in Oakland a few years ago and it was a good show. However, he is very uneven and his voice not always that great. He also jumps around as to styles in order to look like a musical genius, which he really isn’t. He is a unique performer and talent and I appreciate him. But, I see why some din’t.

by Anonymousreply 19July 19, 2020 10:36 PM

^don’t

by Anonymousreply 20July 19, 2020 10:37 PM

He’s not very attractive, is he?

by Anonymousreply 21July 19, 2020 10:39 PM

I know what boatwright and a playwright and a cartwright make, but what does a wainwright make?

Other than annoying music.

by Anonymousreply 22July 19, 2020 10:52 PM

I thought Rufus Wainwright was the guy who directed “Air Force One.”

by Anonymousreply 23July 19, 2020 10:55 PM

r22, A wainwright is a maker and repairer of wagons.

by Anonymousreply 24July 19, 2020 11:46 PM

I think he's magnificent. He's my favorite out gay artist, by far. I don't disagree that the earlier albums are, on the whole, better than the new stuff (WANT is fantastic in its variety, almost like a gay White Album), but the new one is pretty good. The only thing that I feel has been happening on recent albums is the slower songs are terribly boring. I find myself going back to the up-tempo songs the most. "Damsel in Distress" is terrific off the new album.

by Anonymousreply 25July 19, 2020 11:54 PM

Too bad he did not write a part for the world’s tiniest violin.

No one likes him? It doesn't look like he's starving so surely he must have fans?

by Anonymousreply 27July 20, 2020 12:03 AM

sad little man.....

by Anonymousreply 28July 20, 2020 1:54 AM

has anyone here had him? is he a top or a bottom?

by Anonymousreply 29August 5, 2020 3:47 AM

He was more fun when he was on drugs

by Anonymousreply 30August 5, 2020 3:52 AM

I like his "California"

by Anonymousreply 31August 5, 2020 4:36 AM

He seems tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 32August 5, 2020 4:47 AM

The last song I liked from him is "My phones on vibrate for you".

by Anonymousreply 33August 5, 2020 4:55 AM

Top or bottom?

by Anonymousreply 34August 5, 2020 1:25 PM

My friend said when he went through his meth phase he fucked around with Rufus and Rufus was a top

by Anonymousreply 35August 5, 2020 1:43 PM

DL's always been underwhelmed by RW, and I always beg to differ. Saw him live first for the 'Release The Stars' LP - he ended with a Garland segment - and had a great night. So, he had me at Hello.

I can see why RW puts so many off, but his best work easily makes up for the lesser. On a good night, his voice indeed soars. I like his restless ambition, which means he sometimes strikes gold.

by Anonymousreply 36August 5, 2020 3:12 PM

While I have to respect his talent and was a fan of his first album, he's really too too too much. He talks too much, he tries too many things he isn't particularly good at (the JUDY fiasco), he whines when he should be humble, he doesn't seem to understand how to forge a constructive relationship with his audience and he confides to reporters as if he's talking to a therapist. Like a lot of narcissistic people he seems to lack boundaries and any sense of how he might appear from the outside in - even as he works overtime to control perceptions of himself. Also, he has ZERO star mystique and so gets little respect. I often feel embarrassed for him and there's a strong sense that he must be a nightmare in person - one of those impossible people with both an inflated ego and low self esteem.

by Anonymousreply 37August 5, 2020 3:58 PM

[quote]he fucked around with Rufus and Rufus was a top

...he didn't fuck around with Rufus

by Anonymousreply 38August 6, 2020 3:19 AM

Have you, R38?

by Anonymousreply 39August 6, 2020 3:24 AM

You don't need to have fucked around with him to know he isn't a top.

That said, I am acquainted with an escort who had fucked around with him. Submissive bottom who likes it rough was what he said, and I have little reason to doubt.

by Anonymousreply 40August 6, 2020 6:12 AM

I just don't like his voice.

by Anonymousreply 41August 6, 2020 6:28 AM

He's a gifted songwriter, but I've found most of his work since Release the Stars to be lacking, although I haven't listened to the new album yet. He is still a great live performer, I've seen him many times over the years and he's never disappointed. I saw him with the Philly Pops Orchestra 2 years ago and his voice sounded wonderful with their accompaniment.

In regards to his operas, I saw Prima Donna when it was done at BAM and it was a major disappointment. I'm not a huge opera fan, but I went with a friend who studied classical voice and had a small measure of success as an opera singer and she was also not a fan. At least the subject matter of his 2nd opera (big gay love story about Roman Emperor Hadrian) is more interesting to me, and he played one song from it that was enjoyable at a concert so I'll check it out when it streams online next week but I'm not expecting anything incredible.

by Anonymousreply 42August 6, 2020 6:55 AM

I'm now listening to the Rufus albums I have on my computer: the first, self-titled one; Poses; Want One. Those were his first three. I guess I became less aware of him at some point.
