Chelsea Hotel

Anyone here ever stay at the Chelsea Hotel or eaten at the adjoined restaurant , El Quijote?

It seems so beatnik to this farm hand.

I stayed there in April 1997. Loved it!

This was around the block from Splash, right?

The 250-unit hotel is located at 222 West 23rd Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, in the neighborhood of Chelsea.

There's a local show here in NYC called "Neighborhood Slice" that focuses on a different NYC neighborhood each week. This week the subject was Chelsea and they interviewed this hairstylist named Gerald DeCock who has lived in the Hotel Chelsea for years now. He seems like a fun guy with a lot of stories to tell.

The hotel has been undergoing construction for years now - not sure if the condo plan is dead - most of the long term tenants were evicted, but not all. Loved going to El Quijote For dinner or just meeting friends at the bar - it was a total 40s/50s time capsule - both the food and the interior. The mural seems to have been preserved, along with some of the interior, but there are major changes and it is still unfinished; Unfortunately it will probably end up like Minetta Tavern, “tasteful“ interior taxidermy with an overpriced high-end menu that is nothing like the charming original.
