Mississippi has finally decided to change their traitorous and racist flag

I guess we should be proud that our most backwards state finally joined the 20th century.

[Quote]Mississippi lawmakers voted on Sunday to bring down, once and for all, the state flag dominated by the Confederate battle emblem that has flown for 126 years, adding a punctuation point to years of efforts to take down Confederate symbols across the South. The flag, the only state banner left in the country with overt Confederate imagery, served for many as an inescapable symbol of Mississippi’s racial scars and of the consequences of that racial history in defining perceptions of the state.

They need to do a great deal more there than just change a flag.

by Anonymousreply 1June 28, 2020 11:17 PM

The new flag, to be designed, must say “In God We Trust.”

Let’s hope it’s not a picture of blond Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 2June 28, 2020 11:18 PM

Thank God.

That was just insane that they kept it for years after every other state with the Confederate symbol on it had changed their flags.

by Anonymousreply 3June 28, 2020 11:24 PM

I'm shocked it passed both houses of the Republican-dominated legislature by wide margins. The Trump-loving governor says he'll sign it. Mississippi voters will pick a new flag without a Confederate emblem in November.

This is an amazing turn of events, and all because of the Floyd crisis.

Change happens after people show force.

I think even a lot of right wingers know deep down that having your state flag be about the confederacy is pretty dumb r4.

by Anonymousreply 5June 28, 2020 11:33 PM

The alternative flag, which some municipalities and public colleges and universities have been using for a couple of years now, is a serviceable piece of flag design.

Wow, that flag is really nasty. Some of us up Nawth had no idea some of this stuff still went on in the shithole states.

by Anonymousreply 7June 28, 2020 11:42 PM

The confederate flag should have been eliminated long ago. It's a divisive symbol that does no one any good.

by Anonymousreply 8June 29, 2020 12:23 AM

For AA's the Confederate flag is akin to the Nazi flag for Jews. It is deeply insulting and racist and it is long past time that the state flags with Confederate symbols on them were retired permanently.

But frankly, the Confederate flag should be an insult to ALL OF US for it represents a time when a bunch of people decided to commit TREASON and break off from the United States of America to try to start their own country within our country. This was TREASONOUS behavior and they shouldn't have gotten off so easily after they lost the war IMO.

Again, they LOST the war (whether they want to accept that or not) and therefore their flag should have been thrown on the garbage heap of history a long time ago.

by Anonymousreply 9June 29, 2020 12:44 AM

I cannot believe they are doing this. It seems so... decent.

So glad that Myrlie Evers lived to see this happen.

Not surprised a state as progressive as Mississippi acted on this so quickly. After all, Mississippi ratified the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery in 2013.

The pace of Southern progress is dizzying.

OH DEAR.

by Anonymousreply 14June 29, 2020 2:44 AM

All well and good, but the "in god we trust" proviso is every bit as repulsive as the confederate flag.

by Anonymousreply 15June 29, 2020 4:09 AM

It should be a naked picture of Melania.

by Anonymousreply 16June 29, 2020 4:32 AM

Haha Even conservative MS is fucking over the racists.

by Anonymousreply 17June 29, 2020 4:45 AM

It’s not about force. The video moved public opinion, after the cumulative effect of prior cases. There was no ambiguity here. No possible defense of the officers. If anything, the riots almost diffused the public’s reaction. Fortunately, the protestors put a stop to them.

by Anonymousreply 18June 29, 2020 4:52 AM

If legislators in Mississippi can vote to remove its flag then the times have changed. Not attitudes, racism will continue to be the law of the land. However, Black residents of Mississippi can finally take pride in one small victory in that godforsaken place.

by Anonymousreply 19June 29, 2020 5:11 AM

See it’s not just liberals. People are over pretending that flag represents anything other than racism and little else.

by Anonymousreply 20June 29, 2020 5:19 AM

R6 Who were the fascists who designed that!?

by Anonymousreply 21June 29, 2020 8:56 AM

I see now, what really got them to change was college sports. The SEC and NCAA said no play off events in the state until they change it.

They decided to stay in the Union after all? Awwww.

by Anonymousreply 23June 29, 2020 1:12 PM

Still a surprise, R22. Mississippi is one of the poorest or the poorest state in the U.S. because it hardly ever bows to economic pressure. Racism is its treasured heritage.

Thank God for Mississippi!

R25 Same

by Anonymousreply 26June 29, 2020 11:49 PM

Mississippi is the poorest state by a decent margin. Next closest is West Virginia.

WV = District 12 in the coming games. WV doesn't have a racist flag, so poverty is not the issue.

by Anonymousreply 28June 30, 2020 2:21 AM

I was genuinely interested in what Billy Joe has to say about this.

(seriously)
