"John Wayne Airport on Chopping Block Due to Actor's Extreme Racism"

I hate most "cancel culture" shit, but the most annoying fraus I know fetishize the past, so this will piss them off.

CAROL WAYNE INTERNATIONAL!

by Anonymousreply 1June 27, 2020 11:43 PM

Why does that bitch have an airport named after him in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 2June 27, 2020 11:44 PM

It's sad John Wayne's gay past is not more widely known.

by Anonymousreply 3June 27, 2020 11:45 PM

they really should wait about 100 years after someone's death before they even consider erecting a statue or naming something after them.

by Anonymousreply 5June 27, 2020 11:46 PM

His draft dodging during WWII should be reason enough that it never should have been named for him in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 6June 27, 2020 11:46 PM

Ronald Reagan was a champion racist dog whistler. Strip him of Washington Reagan Airport. Put it back to National Airport. Leave John Fucking Wayne alone.

He was hung and he rocked a man bag and espadrilles. Leave him alone.

by Anonymousreply 7June 27, 2020 11:48 PM

He hated that airport while he was alive!

by Anonymousreply 8June 27, 2020 11:49 PM

..."Oh Ronnie," she enthused, "I wish you could be here to see all these beautiful white people ... black and white people, I mean."

by Anonymousreply 9June 27, 2020 11:50 PM

R6, were 35 year old men with 4 children being drafted in WW2?

I don't think so.

by Anonymousreply 10June 27, 2020 11:51 PM

Seriously R7 Reagan called black people monkeys on Nixon tapes released last year. How has he not been canceled yet?

by Anonymousreply 11June 27, 2020 11:51 PM

I admit it, I'm sick of cancel culture. The real world thing, the thing we need to focus on, is police brutality against black people. All this shit about who gets an airport and statues and everyone being at full shriek on twitter, it's a bore and a distraction. It will sap the energy from the actual problem, and that sucks. But every stupid tween now needs to get into the act with their bullshit and that will eventually be the story and prevent anything actually being done about the real world issue.

by Anonymousreply 12June 27, 2020 11:52 PM

Meh. Who gives a fuck? Not me, that’s for sure.

by Anonymousreply 13June 27, 2020 11:52 PM

He was a real piece of work Asshole. Hope they rename it.

by Anonymousreply 14June 27, 2020 11:54 PM

R10 Wayne got a special exemption from the government because he argued making movies was so damn important. Really, he was just a coward. The grossest thing about that asshole was that when Vietnam rolled around he was outspoken in his beliefs that all draft dodgers and protesters should be hanged. Wayne was a chicken hawk whose tough guy hero screen persona is totally at odds with the coward he was in real life.

by Anonymousreply 15June 27, 2020 11:55 PM

He literally called himself a white supremacist in Playboy Magazine. That’s why The Simpsons have him in hell in one of their Halloween episodes.

by Anonymousreply 16June 27, 2020 11:56 PM

John Wayne Believed in White Supremacy- TRUE

by Anonymousreply 18June 27, 2020 11:57 PM

They should name it for Kobe Bryant. He lived in O.C. and used that airport regularly for his helicopter including the last flight.

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2020 11:57 PM

I want him, and his airport, GONE!

Even one named after John Wayne [italic]Gacy [/italic]would be preferable.

by Anonymousreply 20June 27, 2020 11:57 PM

R1 Plus, his movies were mostly shit.

by Anonymousreply 21June 27, 2020 11:58 PM

I truly don't give a shit if there is a John Wayne Airport in the world. Truly do not give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 22June 28, 2020 12:00 AM

They should rename it for Karl Marx just to fuck with those assholes in Orange County

by Anonymousreply 23June 28, 2020 12:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 28June 28, 2020 3:33 AM

Orange County Airport is what it used to be, and what it should be. Naming airports after people is annoying because you have no idea where the place is if you just know some random name.

I was in school in OC when they came up with that name and stupid statue, and I hated it. The article below is from my alma mater.

by Anonymousreply 33June 28, 2020 5:20 AM
It's weird how ALL the energy goes to the symbolic issues, and pretty much none to the real issues, ever.

The people who have the power to make symbolic change have a reason to do so, either because they want to help make a cultural change or because they think it'll help their bottom line. That's why we're seeing these cultural, symbolic changes.

Meanwhile, the people who can make institutional change, cops and politicians and the like, aren't doing anything because they don't care.

That's why you're seeing more symbolic change than real change.

by Anonymousreply 39June 28, 2020 8:00 AM

What r12 and r25 have said. And if we don’t cancel Trump none of this other shit matters.

That said, I’m petty and if they’re gonna fucking start canceling Golden Girls episodes, then go ahead and cancel real racist POSes like John Wayne and Ronald Reagan (that airport should be next, but of course he’s been sainted so that’ll never happen).

by Anonymousreply 40June 28, 2020 8:35 AM

They can just add "Gacy".

by Anonymousreply 41June 28, 2020 8:40 AM

I’m waiting for the Wokesters to figure out they need to change Robert Moses State Park. He actually was a racist and designed things so poor black people couldn't travel to the ocean beaches of Long Island.

by Anonymousreply 42June 28, 2020 9:42 AM

Marion Michael Morrison (born Marion Robert Morrison; May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed Duke, was an American actor, director, producer and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. He was among the top box office draws for three decades, famous for his roles in Western films.

Wayne was down with the Latinas:

Wayne was married three times and divorced twice. His three wives, one of Spanish American descent and two of Hispanic descent, were Josephine Alicia Saenz, Esperanza Baur, and Pilar Pallete.
They can just add "Gacy".

That was worth a good chuckle.

by Anonymousreply 45June 28, 2020 11:57 AM

He was a known racist in Hollywood. My father told me that he said or did something at an event to insult Cicely Tyson and that it was racist in nature. I regret that I cannot remember the story now.

I didn't care about the airport one way or another. But I never understood why the airport was named for someone who was just a celebrity as opposed to a civic leader, a humanitarian or a philanthropist.

by Anonymousreply 46June 28, 2020 1:40 PM

I ended up watching one of his classics, The Searchers, recently and was taken aback by just how poor an actor he was. The line readings were in a monotone drone and there was nothing at all happening behind the eyes. There was not a hint of vitality or energy in his performance. The contrast to, for example, Gary Cooper, was enormous and made me wonder how he became so big, when there were better actor-stars all around him in those days.

by Anonymousreply 47June 28, 2020 1:42 PM
Yes he had a Peruvian wife, a Mexican wife and a Panamanian wife and his children are mixed race.

by Anonymousreply 50June 28, 2020 3:20 PM
He was a known racist in Hollywood.

In Hollywood?! He literally called himself a white supremacist and didn't want black people in power. It was known everywhere, not just Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 51June 28, 2020 3:36 PM
His children are not mixed race. Their mothers were Hispanic but caucasian. He was a bigot...and a homosexual.

Not gay. Not even bi.

by Anonymousreply 52June 28, 2020 3:37 PM

R52 lol he fucked the gay from The searchers. And that fbi guy

by Anonymousreply 53June 28, 2020 3:39 PM

He didn't fuck any guy. The guy was all about pussy. A total slob and a racist.

by Anonymousreply 54June 28, 2020 3:42 PM

"The Searchers" is visually stunning, but the dialogue is just awful--anachronistically racists and Wayne phones-in his performance despite the presence of taskmaster John Ford.

I suspect he may have exempted Hispanics from his racism. But he's still a racists and a pretty limited actor.

by Anonymousreply 55June 28, 2020 3:43 PM

R54 Just like Delon

by Anonymousreply 56June 28, 2020 3:47 PM

Phoneywood repug icon. Bad actor who fought the Nazi's at Warner Bros like his pal Ronnie.

by Anonymousreply 57June 28, 2020 3:51 PM

R37 That book is known to be full of inaccuracies and outright lies. The book by Scott Eyman is the definitive book on Wayne right now. His second marriage was story and I think both he and his wife were violent but y'know, I wasn't there.

by Anonymousreply 58June 28, 2020 5:39 PM

*stormy

by Anonymousreply 59June 28, 2020 5:39 PM

Naming airports after people is confusing as hell. It should be named after the city - or some geographical reference.

Usually they are names after some generals or politicians of note. John Wayne? It's the only one named after an ACTOR.

It's ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 60June 28, 2020 6:01 PM

"The problem was that the current Latin American wife wasn’t fulfilling her domestic duties — which is why they were divorcing, and why Chata, infuriated and bitter, was alleging horrible things about the Duke in court: that he’d blackened her eye, pulled her from bed and beat her, given her multiple bruises, called her “obscene names,” and was “manhandling her in front of guests”; he “went some place where there were streep teasers [sic], call girls, prostitutes or whatever you want to call them,” she testified. “He came home the next morning very drunk and with a big black bite on his neck ... this was a human being bite.” Wayne’s lawyer countered that Chata was a drunk who “stayed out all night and returned with grass stains on her clothes,” and, during their estrangement, “entertained a male guest at their residence” while Wayne was on set."

In Poland there is Reagan Park

by Anonymousreply 63June 28, 2020 7:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 64June 28, 2020 7:21 PM

"but the most annoying fraus I know fetishize the past, so this will piss them off"

I finally figured it out, "fraus" are DLers themselves!

No woman I've known cared much about John Wayne, he was always a fantasy for straight men

by Anonymousreply 65June 28, 2020 8:02 PM

I’m guessing they named the airport after a fug, white, right wing racist because it’s in Orange County.

by Anonymousreply 66June 28, 2020 8:03 PM

I don't know if it's true but wasn't Chata supposedly a hooker?

by Anonymousreply 67June 28, 2020 8:17 PM

R68, I think people (especially travelers) know that airports have 3-letter abbreviation codes (SFO, CDG, etc.). Airports also have longer, spelled-out names as well.

by Anonymousreply 70June 28, 2020 8:50 PM

Henry and Jane Fonda Airport

They had the right politics.

by Anonymousreply 71June 28, 2020 8:56 PM

They should rename it Joan Crawford Airport.

by Anonymousreply 72June 28, 2020 10:05 PM

Why do we even name airports after people? We should name them after places. Rocky Mountain Airport, Great Plains airport, Puget Sound Airport, Arroyo Airport, Orange Grove Airport. Just pick a local geographic name. Or something that happened in the past like “Revolutionary War Airport” — the one that America’s founders stormed. Or an old Algonquin name meaning “Place Of Overpriced Liquor.”

by Anonymousreply 73June 28, 2020 10:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 84June 29, 2020 2:53 AM

What someone said up thread was on point - John Wayne was an old school Republican - racist, anti-communist, anti-socialism, etc.

He was 'the perfect Republican' to represent Orange County.

by Anonymousreply 85June 29, 2020 2:58 AM

Kobe Bryant? You're joking.

The guy was, at best, a philanderer, and at worst, a rapist.

Marion had a beautiful uncircumcised cock and, was excellent on I Love Lucy!

by Anonymousreply 87June 29, 2020 3:52 AM

r79 I was going to ask for a thread! All I found was this quote from Davis, no idea of it's validity:

“I certainly would have given anything to have worked with John Wayne. He’s the most attractive man who ever walked the Earth I think.”

by Anonymousreply 88June 29, 2020 3:56 AM

I read an interview Bette Davis did, many years ago, and she said John Wayne was a hypocrite for not fighting in WWII when he was so pro-war. He used the excuse that he had children to get out of fighting, but Davis said many men had children and still enlisted because they thought it was their duty as American citizens. She thought Wayne was a coward. She also despised his politics. She didn't like Ronald Reagan either.

by Anonymousreply 89June 29, 2020 4:01 AM

Picture it, Hollywood 1967, the Columbia Pictures lot. Filming has just begun on "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner". Spencer Tracy is far too ill to do the film and is replaced at the last minute by John Wayne. The producers are convinced the Duke can turn out a convincing performance as an ultra-liberal man who has spent his life promoting racial equality. John Wayne loses the Best Actor Oscar by just a few votes to Rod Steiger. A decade later, Hepburn and Wayne would be reunited to do a western movie.

by Anonymousreply 90June 29, 2020 4:01 AM
Marion had a beautiful uncircumcised cock

danke r89, really the worst hypocrisy from Wayne, good for Bette. r92, Trump's like a WWE character, very theatrical, loves hurling insults - but when push comes to shove, he's actually been one of the more restrained Presidents vis a vis foreign wars, drone attacks and the like.

by Anonymousreply 104June 29, 2020 3:43 PM

They did not name John Wayne Airport after the person who was John Wayne. They don't know a thing about John Wayne. Or care. He built an image associated with hyper right wing masculinity and they used his name to associate themselves with that image, too.

R110 there was a great CNN special on The enquirer (worthy of its own thread, actually) that discusses celebrities who paid them off to table salacious stories. Bob Hope was one of them. (Trump, on the other hand, paid to get IN the rag.) He was always nauseating to me and so not funny.

by Anonymousreply 116June 30, 2020 6:18 AM

Great I Love Lucy moment was when Fred Mertz met him and called him "Count" instead of "Duke". ( Knowing Fred and his contrary attitude, hopefully his goal was to piss Marion off) What the hell was he supposed to be the Duke of ., anyway ??? And who names a boy Marion???

by Anonymousreply 118June 30, 2020 6:56 AM

He played make believe for a living, in dumb movies that definitely don’t hold up. He never deserved this level of honor.

Ya gotta love the idiots who think “non-white wife” is proof that he wasn’t racist. Who you sleep with/subjugate/dominate does not absolve your public racism (and sexism) throughout your life.

Also, in 2020 we all know plenty of Jewish, latino and other “non-white” white supremacists. Just because he attracted some wives to indulge his fetishes in exchange for social status and financial security, does not mean his views were acceptable to people of other races even then. It means nothing. Stop embarrassing yourself with your ignorance.
