Trump Seems Resigned Biden Will Win: ‘He’s Going to Be Your President’

For the second time this week, President Donald Trump appeared almost resigned to the idea that former Vice President Joe Biden will beat him in November, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity that Biden “is going to be president because some people don’t love me.”

During a town hall in key swing state Wisconsin, Trump fell back on his well-worn attack lines against his Democratic opponent, painting Biden as too old and suffering from cognitive decline.

“Whenever he does talk, he can’t put two sentences together,” Trump exclaimed. “I don’t want to be nice or un-nice. The man can’t speak.”

At the same time, the president seemed to acknowledge current polling, which shows the ex-veep up by double digits nationally and leading in most battleground states—including Wisconsin, a must-win for Trump.

And he is going to be president because some people don’t love me, maybe,” Trump said. “And all I’m doing is doing my job.”

The president insisted that before the “China plague” hit, the country was enjoying the “best job numbers we ever had” and the “best economy we ever had.” He then pivoted to complaining about China, which he said “ate our lunch” before he entered office.

The president used similarly interesting language while speaking about the possibility of a Biden presidency earlier this week.

Asked during a trip to Arizona to react to Biden saying he may not complete construction on the border wall if elected, Trump said: “No, he will complete it. You’d have a revolution if they didn’t do it.”

A number of conservatives have recently begun to sound the alarm on Trump’s plummeting poll numbers and declining re-election chances. In a fiery Thursday night monologue, Fox News host Tucker Carlson warned Trump that he “could well lose this election” if he doesn’t turn things around soon.

I’m speechless that anyone could be swayed by the Drumpfs insanity. If you repeat a lie enough times it seems true if you want it to be true.

George Costanza advice to Jerry on how to beat the lie detector test: “Remember that it ISN’T a lie if you think it’s true “

Well, Donnie Boy is going to get a one word postcard from me after the election: "LOSER"

by Anonymousreply 2June 26, 2020 10:23 AM

Trump, "Hell, I'm voting for Joe".

by Anonymousreply 3June 26, 2020 10:24 AM

[quote] The president insisted that before the “China plague” hit

Lol... he's changing his wording.

It used to be "Chinese virus." Now it's "China plague."

What's with that? Does he think it will get him more votes?

by Anonymousreply 4June 26, 2020 10:25 AM

"un-nice"? What? I'm un-shocked.

by Anonymousreply 5June 26, 2020 10:37 AM

I believe in Trump's childish mind he thinks sounding pitiful with lines like “and all I’m doing is doing my job” is going to get him a huge pity vote. Don't be surprised if he doesn't start crying on camera soon.

by Anonymousreply 6June 26, 2020 10:43 AM

"[Biden] is going to be president because some people don’t love me."

Wow. Just... wow.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2020 10:46 AM

That's a shame.

by Anonymousreply 10June 26, 2020 10:56 AM

I really don't care. Do you?

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2020 10:59 AM

It's true, R10.

This is really a pathetic display.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2020 11:11 AM

The Morning Joe panel was just talking about this.

Joe was saying that Donald Trump is behaving as someone who doesn't want to be President any more, and that he might even resign by August.

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2020 12:15 PM

SOME people don't love me? MOST didn't vote for you in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 14June 26, 2020 12:29 PM

He won't resign unless he can wrangle a post Presidency pre-pardon for any crimes they may find he committed while in office. I believe if he could get that signed, sealed, and delivered today he'd resign tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 15June 26, 2020 12:30 PM

And I hope like hell he doesn't resign. I desperately want to see him lose, and then be investigated, ultimately indicted, convicted, and imprisoned.

by Anonymousreply 16June 26, 2020 12:32 PM

Trump isn’t a professional politician. Professional politicians are hell bent to keep their jobs because they want to accomplish their agenda. Trump doesn’t really have an agenda. All that wall stuff was to attract Deplorables.

If it doesn’t get done, he’ll go on OANN and complain about Biden. He doesn’t really care about policies, he just wants to be worshipped as a God. And he’s in a much better place to do that if he gets a job as an OANN anchor or writes a book full of lies about how we’re all going to die if Democrats run things.

If he does get a deal, I want him to agree to shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2020 12:37 PM

Thinking this might be one of his tricks so Dems get comfortable and don’t go out & vote.

by Anonymousreply 18June 26, 2020 12:38 PM

If this stops being fun for him he may quit, then go on a lecture tour to the thrill of screaming crowds, saying they weren’t good enough to appreciate him and do t deserve him. He’d make a ton of money and be totally isolated from critics. He wouldn’t get the extreme health screenings of everybody around him like he does now though.

Then he’d probably catch Covid and die, but what a way to go!

by Anonymousreply 19June 26, 2020 12:53 PM

Sanders:

But she suddenly seemed to lose interest She looked tired.

Tired. Tired. Turdface Tired.

by Anonymousreply 20June 26, 2020 12:59 PM

I would think his fear of the Russians wouldn't let him drop out, he owes them.

by Anonymousreply 21June 26, 2020 1:00 PM

No, Trump knows that votes will be stolen...he will continue his crooked path, destroying our country.

by Anonymousreply 22June 26, 2020 1:04 PM

He's asked SCOTUS to strike down Obamacare. I guess he wants to be fired.

by Anonymousreply 23June 26, 2020 1:07 PM

It's time to bring up Hillary's emails!

by Anonymousreply 24June 26, 2020 1:07 PM

He's like a toddler that made a big mess and is very proud of smearing his feces all over the walls, even though he knows his parents are mad at him.

by Anonymousreply 25June 26, 2020 1:09 PM

Yes, haha r5. The man critiqued Biden's English and in the next sentence used "un-nice".

by Anonymousreply 26June 26, 2020 1:16 PM

Just a reminder that you can thank the Bernie Bros and their cohorts in the progressive media for handing Trump the "Biden is senile" slur.

And if Trump doesn't just lose, but lose in a fucking historic landslide, this country is doomed.

Anybody who looks at this shitshow and thinks "yeah, I'll take 4 more years of this!" needs to have their head examined.

by Anonymousreply 27June 26, 2020 1:20 PM

He will NEVER EVER EVER resign. Please. He is far too stupid, far too egomaniacal and his pathological fear of losing would never allow.

by Anonymousreply 28June 26, 2020 1:25 PM

Ever notice how he repeats words/phrases when he speaks? Classic autism scale behavior.

by Anonymousreply 29June 26, 2020 1:26 PM

As Doris Kearns Goodwin said a few years ago, shortly after he was sworn in, something like "if Trump doesn't get a hold of his temper, it'll be the downfall of him, end of his presidency." She said a few years ago and I never forgot it. That's the one thing he cannot control - his anger, r28. I would put nothing past him if he got pissed off enough and did something erratic out of spite.

by Anonymousreply 30June 26, 2020 1:31 PM

[quote]because some people don’t love me.”

to put it likely, most people I know openly hate the mother fucker

by Anonymousreply 31June 26, 2020 1:32 PM

I don’t see him taking to the lecture circuit at all. First of all deplorables don’t have the money to pay him what he thinks he’s worth. Second, he’ll have to stay in backwater hotels and motels, since he won’t have the use of AF1 and Marine 1. I see him slinking away, screaming into the void on OAN.

My guess is once out of office the other former presidents will shun him. The first ladies will be ok with Melania. But sad about Trump...not.

by Anonymousreply 34June 26, 2020 1:45 PM

[quote]In a fiery Thursday night monologue, Fox News host Tucker Carlson warned Trump that he “could well lose this election” if he doesn’t turn things around soon.

Best thing I've read. It means none of them know how to save the sinking ship, because if Bowtie is imploring that fat fool to turn things around on his own... he's got one routine and nothing else and it's got him to here. Good.

by Anonymousreply 35June 26, 2020 1:48 PM

[quote]My guess is once out of office the other former presidents will shun him.

He won't go anywhere near former presidents. It's all about him. He'd be sat, by precedence, next to the Obamas. The bully coward doesn't have the balls to do that.

by Anonymousreply 36June 26, 2020 1:50 PM

[quote]“Whenever he does talk, he can’t put two sentences together”

Is he speaking in the third person again? This is all a show so when they steal the election (again) he can act as surprised as everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 37June 26, 2020 1:52 PM

R29, he is not autistic. It is the ONLY thing he has learned to do right in terms of propagandist speak..but it also helps with his HUGE lack of intellect.

by Anonymousreply 38June 26, 2020 1:52 PM

The second he’s out of there, Melania’s getting a divorce and will never appear at any of the events again. Even if she doesn’t divorce, she still won’t. She’ll take Barron to some remote place and no one will ever see either one of them again.

I guess she could try to make some money writing a book, but she’d have to do a book tour and she won’t want to do that. I think she’s on the spectrum too. She’s extremely introverted and seems to have no friends from what I’ve heard.

by Anonymousreply 39June 26, 2020 1:53 PM

Wow. Everyone here seems so confident he is going to lose.

Just a reminder: Dubya sounded just as depressed and resigned going into his re-election campaign against Kerry. He really thought he was more than likely to lose - but ended up winning handily.

Dont count chickens yet.

by Anonymousreply 40June 26, 2020 2:01 PM

Biden wins and I guarantee that Trump will skip the inauguration. He'll retreat to Mar A Lago and have the staff pack up. Melania and Barron will be in NYC.

by Anonymousreply 41June 26, 2020 2:04 PM

R40, here is the difference:

Trump continues to dig a deeper hole with his lack of intellect, lack of empathy, lack of action, lack of a plan.

He is, by all accounts on the road that leads to a landslide.

I know at least 15 ppl that voted for him and now hate him with a passion.

That is everywhere. Even in D.C.

by Anonymousreply 42June 26, 2020 2:06 PM

[quote] "(Biden) is going to be president because some people don’t love me."

This whining could be his new strategy. He's basing it on the concept of a Pity Fuck. He's trying for a Pity Second Term.

Despite his incredibly disastrous performance in every area, he's almost at 50% in Ohio to Biden's 50%. What would he have to do to make some parts of the country decisively reject him?

This really isn't about Trump anymore.

by Anonymousreply 43June 26, 2020 2:07 PM

An introvert? R39, you must be out of your mind. How many introverts do YOU know who pose nude for publication?

by Anonymousreply 44June 26, 2020 2:25 PM

What's with the spectrum talk? Trump is a narcissist, and very possibly or even probably a sociopath. Trying to turn him into an autistic person is pretty much trying to make him seem likeable, when in fact he's just rotten to the core.

Melania's career has always been about her looks, and since she hasn't even learned the language it's clear she doesn't give a shit about trying to fit in. She seems like one of those women who just feel too beautiful to have female friends since they believe other women are too envious of them. That said she does seem vulnerable in many ways, and it seems she's fully aware she comes from a poor Commie country and that people believe she used to be a whore. And if she really was a whore it's clear she knows her place, and doesn't even try to befriend society women. However since she was spewing that birther crap around she's clearly a cunt as well, and not just some mindless victim. Many Eastern Europeans are unbelievably racist.

Neither seem to be on the spectrum, neither are introverts who shun the limelight . They're just two asshole grifters who gut lucky way too many times.

by Anonymousreply 45June 26, 2020 2:30 PM

I'm going to choose to pretty much agree with you, r42...everything adds up to him losing. I just can't whole hog invest in it as an inevitability.

by Anonymousreply 46June 26, 2020 2:34 PM

[quote]Just a reminder: Dubya sounded just as depressed and resigned going into his re-election campaign against Kerry.

you made that up entirely

[quote]Dont count chickens yet.

but this is indeed wise

by Anonymousreply 47June 26, 2020 2:37 PM

lots of porn models are introverts, bunnk. posing isn't about being sociable.

by Anonymousreply 48June 26, 2020 2:38 PM

Trump resigns in August ... Pence becomes President ... Pence pardons Trump for all crimes. Can see this one coming.

by Anonymousreply 49June 26, 2020 2:56 PM

The attempt to abolish ACA today would seem to indicate Trump is self-sabotaging.

Even people who are against Obamacare are like "WTF? We're in the middle of a pandemic! You can't leave millions of people uninsured!"

(Except for his base, that is, but that base is shrinking)

by Anonymousreply 50June 26, 2020 3:03 PM

R49, there is ZERO chance of that happening. We are more likely to be hit by an oncoming comet that nobody saw.

by Anonymousreply 51June 26, 2020 3:04 PM

R50, I think his base who are enrolled in Obamacare might take pause. He does seem like he’s self sabotaging and can’t help it.

by Anonymousreply 52June 26, 2020 3:12 PM

R51, I see it happening only under specific circumstances. If Dump’s approval ratings hit the low 30s, there will be an effort to get him to resign, I think. Not that he would, but those numbers would signify an epic disaster in the 2020 election. But the powers that be would have to threaten him with something—revealing stuff that Dump is terrified to be public. I think one of those is his tax returns, if they show he’s in hock to Russian oligarchs. That actually would do tremendous damage, less so to his base, but certainly everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 53June 26, 2020 3:16 PM

"you made that up entirely"

I absolutely did NOT make that up. He def didn't sound so confident in his re-election campaign. Granted the poll below isnt as dramatic as Biden's right now - but Bush winning wasn't a foregone conclusion, especially because of the Iraqi War.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 54June 26, 2020 3:38 PM

I think he's too vain to go for any reason than himself. No one could implore, convince or threaten him into resignation even if they promised pardons. And what good would it do? That would have to go public and extend to the whole family.

The only option left for Republicans is to go down with him or renounce him when it gets close to autumn. Right now they can dither behind coronavirus, which must a like making plans in Hitler's bunker while you hear and feel the impact of the bombs and shells on the ground above.

He might be cagey enough to dangle resignation in exchange for pardons... but there's still no upside to anybody but him because it will still get out, it will still stink, although the remainers can retain deniability.... his idea, etc.

I am inclined to agree more with R49 more than R51.

by Anonymousreply 55June 26, 2020 3:50 PM

One other thing... The only thing that makes me think he might be contemplating this is the firing of Berman and those odd comments to Hannity as if Biden is inevitable.

by Anonymousreply 56June 26, 2020 3:51 PM

I agree that no one should under estimate him or the powers of the Deplorables.

He and they have singlehandedly screwed up our country's response to COVID-19 despite what the rest of the world was already proving worked.

Your neighbors, heck family members, are still majority stupid as dirt.

by Anonymousreply 57June 26, 2020 3:57 PM

The decision to ask the Supreme Court to abolish the ACA, in the middle of a pandemic, is head scratching. McConnell is apparently furious because he wanted trump to wait until after the election to do this. Mitch knows this action will screw every single vulnerable republican in November. Trump is certainly acting like a man on his way out, trying to burn everything down while he still can. One thing we know about Trump is his obsession with being the biggest victim in the room. I don’t think he’ll resign, but I definitely think he’d rather lose than win. He can play the victim and his brain dead followers will support his new TV network that he’ll start, and they’ll support Ivanka when she runs in 2024.

by Anonymousreply 58June 26, 2020 3:57 PM

You can count on me to not bring that hook...er, outgoing First Lady a Tiffany. hostess gift when she "shows me around" The White House.

by Anonymousreply 59June 26, 2020 4:01 PM

He isn’t even trying anymore. He’s losing seniors by 9 points and he’s still pretending the pandemic isn’t happening and he doesn’t care. He doesn’t want to be president anymore.

by Anonymousreply 60June 26, 2020 4:02 PM

[quote] his pathological fear of losing would never allow.

Trump is no stranger to losing. His multiple bankruptcies and business failures are a testament to how familiar he is with losing.

by Anonymousreply 61June 26, 2020 4:08 PM

“His multiple bankruptcies and business failures are a testament to how familiar he is with “

But he actually looks at the bankruptcies as winning because he was still able to abscond with millions from those business before they tanked. Those bankruptcies in his mind cost him nothing.

by Anonymousreply 62June 26, 2020 5:15 PM

What R36 said. Trump will not go anywhere near the past presidents after he loses or even NOW. Once Trump is done, he'll refuse to be a part of that pack. It'll take a lot of strain off the ex-presidents.

I don't understand all of these experts claiming Trump doesn't want to be re-elected. He's doing the same thing he did in 2016, and he won that year. To re-group and perform using a new strategy is beyond his capabilities. Sure, it can be written out, but Trump thrives on going off script. His off-script is always ignorant, petty, angry and self-serving. In the year 2020 = NO SALE.

by Anonymousreply 68June 26, 2020 7:48 PM

Don't ever, ever, ever get comfortable with this language. This is the most important election in our lifetimes. He's *got* to go, people. It's absolutely ridiculous we're even theorizing anything about his motives. The ONLY motive we should all have is to get amped up to vote his dumbass out in November.

by Anonymousreply 69June 26, 2020 7:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 70June 26, 2020 7:58 PM

Everyone who knows him said that his biggest fear is losing.

by Anonymousreply 71June 26, 2020 8:00 PM

I wonder of this is manipulative ploy, from the king of manipulative ploys!

Democrats need to WORK for this win, under no circumstances is it going to just show up on platter. America does not hate Trump like you do, and he is much nicer to them than you are.

Have you volunteered for Biden? Are you planning to? If not, expect a loss. Note I said volunteer, not donate.

by Anonymousreply 72June 26, 2020 8:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 73June 26, 2020 8:01 PM

Why are Democrats and progressives falling for the old illusion that Republicans and Trump think they are going to lose this year? You guys bought it into this obvious illusion in 2016 to the point of being recklessly overconfident and lazy. Why would you give attention to their attempts to make a fool of you yet again?

by Anonymousreply 74June 26, 2020 8:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 75June 26, 2020 8:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 76June 26, 2020 8:12 PM

R74 DL clings to its caricatures of Republicans because hating them feels so good, so superior....

Forgetting that Republicans are every bit as smart as you and are aware of that behavior and will consistently use it to their advantage. It's called "playing country-dumb."

Trumps feeds your egos and feeds your egos like you're little gremlins, and then uses your hubris against you.

by Anonymousreply 77June 26, 2020 8:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 78June 26, 2020 8:13 PM

Silly homosexuals and trolls

Trump won because people hated Hillary almost as much as they hated Trump.

Biden doesn't have that problem.

And screwing up the national response to Covid which will leave at least 200K people dead is a lot different than grabbing women by the pussy.

Especially against an opponent whom most voters assumed was married to a man who'd likely said the same thing.

If Trump resigns in August, Pence would automatically become the nominee because he would already have stepped in as President.

by Anonymousreply 85June 26, 2020 8:32 PM

He only says this because he knows Russia is fixing the election for him. Trump is a stupid man and telegraphs every move months before it happens.

by Anonymousreply 86June 26, 2020 8:38 PM

He won't resign; his ego would not allow him to admit failure or that he did anything wrong. He will need to lose at the polls. And unless he turns things around, the Senate may just squeak by and go blue.

He's always wanted a network and likely wanted to take over all or part of Fox in 2016. Now that Ailes is gone (and Tucker et al have even turned on him a bit), I think taking over OAN is his best shot. Watch for it to be renamed the new TNT (Trump Network Television). Being offered a network before November would be the only way to get him out before November 3rd.

by Anonymousreply 87June 26, 2020 8:46 PM

Something suddenly came up!

by Anonymousreply 88June 26, 2020 8:50 PM

R87, that would be a hoot. You know OAN is a piddling operation, and deplorables won’t bring a lot of advertising dollars, they’re too poor. And you can forget about people paying extra for it like HBO. It will be a nice big disaster, just like his presidency.

by Anonymousreply 89June 26, 2020 8:50 PM

He loves delaying any process that he doesn't agree with, by filing a lawsuit.

Because he's an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 94June 26, 2020 10:52 PM

Maybe now is the time for The Lincoln Project to start scaring a few other people.

by Anonymousreply 95June 26, 2020 11:09 PM

Trumpism is a cult. There's about 40% of the country so will go down with the ship, kicking and screaming. Fox News and Facebook are their only sources of information and serve to reinforce that the world is rotten and only Trump can make it right. That's why he's still in this - his sycophants who would walk over broken glass to get to one of his rallies.

Drive through rural America. The Trump flags and banners are all the proof you need.

I'm 10 years though, you'll be hard pressed to find anybody who will admit to voting for him. Never let them forget

by Anonymousreply 96June 26, 2020 11:15 PM

R96, that’s exactly what happened with Hitler. As soon as he was gone, everybody who was a member of the party said they just did it to keep their job or not get in trouble, they didn’t really like him.

They didn’t really like him (any more) because he lost. When he was winning, they loved him. I have a feeling that’s going to be what happens here. Because other Republicans want to get elected and they can’t if they tie themselves to this shitshow.

So if you’re a Deplorable, you want to promote Republicans who are still in office or running for office, not defeated or retired ones. And they will be the spineless ones who say, “who he? Never liked him.” Watch Ted Cruz and Miss Lindsey come up with some excuse, if they’re still around.

[quote]If Trump resigns in August, Pence would automatically become the nominee because he would already have stepped in as President.

Did you just pull that out of your ass? Why on earth would you think that the president automatically becomes a party's nominee?

by Anonymousreply 99June 27, 2020 2:01 AM

R99, In that case, it would be very hard to get rid of Pence. He would probably say I know where all the bodies are buried and you *will* be nominating me.

Think of all the crooked stuff people have done right in front of Pence. He knows everything. Not just about the Trumps.

by Anonymousreply 100June 27, 2020 3:05 AM

Maybe it would be a god idea- for both of them- to not debate. What is there to gain? And most people already know who they're going to vote for.

by Anonymousreply 101June 27, 2020 3:45 AM

I don't think him resigning is the best way for him to go. I would rather he hang in and be voted out.

by Anonymousreply 102June 27, 2020 3:56 AM

I agree with those who say, don't stop fighting, don't let up, don't get comfortable. They are right, of course. But I still think something is happening here. I think the shittiest president in American history is slowly deflating, slowly giving up.

Doesn't mean anyone should change their behavior or stop doing anything, but still. It seems like he's finally getting it a little: America hates the bitch.

by Anonymousreply 103June 27, 2020 3:58 AM

Agree 100% R97

The parallels between Nazis in 1945 and Trumpists in 2020 are quite obvious too.

I wonder if Trump will dispense cyanide capsules to the inner circle in November

OAN is a cable network that is carried by very few operators.

It might have some success as a streaming service but I suspect that like Glenn Beck's project, the audience would be limited.

R104 Please get your head out of your ass.

by Anonymousreply 106June 27, 2020 10:39 AM

Pence would only become the nominee if he decided to run for the office, and that requires more than just being the current office holder.

by Anonymousreply 107June 27, 2020 10:40 AM

Go suck Trump's nasty, shit encrusted asshole, R106.

by Anonymousreply 108June 27, 2020 10:48 AM

Watch what I tell you. Trump's staff will start fleeing like the wind as soon as it's obvious he's not going to win. It will be a sea of diseased rats fleeing a sinking ship. A week after they're gone they won't even remember Trump's name.

I do hope the feds have an up to date inventory of every single piece in the White House and ever gift that has been given to Trump or Melancholia during their time there. Otherwise there's no telling how much they'll steal when they leave. I'm sure there's plenty they've received that they have never even listed with the government. Things received "under the table".

by Anonymousreply 109June 27, 2020 11:02 AM

If Trump stepped down, Pence would not be the automatic nominee. If you think Cruz, Romney, and others wouldn’t fight to lead the ticket, you have missed the plotline.

by Anonymousreply 110June 27, 2020 11:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 112June 27, 2020 11:16 AM

I think it's funny that he's pivoted from THE POLLS ARE WRONG!! to "woe is me, I am too good for this world! They don't deserve me"

You can never tell what those traitorous repigs will do, but if they see Dear Leader sinking, it's not hard to imagine that they abandon in droves, so they can try & tell their voters they did everything they save him, but alas...he could not be saved!

by Anonymousreply 113June 27, 2020 11:26 AM

R113 He understands your psychology and the mindset of your voting demographic, and HE IS TRICKING YOU. How many people have to say it? Are you all just too addicted to the pretend?

by Anonymousreply 114June 27, 2020 11:32 AM

I think the failing numbers do point to the fact people are giving up on him in a number of different ways.

I don’t think that inspires laziness I think it inspires motivation. Some of you have been banging on about something the Democrats can get excited about this election - will here it is voting: for a landslide defeat of Donald Trump.

I don’t counsel giving up or taking anything for granted either. I think that message is vital. But I don’t think this is anything other than what it seems. The worst president in American history is approaching the ballot box. What would you expect people to do? He didn’t even win the popular vote last time and then nobody knew just how big of an asshole he can really be and 125,000 people weren’t dead.

by Anonymousreply 115June 27, 2020 11:54 AM

R112: 'Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.'

History is loaded with assholes like Hitler and their equally pea-brained supporters, willing to follow any crack pot, lamed brained asshole into oblivion because said asshole paints himself as their savior and only he can solve all of their problems, but only if they will just surrender their minds and common sense unto him.

Sound familiar?

by Anonymousreply 116June 27, 2020 12:05 PM

Agree completely R115

I think many DLers were traumatized by 2016 and did not realize the extent of the animosity towards Hillary and how much that contributed to her defeat, so they want to be cautious in 2020 on the "once burned, twice shy" theory.

by Anonymousreply 117June 27, 2020 12:10 PM

How many single issue voters has he lost since last time? Not counting the people whose single issue is supporting racism, obviously. Take healthcare. How many people believed the lie he told about better, cheaper health insurance that simply didn't materialize in any way for example?

The problem with not having a single issue that you are campaigning for is that you don't get those single issue voters. Everything adds up on election day.

Another wary +1 with r115.

Daily, my spectrum meter of reactions to to whether Trump will be re-elected has gone from one extreme to the next : "He's toast", to "This fucking asshole country is going to put this despicable, bigoted incompetent gelatinous, cowardly, asshole in Office again!"

Lately though, I'm warily believing he's out, if for no other reason that even his secret voters, the kind who'd be dragged to hell before attending a Trump rally, are just plain weary of the whole spectacle from hell, and, speaking of "secret", want the Dems in for peace and quiet and to clean up the mess, although they'd die rather than admit that.

Long before "Morning Joe" openly talked about him withdrawing from the race rather than take a humiliating "LOSER" defeat, a lot of us here speculated about that possibility.

"Going down swinging" is an act of valor. It requires character on the part of the combatant. It requires honor, integrity and loyalty to "the cause", and, as we all know, Trump's cause is Trump.

It takes knowing losing is inevitable, but, for the sake of your own dignity and that of the people in your corner, you, in the words of Lincoln, give the "last full measure of devotion".

We're talking Trump here.

If he decides he doesn't want to be humiliated by a defeat, it's entirely possible he'll withdraw with nonsense like, "As President, I've been the best; better than any other. I've accomplished more in 4 years than any other, including FDR's 12, so fellow Americans my work is done."

I can just hear him bloviate along those lines.

by Anonymousreply 120June 27, 2020 12:40 PM

R104, a lot of officials killed themselves after Hitler was gone, but a lot of those people weren’t in Hitler’s inner circle. Some of them were local mayors and other local officials, who had spent years shitting on their childhood neighbors, and now knew that once the Allies were running things, the locals would drag them into the street and tear them into pieces. Some of those weren’t really true believers, they had just used Hitler as an excuse to shit on people.

Others really were true believers, thought Hitler would miraculously solve every problem no matter how bad, and when he was gone they thought it was the end of the world and were terrified to live on. They had surrounded themselves with other True Believers and suddenly they knew all the privileges they’d received were going to be ripped away. A lot of them were more ass kissers than qualified people, so they could never reach that level again. They’d rather die than go back to being ordinary. And then there’s the ones that knew they were going to jail and wanted to cheat the hangman.

Trump’s situation is a little different. Virtually no one close to him is a true believer. Lindsey Graham, Kellyanne Conway, and all those professional hangers on and con artists don’t believe in Trump, they believe in paychecks. Trump will be shocked at how quickly his “friends” fall away when he’s out of office. Not even Pence and Mother care about him really. Mother hates him.

The True Believers with Trump are the unwashed masses that swallow whole everything he says without understanding it.

Some other Republicans, probably OANN and Alex Jones type conspiracy theorists, will continue to promote Trumpism because they can’t make money without riling up the public. The politicians are going to have to tone it down if they want to stay in office. A lot of local extremist Republicans will be driven out on the blue wave. And the Corona backlash in red states, after the thousands of deaths that will be hanging over their heads by election time, is going to drive out a lot of governors.

In the end, the foxes guarding the henhouse aren’t loyal. Only the sheep.

by Anonymousreply 121June 27, 2020 12:45 PM

Well put R121

If you read the history of that era, many (not most, but many) Germans continued to be True Believers till the end and even as the Russians were surrounding Berlin believed that somehow the Fuhrer would pull out a wildcard and win.

Similarly, they believed all of Goebbels propaganda about how well everything was going and it was only when refugees from East Prussia began to arrive in Berlin that more of them started to wake up.

I also agree with those of you saying that in five years no one will admit to ever having been a Trump supporter or, if the evidence is too great to deny, they will claim they did it "for the courts" or some other nonsense similar to what the Germans claimed was the reason they became Nazis.

One huge difference is that once Hitler solidified his power, he had massive popular support in Germany, something Trump, who is actually more akin to Goerring, a fat pompous vain dolt, never achieved

by Anonymousreply 122June 27, 2020 1:40 PM

Russia will fix the election for him. Again. They are already easily hacking into zoom calls and people working from home. Hacking election results is a piece of cake for them.

by Anonymousreply 123June 27, 2020 1:49 PM

I heard Harry Reid is coming out with a vote where he states Russia changed the vote tallies in 2016.

by Anonymousreply 124June 27, 2020 1:52 PM

Trump is the one that is senile if he can’t figure up there is only three years and five months difference in their ages.

Next he’ll be saying Biden has a comb-over.

Trump’s desperation is showing.

To paraphrase Hannibal Lecter “you stink of fear Donald“

by Anonymousreply 125June 27, 2020 2:00 PM

His window to bow out with any fiction about doing all he could has passed.

But I have a question - an honest one -which is all those people lying to the pollsters and saying Biden when they secretly mean Trump... really, what's left to vote for? The economy is in terrible shape and the pandemic is out of control. Even he couldn't articulate a benefit to him. What's left to vote for? I know there's racists and freepers but they aren't 50% + 1. So for the people who somehow thought or gambled he'd do less damage than Hillary and the Democrats - what's left to vote for? Surely there are enough people somewhere between die hard Republican and Democrat who are left to vote against what's happened and what will come.

by Anonymousreply 126June 27, 2020 4:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 129June 27, 2020 4:24 PM

I know this is beating a dead horse, but in PA, I remember driving in some of the rural areas an hour from Philly and being a bit shocked at all the pro Dump signs—I mean house after house. In Philly, there are signs, but mostly for local politicians. There were no more than a handful on my block for Hillary OR Dump in 2016. And I remember being very worried about the bad rainstorms in Philly on Election Day because PA needs Philly to come out and vote Democratic.

I really don’t want to think the Russians hacked into the vote totals. I am hoping people were enamored of Dump because of his talk about foreign jobs (the area I drive thru is old steel country).

One additional note—in the five county Philly area, only Philly and Delaware County were Democratic. In 2018-2019, all five counties turned blue.

by Anonymousreply 133June 27, 2020 9:48 PM

R43, you asked what it would take to turn current supporters in, say, Ohio, to drop him. It would have to be some outrageous action and not just something he says, because we know he would backtrack from that. Possible ideas include appointing pro-choice judges; an executive order taking away guns; and dumping Pence and selecting Hillary or Pelosi as VP. The diehards vote culturally, and gun rights, abortion, and hatred of certain liberals, especially females, keep them coming to the polls.

by Anonymousreply 134June 27, 2020 10:57 PM

I have lived most of my life in the Rust Belt of Northwestern Ohio. There are a lot of Germans, Catholics, farmers, evangelicals, and former Democrats who walked away from the party when the factories closed and the Dems embraced anti-racist, pro-choice and gun control platforms. Many of these people are former Appalachians who moved north to work in the factories that are no longer here.

I think people on the coasts severely underestimated the power of decades of Limbaugh stories maligning Hillary. I have voted blue since I turned 18, but even I was tired of hearing about Hillary by the time 2016 rolled around. If Joe had run then, he would have won. She was a terrible choice, not because of who she is or her policies, but of her bad press since 1992.

by Anonymousreply 135June 27, 2020 11:15 PM

Hillary did actually win the popular vote, r135, but I get what you're saying. For the rural areas, which sadly is too often the dumb fuck areas, it had been 30 years of relentless Hillary is the Devil propaganda. So yeah, hopefully, that won't have quite the impact with Joe Biden. We'll see.

by Anonymousreply 136June 27, 2020 11:25 PM

[quote] even I was tired of hearing about Hillary by the time 2016 rolled around. If Joe had run then, he would have won. She was a terrible choice, not because of who she is or her policies, but of the LIES SPREAD ABOUT HER since 1992

by Anonymousreply 137June 27, 2020 11:55 PM

Hillary may be the most unfairly maligned politician in US history. It really did suck how the media decided to treat her. And although she made some mistakes, it really was a media decision, based on bullshit pretty much entirely.

by Anonymousreply 138June 28, 2020 12:23 AM

Yup, r138. Perfect.

by Anonymousreply 139June 28, 2020 12:30 AM

Regardless, someone -- Hillary and the DNC--should have been smart enough to say "look whether it is justified or not, half the country hates you now and that's going to make it next to impossible for you to beat anyone...even failed reality TV show host/pussygrabber with zero political experience.

At some point you need to cut your losses and after 2008 it should have been clear that--rightly or wrongly--she had too many negatives and did not have the necessary political acumen to overcome them.

by Anonymousreply 140June 28, 2020 12:36 AM

how does that work, though, r140? She ran in a bunch of primaries and caucuses, and won. Who is supposed to step in and say, nope, white guy here, not on my watch! You can't be the nominee. It's gotta be Bernie or somebody. Who is supposed to make that happen?

by Anonymousreply 141June 28, 2020 12:39 AM

She herself should have known that R141

The Clintons cleared the deck so she would have smooth sailing and people mostly glommed onto Bernie because he Was-Not-Hillary

It's one thing to have ambition, it's another to be realistic about your limitations.

by Anonymousreply 142June 28, 2020 12:54 AM

she ran, she won, for the nomination. it's perfectly normal. she did seem like the most experienced and smartest candidate in a long time r142. I really disagree with the idea that it is up to people to decide, well, the media is full of assholes who get a veto on an obviously qualified candidate because they have stupid shit reasons. I really do. Bernie was my choice actually, initially, but she won and should not have been treated like some deeply problematic candidate when she so obviously wasn't. Sadly, the media never gets a reckoning, so they will still do the stupid shit they always do until the end of time, but still, she was the nominee fair and square and did not deserve the Clinton Rules treatment. We can't do anything about that now, but hopefully be very suspicious about everything published by the New York Times and Washington Post as we head into November. And of course everything on the Sunday Morning bullshit hours.

by Anonymousreply 143June 28, 2020 12:59 AM

If Trump loses none of the trials Barr has impeded will go away? Gawd only knows what else they have on him. Look for Trump to do ANYTHING to avoid losing and facing charges when he doesn't control the Justice Dept.

by Anonymousreply 144June 28, 2020 1:11 AM

Trump will likely pardon Roger Stone and the rest of his gang of criminals.

And when everyone complains about that, he will just say "but Marc Rich"

by Anonymousreply 145June 28, 2020 11:35 AM

I gladly voted for Hillary, but I also believe the stories that she strong armed a lot of people (maybe Biden included) into not running. Yes she won the primaries, but perhaps she wouldn't have if 7 or 8 other Democrats would have been competing against her. Would we even know who Bernie Sanders was if he had gotten lost in the crowd?

In 2008 I voted for Obama in the primary because I felt Hillary would be dragged through the mud by the National Enquirer non-stop. I had no idea back then how dirty the Nat. Enquirer was.

It's no small problem for Trump that he isn't running against Hillary this time. The tragedy of his life, to be sure.

by Anonymousreply 146June 28, 2020 11:42 AM

by Anonymousreply 148June 28, 2020 3:06 PM

The benefit to a Democratic supermajority is we can make DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Marianas all into states, thus blunting the GOP advantage in the Electoral College.

The latter three will be a tough sell--they have small populations, but DC and PR should be fairly easy.

by Anonymousreply 149June 28, 2020 3:13 PM

How on earth are we going to get a Democratic supermajority? Even if we do, I doubt AOC and her band are willing to accept imperfect advances. The last time, between Ted Kennedy’s death and Blue Dogs, we blew the opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 154June 28, 2020 8:55 PM

R154 The system is specifically designed to do this. It's supposed to force consensus. None of you had a problem with the electoral college until Clinton lost because of shitty campaigning.

Has anyone thought to try campaigning? No?

by Anonymousreply 155June 28, 2020 10:02 PM

+1 R155

Up until Election Night 2016, the talk was of how the Electoral College was providing Clinton with her personal Maginot Line, "the Blue Wall" that would push Her to victory and that as soon as Florida was won the election would be over.

by Anonymousreply 156June 28, 2020 10:04 PM

Actually, the Electoral College failed us in November 2000.

It should have been changed way back then. Especially with all of the republican gerrymandering which has taken place in the last 20 years.

by Anonymousreply 157June 28, 2020 10:08 PM

Can you explain how the gerrymandering of Congressional districts impacts the Electoral College R157

by Anonymousreply 158June 28, 2020 10:12 PM

Here R158...

In short:

[quote] Gerrymandering is a practice intended to establish an unfair political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating district boundaries, which is most commonly used in first-past-the-post electoral systems.

You can read the long explanation at the link.

by Anonymousreply 159June 28, 2020 10:34 PM

What would happen if electoral votes were tabulated on their own instead of choosing a winner by states? Aren't there a handful of states who only submit electoral votes rather than a state choice?

Sorry, I'm American by birth and have only lived in the USA for about the first 2 years of my life.

In parliamentary democracies it is not uncommon for the popular vote to belong to the party that is not in power.

by Anonymousreply 160June 28, 2020 10:52 PM

Your question is confusing, r160, but let me do my best. For the most part, a state’s popular vote Is winner takes all and determines who the electors (representatives to the Electoral College) will be. Some are legally bound to vote the way the state did, but occasionally someone goes rogue.

A small number of states allow for proportional (NOT winner takes all) assignment of electors. They can split the state’s overall Electoral College voting.

Essentially, the EC is tabulated independently rather than by state. However, the number of states who Can split their EC votes is so small that the distinction really does not matter much.

by Anonymousreply 161June 28, 2020 11:53 PM

R160 & R161, Maine & Nebraska are the only 2 states that split their Congressional districts in the Electoral College.

This is how Obama won an electoral vote in Nebraska in 2008 and how Trump won an electoral vote in Maine in 2016.

by Anonymousreply 162June 29, 2020 12:00 AM

Well, if Donald trump did win an electoral college vote in Maine you can rest assured I believe you can rest assured I am very concerned that he’s learned his lesson.

by Anonymousreply 163June 29, 2020 12:33 AM

That explains nothing R159

Gerrymandering affects the make-up of a state's Congressional delegation and/or the state legislature. It has nothing to do with the EC.

As per R162, except for NE and ME, the electoral college votes are calculated on a statewide basis.

You win the state, you win the electoral votes.

by Anonymousreply 164June 29, 2020 2:44 AM

Everytime I see Democrats stamping their little feet about how unfair the Electoral College is, I see it as a tacit admission that the party has nothing to offer rural voters and never will.

We refuse to change, so change the system, basically.

I am a Democrat from a rural area and I assure you, r165, nothing Democrats do will change their allegiance. They want 1952 back, just with 2020 technology.

So help with the tech, rural tech initiatives. The Dems have to be more than the Sexual Revolution Party or they're unelectable.

Companies that try to bring jobs to rural areas usually find workers who do not want to learn new skills. A rural initiative by the Democrats would be derided as a government takeover. I know plenty these people. They want the life they imagined their grandparents living, with high wages for 40 hours of manual labor. The ones who don’t move away.

R168 Sounds like you need to move!

I don’t live in a rural area anymore, r169. I just came from one and still hear plenty.

I'm from farmers in rural Michigan and Iowa and let me tell you, many of these people don't even want the good manual labor jobs. My family has always had a bitch of time finding solid, decent help and we pay a living wage (for the area) including good health benefits. Given that, our best workers by far were from Mexico and Central America. And they weren't taking anyone's job - we turned to them as a last resort because most of the locals were lazy, flakes, alcoholics. Undocumented workers saved my family's collective ass.

Just out of curiosity r171, did you pay the Mexicans and Central Americans as much as you would the locals?
