by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 14, 2020 3:45 AM |
R12 They had to quickly put it out, it was next to a gas station. If the fire had gotten out of hand it could have been much worse. Some people are saying Wendy's shouldn't have called the cops. Who was Wendy's supposed to call or what were they supposed to do, when a man was asleep in the drive thru? Especially since it is being said he was passed out drunk, behind the wheel of a car, not simply sleeping. Was Wendy's expected to just close up their shop to allow him to sleep it off? Are cops no longer supposed to enforce DUI laws? Unlike the other cases we have seen, such as George Floyd or the tasering of the college students in Atlanta during the protests, this was not some innocent man, he was violently resisting, and yes I fully believe a white person in the same situation would have been killed in the same manner.

[quote] Second, and most importantly, it takes a skilled marksman to hit someone exactly in the arm or leg, and, most officers are not skilled marskmen. In fact, outside of an old-fashioned TV Western, few people can make that shot, no matter the training.
R22 He wasn't unarmed he had already taken the Taser from the police and was aiming it behind him as he ran. It has happened before that the suspect tases the officer and then takes their gun.

So what? A taser isn't a gun. According to every, single police force in the entire United States of America, a taser is not a deadly weapon. Having one isn't grounds for being murdered by the police
Those were some shitty, poorly trained cops. They had no control whatsoever over the situation. They allowed the suspect to get their taser. Then they shot him in the back.
Police aren't allowed to shoot people in the back. A taser can wound. So can a cup of coffee. Do you advocate police shooting people who have a cup of coffee in their hands? A pencil can kill someone. Do you advocate murdering someone with a pencil?

R32 it isn’t that the taser is a deadly weapon, it is that a taser can be used to incapacitate the officer, allowing the suspect to then get the deadly gun. You also failed to point out that while the suspect was shot in the back, he was pointing the taser at the officer behind his back. Just be prepared for all of America to become Baltimore. After the riots there a few years back the police have largely retreated, leaving their violent crime rate to skyrocket and the people paying the price is minority communities.

R39 ya he was perfecting his aim while running (and facing) the other direction, and was gonna run back to grab the gun of the cop he was aiming the taser at once it fell - which he would sense because he wasn’t looking to see when that would happen. All this while figuring out how to use the taser since it wasn’t his weapon to begin with. All while apparently drunk and just after being woken up.
And the trained cops only (and according to you justifiable) option was to shoot him in the back. And now he’s dead.
R16 call the fire department in future if you see someone like this out that needs assistance and is maybe breaking some low level law. Situation would be addressed and nobody will be dead.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 14, 2020 6:51 AM |
R43 except, probably, the firefighter.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 14, 2020 7:03 AM |
Well R44 in this instance no the firefighter would not be dead. This guy was initially unarmed. So nobody would be dead. The police bring a perceptible level of aggression and violence to an interaction by having guns on their person (implicit and explicit since it’s on show). The violence stakes are raised by police even being on a scene. Their known history of violence also contributes. In an instance where there is the expectation of violence then sure it makes sense to have police on the scene however in an instance like this where there’s someone asleep in a drive thru there isn’t an expectation of violence. With that rationale then there would be armed guards at every drive thru which I think it’s safe to agree is not warranted. Therefore it’s not rational or safe for the people involved in this interaction to get police involved (or for police either since it seems they’re so bad at their jobs that they allowed this allegedly drunk, hungry and half asleep man to get hold of one of their tasers). So yes why not expand the role of fire officers (Or other) to take these kind of calls. And then if the situation escalates to violence they back off and cops are called.

Why did they run after the guy in the first place? Let him run. They’ve got his car. They know who he is. They can swear out a warrant for him & pick him up at 12 noon when he’s fast asleep at home sometime next week. It’s a DUI. He can’t drive his car and get into an accident. The cops have his car.
This shit is senseless. So is getting into a car chase & killing innocent civilians on the roadway because some punk stole a car. If it’s not a carjack with a hostage inside, let it fucking go. Insurance will pay. Car theft has been around since the beginning of cars. Police didn’t use to chase cars at 100 mph with helicopters filming from above. Stop this shit. That’s not how DUI’s work. The suspect has to be apprehended in a timely manner, and their blood has to be drawn to prove their alcohol level at the time of the incident.
If you don’t like that, then encourage people to stop supporting groups like MADD that lobbied tirelessly for these laws, and now want them to be even stricter. They want police to be able to pull you over at anytime with no probable cause to check for sobriety.
Until these types of laws are changed, which they won’t be... then Black people have to understand that running away from police is never going to end well.

Because, by that point he was armed, with the policeman's taser. The police cannot allow a person to get away with a weapon. Tasers when used properly are less lethal than a gun, but they do and can cause death, especially in the hands of someone who hasn't been trained how to use them. There have been over 1000 deaths after cops used them, with 153 of those deaths attributed directly to the taser.

UK resident here. Only in America could stealing a taser been seen as grounds for murder. You do realize what you are saying right? [quote] Just be prepared for all of America to become Baltimore. After the riots there a few years back the police have largely retreated, leaving their violent crime rate to skyrocket and the people paying the price is minority communities.
This is why we desperately need defunding and police reform. Police (unions) have convinced you that unless they are allowed to use deadly force against black people, arbitrarily and at will, they are unable to do their jobs. If deadly chokeholds and guns are the only weapons that police have to serve and protect, or stop crime, we should all be outraged. Imagine if every white man who was stopped for a DUI was killed -- no George Bush, no Matt Gaetz, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 14, 2020 6:31 PM |
R72 It isn't about him stealing a taser. He pointed a weapon at a police officer. That has always been grounds for an officer to fire. The police officer had no way of knowing if the weapon was the taser that the guy had just wrestled away from him or another weapon he already had.
From the AP
[quote] The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Brooks wrestled a Taser from one of the officers and ran. The GBI released security camera footage from the restaurant that showed a running Brooks turn and point an object in his hand toward an officer a few steps behind him. The video shows the officer draw his gun and fire as Brooks continues to run, then falls to the ground in the parking lot.
R73 NO ONE is saying that. Every black man stopped by the cops for DUI or anything else is NOT killed, it is a very small percentage of black encounters with the police, less than half of 1%. No one is saying they should be allowed to use arbitrary violence against black people. But, the police should be allowed and expected to ENFORCE all laws against everyone. Every drunk driver SHOULD be arrested. Every person vandalizing property SHOULD be arrested. ETC.

[quote]Imagine if every white man who was stopped for a DUI was killed -- no George Bush, no Matt Gaetz, etc.
There are thousands of DUI arrests every day that are done appropriately and you never hear anything about. That’s because most people don’t fight back and steal weapons and try to run away, which seems to be something unique to black people.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 14, 2020 6:45 PM |
R76 I think it is a cycle that will get worse. Because of the media and others telling black men, especially, that the police will kill them, even though it is a very rare occurrence. They will resist arrest. Which will result in them getting killed, unless the police just stop responding to calls. The bodycam video that was released showed that the encounter was going fine for 40 minutes, until the cops started to handcuff him. Then he fought back, took the taser, ran, and then turned and aimed it at the officer.
Now the officer has been fired and the DA is considering murder charges, entirely to placate the mob. I fully expect the police to stop trying to enforce anything that isn't entirely cut and dry. And, there is rarely anything in the real world that is cut and dry.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 14, 2020 6:56 PM |
R74 you have to be joking. He grabbed a taser and immediately pointed it at them, and you expect there to be a logical amount of suspicion that he suddenly switched it to a different weapon and they couldn’t have noticed? Also even by now I know what a taser looks like and I’ve never seen one up close, and you expect any reasonable person to believe that the cops didn’t know he was holding a taser in his hand? The taser he had just taken from them. He may as well have been carrying a water pistol for how likely he was to kill or injure one of those cops and you know it.
Secondly, what’s the use in arresting a drunk driver anyway? Catch them with a breathalyzer, tow the car so they can’t drive, send them a ticket and refer for a court date if required. Seems like a major waste of time and resources to arrest someone and bring them to the station. Like what is the function?

by Anonymous | reply 80 | June 14, 2020 7:14 PM |
R77 these cops sound like they’re all over the place. They allowed the taser to be in a position where it could be taken from them? And then I guess were mad about fucking that up so they killed the guy to get it back. And you think it’s the actions of people like the one that is dead that are going to inhibit the police from doing their job? The DA is considering murder charges because this person was murdered. Also your statement really betrays it all, that if cops respond to calls then people will be killed in instances such as this. So you’re acknowledging that these kind of killings are just part of a cops job.

R85 this illustrates the problem perfectly and is an unacceptable situation. This is exactly what people are rising up against. The kind of unspoken acceptance that it’s rational that the police will kill you if you were to resist arrest and it’s “what you deserve”. What other public service could get away with this as a standard of care for the public. It’s unbelievable. Think about why you’re not more bothered by this. Think about all the cop movies and shows and media representation. Think how corporate American benefits from access to a publicly paid for security force and why they might want you to look favorably on the police force.

R36, if you are black in America, that what cops have ALWAYS been there for. To beat you, subjugate you arrest you or kill you, because America’s “justice” system cannot exist without running around America and over policing blacks to the point they entire budgets and federal funding are dependent on shit like arrest a black man for jay walking or spitting on a sidewalk.
Imagine, sitting in front of your home, and having cops rolls up on you for no reason other than you’re black, they’re new on the job, and they have been taught that stalking black folks in their own neighborhoods is the way to meet your quotas?
You think that doesn’t happen? Then you aren’t black or Hispanic.
How many white men fall out at bus benches or even a fast food joint, or their cars, after one too many, and make it home without incident, a or with ticket, or a DUI, instead of bullets? And why does anyone, including a freakin’ cop, expect a passed out drunk to violently roused from passing out, without incident?
Other countries don’t even have armed policemen, because most of this shit is EASILY handled without guns. White people in America who have gotten drunk in public tickets and DUIs, know all about this, because they’re committed the same crime as this dude, and went to jail instead of the morgue.
Why aren’t whites getting killed at the exact rate and exact reasons, as their AA counterparts? Surely it cannot be something as simple as the color of their skin, can it? Or can it?
And if you ain’t out there protesting when your people, Whites, get killed by cops, that’s on YOU. Don’t be pissed if blacks do.
Also, BLM are NOT Antifa, either. So please do not conflate the two. Antifa are nothing but a bunch of attention seeking famewhores, to whom black lives do NOT matter.
Oh, & for the idiot who eventually shows up with the tired ass “dead blacks in Chicago over the weekend” stats, fuck off. TIA.

Why? Why do cops drive around, literally looking for minorities to arrest and harass?
Because policy that is funded by incarceration rates of people who are too poor to get private attorneys, and too poor to be arrested and pay the fees behind that arrest, that happened when no one was standing around with a cellphone, recording what started as police harassment, that is usually PURPOSEFULLY escalated by police, on persons who they believe are too high on drugs or too uneducated, to know their rights, which they assume correctly, whites will NOT put up with, if done to them.

R93 No, they also have not had a white mayor since 1974.

Why is a cop asking a black woman if she’s getting a motel room?
People need to understand how much this shit goes on DAILY.

Well R96, everybody today wants to have a conversation about Criminal Justice Reform. DUI laws are a good place to start. DUI is the most frequently committed criminal offense in America, and is the reason for many traffic stops and the reason why many citizens come into contact with police.
And MADD is the reason why many of the laws are written as they are, and give police a lot of power to pull motorists over often without probable cause. Maybe it needs to be looked at through the lens of police overreach, especially against minorities.

If the protesters are successful in their demands to defund or eliminate the police, it will send a message to the criminal element in this country (of all races) that they can do pretty much anything they want to do with little or no serious repercussions.

[quote] That’s not how DUI’s work. The suspect has to be apprehended in a timely manner,
You automatically get a DUI if you refuse testing in GA.. If he runs, they simply swear out a warrant for his arrest for DUI. No lawyer is going to get those charges dropped in court . He was drunk & he ran. He’s getting arrested - if not now, then later. Let him run if that’s how he wants to play it. They already frisked him. He had no weapons. They have his car. They have his car keys. Just bide your time & arrest him at home or work for DUI & resisting arrest. He’s fucked. So let him fuck himself. Instead, they shot & killed him & now they’re in a whole world of trouble.
And for what? For a guy who passed out in parked car in a Wendy’s drive thru. Oh bravo to those brave men in blue. How the fuck many cops were there? And they let that guy get hold of a taser? That’s shameful on their part. Bunch of fuck ups.

How do you know he took a breathalyzer? If he did & he failed, he’s getting a blood test. If he didn’t, he’s under arrest in GA.

I was afraid the fire would jump next door to the BP station and blow up Atlanta.
Oh well, maybe next time.
And to the Brit who said we're done - we've always been like this. In the 1960s, a teenaged boy could be lynched by a mob for looking at a white woman - and it happened, after they broke every bone in his body. God only know what all happened that wasn't recorded - now everything is. But I don't think its worse. I actually think it's better - but that ain't sayin' much I realize. Wonder where this culture got its classism and racism? Surely not good old Blighty?
by Anonymous | reply 119 | June 14, 2020 10:37 PM |
Once again, if the guy sleeping in the car was white, he would not be dead. Simple as that. And if he were passed out drunk he has a "problem" and gets to go to rehab. Even if he grabbed the taser. Black people can't have "problems". Either we're perfect or we must die immediately. And some of you are fine with that. So what's your excuse why Breonna Taylor should be dead?

R46, You can make your own Frosty's at home with only three ingredients. Vanilla ice cream, nesquick powder and milk. I have also used Hot Chocolate powder like SwissMiss and yes they are good, if you like chocolate milk shakes you should like Frosty's they are just a little sweeter similar to an old time malted milk shake.

I'm getting tired of all these people on TV saying "oh he wasn't doing anything wrong, he just fell asleep in his car." And "if it was a white man, the police wouldn't have done anything."
That's all bullshit. Falling asleep behind the wheel after drinking is a DUI, and I know PLENTY of white people who have gotten DUIs for similar situations where they weren't a serious threat to anyone. But they still ALL got arrested and charged and convicted or took a plea deal. Because it's nearly impossible to beat a DUI charge in this country, and the idea that white people all get off is blatantly FALSE.

Don't drunk and drug addicts behave in unpredictable, unruly ways? If this was a white opioid addict doing the same thing in Kentucky, they'd go easy on him. Hell, they'd feel sorry for him a buy him a burger (like Dylan Roof).

Actually there were TWO men on bath salts who went around attacking & eating people in FL. One was black & was shot to death for face-earring a homeless man. The other was white, ate the faces of 2eople & was gently taken into custody by police after a standoff.

Because a white man wouldn’t have stolen a Taser, ran away, then turned around and fired the Taser at the cop.

A female friend of mine, white, did this exact same thing at a Taco Bell years ago. The cops didn't even give her a DUI, she just had to leave her car in the parking lot, and she called another mutual friend of ours to bring her home. They didn't even tow her car.
The point isn't solely whether or not that Wendy's location should have called the police over the incident, what's more important is how drastically the outcome was different.

Wendy’s restaurant where Atlanta officer killed Rayshard Brooks is demolished
The June shooting heightened protests against US race-based police violence, and the burned-out Wendy’s became a gathering place for demonstrators
The occupation ended on July 4, when Secoriea Turner, 8, was killed across the street from the restaurant while in a vehicle with her mother
