I recall reading (perhaps it was on the old Outsports message board or RealJock) that when he was at Purdue they made a big deal that Brees was a “scholar athlete” with a high GPA. According to what was on the message board, he would have others complete his homework for him and/or professors gave him a pass (so to speak). While student athletes getting away with limited studies is not unusual, what was different with Brees was that he was promoted as being both an excellent football player and a driven, serious student who was very intelligent. He was also promoted as being a decent, even pious guy, from a good, Christian family who treated his teammates and fellow students with respect from the lowliest to the most accomplished athletically. He was said to be loved and admired by so many on campus. I wonder what parts, if any, of those aspects of his image are accurate.
