Grindr Is Disabling Its Ethnicity Filter to Fight Racism

Sorry racists, you can no longer block out someone for their ethnicity or race. Bwahahahaha

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 166June 23, 2020 3:34 AM

I mean, good. But, on the other hand, it did help to filter out the self-selected racists. If someone really is racist or claims that they're not attracted to a single member of an entire race, I'm not sure this really changes anything for them.

by Anonymousreply 1June 1, 2020 11:45 PM

The racists have no choice but to see the black and brown and Asian people around them now lmao

by Anonymousreply 2June 1, 2020 11:46 PM

I hope they don’t disable the “fat” or “femme” settings.

by Anonymousreply 3June 1, 2020 11:48 PM

I haven't been on Grindr for a couple of years. I thought the filters only worked on a profile search -You're saying that it make people who don't fit your criteria invisible to you??

by Anonymousreply 4June 1, 2020 11:51 PM

R4 yes. You can. They made it where you can literally pick what groups you see on your page

by Anonymousreply 5June 1, 2020 11:53 PM

So now we can social distance from everyone, equally.

by Anonymousreply 6June 1, 2020 11:55 PM

So stupid to do that. There are hot men of every race, type, and age group. Hot is in the eye of the beholder. Why blind yourself??

by Anonymousreply 7June 2, 2020 12:02 AM

Tragedy of tragedies.

by Anonymousreply 8June 2, 2020 12:05 AM

They better ban pictures then too.

by Anonymousreply 9June 2, 2020 12:08 AM

And how are they going to make us sleep with trans people? That’s coming.

by Anonymousreply 10June 2, 2020 12:08 AM

^^ Idiot.

by Anonymousreply 11June 2, 2020 12:09 AM

You don’t have to sleep with them, asshole r10. But you do have to SEE them. You can’t block them as a whole and no longer have to see them. Now you have to.

by Anonymousreply 12June 2, 2020 12:09 AM

Does this mean you can't filter out white people either?

by Anonymousreply 13June 2, 2020 12:14 AM

R13 lmao nope.

by Anonymousreply 14June 2, 2020 12:15 AM

No one uses Grindr anymore. It’s all ads and virtue-signaling.

by Anonymousreply 15June 2, 2020 12:16 AM

I would rather they get rid of the age filter

by Anonymousreply 16June 2, 2020 12:16 AM

I've been made invisible for too many things, for too many years. No one should be made invisible.

by Anonymousreply 17June 2, 2020 12:20 AM

Great! Now we're going to have to sleep with Filipino trans. This is just what I've been waiting for. I could not be happier.

by Anonymousreply 18June 2, 2020 12:28 AM

I had no idea such a filter even existed! I wouldn't have a reason to use it. That's crazy its an option. They need to have a nelly blocker!

by Anonymousreply 19June 2, 2020 12:29 AM

A lot of people are saying it’s something that shouldn’t have even existed

by Anonymousreply 20June 2, 2020 12:35 AM

I've never been on there. Do they have an option for "long-term relationship"? Or is it all dial-a dick?

by Anonymousreply 21June 2, 2020 1:44 AM

I second R19. I never knew that filter existed. Would've gotten rid of the weird Chinks on there if I had seen that dial lol.

by Anonymousreply 22June 2, 2020 1:47 AM

Among the first three questions I get whenever I meet someone in a bar is "what ethnicity are you?" It's happened more times than I can count. People have become so tribal. Why should it matter? I guarantee that people will be asked if this all the time if they are not allowed to put it in their profiles.

by Anonymousreply 23June 2, 2020 2:13 AM

Not into fried chicken, watermelon, tap dancing, spirituals, fried rice, Godzilla movies, Apple products, Hello Kitty.

Problemo el solvedo.

by Anonymousreply 24June 2, 2020 3:01 AM

The filter was only for those who paid anyway. People who want to can still block anyone they don't want to see. I don't pay but even if I did I wouldn't have used it. It still won't make you hook up with people you aren't attracted to. The only filter I would like is the ability to filter out the trans people, of any race.

I did have a black guy on there accuse me of being racist because I kept blocking him. But I didn't block him for being black. I block his profiles because he keeps creating new ones like a crazy person, he is more than double my age and three times my weight.

by Anonymousreply 25June 2, 2020 3:10 AM

Suddenly I’m not racist!!

by Anonymousreply 26June 2, 2020 3:14 AM

I acknowledge the fact that a lot of these people’s racial preferences likely stem from a place of prejudice, but I don’t see how this is such a massive win for everyone else.

More than once now I’ve seen people of color post pictures of their exchanges with racists who hide behind the preference excuse, but a lot of that could’ve been prevented with a race filter issue that keeps these racists away from POC

by Anonymousreply 27June 2, 2020 3:58 AM

Grindr? Lulz. How... quaint.

by Anonymousreply 28June 2, 2020 4:15 AM

I would, also, say that for me, I do have a type. I am primarily attracted to skinny blonde or ginger guys and gals. But, I have still hooked up with plenty of people who don't fit into that definition, including black guys. There is nothing wrong with having a preference, the problem is when you allow your preferences to shut you out from other possibilities.

by Anonymousreply 29June 2, 2020 4:27 AM

Surprise Asian?

I loved him in the Twilight movies.

by Anonymousreply 31June 2, 2020 4:31 AM

Now you know why everyone switched over to Scruff from China-owned Grindr.

by Anonymousreply 32June 2, 2020 4:35 AM

Can we still ask "Dot or Feather?" or, as I was told is politically correct nowadays, "Tech support or casino?"

by Anonymousreply 33June 2, 2020 4:42 AM

R32 Grindr is now US owned

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 34June 2, 2020 4:43 AM

Even worse.

by Anonymousreply 35June 2, 2020 4:45 AM

R35 The US government is largely responsible for it being sold back to a US company, over National Security Concerns.

by Anonymousreply 36June 2, 2020 4:57 AM

I'm with R19 also, never knew it existed, wouldnt have had a use for it. Would like to be able to filter out bears though and prioritise nellys

by Anonymousreply 37June 2, 2020 5:56 AM

This is the best thing they’ve done

by Anonymousreply 38June 3, 2020 3:40 PM

I wonder if gays realize Grindr is China owned

by Anonymousreply 39June 3, 2020 3:41 PM

R36 Mizz Lindsey pushed the initiative. Her was concerned.

by Anonymousreply 40June 3, 2020 3:45 PM

r39, not any more

by Anonymousreply 41June 3, 2020 8:48 PM

People who are searching for me can finally find me

by Anonymousreply 42June 3, 2020 9:20 PM

OP LOL all the good looking white guys you obsess over( in Brooklyn) have you blocked on Grindr already so they won’t be seeing you anyway.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 43June 4, 2020 12:29 AM

Hmm. I guess it’s just like real life, then. I don’t have to date people I’m not attracted to, but I do have to see them.

What’s the point of the app, then?

(It’s an academic argument for me, because I’m married and old.)

by Anonymousreply 44June 4, 2020 1:30 AM

it’s all about fucking. It’s not like just in real life.

by Anonymousreply 45June 4, 2020 1:32 AM

R45, you’re right.

But my point still stands. They’re making the app less efficient. It’s like when the server makes you sit through hearing “this evening’s specials!” when you already know you want the ravioli. Or being forced to read every menu in the food court before ordering when you already know what you want.

by Anonymousreply 46June 4, 2020 1:57 AM

Last time I checked my area, it was about 25% trans.

by Anonymousreply 47June 4, 2020 2:01 AM

R47 I would move asap.

by Anonymousreply 48June 4, 2020 2:03 AM

Grindr is fucked up. WHen they launched their "Kindr Grindr" campaign, they had a video that included a trans person whining "They asked what genitals I have? Can you Bee-LEEEEVE it?? Like, what the fuck?"

Ummm. it's a fucking SEX APP!!!!! Whether you have a penis or a vagina is pretty fucking relevant!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 49June 4, 2020 2:58 AM

I think it was that same person who I recall complaining about how, as a trans woman, they had received 'hateful' comments about how "my boobs were too small".

It reeked of EST. Why would a trans *woman* get that kind of criticism on a GAY app? Unless it was from a tranny-chasing closet case. Why is a trans woman on a men-seeking-men app in the first place?

Grindr has gone downhill in recent years anyway, last I used it, it was heavy with bots, closet cases, freaky fetishists and trans.

by Anonymousreply 50June 4, 2020 3:29 AM

The trans should and the supposed "str8s" who want them need to get off Grindr. It's a Men 4 Men Sex app!!!

by Anonymousreply 51June 4, 2020 3:33 AM

R50 Craigslist getting rid of personals drove all the trannies/hookers to grindr and the tranny chasers followed.

by Anonymousreply 52June 4, 2020 3:34 AM

Let them create their own app. But no, they have to horn in on everything "Gay" and also have their own spaces too.

by Anonymousreply 53June 4, 2020 3:37 AM

Thanks R52, that makes sense.

I laughed when I heard that Grindr had added "gender identity" and " preferred pronouns" as user profile categories. But Scruff recently did the same, despite 'Transgender' having always been a drop-down menu choice for "Tribe". Gee, thanks for clarifying that you are a 'Cis Man', I'd have never guessed for myself.

R53 - at least the Trumpsters tried to make their own dating app, more than once I believe, when they thought they were getting a raw deal in Tinder, etc by supporting their Orange God.

by Anonymousreply 54June 4, 2020 3:49 AM

This will effect gaysians the most, now they have to look at each other’s profiles.

by Anonymousreply 55June 4, 2020 4:15 AM

Good. The idea of weeding out groups as a whole was racist in itself

by Anonymousreply 56June 4, 2020 4:44 AM

I've seen many profiles on there of black guys saying in all caps NO WHITE BOIS, so I'm guessing they aren't happy with this development.

by Anonymousreply 57June 4, 2020 4:47 AM

R57 literally have never seen that. Ever. You’re making that up.

by Anonymousreply 58June 4, 2020 4:48 AM

Maybe it is just my area. But there is at least ten that pop up on my nearby screen that has had that on their profiles off and on for years. I guess it could be because we have some Black Hebrew Israelites around here but I doubt they are on grindr.

by Anonymousreply 59June 4, 2020 4:51 AM

I just checked Scruff, they don't have a race filter either. Growlr, on the other hand, will probably never get rid of it.

by Anonymousreply 60June 4, 2020 4:54 AM

They should just include women as an option, lest anyone be accused of being sexist.

by Anonymousreply 61June 4, 2020 4:55 AM

R56 shut up , you keep repeating yourself lol

by Anonymousreply 62June 4, 2020 5:13 AM

Can you still seek or advertise BBC?

by Anonymousreply 63June 4, 2020 5:15 AM

R63 No you are just “fetishing” black men if you do that.

by Anonymousreply 64June 4, 2020 5:17 AM

R43 there are some beautiful black men out there (as there are beautiful men of all races)

That is most definitely NOT one of them! shudder

by Anonymousreply 65June 4, 2020 5:31 AM

Look, christian fundamentalists trying to micromanage people's sexual lives!

Oops, never mind, it's just identity politics giving them a run for their money.

by Anonymousreply 66June 4, 2020 5:44 AM
prioritise nellys

Said no one ever.

by Anonymousreply 67June 4, 2020 5:49 AM

Now seriously though, what's the point of a dating app that forces you to see everyone? The whole point of dating is that you search based on your personal taste and interest, if a company decides you're forced to sieve through all that shit, the whole app loses its purpose. Of course there are racists people who won't date you so what? Do you want to force a racist to fuck you? What kind of nonsense logic is this supposed to have?

by Anonymousreply 68June 4, 2020 5:55 AM

R68 would you really consider a white person that has never dated or had sex with a black or asian person racist or vice versa?

by Anonymousreply 69June 4, 2020 6:03 AM
would you really consider a white person that has never dated or had sex with a black or asian person racist or vice versa?

No I would not. There's no way of knowing the reasons behind someone's preference unless you can read their minds, for sure some are racists and others just have a different preference. Contrary to what pseudo-scientific identity politics wants us to believe, there are many factors, including genetic predispositions that affect our personal tastes that are not socially constructed, the buzzword the woke crowd loves to use but rarely understands in its sociological context.

What we do know from a scientific perspective is that exposition to diversity has a real impact on the development of some tastes and with familiarity in the brain, which means that the more diversity a person is exposed to from an early age, the higher the chances they won't feel threatened by it because it's something their brains are trained to recognize and the bigger the chances they can lust after, but this alone isn't enough.

by Anonymousreply 70June 4, 2020 6:26 AM

Removing those filters will ensure that true love will become the end result.

ahahahahahahahaha. You can't make people want what they don't want to fuck.

by Anonymousreply 71June 4, 2020 8:29 AM

It is a double-edged sword. The Asian gays who moan that white men who block them are racist will no longer be able to block blacks, Latinos, South Asians and Middle Easterners either. Let's face it, 75% of the GAMs who whine about the racist dating behavior of white men are obsessed with only dating white men themselves.

by Anonymousreply 72June 4, 2020 9:20 AM

This doesn’t change anything. White guys who are young, fit and conventionally attractive will still be the most sought after. I think it’s important not to conflate Systemic racism and oppression with sexual preferences. People like what they like. There’s someone for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 73June 4, 2020 9:26 AM

From a practical perspective you are correct, R73. But it would be foolish to think the two are unrelated academically.

by Anonymousreply 74June 4, 2020 9:32 AM

Here's what I'll say on this topic. I'm a, quote-unquote "person of color." I don't give a shit if someone else finds me attractive or not or even what their reasons are for that attraction or lack of attraction. And I certainly don't think I'm entitled to a fuck... which is a seriously gross attitude for anyone to have. I'm a... solid 6 ... if I've been hydrating and getting my squats in and I'm fine with that. I get the job done. I can put my back into it.

My family is from a country of more than 1 billion people. I think the notion that there every man in my ethnic group/identity can be lumped together in one monolith is what's a touch annoying. Yeah, maybe you're not attracted to hairy guys or to hairless guys or skinny guys or fat guys or overly muscular guys or tall guys or short guys or whatever, but the idea that you've determined that everyone in an entire ethnic group is unattractive is just bizarre to me. Like, surely there are SOME men in every ethnic group you will find attractive. Maybe I'm just a big ol slut, but I think it's a shame to cut off all those options with one swipe.

I guess it's just the nature of being an ethnic minority in the US. You will be seen first as your ethnicity (whatever that means to the guy on the other end) and secondly (if at all) as an individual. Broadly speaking, white men rarely experience that in this country.

Anyway, this pandemic's a bitch and porn just isn't doing it anymore!

by Anonymousreply 75June 4, 2020 9:33 AM

R72 You described the OP as well. He posts threads about “whitey being racist “ every day and also makes a lot of threads about young straight white men on tik tok and twitter everyday.

by Anonymousreply 76June 4, 2020 9:42 AM

Well for chrissakes...as long as they don't eliminate the "Top/Bottom" filter, I'll be happy...

by Anonymousreply 77June 4, 2020 10:32 AM

It’s all about Scruff.

by Anonymousreply 78June 4, 2020 10:36 AM

Scruff where you get more messages from men 4,000 miles away than 400 feet away.

by Anonymousreply 79June 4, 2020 10:40 AM

And by doing this Grindr eliminated all racism in the gay male community! Hurrah!

I hope they're going to tackle ageism by getting rid of that filter too. And body shaming by getting rid of the weight filter. And height-ism by getting rid of that filter too.

Maybe they can get rid of the top / vers top / vers / vers bottom / bottom filter too so we can all be versatile!

People have dating preferences - that's is not necessarily related to how they behave in non-dating situations.

by Anonymousreply 80June 4, 2020 1:19 PM

I’ve used the race filter, but I think of it differently.

There are limited numbers of people you can see, so if you’re in NYC, the first 100 people may be within a mile radius of you. I’ve done the opposite: eliminated all BUT, say, Asians, or Latinos because that’s who I wanted to see at that particular moment, and wanted to have the screen show me those and not the 80 white guys within one mile.

To me it’s like what you’re in the mood for: some nights you want Italian, others Chinese food, others Mexican food and so on.

Since I’ve hooked up with (I think) every race, sometimes I like to see who is around specifically of that race, especially if they’re 4 miles away or something that won’t show up in the closest.

by Anonymousreply 81June 4, 2020 1:36 PM

You all miss the point. Why? Because you’re ignorant white men.

This is not to “make you” have sex with anyone. You have sex with who you want (or who you can get). It is that now you can’t hide in a white bubble. You now have to see everyone who is around you on the app. Like real life. No more hiding in a bubble of whiteness.

by Anonymousreply 82June 4, 2020 2:22 PM

R82 try this:

You all miss the point. Why? Because you're ignorant black men. This is not to "make you" have sex with anyone. You have sex with who you want (or who you can get). It is that now you can't hide in a black bubble. You now have to see everyone who is around you on the app. Like real life. No more hiding in a bubble of blackness.

by Anonymousreply 83June 4, 2020 2:36 PM

R83 dude. Why are you always lying? Stop.

One day you will claim black gays only want white men then the next minute claim black gays have no whites in their profiles, which I have never seen and I’ve been on Grindr for a decade and travel.

You’re full of shit. Just stop.

by Anonymousreply 84June 4, 2020 2:40 PM

I'm not lying.

I just object to the thought policing and second guessing of other people's motives of why they want to filter out whoever they want to filter. It's no one's fucking business but theirs.

In the grand scheme of things, whether Grindr has an ethnicity filter or not makes not one bit of difference to tackling actual racism.

But it gets them some nice publicity.

by Anonymousreply 85June 4, 2020 2:50 PM

Race and age "just are" and cannot be changed. So why just race? They need to eliminate age too. And if you think you can get around it by having plastic surgery, well there should be a category for that. If you're fit and handsome but you've cheated and had a facelift and use steroids, you should be forced to admit it.

by Anonymousreply 86June 4, 2020 2:50 PM

You are lying. Show screenshots of no whites...

by Anonymousreply 87June 4, 2020 2:51 PM

I've not see the "no whites" but I have seen "looking for another brother (brutha)" several times.

, it's really gauche to speak on behalf of other groups to which you do not belong. Especially since it's clear that you yourself are clearly not attracted to black guys, and thus this change won't benefit you in any way.

by Anonymousreply 98June 4, 2020 3:35 PM

That accomplishes what exactly? The whole point of dating apps is to live in bubbles, bubbles of people you want to fuck, see and interact. If people wanted the real world they wouldn't be glued to their phones would they?

Blacks and Asians are massively whining on Grindr's Instagram (cringey and deserving of a thread of its own) that they now can't hide in their black or Asian bubble, so there you have it.

by Anonymousreply 99June 4, 2020 4:15 PM

Man, those screenshots at R96 and R97 certainly shut R87/ 's fat mouth up right quick.

by Anonymousreply 100June 4, 2020 4:23 PM

This won’t change much. Just throwing a bone to unattractive people.

The ones who complain about this are always self loathing minorities who only want white dick.

I’m hiv + and I’m glad when I saw profiles discriminating against me. Helped me block and avoid those losers. I also blocked guys who discriminated on race. Usually the same types.

By focusing on gay men who don’t discriminate against status, I’ve mostly only had great experiences online.

If I focused on the sad losers that discriminate against status, I’d be miserable and always running into them.

Miserable people focus on what they can’t have.

by Anonymousreply 101June 4, 2020 4:44 PM

Wow. 2 profiles... how amazing.

by Anonymousreply 102June 4, 2020 4:46 PM

The moron who is saying the person claiming no one says "no whites" is lying is clearly a dumb, virtue signalling white person who has never interacted with the urban community.

Otherwise he would be familiar with concept of "brothas only"

Fail!

by Anonymousreply 103June 4, 2020 5:35 PM

Yup. 2 whole profiles

by Anonymousreply 104June 4, 2020 6:27 PM

The very very very few Black people who say no whites is nothing compared to the many many many white people who say no blacks or Asians.

And most times they’re saying it as a counter to the no blacks

by Anonymousreply 105June 4, 2020 6:28 PM

The reality is that prior to apps like Grindr and Scruff, we had to go out into the real world to cruise, or socialize in bars and clubs. And while we were out, we saw everyone else who was there. No filters. True, you could ignore or cold-shoulder someone you weren't interested in, but they couldn't be made invisible. Now we are so spoiled that we complain if people we don't find personally appealing are taking up space on our screens! WTF?

When I go online I see a ton of guys who I'm not the least bit interested in (as most of them feel about me, too). But I just scroll past them. I don't feel the need to block them, and erase them from the world. Horny beggar that I am, I'm not so desperate that I have to surround myself with pictures of guys I think are hot -but that I am unlikely to ever meet, let alone fuck. If you have a fetish for Asian guys, black guys, or trans guys -fine with me. I have a thing for uncut latinos, Brits, and guys with great pecs. Doesn't mean other guys aren't hot, and that I wouldn't jump at the chance to have sex with them. In fact, if I filtered out everyone but uncut latinos in London my sex life would be even more dismal than it already is! It's the man who is hot, not the race.

Making people invisible is antisocial behavior. If you do it by race, it's racist behavior. You can pretend that it's just "your sexual preference" but that doesn't cut it. No one is forcing you to talk to anyone online -Let along hook up. When you shut people out by race, that is racist.

by Anonymousreply 106June 4, 2020 9:28 PM

Everyone has a type. Forcing you to view profiles you aren’t into is ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 107June 4, 2020 9:41 PM

No one is forcing anyone to view profiles! That's the step you take when you click on a picture. Not interested? Don't click on the picture!

So, when you go to the grocery store, the brands and items you don't plan to buy should be removed from the shelves??

When you go out to a restaurant, do you expect them to create a special menu with just the things you like on it?

by Anonymousreply 108June 4, 2020 9:48 PM

No one is forcing you to click on the profiles

by Anonymousreply 109June 4, 2020 9:49 PM

That’s a false equivalency, shopping for food online allows you to filter and search for what you want. Who the fuck would shop online for food if you had to scroll past everything you don’t want? Please.

by Anonymousreply 110June 4, 2020 9:53 PM

R97 and fair enough too. He's making himself clear, I respect that. Hope he isnt getting constantly messaged by illiterate white guys the way I got constantly messaged by illiterate bears when I was on services like this. The existence of all these filters is news to me, and I find it fascinating. Like I said I wouldnt bother with a race filter but I'm totally down for a weight one

Why? Is weight not something that also either appeals to you or doesn’t?

So you’re then ok with discrimination I suppose. After all, it’s the same thing.
Why? Is weight not something that also either appeals to you or doesn’t? So you’re then ok with discrimination I suppose. After all, it’s the same thing.

I'm not R112, but I'll answer for him. Preference is preference. No one owes you sex and love. People will filter their desire regardless of your trying to controle their sexual lives like a Church lady.

For some weight is the issue, for others race, others height, and the list goes on. No Identity Politics or stupid childish campaign will make a dick get harder for something we don't desire.

All you do with your virtue signalling is help the far right.

You must live in flyoverstan it are just lying or stupid. (Or all of the above) .

In New York very very few people actually put “no blacks, not Asians etc”. The “no gets no femmes” thing is from the days of AOL.

In 2020 it’s “masc4masc” And as mentioned above, quite a few “brothas only” and I’ve actually seen “no whites” by both blacks and whites.

by Anonymousreply 120June 5, 2020 4:51 AM

Bravo, r114. You saved me the trouble.

by Anonymousreply 121June 5, 2020 4:55 AM

OK debate is over R117 has had to resort to CAPS LOCK.

I see some apps have preference for eye color and hair color. So all people have to do is set to blue eyes, blond hair / red hair and they can have their Aryan fantasies still.

To be honest I don't care what filters are or are not there. But I do very much object to some asshole I don't know deciding for me who I can and cannot look at on a dating app. That's my decision and it is my business. We're not talking about 3 or 4 years being taught that racism is wrong, we're talking about grown adults (mental age notwithstanding). If a guy is a genuine racist, removing this filter won't make a blind bit of difference either way. And yes obviously I wish people weren't racist, just like I wish people wouldn't vote Republican. But they need educating, not hectoring at.

Everyone discriminates in dating - absolutely everyone, and as I said before, it's no one's business but mine what my preferences are in terms of physique, personality, age or anything else.

by Anonymousreply 122June 5, 2020 7:23 AM

R114 thanks for that, well put. I will add though that race like many other attributes is something you are born with and is out of your control, whereas weight IS something you can control - and nobody is born fat (or thin). I am probably not muscular enough to appeal to some people, and thats OK

by Anonymousreply 123June 5, 2020 8:40 AM

R114, I’m r113 and, ironically, I agree with you. I think there should be filters if for no other reason than to make things easier as I stated at r81. I think you missed the point of my post.

My point to r112 is he wanted it both ways: “I don’t want a race filter, but I would like a weight filter,” not acknowledging that for some there’s reasons for filters. As you put it, if your dick doesn’t get hard for certain things, blocking those things isn’t hurting anything.

by Anonymousreply 124June 5, 2020 1:29 PM

Why is this fool replying to himself on a different account? I can’t anymore.

He’s psychotic.

R120, r125 a is losing it, go stuff your face with donuts dear..

by Anonymousreply 126June 5, 2020 2:27 PM

R124 maybe I wasnt clear - I dont object to a race filter, just wouldnt use it myself. Would use a weight one though - if I was using Grindr in the first place

As you said yourself "if your dick doesn’t get hard for certain things, blocking those things isn’t hurting anything", which is why I didnt have a problem with the black guy in the image at R97 making himself clear about what he wants

by Anonymousreply 127June 5, 2020 2:33 PM

R127 - why is ok for the black guy in the post from R97 but not ok for white guys to say it?

Either both are equally bad or both are equally valid.

by Anonymousreply 128June 5, 2020 2:39 PM

Look no further than the freaks Grindr is promoting as their "Queer voices" at their Instagram to understand the outcry. Keep giving voices to them, your business will thrive.

by Anonymousreply 129June 5, 2020 3:11 PM

As transwomen are in fact men they have every right to be on grindr.

by Anonymousreply 130June 5, 2020 3:14 PM
weight IS something you can control - and nobody is born fat (or thin).

Actually that is not true. There are a just as many variants that make someone be overweight that is beyond objective control of a person. There are hormonal changes, there are chances in metabolism and of course there are mental health issues that can't be easily cured without medication and therapy that will force people to engage in all sorts of compulsive behavior. Stating that all fat people are just lazy show deep ignorance on the biology of the body and the many ways we operate. Some people are just lazy, that's true, but most people are just facing bigger challenges than just the lack of motivation to be healthier.

Thank goodness one app / site is treating its users like adults. Well done Recon:

The last couple of months have been testing for us all during the COVID-19 pandemic and, in particular, the last few weeks have been painful for me, as a black man, to see all the events unfold after the murder of George Floyd and countless others at the hands of the police. The last few days have been difficult on both a personal and professional level, regarding the issue of whether we at Recon will remove the option to filter by ethnicity.

It saddens me to see brands using this time to exploit and detract from the main message of the Black Lives Matter movement, by shifting focus onto something under the guise of supporting it. Calls to remove the ethnicity filter on other platforms have been going on for years and removing it now gives the impression that the filter is the sole reason for racist behaviour amongst users. I’m not sure of the diversity make-up of the companies behind some of the other apps, but Team Recon includes prominent black voices who would not take such a decision so lightly.

This has been an ongoing conversation for everyone at Recon, as a lot of thought and consideration was needed concerning the use of the filter for people of colour rather than the white people that use it as a racist tool. The removal of this tool only looks at it from a white perspective, which directly feeds into the systemic racism that we are trying to dismantle, and by no means tackles the root of the problem. We want to have a platform that enables kink and offers a safe space for all, not just for the white people who do not understand right from wrong. Therefore, we will not be removing the option to filter by ethnicity at this time.

Yes, I am a person of colour, but I cannot speak for all people of colour on what we think or feel regarding this issue, but I can speak to my own experience, and those of the POC around me based on the interactions I have shared with my brothers and sisters around the world. We will therefore reach out to our members of colour, as well as community leaders and other organisations to figure out how we can make Recon a safer space.

When a person of colour says that they have experienced racism, believe them! We will not tolerate our members spreading hate on our platform and are looking at ways to prevent them from returning once they have been suspended. We want to take the time to work on more stringent reporting procedures and policies that tackle racist behaviour, including creating an anti-racist charter that we expect every current and subsequent new member to abide by.

Lastly, I want to make it clear that Recon supports the Black Lives Matter movement and will be making a donation to help continue the fight for freedom, liberation and justice. We implore you to support the cause and other organisations who are working with people of colour and the protests happening around the world.

The only way that we can all be equal is to embrace the diversity within our community.

Sandy Pianim Recon Brand Director

by Anonymousreply 137June 10, 2020 12:56 PM

Yeah, I will say, as a "man of color" as well... I see both sides. I think it's inevitable that a feature like this helps perpetuate racism, but, conversely, it also helps one embrace diversity. I know that sounds contradictory, but hear me out. It's been a minute since I've sued Grindr or Scruff, but, as I recall one or both of them had features that showed you the most liked/contacted/favorited/Woof'd whatever men nearby. Inevitably, those lists and grids were dominated by white men, so I would sometimes use the ethnicity filter to be able to see other nearby men of color. Not to exclude white men, but just to ensure I could see a more diverse array of men in my area.

I still find the idea of permanently excluding an entire race rather odd -- essentially, declaring that there are no attractive people in an entire ethnic group feels like a bit of a broad brush -- but you do you, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 138June 10, 2020 1:12 PM

I don't care. I'm still not having sex with Chinese men.

by Anonymousreply 139June 10, 2020 1:12 PM

since I've *USED Grindr or Scruff that should read. I haven't sued anyone. Yet?

by Anonymousreply 140June 10, 2020 1:13 PM

Using his numerous accounts to comment lmao.

by Anonymousreply 141June 10, 2020 1:13 PM

Eventually someone will create a new gay "dating" app that will have what grindr had before and all the gays will move on and the grindr execs will blame everyone but themselves for that. This isn't going to cause races to mix, it's just going to create more extreme divides.

by Anonymousreply 142June 10, 2020 1:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 146June 10, 2020 2:15 PM

I thought the entire of point of these sites was to help you pinpoint potentials that most met your physical and sexual preferences. How stupid this all has become. Everyone has become so caught up in making a grand gesture, they don't really think it through.

by Anonymousreply 148June 10, 2020 3:56 PM

Why stop at ethnicity? Remove all the filters so every fat whore can be seen!!!

by Anonymousreply 149June 10, 2020 4:02 PM

I've never even used it, didn't know it was available. I have never considered being 'put out' or inconvenienced in anyway while doing a scroll down. R138 Your wrong, there are tons of gorgeous Black guys that get featured on SCRUFF's 'most woofed' , Arabs as well. Having this feature or not makes about as much difference as tits on a snake. It's not a big deal. However, with that, I do believe it's removal is the definition of symbolic pandering. It will affect nothing.

by Anonymousreply 150June 11, 2020 1:35 AM

For long as there have been gay personal adverts or whatever means of hooking up you find various filters.

Village Voice, the Advocate and others in their day had tons of adverts with no "fats", "fems", or whatever else someone didn't want to be bothered when going through responses.

People want what they want; if someone just isn't that into this or that race, trans or fems removing filters isn't going to suddenly open up a whole new world.

by Anonymousreply 151June 11, 2020 2:10 AM

R152, yes, we KNOW.

Guess you guys are getting a taste of that medicine now.

by Anonymousreply 153June 11, 2020 2:31 AM

It’s not really “racist”. It’s discrimination, and it’s perfectly okay when determining who you want to FUCK.

It’s not okay when deciding who to hire, or who you’ll rent or sell a home to. It’s not okay in many situations. But when it comes to who you share your body with, you get to choose.

by Anonymousreply 154June 11, 2020 2:33 AM

R154 Im a fat puerto rican bottom who passes for black mixed and I want to get fucked by a hot “straight” white man but they never message me back or they block me right away wah wah. Racists! Why can’t I get what I want!!

by Anonymousreply 155June 11, 2020 2:36 AM

As a Hispanic short gay guy, I am just not attracted to other Hispanics, Asians or Blacks.

by Anonymousreply 156June 11, 2020 2:52 AM

R138's anecdote is indeed outdated, R150 is right. It might have been the case some years back that Scruff's Most Woof'd section was mostly White, but that's certainly not the case these days.

Checking the section now, the most common ethnicity there (at around one-third) is Hispanic/Latino, followed by Multi-Racial (roughly one-fifth), which of course is ambiguous. They definitely outnumber the White guys in that section, though. A good amount of Black and Middle Eastern guys too (I'd estimate at around 10-15% each).

by Anonymousreply 157June 11, 2020 3:22 PM

It has been around in some form or another forever. I remember when I was in high school reading the personals on the back page of our towns weekly classified. One of the ads went something like: "Sissy TV seeks handsome WHITE butch straight guy. You don't have to be rich but your princess will want to be spoiled". I was so confused by this ad at the time.

by Anonymousreply 158June 11, 2020 3:31 PM

The penis wants what the penis wants.

by Anonymousreply 159June 13, 2020 3:55 AM

R157 speaking of Multi-Racial, I’ve noticed lately a number of guys that look straight up white have been labeling themselves as multi-racial or mixed. There was one guy near me that looked like he was out of Norse Mythology who labeled himself as mixed. He also linked his Instagram with pictures of his very white family. I can’t figure out if this is some sort of racist statement or a form of self hate.

by Anonymousreply 160June 13, 2020 5:41 PM

r160, you are offended if people who pass for white want to acknowledge their multi-racial heritage?

by Anonymousreply 161June 13, 2020 8:52 PM

R161 No, believe me I know many biracial people, I am related to many biracial people. The people I am talking about are not biracial, they are not passing as white, they are some of the whitest white people I have ever seen. The one I mentioned in R160 might be bi or multiracial only if you count a mix of Swedish and Norwegian as biracial. He linked his Instagram which has pictures of him with his parents and siblings, they could be on a poster for the Aryan Brotherhood.

by Anonymousreply 162June 13, 2020 11:51 PM

Yeah, it was interesting seeing the array of guys who identified as 'Multi-Racial' but whatever, doesn't matter to me.

I actually realized after posting that I was looking at the Most Woof'd for new members and not the general Most Woof'd section. After checking out the correct section, percentages didn't change for the most part - Hispanic/Latino was still the most popular at around the same percentage (one-third), and the percentage of White guys (around 20%) also stayed the same. The only big change was that Middle Eastern was the second most popular ethnicity at 25%. That wasn't surprising based on my general observations about the app; Middle Eastern guys are [bold]very[/bold] well-liked on Scruff.

by Anonymousreply 163June 15, 2020 6:32 AM

I'm 1/32nd Cherokee on my dads side. But I'm the whitest looking white that ever whited. Can I check the multiracial box ?

by Anonymousreply 164June 18, 2020 2:22 AM

You can't force attraction. Doesn't work that way.

by Anonymousreply 165June 18, 2020 2:39 AM

R160 "There was one guy near me that looked like he was out of Norse Mythology"

LOL 🤣🤣🤣
