Christian Cooper - the dude who was harassed by Central Park Karen

"Christian, who is gay, and is believed to be in his late 50s, is a former Marvel Comics editor who worked on popular stories including the Darkhold series and Excalibur, and edited some X-Men collections, reports NewsOne. While working on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Christian developed the first openly gay man for the series, Yoshi Mishima. Mishima is a cadet who is “smart, brave, caring young man who was a capable leader, a skilled officer, and an effective fighter,” according to Gay League."

He's hot. Went to Harvard as well. If you heard him speak, you'd know that white woman had absolutely nothing to worry about. He's a little nelly.

Yeah, once I found out that detail, I decided BOTH of them were horrible people. I don't currently have a dog, but when I did I would have freaked the fuck out if a person started to give my dog a "treat." Especially if that person was complaining about my dog in someway. I wouldn't have made it a racial issue, but I would have gotten into an argument with the person and suspected them of trying to poison my dog.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 28, 2020 4:27 AM |
R18 here. My friend says birders often carry dog treats because the sight of them often encourages a recalcitrant dog owner to leash the dog immediately or, if no owner is around, a birder will hold on to the dog until the owner shows up. Unleashed dogs chase the birds away.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 28, 2020 4:42 AM |
The media totally eviscerating this woman and comparing her to a murderer is a far cry from 2017 when every man accused was guilty until proven innocent and all women were to be believed. Even Tara Reade still has credibility. What a strange turn of events when you add a dose of race into a story.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 28, 2020 4:47 AM |
Maybe it is just the ones I have met, but every birder I've ever known has been weird. Like serial killer weird.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 28, 2020 4:47 AM |
R46, um, we have video proof of this incident and it has nothing to do with #metoo. Who has compared the Cooper woman to a murderer??

by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 28, 2020 5:18 AM |
Not R46, but there are people on Twitter saying she was trying to get him murdered by telling the cops that an African American man was threatening her. They are saying that if you ever call the cops on a black man you are saying to the cops “kill him.”
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 28, 2020 5:23 AM |
[quote]They are saying that if you ever call the cops on a black man you are saying to the cops “kill him.”
Should we ask George Floyd for his opinion?
Oh? Never mind.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 28, 2020 6:02 AM |
R51 I’m not saying it doesn’t happen. But it doesn’t happen as often as people think. For every incident like that one there are dozens where the black guy is not killed. The argument from some on Twitter is basically never call the cops on a black man under any circumstances, or you are a murderer.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 28, 2020 6:39 AM |
If I came across him in the Ramble I would go for any treats he may offer.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 28, 2020 7:17 AM |
R12, He came across a self righteous bitch in the video. Though I still love this intellectual gay black brother. But that not the point. The point is this woman doing the wrong thing felt so entitled and superior that called the cops and not only blatantly lied but also invoked the deepest darkest aspects of societal bigotry ad hysteria: the old trope of the dangerous black man attacking a white woman. This woman is probably educated and behaved like an ignorant antebellum hillbilly traitor.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 28, 2020 7:31 AM |

Back when I was with a volunteer cat rescue group, I used to carry good dog treats with me at all times.
It helped when I was in a remote-ish area and needed to divert stray or off-leash dogs' attention away from me or the cats I was tending.
I don't think this guy's carrying treats was strange at all. And this from someone who thinks most hardcore birders are as nutty as they think we cat rescuers are.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 28, 2020 8:38 PM |
ex New Yorker birder here. The Ramble is a protected habitat. There are signs EVERYWHERE that dogs must be leashed. It's the only safe migratory habitat in the middle of concrete Manhattan. Dogs ripping up grown cover are a disaster. Everyone who's a regular there knows that.
Carrying dog treats is an old birder strategy. You offer the dog a treat, which gets the owner to finally put the damn leash on the dog. Chris Cooper is on the NY Audubon board. He knows the drill.
Yeah, the Ramble was a gay cruising spot back in the olden days (see: Angels in America). Now it's got birdwatchers. Newsflash: Manhattan changed a bunch since the 80s.

R112 How Trumpian of you to keep stamping your foot and trying to focus on the woman. Nobody is giving her a pass.
That doesn't change the fact that he initiated the confrontation, told her she wouldn't like what he was about to do, and tried to lure the dog away from its owner. All of which he left out of the video. If he had included his creepy behavior, there would be more sympathy for her. But please, tell us all again about what Amy did while you ignore his culpability.
The very fact that he omitted his own threats indicate that he knew how bad it would look.
I
by Anonymous | reply 114 | June 2, 2020 5:50 PM |
R114 - it was hardly a "threat," more like a quid pro quo - if you don't follow the clearly stated and posted rule abut leashing your mutt then I won't follow the unspoken rule about not offering him a dog bone. As stated numerous times in discussing this incident, his "dog treat" tactic is a common one amongst birders when dealing with entitled scofflaw dog owners in the Ramble.
AND he's hot!
by Anonymous | reply 115 | June 2, 2020 7:19 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 117 | June 3, 2020 12:35 AM |
NYers know very well they are supposed to leash their dogs in all parks except In enclosed marked dog runs. This woman was way out of line. Birders are all over Central Park and as far as I have observed in a lifetime of going into the park (I’m in my 60s), a normal and even lovely part of the Park vibe. The Ramble did become a gay cruising and hook up destination from the late 60s well into the 90s. I realized it in about 1971 when I was wandering through the Park and thought I’d landed in heaven. There were hot men everywhere. But that’s all changed and the birders are back. It’s also much better attended due to the Central Park Conservancy, a private fund which supplements the City resources. The Conservancy has been primarily responsible for turning Central Park back into a beautifully attended park.

The Ramble is a protected habitat. Christian was not being "self-righteous" by asking Amy to leash her dog as required. Unleashed dogs damage ground nests and can injure/kill the birds.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | June 3, 2020 1:06 AM |
I'm impressed by the few posters working overtime to find fault with Christian Cooper's actions or somehow put the two on equal footing. Hope someone is paying you well for your efforts.
There was nothing ambiguous about the banality of his request or the woman's overwrought response, including repeatedly positing his race as an element of her "danger". Nor is there any ambiguity about the historic record of police over-reaction--up to fatality-- to ALLEGATIONS of threats posed by black men, especially to white women.
Luckily, the vast majority of the civilized world was as mortified by this episode as most posters here.

Isn’t anyone else LOL at the sudden law abiding righteousness towards unleashed dogs???
by Anonymous | reply 121 | June 3, 2020 8:01 PM |
R121, it's not righteousness; dogs in urban parks are always a red hot issue. IIn this case, there are plenty of places in Central Park where dogs are allowed off-leash. One was literally right across the street from the confrontation in the Ramble.
There are almost NO protected bird sanctuaries in NYC. So yeah, birders take that particular area's leash rules very seriously, and anyone who walks their dogs there regularly knows it.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | June 3, 2020 9:37 PM |

Maybe if you address his creepy behavior and the parts of the confrontation that didn't make it to the video then you can engage in discourse.
Instead, you repeat your opinion and expect the rest of us to accept it as fact. I don't see how you can type anything with your fingers in your ears and yelling so as not to pay attention to anybody else.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | June 4, 2020 1:25 PM |
Lemme tell you how whiteness works:
After intentionally trying to get a black man killed by filing a police report, Amy Cooper asked for her previously confiscated dog back.
And got it.
She threatened @NYCockerRescue and they caved.

R114 is working very hard to spin this. Hmm, wonder why. Funny how he tosses accusations of being “Trumpian.” Wonder where that comes from. Hmmmm....

Even if he's not Vlad he's an idiot.

The Rambles...not...safe...
by Anonymous | reply 132 | June 4, 2020 4:11 PM |
So she got the dog back. BFD. You people are obsessed. I didn’t see anything about her threatening the agency.

How long have bird watchers who go bird watching been calling themselves... "birders"
by Anonymous | reply 134 | June 8, 2020 4:45 PM |
That term has been around for at least 10-20 years, R134

[quote]She was wrong, but why was he making such a big deal about it. The dog wasn’t eating any birds.
Because his name is “Mary!”
by Anonymous | reply 136 | June 8, 2020 4:52 PM |
I thought "birder" was what you call it when someone kills a bird.

[quote]She was wrong, but why was he making such a big deal about it. The dog wasn’t eating any birds.
Because the world doesn't revolve around you, her or her illegally unleashed fucking dog.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | June 8, 2020 6:54 PM |
Some people are petrified of dogs, and I feel bad for the wheelchair-bound who have to face unleashed dogs coming up to them, and not knowing if they are vicious and prone to attacking strangers.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | June 8, 2020 8:50 PM |
Poor R138. So angry that the rest of the world won't agree with him. Don't they know who you are? And they dare to not give you the place you deserve as the ultimate arbiter about all things race based.
It must be the white supremacists.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | June 8, 2020 10:20 PM |
R140, I couldn't give less of a shit even if the race aspect wasn't there. If you're a dick who thinks the laws don't apply to you, stay home in your feces-scented shithole with your petting zoo. You're no different than the idiots who let their kids run around restaurants or airplanes or assholes talking on their cell phones during movies...except, letting your dog loose is actually ILLEGAL.
I can tell you smell bad.

where is the ramble? what streets is it adjacent to?
by Anonymous | reply 142 | June 9, 2020 6:33 AM |
Has the WTC also found another job already? The other Beckys in her circle would have clucking with sympathy, telling her that none of it was her fault and hooked her up with a new job.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | June 9, 2020 7:10 AM |
R119 You say The Ramble is a protected habitat place but this says the Hallett Nature Sanctuary is the best place for birds because it is permanently fenced-off.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | June 9, 2020 7:23 AM |
If he's so pretty why hasn't he been picked up for some network TV show on birding yet?
by Anonymous | reply 145 | June 9, 2020 8:09 AM |
R144, I cannot understand your point.
Are you saying Christian Cooper should have ignored Amy and told the birds to move on to Hallett Nature Sanctuary?
Or are you saying the Ramble does not need its protected status because of Hallett Nature Sanctuary?
Or that the birds can only support one sanctuary in the park?
by Anonymous | reply 146 | June 9, 2020 12:13 PM |
How big is the fenced section of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary? Does the fenced Hallett Nature Sanctuary need to be made larger to protect birds from free range dogs? Can birdwatchers watch birds from outside the fence?
by Anonymous | reply 147 | June 9, 2020 12:48 PM |
[quote] Is 'bird watching' now code for 'I came to Central Park in search of the men's bathroom to troll for some cock'?
...with your sister. You do realize he was with his sister, right?

Can we get back to the topic at hand? Who has had him?
by Anonymous | reply 149 | June 9, 2020 1:03 PM |
He really is a good-looking guy.

Ah, the pinnacle of intellectual banter. Such sardonic wit.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | June 9, 2020 6:04 PM |
R152, I stand by what i stated. You can attempt to be as condescending as you please, but I think you have questionable hygiene. People like you who ignore the illegality of what she did with her dog, have a sense of entitlement when it comes to their pets or even when they don't have them, so there's a tendency to be careless in general. I don't think you shower every day.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | June 9, 2020 6:24 PM |
He could make me convert to Christian-ity.
