It's looking likely that my husband & I will be moving Anacortes with my brother & his family this summer. My brother is in the Navy and his job has relocated him to the area from San Diego where they have lived for 10 years. They have two teenage girls and my husband is 20 years older than me (I'm 45) so there will be three generations under the house. We've lived in NYC for decades so this will be a fun change. We're looking forward to getting involved with their community theater. Anyone from the area have advice?

Was this another failed CBS pilot that aired after Steel Magnolias in August 1990?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 27, 2020 1:40 PM |
That sounds like a nightmare. Cramming into a house with a whole bunch of people - and moving across the country form a thriving urban center to the middle of nowhere. Sitcoms are not reality.

Vicious meets Full House
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 27, 2020 3:56 PM |
That's funny. I actually told my brother that this was like a sitcom. As for cramming, we're getting a really big house on 2.5 acres with lots of room for everybody.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 30, 2020 3:36 AM |
Do you imagine there’ll be a lot of community theatre this particular summer ?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 30, 2020 3:39 AM |
Why does your brother'sjob dictate where you live? If he gets reassigned you are going to pack up and follow?
So confused.

In Anacortes all seems to breathe freedom and peace and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 30, 2020 3:41 AM |
Well I hope you’re wearing a mask during all that freedom and peace breathing.

R6- they are streaming their theater for the rest of the season. They’re actually selling tickets for a whole slate of performances and if you buy one, you get a password for that performance. Hopefully the theater reopened for public performances by 2021.6
R7- my brother invited us to live with them and we said yes. He won’t be moved again. He is retiring in 2023. He is a psychiatrist and may move somewhere if he can’t find work in Anacortes but if they moved, we’d keep the house and potentially run it as a bed and breakfast.
R9- I’m wearing a mask. I’m not r8.

New York City to Anacortes? Oh my God.
Well, if you're lucky, your place will have nice views (and not of the oil refinery).
I mean, it's a beautiful area in many ways (people do retire there), but it's going to be an adjustment, OP.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 31, 2020 4:49 AM |
Yes, r12.
I grew up in Springfield, Oregon and I love the weather in the PNW.
The house they’ve made an offer for is at Whistle Lake so surrounded by trees and no view of water. It has the most space. They’re looking at another with amazing views but less space.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 31, 2020 5:18 AM |
Thank you, R16.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 31, 2020 5:27 AM |
I think the set up sounds darling. I find myself getting closer to my family/siblings/et al as I get older, and really like the idea of living in a big house with others... rather than my NYC/LA years as a swinging starlet/waiter.
My mom grew up in a big townhouse with both sets of grandparents still there. It’s natural to want to break free of your family at 18... but there’s also something wonderful about coming home to them later in life. (Provided they’re not Trumpsters, of course.)
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 31, 2020 5:33 AM |
That's a lot of people under one roof. I dunno - have you lived with them before? What does the brother's wife and kids think?
Can't imagine living with 2 teenagers as being a life 'bonus'. Can't imagine all the people in the kitchen trying to get food out of the fridge.
Why is this good OP? Is it just for the summer? Sounds like it's temporary, right?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 31, 2020 5:46 AM |
Katharine Hepburn shared a big house with her grown brother, at times. The kitchen was huge, with separate refrigerators.
It was a family home, and everyone was welcome.

OP, to get yourself ready for the move, I suggest watching Yours, Mine, and Ours. A treat for the whole family.

R19- I have spent nights at their place in the past and have gone on trips with them. My brother's wife and kids love us and we love them. I've been very close to the kids since they were born. I was actually at the birth of the oldest one. Our plan is to move there permanently and if my brother moves after the kids go away to college, my husband and I plan to stay. My husband is looking for this to be his final chapter. He's considering this to be the place he will die.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 31, 2020 8:42 PM |

OP, I know from experience the only way to make this work is for you and your husband have a separate living room/tv room away from the family. A separate kitchen or even a coffee bar for the mornings isn’t a bad idea. You and they will need privacy at times. Relocating teenagers isn’t going to be easy.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 1, 2020 2:25 AM |
I’m sure this has occurred to them. It’s unlikely they’re planning to move into a frat house layout!
OP has said it’s a really big house.

Lars Von Trier does not shoot movies in the U.S. I don’t think he’s even been here. He hates America.
So update: We’ve found an even better house. It’s huge. Wood ceilings, Kitchens on both floors, lots of space for all of us. In this set up, there would be TVs on both floors and would probably not put one in our room. This is only on a half acre and there’s no front yard but the backyard is beautiful. Should I post pictures?

A friend almost bought a house there. He's a gay liberal. He said the town is basically redneck transients working in the oil industry, the harbor is basically full of tankers and ferries, and the refinery is an eyesore. No gay life. Don't know about theater. The only way to know is to go and check it out. Everyone's experience is different. The San Juan Islands are beautiful, esp. if you're a boater.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 3, 2020 12:57 AM |
I've checked it out. The theater is the Anacortes Community Theatre. My husband is flying out on Thursday to look at the house. Excited!!! I think our dog is going to enjoy having more space in the house to run around! We live in a studio here in NYC.

This used to be true, but lots of people have moved in in recent years, including a lot of retirees, and the town has grown a lot and is slightly hipper than it used to be.
No one has mentioned the exceptionally gray, drizzly weather (they'll tell you about a "rain shadow" but don't believe it).

Anacortes is a beautiful town. Lots of hiking areas within a short distance, beautiful views, and some good restaurants, at least a few years ago. Not a day went by when I didn't marvel at the different views from the island. Winter is drizzly rainy and usually in the 40s, but the tree canopy is pretty dense so hiking is still enjoyable. The summer there was usually sunny, in contrast to other areas in coastal WA. Lots of wildlife - deer, bald eagles, great horned owls. There are all types there so I'm sure you'll find people to hang out with. Very nice library, no line to speak of at the DMV, some great street fairs, and the theater group is SURPRISINGLY good. When I lived there the high school performed Spam A Lot and the whole town turned to see it - there is a wonderful sense of community and people really do look out for each other. As for politics, it was a pretty even mix.
After about 6 months you will have no anonymity. You'll be biking down the street and you'll see your hairdresser and your mechanic and the lady from the DMV, and they'll wave or honk. And you'll be in amazing shape because you can bike or walk pretty much anywhere, and you'll be out in the forest lands. Swimming in Whistle Lake is fun, and the air just smells so clean. I envy you; I would move back in a heartbeat.

Anacortes is lovely. It's cute but also "real"...it's a functioning town that has quite a bit of tourism but it's not "touristy" in a cloying way. And, they have a great deli!
And, it's a short jaunt to Mt Vernon the county seat where they have amenities like a mall/multi-plex and Seattle is only a couple hours away.
It's Skagit County so it is a weird mix of conservatives and liberals. Glenn Beck is from Mt Vernon but there's also lots of old hippie families that are farmers...and, hippie author Tom Robbins lives in LaConner. Oh, there's also a great co-op market in Mt. Vernon.

Becoming financially dependent on another person changes the balance of power and can erode a r'ship.

I stayed in Anacortes last year for a few days as part of a trip to the Skagit Valley to see the tulip fields. Anacortes is only about an hour and a half from Seattle, a reasonable day trip and a pretty drive with a lot of charming towns along the way. It's also the gateway to the Puget Sound and a great place for outdoor and nature activities. The town itself seemed a bit depressed to me, but a place is what you make of it and grey skies do that to me, having grown up in a foggy area of the SF Bay Area. Getting involved with the theater is a great idea.
It gets pretty rainy up that way, so be ready for that. Otherwise, it's such a beautiful area. The tulip fields were stunning, we went the week after the big tulip festival when hoards swarm the area. It was wonderful, I love that region.

But he says he can spend the rest of his life in Anacortes. Also- he says my sister in law really wants us there. I didn't note this before but it was her and my brother who invited us to come live with them. They want loved ones going on this journey with them. I'm really excited. I have been to Anacortes many times to and from the Olympic peninsula. I am a northeastern native who has lived in the PNW for over 20 years. I even stayed overnight in one of the motels and dined in a few Anacortes restaurants. There is no way I would want to live there full time. Op, I am sorry you have fallen on hard times. I would just assume this is your only option. I agree with posters who say that this will be a big power shift on important relationships you need to be prepared for. Since your collecting unemployment I highly doubt the viability of you ever buying the house and doing the B&B.
But I fully expect for you to once again change your story to quash any questions about this idea. I am also surprised at the large number of posters in this thread that have lived in or passed through this town of 15k residents.
Why do you even bother making these things up?
by Anonymous | reply 101 | July 10, 2020 10:28 AM |
Not making it up. Not falling on “hard times.” Life is great right now. We won’t need to buy house to run as B&B. It’ll already be bought. But that’s down the road. Not thinking about that now. We’ve sublet our place in NYC for 2 years. We’ll re-evaluate in 2022.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | July 11, 2020 12:42 AM |
And wasn’t our only option. Our life in NYC is very affordable. He’s lived here 40 years and I’ve been here 25 years. We’re not moving because we can’t afford NYC or dislike NYC.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | July 11, 2020 12:45 AM |
So your brother moved up in house size to accommodate the two of you and you are still considering backing out in two years. Everybody knows that real estate is not worth buying if you have to unload it in less than 5 years. That's class man.
It gets rosier and rosier in here with all the bullshit you have been throwing around. I don't think I will bother to read the latest version when you come up with it.

by Anonymous | reply 105 | July 11, 2020 9:03 PM |
R104- everyone is on the same page. And we’re not unloading it 5 years. And NYC re-evaluate is that our apt is rent controlled so you can’t sublet longer than 2 years. We then have to decide whether to give up our nyc place for good.
R105- thanks! It’s my husband who is a vocal coach (voice over, not singing) and yes, we’ll see if he can do some of it there but that’s not something we’re counting on.

The last three evenings we've played Game of Thrones Catan which is fun. Something I can't do when it's just me and my husband. Our dog loves it here. All the space and the big lawn is good for her. All in all, it's been great. I still don't believe I live here yet. I've spent a lot of time with my brother's family before so nothing feels different. We have new IDs though, new health insurance, car insurance, and we're registered to vote. Very happy. Thanks for asking.

No riot gear needed in Anacortes.

Have you been able to check out any of the trails, yet?

Wow, you'll live so close to the absolutely beautiful San Juan Islands! I visited three years ago. Just one island: San Juan Island. Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor are cute. And then of course nature. We saw a pod of orcas just off the shore at Lime Kiln Point! And they hadn't seen any for ten days. We were so lucky. Kayaking is awesome, too.

We went to Cap Sabre to watch the sunset a couple nights ago. Will definitely visit trails and the islands. Settling in.

Btw- good story. My brother and his wife found a dining room table at Costco that they liked but you had to transport it home by yourself. I went on the Anacortes Community Facebook page and asked people their suggestions on what to do. One woman said her family had a truck and would do it for us! She met us at Costco with her husband (a fireman) and 3 kids and we loaded it into their truck. They drove it home for us. We’re having them over for dinner next week. Oh and my husband and I went to Bob’s Chowder House and then I got a haircut at Gidget’s Barbershop. Marty, my barber there, said “oh I know Bob. He comes in here.” We are loving this everyone knows everybody jibe. And the Fish & Chips at The Cabana is the best I’ve ever had.

I was not kidding about the no anonimity in 6 months, looks like you are settling in nicely! Bob's had the best lemon dressing. My favorite restaurant was A Town Bistro. Their vodka gimlets and hand cut pork chop were amazing.

Hey guys. After a couple months of settling, I’ve found myself a job! It’s 40 minutes away in Sedro-Wooley but I’ll be a full time peer recovery coach at a mental health evaluation and treatment center. I start next week.

I should add that I had my first appointment with my sleep doctor today and he was adorable. He’s straight and married so oh well.

[quote] my husband & I will be moving Anacortes
Were the two of you strong enough to move Anacortes together?
by Anonymous | reply 123 | October 24, 2020 3:07 AM |
I don't think that most of the readers realize that Anacortes is a busy busy place in tourist season (in non Covid times). There is a ferry from Victoria BC that goes back and forth. Then all the traffic going to the Olympic National Park pass through on there way and on the way back. Hurrican Ridge is nearby, so it is not a backwater place at at. I am from Seattle.
