A disturbing new report from the Canadian military paints a picture of severe neglect inside several of Ontario’s long-term care homes struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic, including observations of insect infestations, staffing shortages and patients being underfed and left in soiled diapers.

Nursing homes are like meat-packing plants - nobody wants to admit that the epidemic is raging there, or that the workers are in danger... because those places are staffed by people society doesn't value, and nobody wants to pick up the slack. Nobody wants to take care of their bedridden grandma who needs 24/7 care, nobody wants to kill their own chickens or eat an extra vegetarian meal or two, but dammit if somebody else doesn't keep the burgers coming and change grandma's diapers there will be hell to pay! No "Healthcare Hero" cred for the aides at nursing homes, they aren't visible or professional enough!
But the Hell in those places isn't going to stay there, it's going to spread out and come after the rest of us.

It's terrible, OP, but the cold truth is that most people don't care about the elderly and most people don't want to look after them. The work is degrading and it's a job that most people don't want to do, especially since the pay is so low. Think about it - people are paid just above minimum to change adult diapers, bathe and feed them.
Until our society changes, and that type of work is actually valued, nothing will change. Government oversight alone won't fix this.
