Side note: my dog (a golden retriever) is very well-behaved and even in a dog park makes sure that he knows where I am. But I would never think to let him off-leash in the Rambles or anywhere else in Central Park. There are too many distractions (squirrels, other dogs, bird watchers) for it to be a good situation for either of us. If you want to let your dog run off-leash, there are plenty of dog parks and if your dog is not good with other dogs, just go early in the morning when no one is there.

And kudos to Chris Cooper for acknowledging that the internet is overreacting. So many others would have taken a victory lap.
