The NYT announcement of the first 100,000 AIDS deaths was somewhat different than the one for covid. It appears on page 18 - a below the fold wire story. It took 10 years, not 2 months, for that pandemic to reach this level of death but the position and column inches do tell a story about our society and how it saw the victims.

At least the article refers to the men who died as “gay..” For years, the staid New York Times referred to use that term, but insisted on calling us “homosexual.”
