Riddle Me This: Trump Is Surrounded By Wealthy New Yorkers. Why Do Flyovestanis See Him As One Of Their Own?

At least Andrew Jackson was actually from the frontier states.

But Trump is a wealthy New Yorker whose inner circle--Mnuchin, Barr, Kushner, and Cohen (before the fall)-- are all wealthy Jewish and Catholic New Yorkers,

Why do MAGAts unquestioningly believe that he is one of them and uniquely understands their pain

by Anonymousreply 87May 26, 2020 2:25 PM

Because they are stupid or just contrary and deliberately obtuse just to "own the libs".

by Anonymousreply 1May 23, 2020 9:55 PM

Because he is doing more for their agenda than any president in History. They literary gave him a list of judges, and he unquestionably nominates them. He has filled his administration with them, and his policy and rhetoric reflect their values and beliefs. He genuflects to them daily and only cares that he makes them happy. He is only president for them.

by Anonymousreply 2May 23, 2020 10:07 PM

Because they are dumb as shit and believe one day they to will be fake billionaires apart of that rich circle.

Even though they won't be.

by Anonymousreply 3May 23, 2020 10:09 PM

Because they only associate open racism with their Klan buddies, not City folk.

by Anonymousreply 4May 23, 2020 10:11 PM

But those are their leaders R2

The rank and file MAGAts have no idea which judges Trump appointed or even what judges actually do beyond what they've seen on TV and I suspect most of them think Trump appointed Judge Judy.

by Anonymousreply 5May 23, 2020 10:12 PM

Because they're stupid cunts. He hugs a flag and tells them he's a Christian - as long as he makes them feel good abojt being dumb and bigoted they don't care

by Anonymousreply 6May 23, 2020 10:15 PM

What r1 said. A lot of it is seriously based on right-wingers just loving that Trump makes liberals so mad.

And they like that he speaks like an idiot and says offensive things. It is more relatable to them than someone that sounds educated.

by Anonymousreply 7May 23, 2020 10:18 PM

Because of stupidity

by Anonymousreply 8May 23, 2020 10:27 PM

It's a backlash to those "Ivy League Pricks". Since Trump has never struck anyone as an intellectual he's one of their own. He pushes all the right buttons like immigration. He caters to their fears despite having absolutely no concept of life in the Midwest. I live here and predicted all of this.

by Anonymousreply 9May 23, 2020 10:28 PM

I know of many Republicans who say they dislike Trump as a person, but vote for him because they vote on abortion no matter what. My Republican coworker says she didn’t vote for Trump or Hillary in 2016, but will vote Trump in 2020 because he will likely appoint justices that will overturn Roe v Wade. She says his judicial appointees are the reason she will vote for him.

They want to be him. They see themselves in his crude personality, and they strive to have the same success he (sort of) has. Since they think they are future billionaires too, he is relatable.

by Anonymousreply 12May 23, 2020 10:54 PM

Because he's a White Supremacist.

by Anonymousreply 13May 23, 2020 10:55 PM

[quote] Because they are dumb as shit and believe one day they to will be fake billionaires apart of that rich circle.

Oh, dear x2!

by Anonymousreply 14May 23, 2020 10:57 PM

Because that doesn't matter.

Because what does matter is that he gives them license to to hate blacks, Mexicans, Chinese, snooty Europeans, snooty Democrats, anybody from somewhere else or who looks like something other than white trash looking for a scapegoat. He yells them it's okay to hate and to be hateful; he doesn't ask anything of them beyond a vote and a slow bleed-out, and he encouraged them to peel away any outer coating of politeness and to reveal the ugly you inside

by Anonymousreply 15May 23, 2020 11:00 PM

Maybe because it has been demonstrated with certainty the other party sees them only as deplorables.

by Anonymousreply 16May 23, 2020 11:01 PM

Because he’s always been a white trash idea of a very rich person. Tacky and obnoxious as fuck. And because he eats his steaks well done.

by Anonymousreply 17May 23, 2020 11:02 PM

He cultivated that ‘one of you’ image in his years on The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice. Flyoverstanis felt like he would be their pal irl.

by Anonymousreply 18May 23, 2020 11:07 PM

[quote] Because he’s always been a white trash idea of a very rich person.

Meet Wally Sparks.

Or Thornton Mellon.

by Anonymousreply 20May 23, 2020 11:27 PM

Yes, the fact that he was on TV has something to do with it - his fans think that's impressive all on its own.

But also he was pushing the birther conspiracy and various other racist ideas for which he was condemned by the "elites," and if the elites don't like you, the flyoverstanis will absolutely embrace you.

And as R17 says, he embodies "rich person" for white trash (largely because he's from Queens himself). So there's lots of reasons.

by Anonymousreply 21May 23, 2020 11:28 PM

[quote] It's a backlash to those "Ivy League Pricks".

And yet....

Trump went to UPenn

Mnuchin went to Riverdale and Yale

Jared went to some orthodox yeshiva and Harvard

Barr (Jewish father who converted, Catholic mother) went to Horace Mann and Columbia

Stephen Miller is from Santa Monica and went to Duke

Ivanka went to Chapin, Choate and Penn

by Anonymousreply 22May 23, 2020 11:28 PM

"Why do MAGAts unquestioningly believe that he is one of them and uniquely understands their pain"

Because he IS one of them. He's as crude and boorish as every single one. They like that he's proud to be a slob and not "above" them. Another important point is that entitled rich boy Trump actually BELIEVES he never gets treated fairly, and it translates convincingly. Fred Trump bullied his dumb son Donald, repeatedly and relentlessly probably calling him a dumb fuck, a meathead and a LOSER from childhood on. That's why Donald can never get enough, can never have enough, starts fights with or fires those who don't kneel at his throne.

by Anonymousreply 23May 23, 2020 11:29 PM

Because he speaks at a low IQ level and hates the same people they do.

by Anonymousreply 24May 23, 2020 11:30 PM

[quote] This

R11, your link photo reminds me of the “Heil Hilter” photos from the 1930s/1940s.

And while I did not originally think him as strategically malevolent as Hitler, Trump is proving himself the ever-vindictive psychopath.

With mounting deaths as he lies, spins and tantrums whilst playing golf (and accusing others of minor infractions of his exceedingly gross behaviour [i. e., calling out Obama for golfing with TWO Ebola deaths!]), I wonder if it is not such a stretch that in future years, Trump’s name will be in legion with others like Hitler and Mussolini?

by Anonymousreply 25May 23, 2020 11:32 PM

I 100% get that MAGAts think they will be millionaires one day, think that Trump is what they would be like if they were a millionaire and see him as markedly different than the Hillary-Al Gore "eggheads" who they feel otherwise run things.

What's fascinating is that it's all an act--as noted at R32, Trump and his inner circle are from the same background as all the people his Deplorables hate. Funnier yet, none of them are Protestant--they're all Jewish and Roman Catholic except for Trump himself. (Even Melania is Catholic)

by Anonymousreply 26May 23, 2020 11:37 PM

Trump supporters are racist. He emboldens them to act the way they do. “Some of them are very good people “ he says when referring to neo-nazis. They’re just stupid and racist.

by Anonymousreply 27May 23, 2020 11:41 PM

He validates them and their narrow, limited world view. It must be intoxicating to be finally be so reinforced by a "leader."

I keep desperately hoping he will have a Lonesome Rhodes moment when he thinks a mic is turned off.

[Quote]Actor on Rhodes' show : [Speaking about Senator Fuller] You really sell that stiff as a man among men?

[Quote]Lonesome Rhodes : Those morons out there? Shucks, I could take chicken fertilizer and sell it to them as caviar. I could make them eat dog food and think it was steak. Sure, I got 'em like this... You know what the public's like? A cage of Guinea Pigs. Good Night you stupid idiots. Good Night, you miserable slobs. They're a lot of trained seals. I toss them a dead fish and they'll flap their flippers.

[Quote]Lonesome Rhodes : This whole country's just like my flock of sheep!

[Quote]Marcia Jeffries : Sheep?

[Quote]Lonesome Rhodes : Rednecks, crackers, hillbillies, hausfraus, shut-ins, pea-pickers - everybody that's got to jump when somebody else blows the whistle. They don't know it yet, but they're all gonna be 'Fighters for Fuller'. They're mine! I own 'em! They think like I do. Only they're even more stupid than I am, so I gotta think for 'em. Marcia, you just wait and see. I'm gonna be the power behind the president - and you'll be the power behind me!

Did Trump ever do the sort of campaigning that candidates typically do? Like going to local diners, gathering spots, senior centers, state fairs, etc. and having small conversations with people? Or did he rely solely on rallies and walk-by hand shakes? I don't remember. Has he had anything resembling a conversation with a working class deplorable?

by Anonymousreply 29May 24, 2020 12:48 AM

His bigotry and racism appealed to them. Period. Why are we still pretending that wasn't the case?

There is not a single fucking thing other than that that they could have ever related to with him. He was born into wealth, a NYer, obnoxious, elitist, arrogant, treated working people like shit, sued them to not pay them, hired illegal labor, makes his shit in China, never served the country and in fact would keep his kids out of the will if they served, stole from charity, clearly would rather be among Hollywood celebrities than any military vet.

Again, why are we still playing this game? We know the moment he became the front-runner among the numerous Republicans running. The moment he demonized millions of non-whites and it appealed to his entitled, scumbag mostly-white supporters.

by Anonymousreply 30May 24, 2020 1:04 AM

R22. They don't care about the others much, only Trump. He may be Wharton but he comes across as anything but. He's the asshole they secretly want to be and he keeps his women in line. The women secretly agree. -R9

by Anonymousreply 31May 24, 2020 2:30 AM

R31, he's only Wharton because his drunkard brother knew someone at the school who got him in. I guarantee he was a shit student.

by Anonymousreply 32May 24, 2020 2:47 AM

Everyone talks about Wharton with Trump, but he was an undergrad at Penn. Isn't the Wharton MBA the one that counts??

by Anonymousreply 33May 24, 2020 3:37 AM

Wharton is the name of the business school at Penn

For some reason people with undergrad business degrees will say they went to Wharton rather than Penn R33. Both because of the prestige of the school and (likely) because many people hear "Penn" and think "Penn State"

by Anonymousreply 34May 24, 2020 11:21 AM

R34 well I don’t know if people confuse Penn and Penn State, but yeah that’s the general idea. Penn and Cornell are considered the “bottom Ivies,” but (in MOST cases), a Wharton undergrad business degree brings that up a bit. So if a Penn undergrad also has Wharton under his/her belt (as an undergrad), they’ll be sure to always mention it, hoping that makes them as good as Harvard/Princeton/Yale. Or at least Columbia.

by Anonymousreply 35May 24, 2020 11:43 AM

Murdock, Koch and Zuckerberg are consistently polling them to get a psych profile on the majority of republicans in swing states/districts. They know what makes them tick. It is mainly the social networks, belong to the club that is driving these register voters. They say what is on AM radio. So much of it is conspiracy theories.

by Anonymousreply 36May 24, 2020 11:44 AM

Republicans Billionaires are the ones that organized the anti-abortion/anti health care movement in the US. These billionaires were looking for new voters, so they organized religious nutjobs into the right wing religious movement. They are against modern medicine and climate change. This benefits who, the billionaires. You can real say that the republican party is a Theocracy.

by Anonymousreply 37May 24, 2020 11:51 AM

Just to clarify, the New Yorkers surrounding Trump are also corrupt or con-men. New Yorkers with minds of their own and some integrity do not support Trump.

by Anonymousreply 38May 24, 2020 12:07 PM

Trump offers bread and circuses. Hey, it worked for the Roman Empire...oh wait.

by Anonymousreply 39May 24, 2020 12:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 40May 24, 2020 12:45 PM

At this point, people just chose a side, and are sticking with it, regardless of what reality is.

Some people choose Republican because democrats are the "party of those blacks." If I asked any relative on my moronic father's side why they are republican they truly couldn't name a real reason. "Cuz those democrats are goddamn socialists. Thinking they get stuff for free. Now gimme my goddamn farm bailout."

by Anonymousreply 41May 24, 2020 12:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 42May 24, 2020 1:00 PM

R47, you realize that Is satire?

by Anonymousreply 49May 24, 2020 2:22 PM

Why wouldn’t they support a president who is giving them The dream judiciary, culture, and policies they have worked to attain for decades? It would be illogical for them not to support him.

by Anonymousreply 50May 24, 2020 2:24 PM

He comes off as a complete dumbass and most people can relate to that.

by Anonymousreply 51May 24, 2020 2:30 PM

Ethnicity. The wanted a wasp or wasp adjacent (Trump is German and Scottish ) in the White House and that's what they got. In American society, everyone of northern European descent who has money is (in the deluded minds of many ) unquestionably deserving of it.

by Anonymousreply 52May 24, 2020 2:36 PM

They live in denial. All they care about it is that he’s as racist as they are. Everything else they can justify by twisting it around in their simple, pea-brained minds. He’s rich? “He’s an amazing businessman!” He’s A trust fund kid? “His family earned their wealth and come from a great white European lineage! Just like us!” a New Yorker? “He never fit in with those liberals anyway, but he’s still owning all of them!” He’s a misogynist pig/sex pest? “Ha! Those women were begging to be with a great man like him and now they’re embarrassed!”

Nothing will turn them from him as long as he allows and facilitates their bigotry. He is their cult leader and they will walk off a cliff for him. I wish they would.

by Anonymousreply 53May 24, 2020 2:36 PM

He says the things they want to hear and has been portrayed (in his ghostwritten book, a work of fiction, and on that fucking “reality show”) as the American ideal — a man who made himself wealthy beyond measure because he’s smart and shrewd.

Of course it is all an act, both the things he says and the reality show. He’s lying to the trumpkins to manipulate them, and the show created a fake Trump in much the way Trump’s ghostwriter did, because the real trump is much too embarrassing and not very admirable at all.

by Anonymousreply 54May 24, 2020 2:47 PM

Here's the thing: We've had a "No shoes, no shirt, no service" policy in this country for many years now, and not once has anyone publicly objected to it calling it an infringement of their civil rights. Yet all of a sudden because people are asked to wear a mask to go into a store it becomes a Constitutional issue?

Why?

And here's the kicker: If the occupant in the White House were to have somehow mandated it that everyone wear masks and went on television and said that those without masks were unpatriotic Americans, his supporters would be beating the fucking crap out of anyone who dared to defy that order.

by Anonymousreply 55May 24, 2020 2:54 PM

Trump watched how National Enquirer tried to nail him when he got involved with Marsha Maples. Trump began to realize scandal attracts Flyoverstanis, a large part of what would eventually become his political base. Trump befriended David Pecker (CEO of AMI, NI's parent). In turn, Pecker supported Trump with articles that would further endear Trump to the great unwashed, even to the point of engaging in "catch-and-kill" to suppress Trump's affair with Karen McDougal.

CNN aired a piece on National Enquirer's long history last night, including how Trump used the rag as a platform to project the narrative he wanted.

by Anonymousreply 56May 24, 2020 3:17 PM

"He was born into wealth, a NYer, obnoxious, elitist, arrogant, treated working people like shit"

Deplorables do not read, ANYTHING. They take Trump at face value. He's been promoting how he became a billionaire "all by himself" for over 25 years, and that's all they need to know if they even know that. I've read people here say Trump "had help from his father." Trump was MADE by his father, without his father, "Donald Trump" wouldn't exist.

by Anonymousreply 57May 24, 2020 3:32 PM

He's their Bigot in Chief. He reaffirms and supports their hatred of minorities, gays, trans, etc. etc. That's all they need to follow him like he's the second coming.

by Anonymousreply 58May 24, 2020 3:33 PM

There's already been repeated thread after repeated thread on this OP. Why did you find it necessary to come here and start another? Why? Why OP? Can you give us an intelligent, honest answer? Can you? Why would you come here and post this kind of shit yet AGAIN when there have already been so many prior threads on this EXACT same subject. Do you really think this is that damned interesting that it warrants another entire thread to be started? DO YOU??

Why couldn't you have done a search first OP? That would have been the polite thing to do. What you demonstrated was just plain selfishness. You have shown that you don't think about anybody but yourself. It's all about you and your own satisfaction. Next time before you post, do us all a favor and do a search. We don't need another duplicate thread just because of your laziness.

by Anonymousreply 59May 24, 2020 3:36 PM

Jeez.

by Anonymousreply 60May 24, 2020 3:39 PM

r16 nice re-write of history. What Clinton said was you have a basket of deplorables who are his core not that they are all deplorables.

by Anonymousreply 61May 24, 2020 3:47 PM

Someone in the Trump episode of the Netflix series Dirty Money explained OP's question very well.

He said, "People mistakenly see him as like a Rockefeller or a JP Morgan or something. He's not. He's PT Barnum."

And there's a MAGA born every minute.

Speaking of Dirty Money, in the episode on Kushner one of the poverty-stricken couples who lived in one of Kushner's shithole properties (I think they had a waterfall in their kitchen that wasn't meant to be there) said they voted for Trump and would do again. When asked why, they said, "Because he takes care of business."

by Anonymousreply 62May 24, 2020 3:58 PM

MAGA are pivoting to excuse shitty results and I’m betting “Jews destroyed Trump’s promise” gets played.

by Anonymousreply 63May 24, 2020 4:05 PM

You'd better run, You'd better hide, You'd better lock you house and keep the kids inside, Here come the twentieth century's latest scam, He's a half a boy and half a man

by Anonymousreply 64May 24, 2020 4:20 PM

For all the retarded replies (which I haven't read & know are incorrect) to Op's question "Why do flyovestanis see him as one of their own" here's the reason in one short reply.

HE DOESN'T REFER TO THEM AS FLYOVERSTAN!

God, DL is just as bad as any far right board. Completely dismissive of ANY derivation to it's worldview. LIKE ANNNNY! To be so contemptuous of opinions that even slightly disagree with yours is the definition of closed minded.

Take into consideration just ONE topic: border security.

Do you DLers really believe that ANYONE who just waltzed across the border should be given automatic citizenship with full voting rights & unemployment etc? REALLY? NO COUNTRY DOES THIS...NONE and when people point this out they're called Nazis & white nationalists.

So just on that one topic, Trumpsters don't give a shit if Trump is a rich 1%. or isn't religious, or grabbed some pussy. The reason why they voted for him, is to give the middle finger to people in the preceding paragraph .

by Anonymousreply 65May 24, 2020 4:44 PM

[quote]HE DOESN'T REFER TO THEM AS FLYOVERSTAN!

Neither does any politician, Republican or Democratic, so your statement is incorrect.

[quote]Do you DLers really believe that ANYONE who just waltzed across the border should be given automatic citizenship with full voting rights & unemployment etc?

No Democratic politicians take this view, either. So, apparently, your idea of debate is randomly making up bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 66May 24, 2020 4:47 PM

[quote] Do you DLers really believe that ANYONE who just waltzed across the border should be given automatic citizenship with full voting rights & unemployment etc?

That's an utterly dishonest strawman. You're a reprehensible parody of a human being.

by Anonymousreply 67May 24, 2020 4:48 PM

R67 From Vox, one of the your "go to" rags:

"Every candidate supports a path to citizenship for the people currently living in the United States without papers — not just those who came in as children. Sanders, Harris, and Castro have publicly said they would pursue legislation to provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants currently living the United States in their first 100 days in office"

"Warren’s plan, she admits, “has a lot of Castro” in it. It not only decriminalizes crossing the border without papers but also includes reductions in immigration detention, the elimination of private detention facilities, and protecting schools, medical facilities, and courthouses from immigration enforcement."

This "path" is nothing more than an Imprimatur for automatic citizenship.

Do the math, R67 You're nothing more than a sock puppet that spews far left propaganda.

by Anonymousreply 70May 24, 2020 5:18 PM

It has never been that see him as one of their own. That has never been true. His followers elected him as a reaction to a terrible recession and a wave of antigovernment feelings after the Obama administration basically presided over millions loosing their home and not one person going to jail for Wall Street crimes.

Now a virus shows them what real government inaction is.

Because Trump has #nofilter

People like politicians as much as lawyers - and many are. They come off as inauthentic and overmanaged. Which many are.

Trump can be rich and a yankee and have a lifestyle completely at odds with the working class and rubes (granted ALL NATIONAL POLITICIANS DO btw) but since he “tells it like it is” they go for it.

The Rusiapublicans grew him in a petri dish 20 years ago. The sexy wife, the young toddler son, the TV show, the Birther stuff, the repeated hints at running for POTUS...

They've been grooming the celebrity "rebel outsider" for decades.

Aside from being fat, rude, crude and not very educated... the Deplorables like him because he's the rich kid in high school who suddenly wants to be their friend- years later. They are flushed with pleasure. And maybe some of his good fortune will trickle down to them?

by Anonymousreply 83May 26, 2020 6:50 AM

[quote]“I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it,” he said. “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” - LBJ

The GOP has been doing this for a very, very, very long time. Trump just stopped with the subtly and used a megaphone to do it.

by Anonymousreply 84May 26, 2020 1:49 PM

So true. Nixon’s Southern Strategy used backlash against civil rights, intellectualism, and cultural elites to propel the GOP to its dominant political position for decades.

by Anonymousreply 85May 26, 2020 2:10 PM

The Southern Strategy has turned a huge swath of the Nation red

by Anonymousreply 86May 26, 2020 2:10 PM

And that huge swath still represents fewer people voting red than the blue states, so let's not pretend tumbleweed and land vote.

Again, I will remind people that 12 MILLION more people voted for Democrats than Republicans to the Senate and we still lost the Senate because we have a shitty system that allows large swaths of land with fewer people than one neighborhood in NYC to have way more power than they should.
