Songs that make you feel better when life sucks

Rhythm of the Night by El Debarge and pretty much any 80s song that has a buoyant, infectious beat. I call 80s music 'happy music' because it's so joyful and carefree.

I am the least religious, really anti religious, person one could meet, but I find this song by Sister Gertrude Morgan “I Am the Living Bread” to be so wonderfully celebratory and uplifting. She walked away from her life to become a bride of Christ and was a street minister and folk painter in New Orleans, using music to reach people. Warning, the tambourine was her main instrument!

Three Simon and Garfunkel songs that I can't resist: Mrs. Robinson, Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, and The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy). I always want to sing along.

Much of Natalie Merchant’s work as a solo artist as well as a Manic is quite melancholy, but this song is powerfully uplifting and joyous and perfect in celebration of those on the front lines of the current situation.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 4, 2020 9:35 PM |
That's one of mine as well OP.
Don't so don't you worry about a thing by Stevie Wonder. And does the previous poster suggested almost any song performed by a good black mass choir about perseverance in the face of difficulty. Especially stuff in the Civil Rights era like ain't going to let nobody turn me around. In terms of traditional Gospel tunes it's hard to be a Oh Happy Day, or How I Got Over. Also, just about anything by The Staple Singers.

Fun '90s dance song with a "don't kill yourself" message
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 4, 2020 10:22 PM |
Although I find that a lot of those songs that used to comfort me with their talk of a better day ahead now make me cry because I realize I have ceased to believe that things will ever be good again. I sort of mourn for the time when I did. For example this gospel song which I didn't believe a word of before or after I was listening to it but for 3 minutes or so I nearly did.

🙄
The chick/dude is probably not cheating on you. She/he is probably bored to death at home, social distancing, watching Netflix, online window shopping, and posting on DaddyLounge (LOL), just like you!
JFC. What a paranoid and weird song.
R6, I LOVE Sister Gertrude! I’ve been listening to her since True Blood.

Not exactly a song but Paul Oakenfold's 1999 DJ set from Gatecrasher. A classic. For like two years this was my background music while lifting weights.

R54 Donny did alright by that song. Another good cover was by Sixpence None the Richer. I don't know if this link will work, but here's a site that lists all the covers of Don't Dream It's Over. I haven't heard Miley Cyrus' version yet...

by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 5, 2020 12:25 PM |
R90 I miss the time when commercials could tell little life stories with great music and visuals. I’m surprised Mad Men didn’t use that as Draper’s end achievement, but I guess Sing was a bigger hit and Coke a national product. It would have tied back nicely to the whole Carousel slide projectors campaign though.

And I’m Doing Fine Now by New York City.
I have listened to this one after relationship breakups, friendship breakups, and losing loved ones (people and animal alike) to death.
I realize it’s more of a breakup song, but the “I’m doing fine now, without you...” line fits for other instances too for me. Very catchy.

In the early 90s the song Pure by the Lighting Seeds somehow crept into my cynical life and embedded itself. I don’t recall even having a CD of it, but being happy when ever it came on. Still quite joyous and infectious and kind of a last gasp of BrIt New Wave, which I loved. Seeing Bird House in My Soul jolted this memory.

When I start to get anxious, I try to adopt this approach to life.
"I stood there shivering in my pajamas and watched the whole neighborhood line up for curbside taco pickup
And when it was all over I said to myself, is that all there is to a pandemic?"

The song that makes me happiest is an oldie "More Today Than Yesterday" by a one-hit wonder "The Spiral Staircase".
Also, an obscure Elton John album track, "Hercules" which is fun personified.
