It cheers me up in these troubled times. I was a kid in the 80s so for me it was a more innocent decade. What are your favorites?

I'm gay so it was the worst, least innocent of decades. ANY other era was better.
& pop music was cheap sounding

‘Cruel Summer’ is a completely accurate way to describe my memory of that time. Things got better for me in ‘85. I met my partner that August and we rode out the 80s, 90s...the crisis, together. It’ll be 35 years in August.

I was in middle school in the 80s, but the music still makes me so happy. George Michael, Whitney Houston, David Bowie...it was a crappy time in my life but the upbeat music still makes me want to dance.

Wow thanks R9 - really captures how totally fantastic pop music was in the 80s!!

A gloom and doom break is healthy. Don’t be pissy, R13.

R4 The 1980s had it's fair share of good to great music but it was by no means the best era for popular music. That was the mid 1960s - about 1980. The bets acts of the 1980s were arguably The Smiths, and REM.

If you haven’t seen Sing Street and want a fun visit to the 80s it’s def a good one to watch!

And yes, I know that’s not a song from the 80s. ^^
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 15, 2020 9:56 PM |
I didn’t fully appreciate the 80s culture until it was gone. I remember feeling it slipping away starting in 1989. George HW Bush stole my 80s.

I’m going to have to come back to this thread. You guys always have great music suggestions. I’m just not having a good day, and these songs are making me miss a time when life was happier for me. The 80s definitely had their problems, but they were much better than this bleak dystopian mess.
Yeah, I know, MARY...

*hugs* to R25. It was a totally different time, wasn’t it? It seems a lifetime ago for me....

I first heard, and saw the video of, Bananarama’s Love in the First Degree at the local bathhouse I frequented.

R18 I was OBSESSED with The Ocean Blue and that album!!!!!! Such lush, innocent, sweeping, melodic moods. Roadtripped with my drama club besties to pilgrimage to see them open up for The Mighty Lemondrops when I was 15. Amazing times. They were so young, practically teenagers, upon reflection. Adorable boys.
There's no good reason for things to have turned to such shit in every dimension of life and music like they are now. I guess capitalism and greed killed everyone's joy buzz.

I was in pre-elementary and 1st grade when this song was popular!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 16, 2020 7:05 AM |
I find myself enjoying more obscure 80s songs, and that’s why I love these threads. Songs that were popular in one country are virtually unknown in others, so you discover some good tracks here.
Many of the more popular songs from the 80s were so overplayed back then I can’t stand them when I hear them on 80s radio, while others I didn’t care for back then I’ve learned to appreciate.
This is one of them, although I’ve always loved The Pretenders.

Gosh I loved the 80's. It was an incredible time to slowly exit the closet for a young gayling like myself.

This song from 1981 made me fall in love with John Humphreys from Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark. The melody is still haunting and beautiful, and reminds me of the teen I was then.

The album Two Wheels Good by Prefab Sprout is an album I still listen to. Such a gorgeous collection of songs.

R71 I saw Curiosity Killed the Cat ages ago at The Cat Club (I think that was the name at that time) and had a huge crush on the lead singer for weeks after.
