Trump’s Having A Pity Party on Twitter

Does he mean ‘Nobel Prize’?

Pretty sure journalists get Pulitzer prizes, not ‘Noble Prizes.’

by Anonymousreply 304May 24, 2020 3:20 PM

Wow, it appears you're right. He's confused the Pulitzer Prize with the Nobel Prize... and predictably, he's mispelled "Nobel."

by Anonymousreply 1April 26, 2020 7:25 PM

Is one of the requirements for winning a Nobel Prize the ability to spell "Nobel" correctly?

by Anonymousreply 2April 26, 2020 7:25 PM

“It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt”

by Anonymousreply 3April 26, 2020 7:25 PM

Oh he was just being sarcastic. You people don't get his intellect.

by Anonymousreply 4April 26, 2020 7:27 PM

Who's a gaffe master, then?

Stupider and stupider. Day after day after bloody day. In every way. Stupider and stupider. Just when you think his jar of stupid has to be empty. But no. It will never end will it.

by Anonymousreply 6April 26, 2020 7:31 PM

So do we think he actually meant he was "angrily" eating hamburgers and drinking Diet Coke or did he mean to type "actually" or even "hungrily"

#DoctorFreud

by Anonymousreply 7April 26, 2020 7:33 PM

He was being sarcastic!!!

by Anonymousreply 8April 26, 2020 7:33 PM

WTF is he blathering on about anyway?

by Anonymousreply 9April 26, 2020 7:35 PM

He's mad about an article in the New York Times, which says he does nothing but watch tv and eat crappy food all day and night.

by Anonymousreply 10April 26, 2020 7:44 PM

The madman can't take all the pressure of his crimes combined with COVID-19 and his incompetence.

He's cracking. The Tertiary Stage Syphillitic Dementia is taking over.

5150 time?

by Anonymousreply 11April 26, 2020 7:44 PM

He is still pissed that he wasn't awarded a Nobel Peace Prize like Obama was, he has "Noble" prize on the mind and they will never give him one now that he misspelled Nobel.

by Anonymousreply 12April 26, 2020 7:45 PM

I dont even have the bandwidth to be appalled by this guy anymore and his insanity was never funny, especially now that thousands of people have died. I just want this crook, his family and his clown car of an administration to GO AWAY forever. At this point, I'm more angry af the people who voted him into office and the Republicans who've kept him there than I am at his loony behind.

by Anonymousreply 15April 26, 2020 7:52 PM

He won't be winning any spelling bees, that's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 16April 26, 2020 7:55 PM

When he opens his mouth, verbal diarrhea comes out.

by Anonymousreply 17April 26, 2020 8:13 PM

I clicked R5 & it was something completely different from Trump gaffes.

by Anonymousreply 18April 26, 2020 8:28 PM

What a dumble.

by Anonymousreply 19April 26, 2020 8:34 PM

Does he ever do any fucking work at all???

by Anonymousreply 20April 26, 2020 8:35 PM

Republicans and Berners have to edit Biden's speeches for him to sound half as bad as Trump sounds and looks, every damn day.

They have to manufacture a sexual assault from decades ago, when Trump has nearly fifty of them.

That's fucking insane and hateful.

by Anonymousreply 21April 26, 2020 8:37 PM

Trump is distracting people from truly heinous things going on. Watch for election chicanery.

by Anonymousreply 22April 26, 2020 8:42 PM

More whinging. He’s really chapped about that NYT article at R14.

(um... haven’t left the WH “in many months”? you had a fucking rally in in some red state town last month, moron.)

by Anonymousreply 25April 26, 2020 8:54 PM

[quote] Does he ever do any fucking work at all???

Nope. He never has, either. Other people do his work for him, clean up after him, eat his shit He makes personal appearances. As far as he’s concerned that’s his job. Ignorant people have believed Trump is a genuine business mogul for. years. They don’t read. They never read any articles about his bankruptcies, his debt, his lawsuits, his on-site chicanery when he built Trump Tower, his mob ties, his brands that went out of business, or the way he took down the AFL. Younger people especially don’t know these things. They weren’t around when these things happened it were too young to understand them. TV has been polishing Trumps Apple on The Apprentice for years. And what do you think he did on that show? There’s no script. It’s just short takes.

“Mr Trump, now we will film you looking at that guy in the blue shirt on the other side of the table & you will say ‘This is a big project,’ ok?”

Trump got treated like the big shot. People saw his private jet, his golf courses, hotels with his name on them. Rappers wrote lyrics about how great it would be to live Trump’s life with hot bitches & gold toilets. People believed what the media showed them on prime time tv but they don’t READ about him. They just SEE things.

He hired accountants and they did his work. They kept away from him. A few very loyal people have stayed with him for years because he buttered their bread. They got to fly in private jets, stay in hotels all over the world, stay at golf resorts, get his sloppy seconds.

He’s the Wizard of Oz. A phony. A scared little man. He gets others to do it all for him.

by Anonymousreply 26April 26, 2020 8:54 PM

R23 At least he spelled ‘hamburger’ right this time..

by Anonymousreply 27April 26, 2020 8:56 PM

Finally it’s happening. He’s melting under pressure. He cannot hide the fact he is an idiot an empty shell who has no qualities to lead the country in difficult times. Everything gets into his nerves especially NYT WaPo CNN MSNBC and he attacks back showing his stupidity. I don’t think he can handle elections. I hope he can’t.

by Anonymousreply 28April 26, 2020 9:00 PM

I’m surprised there hasn’t been an angry tweet about ‘that LOSER Brad Pitt on the failing low-ratings SNL’ yet. It’s been trending on Twitter all day.

by Anonymousreply 29April 26, 2020 9:00 PM

It's so amazing that not only can he not spell 'Nobel" correctly, but that he somehow thinks Nobel Prizes are given out regularly for journalism.

by Anonymousreply 30April 26, 2020 9:03 PM

More astounding idiocy from a man who has no idea how ignorant he is- a political party has gone down the drain- I might add before Trump became President .

by Anonymousreply 31April 26, 2020 9:04 PM

A Trump pity party? Must be a day that ends in -y.

by Anonymousreply 32April 26, 2020 9:04 PM

His fans think he did it on purpose to troll the media. Lol. I hope this is true otherwise he is getting more stupid every day and we don't want that. He's still the president and in charge of our government and people's life during this pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 33April 26, 2020 9:04 PM

r29, probably because Brad Pitt is a beloved actor and he knows people would side with Brad over him.

by Anonymousreply 34April 26, 2020 9:05 PM

^What?

Also:

[Quote]‘that LOSER Brad Pitt on the failing low-ratings SNL’

Brad Pitt is not a loser, remember, [italic]"he's a little wise guy".

by Anonymousreply 35April 26, 2020 9:12 PM

[quote]he somehow thinks Nobel Prizes are given out regularly for journalism.

And that “injecting disinfectants” into the body is an absolutely brilliant idea that should be studied (he knows more about EVERYTHING than ANYBODY, you know.)

by Anonymousreply 36April 26, 2020 9:16 PM

Well clearly the Noble Committee is just a bunch of losers!

by Anonymousreply 37April 26, 2020 9:18 PM

Now he is attacking Fox! He's off the rails today!

[quote] @FoxNews just doesn’t get what’s happening! They are being fed Democrat talking points, and they play them without hesitation or research. They forgot that Fake News @CNN & MSDNC wouldn’t let @FoxNews participate, even a little bit, in the poor ratings Democrat Debates.....

[quote] ....Even the Radical Left Do Nothing Democrats laughed at the Fox suggestion. No respect for the people running @FoxNews. But Fox keeps on plugging to try and become politically correct. They put RINO Paul Ryan on their Board. They hire “debate questions to Crooked Hillary”....

[quote] ....fraud @donnabrazile (and others who are even worse). Chris Wallace is nastier to Republicans than even Deface the Nation or Sleepy Eyes. The people who are watching @FoxNews, in record numbers (thank you President Trump), are angry. They want an alternative now. So do I!

by Anonymousreply 38April 26, 2020 9:24 PM

If Jack Dorsey had the balls to ban him from Twitter, it would all be over in a heartbeat.

by Anonymousreply 39April 26, 2020 9:28 PM

Fake thread! Nowhere did I write "Noble." Didn't happen. Didn't happen, okay? Show me where I wrote "Noble." You can't. Didn't happen. Lots of nasty lying fakes in this thread. Nasty. Show me where I wrote "Noble." Show me. It's not there, okay? Not there. No one tweets more eloquaint than me. No one. People come to me with tears in their eyes. Out of their eyes. Big tears. Wet tears. Crying like little bitches, okay? And they say to me. They say, "Mr. President, sir, please teach us how to tweet as eloquaint as you, sir. Please, Mr. President. Sir, your eloquaintce and words are the best the world has ever seen, sir. Mr. President, sir, please teach us, sir." Okay? That's what they all say. Okay? Didn't write "Noble." Didn't happen. Show me where. Show me.

[quote]...to the REAL REPORTERS & JOURNALISTS who got it right. I can give the Committee a very comprehensive list. When will the Noble Committee DEMAND the Prizes back, especially since they were gotten under fraud? The reporters and Lamestream Media knew the truth all along....

[quote]...Lawsuits should be brought against all, including the Fake News Organizations, to rectify this terrible injustice. For all of the great lawyers out there, do we have any takers? When will the Noble Committee Act? Better be fast!

by Anonymousreply 40April 26, 2020 9:29 PM

Hey, liberal losers! Trump was just being sarcastic! He was only pretending not to know how to spell Nobel!

by Anonymousreply 41April 26, 2020 9:36 PM

R38 Yeah, he’s holed up in the WH binge watching TV and feeling sorry for himself. He hasn’t been on a golf course or to one of his resorts in weeks and everybody’s picking on him!

by Anonymousreply 47April 26, 2020 10:42 PM

[quote] Yeah, he’s holed up in the WH binge watching TV

"Binge watching" to me suggests watching multiple episodes of the same recorded show. I thought Trump just watched the news all the time (to see how they talk about him). Or are you telling me he's watching episode after episode of "Riverdale" in a row?

by Anonymousreply 48April 26, 2020 10:45 PM

[quote]Does anybody get the meaning of what a so-called Noble (not Nobel) Prize is, especially as it pertains to Reporters and Journalists? Noble is defined as, “having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideals.” Does sarcasm ever work?

Everyone’s heard of the Noble Prize for journalism, right?

by Anonymousreply 50April 26, 2020 11:07 PM

Wow R49, the death toll is at 55,000?!?!! The last time I watched the news it was around 40,000. I stopped watching the news (and Trumps inane press briefings) a few weeks ago 'cause it was making me too anxious.

by Anonymousreply 51April 26, 2020 11:17 PM

Where I am, we’re having peaks & troughs, but overall the peaks and troughs are on a descending scale.

We had the Big Peak, the cases went down every day. But then they suddenly shot up in a spike. But the spike was smaller than the Big Peak. Then the cases went down even further than it had after the first peak. Then they shot up again, but that spike was shorter than the second spike.

So we’re on an overall downward trend, even when cases suddenly spike up.

by Anonymousreply 52April 26, 2020 11:25 PM

...and we will surpass 1,000,000 confirmed cases early this week. That 1 in 320 of us.

[quote]White House staffers said the president works around the clock and can make five dozen work-related calls a day during the pandemic.

[quote]“I can tell you that the biggest concern I have as a new chief of staff is making sure he gets some time to get a quick bite to eat,” White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told The Post.

Trump’s humor keeps going over the heads of his detractors.

by Anonymousreply 59April 26, 2020 11:39 PM

Now he's just going to explain away every stupid thing he says by claiming he was trying to be sarcastic.

Maybe he'll claim that the pussygrabber tape was a hilarious piece of performance art, and we were all just too stupid to get it

by Anonymousreply 60April 26, 2020 11:44 PM

It might work with its intended target

It's doubtful most MAGATs have heard of the Nobel Prize. ("Prolly sumthin fer libtards, Bubba!")

by Anonymousreply 61April 26, 2020 11:50 PM

R45, I don't think the committee has a category for "rancid, parasitic, propagandist whore"

by Anonymousreply 62April 26, 2020 11:56 PM

So, now he's actually trying to convince people that he meant to say "Noble" as in using the adjective "noble"? Nice try, donnie.

by Anonymousreply 67April 27, 2020 12:04 AM

R67, I've said that numerous times. He's literally an orange ball of every, vile, characteristic a person could have.

You'd think even a charity would be the one thing considered holy territory, but not only did he steal from it, but stole to buy a giant fucking painting of HIMSELF.

Not only did he never serve and shits on those who have served (and if you're in the military and worship him, you're a fucking idiot), but he actually thinks so little of serving that he put *IN HIS WILL* that if his child serves, they're cut-off - and that goes for the peace corps, too.

Oh, and r59? Trump doesn't have a sense of humor. He has never had a sense of humor. He never will have a sense of humor. And he's simply not intelligent enough or self-aware enough to understand sarcasm.

by Anonymousreply 73April 27, 2020 12:42 AM

by Anonymousreply 84April 27, 2020 7:29 AM

I'm sure these assholes would've found Obama being "sarcastic" over "BENGHAZZZI!!!!1!" -where only four people died- just as worthy of defense as sarcasm over almost 14000x that number dying from this.

Trump supporters are cockroaches.

by Anonymousreply 85April 27, 2020 7:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 86April 27, 2020 7:53 AM

R77, that reminds me of my elderly aunt's Facebook post-- she made a post that said "Voting made simple. Straight Republican ticket!" And then she posted the same thing right after that. And again after that, three in a row, the same day, yet hours apart. I think she was drunk. Nobody "liked" it.

Two days later she came back and "liked" the middle of the three identical posts. It just looks so sad

r43 good luck hearing anything bad. Most of them stick to a code of not speaking out negatively about the First Families. It's a pride thing and these jobs are usually for life. They came from a long line of usually black White House staff that had to deal with a lot of shit racists in that place, but each one of them put on a brave face and kept quiet. Old WH staff are still looked in on by the current staff and teach them how to maintain the standards set by their predecessors. OI read a book about them and it was fascinating.

The WH non-political staff take their jobs very seriously and wouldn't bad mouth the Trumps any more than than the other families. I have a feeling that people are generally nice to those that willing clean up their home and serve them food. Trump might be an exception, but out of respect for the office and the history of their position, most of the staff won't say shit. Not negating any leaks, but a new documentary will just show a lot of smiling faces and people pivoting to anecdotes about the Obamas or Bushs with a picture of one of them delivering Trump a Diet Coke without a direct story about that fool.

Is there a press briefing today? Just saw on CNN a briefing was cancelled, but now rescheduled. He must be even more unhinged after all the ranting this weekend.

by Anonymousreply 106April 27, 2020 6:48 PM

They probably scheduled one to "prove" that he hasn't lost his mind completely. He will be given a script with the advice to follow it tightly and he will promptly ignore everyone because he knows better.

The WH also tried to get CNN out of their front row seat and move them to the back of the room. Why not just ban all reporters and only have Chanel Rion ask questions?

Blame the Democrats for any “lateness” in your Enhanced Unemployment Insurance. I wanted the money to be paid directly, they insisted it be paid by states for distribution. I told them this would happen, especially with many states which have old computers.

There has never been, in the history of our Country, a more vicious or hostile Lamestream Media than there is right now, even in the midst of a National Emergency, the Invisible Enemy!

FAKE NEWS, THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!

Why should the people and taxpayers of America be bailing out poorly run states (like Illinois, as example) and cities, in all cases Democrat run and managed, when most of the other states are not looking for bailout help? I am open to discussing anything, but just asking?

That's what dummies thought when Dumb Dubya Bush lost the Congress and left the White House.

Republicans only got WORSE after that! There is no education, honesty or accountability among most Republican voters. They believe whatever they want to and whatever party loyalists pay to make them believe — even if those party loyalists are foreign dictators and mafiarchs hell-bent on destroying democracy and American power.

There is absolute moral and intellectual decay in the right wing. Total corruption from the White House, to Trump's criminal accomplices in Congress, to the deeply dishonest, toothless inbred base that believes whatever they're told to believe from a Republican or whatever serves them. They have devolved into third-world dictator's gang.

We should stop calling them Republicans and start calling them the Republican Guard.

The moral decadence and ignorance of dumbfuck rednecks is only going to get worse as educational amenities decrease, corruption over the law increases and moneyed voices like Fox News, right-wing superPACS and foreign disinformation campaigns on social media drown out legitimate journalism. There's a Conservative Bubble they dwell in now and they don't care what reality has to say.

There is hope that the Republicans will lose their socially conservative, religious base when the Baby Boomers die, because younger generations don't take religion as seriously.

But I think most of this country is in a trap of rigged elections (Electoral College, gerrymandering, voter suppression), partisan federal judges, corrupt candidates, plutocratic propaganda and wimpy liberals that we can never recover from.

Republicans are just going to keep nominating Deplorables proudly, no matter how many disasters like Iraq, Katrina, Great Recessions, climate turmoil and COVID-19 they worsen.

It's either Fake News or somebody else's fault.

Deplorable presidents will creep back, over and over, like a bad slasher villain, until the courts, the rich and the corrupt congresssmen outlaw genuine opposition altogether and we become a Banana Republic husk of our 20th century self with no real democracy and economic superiority in Chinese hands.

America is over. You can lead a horse to water, but the horse enjoys lying, denying and self-deluding.

Why does anyone with a modem watch cable news these days? It’s a bad hangover from the 90s. Cut the cord, people. There are tons of websites to get news from.

NPR, BBC, PBS, WaPo, Politico. If you want a left slant there are politically oriented websites like Media Matters, Wonkette, Mother Jones, Daily Beast, the Atlantic, NY Mag, the New Yorker, ThinkProgress, Buzzfeed, Slate, TPM

Shut off the cable news.

Fact check: Trump litters his weekend tweetstorm with bizarre false claims

By Daniel Dale, CNN

Updated 5:04 PM ET, Mon April 27, 2020

Washington (CNN)After walking out of Friday's coronavirus briefing without taking questions, President Donald Trump embarked on one of his more noteworthy weekend tweetstorms.

It went like his tweetstorms usually do.

There was self-pity and self-aggrandizement. There were grievances and attacks. And, as is the case so often, there was outlandish dishonesty.

Trump tweeted and retweeted more than 35 times apiece on Saturday and Sunday -- including six deleted tweets recorded by Trump-tracking website Factba.se. His messages were littered with false claims, some of them downright bizarre. Here are fact-checks of the lowlights:

His question to Dr. Deborah Birx Trump blasted the media for (correctly) reporting that he had spoken to and asked questions of Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, at the Thursday coronavirus briefing during which he wondered aloud whether UV rays and disinfectant injections could be used as treatments for the virus.

"Was just informed that the Fake News from the Thursday White House Press Conference had me speaking & asking questions of Dr. Deborah Birx. Wrong, I was speaking to our Laboratory expert, not Deborah, about sunlight etc. & the CoronaVirus. The Lamestream Media is corrupt & sick!" he wrote on Twitter.

Facts First: Trump did speak to and ask questions of Birx. In fact, he addressed her by name, "Deborah," when he asked a question about the use of light (and heat) to treat the virus.

Here's how the official White House transcript records that exchange:

"THE PRESIDENT: Deborah, have you ever heard of that? The heat and the light, relative to certain viruses, yes, but relative to this virus?

DR. BIRX: Not as a treatment. I mean, certainly fever — THE PRESIDENT: Yeah.

DR. BIRX: — is a good thing. When you have a fever, it helps your body respond. But not as — I've not seen heat or (inaudible).

THE PRESIDENT: I think it's a great thing to look at. I mean, you know. Okay?" Trump might perhaps have meant that he was addressing Department of Homeland Security science official Bill Bryan, not Birx, during the section of the briefing when he spoke specifically about the possible use of disinfectant. (At that other moment, he was looking in the direction of both Bryan and Birx at the side of the room.) But that's not what he said in the tweet.

When he has left the White House

Defending his work habits after a New York Times article last week painted him as late-arriving and television-obsessed, Trump tweeted: "I work from early in the morning until late at night, haven't left the White House in many months (except to launch Hospital Ship Comfort) in order to take care of Trade Deals, Military Rebuilding etc..."

Facts First: It's not true that Trump hasn't left the White House in "many months" other than his March 28 trip to Virginia to see off the Comfort hospital ship. He left multiple times just last month. Trump held a campaign rally in North Carolina on March 2. He went to Pennsylvania on March 5 for a Fox News town hall. On March 6, he visited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta and toured tornado damage in Tennessee. He then spent the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago club and residence in Florida, flying to Orlando for a private fundraiser on March 9. He visited the Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Washington on March 19.

In February, Trump held five rallies, played golf and made a trip to India, among other travels outside the White House.

by Anonymousreply 151April 28, 2020 12:27 AM

A laughable claim of "sarcasm"

Over three tweets, Trump repeated his familiar complaint about how reporters were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the Trump-Russia story -- except, instead of the Pulitzer, Trump four times used the word "Noble," apparently misspelling "Nobel."

After he was roundly mocked for both the spelling error and the prize mix-up, Trump deleted the tweets. But he also offered a ridiculous explanation: he had intentionally used "Noble," as "sarcasm." "Does anybody get the meaning of what a so-called Noble (not Nobel) Prize is, especially as it pertains to Reporters and Journalists? Noble is defined as, 'having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideals.' Does sarcasm ever work?"

Facts First: Like his Friday lie that he was being "sarcastic" when he mused about people injecting disinfectant, this is obvious nonsense. There was no indication he was being sarcastic in the tweets about the "Noble."

Here is what the three now-deleted tweets said:

"When will all of the 'reporters' who have received Noble Prizes for their work on Russia, Russia, Russia, only to have been proven totally wrong (and, in fact, it was the other side who committed the crimes), be turning back their cherished 'Nobles' so that they can be given...to the REAL REPORTERS & JOURNALISTS who got it right. I can give the Committee a very comprehensive list. When will the Noble Committee DEMAND the Prizes back, especially since they were gotten under fraud? The reporters and Lamestream Media knew the truth all along ...Lawsuits should be brought against all, including the Fake News Organizations, to rectify this terrible injustice. For all of the great lawyers out there, do we have any takers? When will the Noble Committee Act? Better be fast!"

A baseless conspiracy theory

Trump retweeted a baseless coronavirus conspiracy theory from pro-Trump pundit John Cardillo. Cardillo alleged that people had tried to oust Trump through illegitimate means before the pandemic, then added: "Do you really think these lunatics wouldn't inflate the mortality rates by underreporting the infection rates in an attempt to steal the election?"

Facts First: There is no basis for the suggestion that Trump opponents are inflating the coronavirus mortality rate to try to "steal the election." While the precise mortality rate is challenging to identify, there is no evidence that health authorities are manipulating any figures to damage the President. Further, Trump opponents and independent experts have consistently called for a dramatic expansion of coronavirus testing -- which would likely result in a lower, not higher, ratio of people dying to people known to be infected.

There is subjectivity involved in official death totals. Official counts in New York and some other states now include "probable" deaths of people who had not been tested but whose deaths were thought likely by doctors, coroners or medical examiners to have been from the virus. But even with the addition of "probable" deaths, there is a broad expert consensus that the official figures are undercounting, not overcounting, the true number of deaths.

Trump critics have been vocal in their calls for more people to be tested. Testing people with milder symptoms or no symptoms would reduce, not inflate, the ratio of people dying to the total infected population.

by Anonymousreply 152April 28, 2020 12:29 AM

The Household staff will talk, R103:

I don’t know what kind of disinfectant Donald Trump has been injecting, but the man does not appear to be well. The president’s lethal medical musing has turned him into (even more of) a global laughing stock and the widespread ridicule has clearly bruised his fragile ego. While Trump has never been a paradigm of calmness or competence, he has become increasingly irate and erratic in recent days. Now even his diehard supporters seem to be cooling towards him. Is the “very stable genius” starting to unravel?

Let’s start with the president’s weekend tweetstorm, which, even by Trumpian standards, was spectacularly unhinged. On Sunday, Trump lashed out at what he called a “phony story” in the New York Times that claimed he spends his days eating junk food and watching TV. “I will often be in the Oval Office late into the night & read & see [in the Times] that I am angrily eating a hamberger & Diet Coke in my bedroom,” he tweeted. “People with me are always stunned.” He then deleted the tweet and replaced it with one in which hamburger was spelled correctly. (This was clearly a challenge for him: he has previously misspelled hamburgers “hamberders”.)

It turned out that the hambergers were just an appetiser. A rant about the “Noble” prize, which Trump seems to have confused with the Pulitzer prize, followed. This was subsequently deleted and replaced with a tweet stating it had all been an exercise in sarcasm. He is a master of sarcasm, as we all know.

Trump erupts at campaign manager as reelection stress overflows

By Jeremy Diamond, CNN

Updated 6:32 PM ET, Wed April 29, 2020

(CNN)As he huddled with advisers on Friday evening, President Donald Trump was still fuming over his sliding poll numbers and the onslaught of criticism he was facing for suggesting a day earlier that ingesting disinfectant might prove effective against coronavirus.

Within moments, the President was shouting -- not at the aides in the room, but into the phone -- at his campaign manager Brad Parscale, three people familiar with the matter told CNN. Shifting the blame away from himself, Trump berated Parscale for a recent spate of damaging poll numbers, even at one point threatening to sue Parscale. It's not clear how serious the President's threat of a lawsuit was.

The White House did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment and the Trump campaign declined to comment.

Faced with an increasingly uphill battle for reelection and aides trying to steer him in new, sometimes conflicting directions, Trump has grown increasingly unnerved in the last week about his reelection prospects. Lashing out at Parscale was just the most recent manifestation of that anxiety.

"He's p*ssed because he knows he messed up in those briefings," one Republican close to the White House said of Trump lashing out.

Last Wednesday, two days before Trump lashed out at Parscale, his campaign manager and several other top political advisers briefed him on internal campaign and Republican National Committee data showing the President was heading for defeat in key battleground states. Parscale, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and other advisers urged him to scale back his daily, combative news conferences and pointed to data showing that the briefings were hurting him with critical swing voters in those states.

Trump has complained to aides that his restricted travel has hurt his numbers, not the briefings.

One person familiar with the call said the message didn't appear to sink in with the President, who instead changed the subject away from the issue of briefings.

But the next day, Trump's outlandish comments about disinfectant only amplified those advisers' urgings. Even as he erupted at Parscale on Friday evening, during that day's briefing the President took no questions. And the next day he scrapped the briefing altogether.

While Trump has scaled back his news conferences this week and even opted for a less combative tone during a news conference on Monday, aides are unsure whether the new approach will stick. And Trump has still found venues to field questions from reporters and share his views on the day's news, including during lengthy pool sprays in the Oval Office.

Despite the outburst, two sources said Trump and Parscale patched things up later that Friday night. But Parscale, who has been working from his south Florida home for the past month, flew back to Washington on Wednesday to get some face time with his boss.

Two sources familiar with the matter said Parscale spent several hours at the White House on Wednesday where he discussed reelection strategy with Trump and secured his approval for new campaign ads that will knock former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, for his stance on China.

R177, it makes sense that Trump would be upset about his poll numbers. They have been absolutely brutal lately. The National polls are horrible for Trump, and the swing-state polls are only slightly better.

The race will probably tighten up as the year proceeds, but for now these are historically bad numbers for an incumbent President.

by Anonymousreply 210May 3, 2020 12:12 AM

Trump's reelection strategy

-Ensure low turnout

-Prop up big business and Wall Street

-Fuel red state anger

-Destroy Biden

-Nativism

Ensure low turnout: With the majority of the country still in lockdown, many states are trying to ramp up voting by mail to promote voter turnout during the pandemic and help keep voters safe. The President, however, has resisted these efforts. Despite studies that show voter fraud is extremely rare, Trump called voting by mail "corrupt" and said it is "very dangerous for this country because of cheaters." Republicans understand that low turnout has historically benefited their party. There is a long-documented history of Republicans pursuing measures that discourage voter participation. These tactics often affect low-income and marginalized people — groups that tend to vote Democratic. Given the way this virus has hit Democratic electorates particularly hard, the lack of mail-in voting could tip the election in Trump's favor.

Prop up big business and Wall Street: The President will do everything in his power to help the financial sector and make sure federal funds are directed toward big business interests. Trump was surely pleased that Wall Street enjoyed its best month in April in 33 years even as the nation faces a looming recession. The $2 trillion economic stimulus bill has come under fire for doling out money to larger businesses rather than doing more to help the imperiled small-business sector. After Congress passed the stimulus bill, Trump moved to gut the oversight mechanisms that would limit his ability to direct the distribution of funds. Trump, who has repeatedly taken credit for the booming economy in the last three years, has always been aware that what's good for big business and high finance is good for his political standing. Over the next few months, it's likely the President will try to keep his high-income supporters happy

Fuel red state anger: President Trump has been using his Twitter feed to incite the anger that is brewing over the Covid-19 economic shutdown. Trump has shown his support for an increasing number of Americans who are understandably frustrated with the lockdown measures that have, in many cases, upended their lives, with the aim of cutting off the contagion that has killed more than 66,000 people across the country. Earlier this month, Trump issued a call to "liberate" Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia. When protesters — some of whom were armed — stormed the Michigan Capitol on Thursday the President tweeted his support for the "very good people" who "want their lives back again, safely!" Trump will promote efforts to restart the economy quickly as a way to address some of the anger mounting, particularly in red states. Rather than using his bully pulpit to ease the entire nation into the safest reopening possible, he will play to the forces of division as a way to energize his support among red state electorates as well as swing state voters. In doing so, Trump is looking to recreate some of the magic from 2016 in places like Michigan — where Joe Biden is in the lead.

by Anonymousreply 211May 3, 2020 10:31 AM

Destroy Biden: With former Senate aide Tara Reade coming forward with allegations of sexual assault against Joe Biden, the President is licking his chops. It has never been a secret that President Trump plans to destroy Biden's reputation. This was the motivation at the core of the Ukraine scandal that ultimately kicked off his impeachment, and the playbook he used against Hillary Clinton in 2016. Now the President has another controversy on the table — one that has a number of Democrats calling for further investigation. Unlike the attacks against Hunter Biden, this charge is directly aimed at the former Vice President, and at raising serious concerns about his conduct and character. Biden has adamantly denied the charges and there are many serious questions about Reade's allegations. But unless he can decisively quash the allegation, Republicans will have one more talking point they can use to question whether Biden is a man worthy of holding the Oval Office — even though their own candidate has a long list of sexual assault and harassment accusations against him.

Nativism: Just last week, the President took advantage of the pandemic and announced an immigration ban. "In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!" he tweeted. The move harkened back to his 2016 campaign promise to build a wall along the southern US border. This time, the President's executive order was much more limited in comparison, with a long list of exceptions. Expect more of the same. Trump believes that anti-immigration rhetoric is one of the easiest ways to mobilize supporters around an imagined threat that unites them behind his candidacy, regardless of what he actually does for them. Trump can be the president of Wall Street, in his mind, and still win the support of rural working-class voters if he plays to their cultural rage. His nativist attacks on immigrants have always been the key to his conservative populism. This is the five-point campaign strategy that the President will likely use as he seeks another four years in the White House. His team is hoping that he can defy the odds and follow in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, both of whom won a second term despite Democrats feeling that there was no way the nation would ever accept four more years of, what they believed to be, a total failure of leadership.

Even wackier: talk to anyone in the TV industry in 2020, even pre-Covid, and ratings for linear TV shows is sort of the last thing they focus on.

Linear audiences are assumed (by networks and advertisers) to be older and poorer and not really worth much.

And the hit network shows are most watched on demand or via DVR, not live.

So add "TV ratings" to the long list of Things That Mattered 30 Years Ago" that Trump fixates on.

R252, the majority of voters should be allowed to determine who the president should be. The majority of this country would've prevented a Trump presidency. Only Republicans are desperate to hold onto it because they know they'd lose in an *actual* election.

by Anonymousreply 253May 11, 2020 5:09 AM

Someone, maybe the PollTroll, posted that you would need a 2/3 majority in both houses AND the states I think to get rid of the electoral college and this was nearly impossible to achieve.

by Anonymousreply 254May 11, 2020 8:57 AM

No small state is ever going to give up its share of the Electoral vote.

[quote]the majority of voters should be allowed to determine who the president should be

Then the majority should spread out and not pack themselves into just some of the states.

by Anonymousreply 255May 11, 2020 9:07 AM

Yes and no, R254. If you need to amend the Constitution to formally remove the Electoral College, then yes. But if enough states band together to award their electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote, you can, in effect, remove the electoral college without touching the Constitution.

by Anonymousreply 256May 11, 2020 12:39 PM

The initial intention of the electoral college -as with the second amendment- no longer applies today.

The fact that many red states with no where near the population of blue states and pay no where near what blue states do, get to have so much more control and determine the direction of the country (for the worse) is disgraceful. McConnell took away a Supreme Court pick from a Democratic president. This is what they've been allowed to do because our system is abnormal.

by Anonymousreply 257May 11, 2020 2:44 PM

What would happen if RBG died before November? I bet McConnell would schedule a hearing for the week after her funeral. Corrupt piece of shit needs to be removed from the senate.

Great credit being given for our Coronavirus response, except in the Fake News. They are a disgrace to America!

Dems are trying to steal the Mike Garcia Congressional Race in California. Republicans, get out and VOTE for your terrific candidate, ASAP!

Coronavirus numbers are looking MUCH better, going down almost everywhere. Big progress being made!

OBAMAGATE makes Watergate look small time!

The great people of Pennsylvania want their freedom now, and they are fully aware of what that entails. The Democrats are moving slowly, all over the USA, for political purposes. They would wait until November 3rd if it were up to them. Don’t play politics. Be safe, move quickly!

In most years the Electoral College is not a GOP tool.

If you all recall, up until around 9PM Eastern on Election Night 2016, the conventional wisdom was that the Electoral College was working in Her favor, that the "Blue Wall" of states that were believed to automatically be in the Democrat's column was very close to 270 and pundits were saying that once Florida was called for Her it was all over.

As more states like Texas turn purple and then blue, it will really work in our favor as the GOP will be left with small states like Mississippi and Utah, with minimal electoral college pull

by Anonymousreply 260May 11, 2020 3:01 PM

Trump could spend the rest of his life trying to make up for being a cockroach all of his life and will still never be half the man Obama is.

by Anonymousreply 261May 11, 2020 3:01 PM

I looked at the "obamagate" nonsense. All they're doing is using the hashtag over and over again. Do these people have fucking lives?

As I have said for a long time, dealing with China is a very expensive thing to do. We just made a great Trade Deal, the ink was barely dry, and the World was hit by the Plague from China. 100 Trade Deals wouldn’t make up the difference - and all those innocent lives lost! (So, what does this mean? China is going to welch on the trade deal?)

When the so-called “rich guys” speak negatively about the market, you must always remember that some are betting big against it, and make a lot of money if it goes down. Then they go positive, get big publicity, and make it going up. They get you both ways. Barely legal?

Big Congressional win in California for Mike Garcia, taking back a seat from the Democrats. This is the first time in many years that a California Dem seat has flipped back to a Republican. Also, Tom Tiffany beat his Democrat rival BIG in Wisconsin. Two great Congressional WINS!

The Great State of Wisconsin, home to Tom Tiffany’s big Congressional Victory on Tuesday, was just given another win. Its Democrat Governor was forced by the courts to let the State Open. The people want to get on with their lives. The place is bustling!

I don’t know the so-called Whistleblower Rick Bright, never met him or even heard of him, but to me he is a disgruntled employee, not liked or respected by people I spoke to and who, with his attitude, should no longer be working for our government!

22-O in my endorsements of Congressional Candidates this season. California & Wisconsin won big on Tuesday. Thank you to all of those very brilliant Voters. You will not be disappointed!

If I were a Senator or Congressman, the first person I would call to testify about the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA, by FAR, is former President Obama. He knew EVERYTHING. Do it @LindseyGrahamSC, just do it. No more Mr. Nice Guy. No more talk!

by Anonymousreply 275May 14, 2020 10:30 PM

I doubt it, R275. It's far easier to keep hinting than to actually have any real investigation. I think they still have nightmares about the Benghazi hearings with Clinton, where she destroyed them. And there's even less here than there was about Benghazi.

By never actually investigating, they can keep talking vaguely about a "cloud" over the Obama administration (a "cloud" that includes Biden, of course), and never actually explain just what that cloud is nor how Biden is involved.

Trump insisted that Graham bring Obama in to testify; Graham declined.

by Anonymousreply 276May 14, 2020 11:05 PM

R276 is right.. they’d never do the work. And it would fall apart in front of their faces. Better to just accuse and brainwash their followers.

- You know what the crime is.

Also, good luck with sending Obama a subpoena and actually expecting him to show up. We all remember how members from the Trump administration were all rushing to testify before congress, right. Trump's dumbass lawyer was also just arguing before the SC that a president has absolute immunity.

I dunno... he just might, if only to show that he's got nothing to worry about and to highlight the difference between himself and Trump. I'm still pretty sure they won't ask him, though.

Remember when Congressional Republicans invited him to speak at one of their retreats? This was early in Obama's tenure and Republicans were trying to claim he was an empty suit who could only speak in front of a teleprompter. Well, he destroyed them, absolutely nailed them. I just don't see the appetite there when there is so little advantage to be gained by inviting him.

Ratings through the roof. We're desperate for mature intelligent authority. The ratings alone will incense Trump, the content yet more. Obama will reach out to America in a way Trump hasn't come close to in 3.5 years, and never could. Upstaged by the Nobel Laureate once again. Really can't wait.
