The rarely-used law, which does not apply to lesbians, can result in a jail term of up to two years for those found guilty.
Singapore court upholds colonial-era law that criminalizes sex between men

In case you haven't heard, Singapore, it's not 1950 anymore. Welcome to 2020 - and the 21st Century!
P.S. You're supposed to go forward, not backwards.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 30, 2020 2:56 PM |
God damn Muslim countri....oh wait. It's majority Chinese and multi-religious. And the law is from the 1930s British Empire days. The usual trolls will never show their fat asses in this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 30, 2020 2:59 PM |
THAT is their biggest concern right now?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 30, 2020 2:59 PM |
R3: So, you're on a gay message board, attacking gay rights. Get off this site, asshole.

R4? I don’t think you understood my post.

He didn't

I've been to Singapore about six times, although not in the last 10 years. My same-sex partner and I never had trouble getting a hotel room with a single bed (admittedly, these were high-end accommodations like the Ritz and Four Seasons, although we paid a fraction of what we would in the US for similar hotels).
More interestingly to me was, although I'm just an AWG, I can't ever remember getting cruised more than I did in Singapore. My partner was there on business and I spent a lot of time wandering around alone, and I found myself being checked out on the streets and on trains by lots of cute guys, being flirted with in shops and restaurants and brazenly being followed into men's rooms where guys at the next urinals would shamelessly show off their hard-ons. I thought maybe I was being set up in some sort of police sting so I never, shall we say, took the bait, but the feeling I got was that the whole society is so closeted that cruising 1960's style was the only way to meet guys.

Jail for two years. A slap on the wrist compared to government-mandated murder, social ostracism, flogging and honour murders for gays in Muslim countries.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 30, 2020 3:15 PM |
And lesbians will still claim they have it as hard as gay men

by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 30, 2020 3:32 PM |
I thought they had gay saunas and gay bars. Am I thinking of the right country? I do know that Singapore gays come to Bangkok for PnP weekend binges. Drugs being the issue in Singapore
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 30, 2020 3:48 PM |
Of course, in Christian countries like Uganda, gays get the death penalty. In Russia, although the law pretends it not against homosexuality, in practice it is.
America's religious right took a very active role in forming all those anti-gay laws.

Singapore has done a lot to turn themselves from a corrupt Southeast Asian backwater to a world class economic marvel. However, this is a step back in the wrong direction.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 30, 2020 4:52 PM |
R9 and NO ONE except lesbians think that, gay men don't and straight people, who LOVE lesbians, definitely don't
Too bad, gay men don't come together as a powerful group and actually FIGHT for our rights or move into our own section of the world, fuck all those straights, unlike other minority groups, we're self sufficient and don't need straight people to keep us going, we'd be better off without them and flourish actually

So where is this social conservatism in a modern city state coming from?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 30, 2020 8:40 PM |
R22: Desire for reproduction? Chinese emphasis on familial unit as building block of society? Appreciation of British Imperial law? Only one party has ever won all elections there, and it is a right wing pro-business party.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 30, 2020 9:12 PM |
R22, The levers of power in Singapore are controlled by the Chinese majority who seem to merge Confucianism (which is itself deeply conservative and obsessed with maintaining systems of social cohesion) with starchy Low Church Protestantism.

They’re not, actually R27 - not in S’pore at least. I lived the gay expat life there for three years. What they’re looking for is a place to have sex - expats have their own places whereas single Singaporeans will most likely still be sharing a bedroom with granny in their family’s high rise government housing department flat until they’re 35.
After which the government gives up on them getting married and they can apply for a place in their own.
It’s an interesting society...

Not really R29 - it says lots about my relationship with Singapore that I got away as often as I could to Hong Kong. Plenty of tales to tell from there!
And no, R30 - I’m not particularly desperate for anything right now (except for this beautiful Autumn weather to last forever). And if I was sexually attracted to men from Asia I wouldn’t be such a pig as to refer to them as “Asian cock”. Your mileage may vary.
I suspect that you couldn’t find “Asia” on a map, let alone that you’ve been anywhere out of the fascist country that you’re stuck in.
All the best R30 - you’ll need it.

re: The flag of Singapore
(Pre union with Malaya) The Chinese population wanted five stars, which were modelled off the flag of the People's Republic of China and the Muslim population wanted a crescent moon. Both of these symbols were combined to create the national flag of Singapore
During the second half of the 20th century, the star and crescent symbol came to be recognised as a symbol of Islam, and Singapore's flag came to be seen in this context by the nation's Muslim activists. Singapore and Nepal are the only non-Muslim nations to have a crescent moon in their national flags.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 31, 2020 12:31 PM |
R43, the Chinese outnumbered the indigenous Malays since the 1830s. Race relations between the three main groups--Chinese, Malay, Indian--haven't always been easy, but since the 1960s, every 21 July is Racial Harmony Day, which celebrates Singapore's success as a racially harmonious nation.

If they are, they can always head north across the causeway to Malaysia, where there is a Malay Muslim majority that discriminates against the Chinese minority.
