Can you describe libertarianism in a nutshell? I heard they're basically republicans with a black/gay friend.
A question for the political gays....

Basically, they think that the government should do very little except provide essential services like police and military. This means they are usually against things like drug laws.

"Personal responsibility" and "no taxes" defined perfectly by Rand Paul who went swimming and had lunch with colleagues after his test, then found out he tested positive and gets to have great health insurance on the taxpayers' dime to treat the illness.
Another Libertarian would be professional dirtbag and former MLB racist shithead Curt Schilling who also screams about taxes...bailed out by the taxpayers of RI when his video game company failed.

Government shouldn't build public infrastructure paid for by taxpayers, e.g., roads and sidewalks. They should be privately owned and paid for by user tolls.
There should be no Social Security. People should pay for their own retirements.
There should be no income tax. Import duties, use taxes, and tolls should fund the government and infrastructure.
There should be no FDA, EPA, or USDA to regulate drug quality, environmental regulations, or food laws. People will not buy the goods and services of companies who produce bad products, and they will go out of business. Self-regulation will promote more commerce and better products.

The american character has a strong libertarian streak. It’s unique to the pioneer spirit, unlike commonplace right wing or left wing ideologies. I’d pay more attention to this if I were a political liberal.

What they believe is the antithesis of what they actually do.

Nonsense R7. Americans were unusual in the early nineteenth century for being pragmatic and not ideological. The spread of this ludicrous cult ideology, popular in Europe in anarchist days but NOT in the USA, only really happened because of its convenience for Cold War propaganda masters. How ironic that it is GOVERNMENT which has largely spread the ideology through propaganda campaigns and thinly disguised Pentagon-supported hate groups like the John Birch society.

I think it’s unfortunately gained more traction in recent years because Democrats are no longer the ACLU type champions of “socially liberal” issues (anti-censorship being the big one). So sadly, the right has now co-opted the First Amendment under their own “personal freedoms.” I really wish that would change.
