People in bands are usually ugly. That's why they join bands: to get famous and rich so they have a chance at getting laid.

Journey owns this thread. Steve Perry is probably one of the greatest pop rock tenors/countertenors of all time, but he looks like Brenda From Accounting.

It is amazing how much MTV changed who became famous. Look at how many amazing the bands were from the 60s and 70s - when looks were secondary to talent. Oh and I was born in 1980, so those decades aren't "my" eras. Since the mid 80s, the only truly great, game changing, mainstream mega big rock bands bands were GnR, Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Green Day and maybe Coldplay (puke though). I guess The Killers too.

Interesting. Does CSNY or CCR or Tom Petty or The Who or The Stones make it in today's musical climate? I think not.

BUT, r68, it's the big fat girls who are popular now.

Well R68, The Who had a frontman good-looking enough to have a go at being a movie star, and Jagger is hugely charismatic even if he isn't good-looking. Both Jagger and Daltrey have done a bit of acting, they were both photogenic enough to have made it in the post-video era.

But really, today's music industry is all about solo artists, there are hardly any real major bands on the charts.

I always wonder what goes on in bands where one member is good-looking, and another is hideous. As in Daltrey and Townsend in The Who, or Pink Floyd, see David Gilmour and Roger Waters below. Does it always end in jealousy and drama and fights over money?

The tables turned with Pink Floyd—Gilmour is fat and bald, while Waters grew into his looks.

I happened to be looking at an old picture of Genesis and I was like "Phil Collins was the good looking one!" Not exactly goodlooking but when he still had most of his hair and he was young, he wasn't bad looking. Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford sort of grew into their looks no one would say hot but not so awkward. Somehow now they all look like school teachers.

Saw a Genesis documentary last year and Tony Banks came across like a real asshole.

R78 how desperately I want to agree. Crüe are awful people to the last man, and got the faces they deserve.

Unfortunately, truth wins out and we must acknowledge that Vince Neil was gorgeous once. Not in a masculine way and not for very long and having nothing to back it up, but he was undeniably nice-looking. In their youth quite a few of those scumbag party-metal guys resembled pretty girls; Seb Bach, Axl Rose, Bret Michaels...I think only Phil Lewis (L.A. Guns) & Jani Lane when sober had nice personalities to match their looks.

But Crüe are the ones laughing, with $50m each in the bank. We should be so lucky.

What are the odds that those old goats still have 50 mil in the bank? Sure, I bet they've earned it, but they've probably spent it all by now. Because really, that's why so many of the old bands were out touring until a month ago, they need the money. Either for the old age which is looming, or because tonight's hookers and blow aren't going to pay for themselves.
