What was your favorite candy/sweets as a kid?

Just for distraction, let's post pics and talk about our favorite candies that we loved as a kid.

I had a love/hate relationship with Now and Laters, especially the Banana flavor:

I would chill this in the refrigerator. When it was hard, I’d crack it on the steps outside so that it broke into pieces.

Wine gums, and I still love them.

by Anonymousreply 5March 29, 2020 6:26 PM

r5 Wine gums? I've never heard of them. Is it a European candy?

by Anonymousreply 6March 29, 2020 6:30 PM

Anything chocolate...

by Anonymousreply 7March 29, 2020 6:30 PM

R6 I'm in Canada, and they're quite common. They're also in the UK. They're wine-flavored, chewy, and various colors. They're much harder than gummies that the kids eat.

by Anonymousreply 8March 29, 2020 6:33 PM

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, preferably frozen.

I'd bite off the outer edge of chocolate entirely before eating the center.

by Anonymousreply 9March 29, 2020 6:33 PM

Della, that is what I do to anything circular shaped- Oreos, Ding Dongs, cookies.

by Anonymousreply 10March 29, 2020 6:35 PM

Frozen Milkshake bars. We had a candy store in town (Franklin Square, LI, NY), where they sold them frozen in the summer. Unfortunately, they were discontinued by the mid 1960s, so I only got to enjoy them for a few tears.

I'm always feel relieved when a personal quirk ain't just me. I love the fudge covered Oreos.

by Anonymousreply 16March 29, 2020 7:48 PM

Mackintosh’s toffee

If it was too hard, you could smack it against a wall and eat the pieces. My fillings ache (in a good way) just thinking about it.

The nice thing about Now and Laters and Turkish Taffy was that they lasted much longer than chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 24March 29, 2020 8:16 PM

Anything brightly colored and artificial. Funny enough, I never cared for chocolate as a child and didn't understand all the fuss. I loved Starbursts and Nerds though.

by Anonymousreply 25March 29, 2020 8:17 PM

Oh Henry chocolate bars, butterfingers, Snicker, jolly rancher twin bars, chickosticks, bitohoney, Boston baked beans (candy coated peanut), Munch (a peanut brittle bar). I had a $12 a week candy habit.

by Anonymousreply 26March 29, 2020 8:20 PM

Necco wafers. A thin, hard candy that came in rolls, either multi-colored/flavored, or chocolate, which was my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 27March 29, 2020 8:20 PM

Starburst & Skittles. For kids on a budget, these were good. You had to chew them a long time & they were packed with flavor.

Wow it's fascinating see the difference between American and European candies and sweets. Did anyone like Lik M Aid Fun Dip? it basically was flavored sugar and a candy stick. I thought I would be thrifty and just eat straight Kool-Aid, but after eating 1/3 of a can, my throat closed up.

Only candy I never liked was KitKats...blech

by Anonymousreply 36March 29, 2020 10:40 PM

Bun bars.

Large rounded area of vanilla creme, covered by peanuts and milk chocolate.

Cost a whopping 10c in the early 60’s. A quarter got me a comic book and one of these.

by Anonymousreply 37March 29, 2020 11:11 PM

I remember in the '60s when I was a kid, Hershey Bars were a nickel, then they doubled to a dime (but got bigger, I think.) Some of the other candies stayed at a nickel, so I'd get those at the movies.

Mint Dream by Russell Stover are less fluffy and fun to eat than they used to be (did they cut expenses by cutting out gelatin?). Now, the filling is kinda runny and no longer sold in drug stores near me. Maybe that's a good thing.

Clark Bars, 5th Avenue, O Henry, Black Crows, Candy Cigarettes. Does anyone remember the candy that was very much like Reese Cups, but was put out by the people who made Mallo Cups? I'm drawing a blank on their name, but they were good.

by Anonymousreply 44March 30, 2020 12:48 AM

When I was 4 or 5, I really liked Milk Duds. Then one day I somehow got hold of a family-sized box of them and ate the whole thing. I puked all night and well into the next morning. I never ate another one and never want to. Do they still even make Milk Duds?

by Anonymousreply 52March 30, 2020 1:30 AM

Kiwi here, I loved pineapple lumps, whittakers peanut slabs and jubes!

by Anonymousreply 53March 30, 2020 1:33 AM

R23, I also loved Good and Plenty. Just last week, my brother was telling me he had bought some at the dollar store, and how much he had enjoyed it.

Chiclets gum--the little boxes which had 12 jewel-toned rectangles. I thought the colors were so pretty. You could also get them Tiny-sized. You could pour these into your mouth.

The necklaces with round pastel-colored buttons flavored like artificial banana extract.

Chick-O-Sticks bring me back to the summer swim club my family joined. Those and the hunky life guards who twirled their whistles around their fingers. In the locker room, I discovered auburn-haired Bernie had an enormous bush. I measure all others by it. Mel had a smoldering face and a hairy chest. I prayed I could see his bush (I imagined it to be comparable to Bernie's) one day.

by Anonymousreply 59March 30, 2020 1:57 AM

Mary Jane's. Penny per piece; good times.

[quote][R52] -RexofSB - I LOVED Milk Duds, too. I'm pretty sure they still make them

It's funny how you can get so crazed about something, yet the first time it makes you sick to your stomach you throw a hate on it from that time on. For that reason, I'm glad I never got sick on Junior Mints. God, I love Junior Mints! They're one of the few things that tastes absolutely identical from when I was a kid in the 1950s.

by Anonymousreply 61March 30, 2020 2:20 AM

Around 2003 a powder candy stick mania hit our town. I remember the floor in our school being super dirty, because you had to bite the top of the straw off to get to the delicious dextrose on the inside and naturally most kids spat it right out onto the floor. The headmaster soon had them banned. Now they weren't really my favorite candy but just thinking about us all being addicted to that stuff like it was crack for a few weeks makes me smile.

by Anonymousreply 65March 30, 2020 3:03 AM

Loved Bubilicious gum, especially raspberry flavor. Used to was the whole pack in my mouth then put it in freezer for a while. Intense. Also used to put Snickers bars on a plate in the microwave for thirty seconds, eaten with a fork. Again, intense!

[quote]I had a love/hate relationship with Now and Laters, especially the Banana flavor:

Now and Laters were the scent of my youth. Anyone who grew up in Brooklyn and passed over the Gowanus, could smell them being made every day at the factory

by Anonymousreply 73March 31, 2020 12:53 AM

Plain M&Ms, but they had to be from a big bag, not a small bag. To this day (thankfully) the ones from the big bags taste better than the ones from the small (vending machine, Halloween) bags. I hate to deliver this news, but it's true.

by Anonymousreply 74March 31, 2020 1:01 AM

Ha r73, we had a bread factory and a candy factory by me in Chicago. I hated Tuesdays- it was butterscotch day. To this day, I can't stand butterscotch candy.

Ding Dongs, Ho Hos, Twinkies, Pop Tarts and Hostess Pies were also a big part of my youth.

R3 omg I totally forgot about Marathon Bars. I loved those.

Although I generally wasn’t big on him, I did love Razzles, which started with the texture of slightly softer Sweet Tarts and then turned into gum. Speaking of Sweet Tarts, I also loved them.

I remember corner stores in the 70s would sell these small candies for something like three for 10 cents. I think often you could get an extra piece of the lower quality Ice Cubes for the same price paid for a lesser number of Andes.

by Anonymousreply 87March 31, 2020 3:42 AM

Wait a second, that Seven Up is even better than the Sky Bar! What country is that from?

by Anonymousreply 88March 31, 2020 3:43 AM

I'm still asking 12 year-old boys to show me their penises for a Clark bar.

Why?

by Anonymousreply 103April 5, 2020 2:53 AM

I think there's something wrong with anyone who doesn't choose chocolate. Smarties are gross! I cursed the party bags I used to get which had those shitty little candies.

by Anonymousreply 104April 5, 2020 2:59 AM

My British grandmother always gets licorice all-sorts (in the bulk tubes) at the grocery. I grew up with them. Very foreign to many Americans.

by Anonymousreply 115April 5, 2020 9:14 PM

The original "Summit" bar.

Not the remake that appeared like ten years later... it was a pale imitation.

The original "Summit" bar was two sticks, wafers with cream and topped with chopped peanuts and covered in chocolate (the top looked like a littel mountain range).

It was awesome. It didn't last long, sadly.
