After I got out of art school I lived in north Philly, this was in the mid-80s, and there were a lot of hookers in the area. I remember coming home late and seeing a girl who couldn't have been more than 16 wearing earphones and staring at the ground. I don't think being there was her choice. I did a painting of her from memory later though it's not very good.

For her to have been a prostitute for nearly 20 years, it seems as if some of the early years were when she was a minor. Since statistics show that most prostitutes start at the age of 12.

Seems to me they described their life trajectory truthfully. I say that knowing everyone edits, and invents a story that helps them continue living. I have had really hard knocks but am in a much more secure life story but I don't condescend to these ladies and I think its human to feel pity for them.
