British royal family Nazi ties

Can someone explain the connection to me? It's hard to get the facts without winding up in a conspiracy rabbit hole

by Anonymousreply 52June 6, 2020 8:24 PM

There are two basic ties. One is that the Queen's uncle Edward VIII, later known as the Duke of Windsor, was known to be sympathetic to the Nazis and that they planned to reinstall him as a puppet King, if they conquered the UK. Also, after the abdication he and Wallis went on an ill-advised tour of Nazi Germany.

The other tie, is Prince Phillip's family. His sisters all married Germans who were committed Nazis. His mother, however, it must be remembered, is a Righteous Among Nations.

by Anonymousreply 1March 3, 2020 2:38 AM

the family is german, OP. not to mention aristocrats.

Kaiser Wilhelm (who had similar feelings but felt that the Nazis went too far with them) was their cousin.

the Anglosphere is fascist in its leanings, vs. "scary" socialism.

by Anonymousreply 2March 3, 2020 2:50 AM

R1 Isn't there a photo of the Queen herself being taught the Nazi salute as a child? How do you unlearn that? Also Stephen Fry recalled a story about Princess Margaret flipping out about him being Jewish at a dinner party...

by Anonymousreply 3March 3, 2020 2:52 AM

Philip's sister Cecelie joined the Nazi party and was an active member, along with her German husband.

by Anonymousreply 4March 3, 2020 2:56 AM

R3 The pictures of the Queen, as a child, doing the Nazi salute was from a time when people thought the Nazis were harmless.

by Anonymousreply 5March 3, 2020 3:02 AM

Another silly question. Did the royal family at all benefit from the third reich? I understand the Queen has an extensive art collection that even the public isn't allowed to see. Any Nazi looted treasures/stolen Jewish wealth hiding in her archives?

by Anonymousreply 6March 3, 2020 3:05 AM

If there are, it wouldn't have come from the Third Reich, but would have been confiscated by the victorious British/Allied army. So it would have been looted from the looters.

by Anonymousreply 7March 3, 2020 3:08 AM

R1 don't forget Harry thought it would be just fun if he dressed up as a Nazi at a party 1 year

R4 and after she died in a plane crash, Philip can be seen in a photo at her funeral surrounded by Nazis in the procession

another of his sisters, Sophie, described Hitler as "charming and modest". She sat at the same table as him at Hermann Goering's wedding in 1935

by Anonymousreply 8June 5, 2020 2:33 AM

Philip also said in an interview in the last 20 years that his family "had inhibitions about the Jews" and "jealousy of their success"

by Anonymousreply 9June 5, 2020 2:43 AM

Attempting to call the current or past royal family "Germans" is ridiculous. The Kaiser (Wilhelm II) was indeed Victoria's oldest grandson, but with WWI the family summarily dropped both German names and many of their German relatives. WWII made the split even more definite. The suggestion that British aristocracy was pro-Hitler, once people knew what Hitler was, is both absurd and offensive.

David and Wallis were bizarre special cases, craven and hungry for outward manifestations of honor and the trappings of power. Their Germany sympathies, manipulated and cultivated by the Nazis, was disgraceful. No one supported them who knew of their appalling games with being lured to Lisbon, where they likely would have been taken.

Philip's sister, Princess Cecilie, died in a horrific way, apparently giving birth on board the plane and dying with family members and her newborn as the plane attempted a medical emergency landing in bad weather. This was in 1937. At that time the Nazi salute was not yet fully associated with the horrors to come.

Philip's comments demonstrate an understanding of some of the roots of anti-Semitism greater than many DL posters.

Enough shit.

by Anonymousreply 10June 5, 2020 2:46 AM

Queen Elizabeth’s extended German family had several Nazis, including The Landgrave of Hesse (whose Italian princess wife wound up dying in Buchenwald), Princess Alexandra of Hohenlohe, and The Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

This blog poster assembled a good list from a book written based on Nazi archival material

R10 by 1937 the Nazis had already oppressed Jews in Germany and stripped them of many basic rights. It wouldn't have been innocent for anyone supporting them at that point. There were also frequent antisemitic propaganda parades throughout many German cities and towns.

by Anonymousreply 12June 5, 2020 3:01 AM

The Queen Mum and the King were hedging their bets. After the war, they had to send someone to Germany to get all the letters and incriminating documents between the royal family and Hitler. And it was between Elizabeth and George. Yes Edward had a relationship with hitler, but so did E & G. That's why the Royal Archives are sealed

by Anonymousreply 13June 5, 2020 3:09 AM

damn I wish someone could get access to those forbidden archives and make them public

between the Brits and the Vatican you know they got lots of bad secrets

by Anonymousreply 14June 5, 2020 3:18 AM

Prince Philip's sisters all married Nazis.

"When Philip was 16, tragedy followed him to Scotland. Philip’s sister, Cecilie, was killed with her husband and two children. She had been pregnant at the time. When Philip traveled to Germany for the funeral, his deceased sister’s Nazi associations became especially apparent. Cecilie had joined the party with her husband, George Donatous, earlier that year. The 16-year-old Philip was pictured standing amid Nazi soldiers.

Cecile wasn’t the only sister with Nazi links. Sophie, Philip's youngest sister, married Prince Christoph von Hessen, who became a director for Third Reich’s Ministry of Air Forces. Sophie and Christoph were charmed by Hitler when they met him during a private lunch in their apartment. In her memoir, which she wrote in old age, Sophie wrote, “I have to say here, that, although Chri [Prince Christoph] and I changed our political view fundamentally some years later, we were impressed by this charming and seemingly modest man, and by his plans to change and improve the situation in Germany.” Sophie and Christoph named their eldest son, Karl Adolf, after Hitler.

Last of all, Princess Margarita married Gottfried, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, a commander in the German army. Gottfried’s political views changed towards the end of the war. In 1944, he joined a plot organized by fellow aristocrats to assassinate Hitler in 1944, and was consequently dismissed from the army."

by Anonymousreply 15June 5, 2020 3:27 AM

Speaking very broadly the 1930s British establishment thought Hitler was a Charlie Chaplin-like buffoon BUT Germany under his dictatorship provided a solid wall against Russian expansion. The Brownshirts were created initially as street fighters against their German Communist counterparts, not the general Jewish population.. And if this led to Germany and Russia eventually going to war so much the better for neutral Britain.

Edward's treason as described above is a whole other subject.

by Anonymousreply 16June 5, 2020 3:47 AM

In the book, "And What Do You Do?" by Norman Baker, he says that when Princess Margaret met Ann Landers, she asked "Are you Jewish?" When Ann said yes, Princess Margaret walked away. They're all anti-semites.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2020 3:51 AM

[quote] the family is german, OP.

Once maybe; but now, not really. There is some German in the family, but it is slowly being bred out.

Yes, Prince Philip is mostly German by ancestry (even though he was born in Greece); but remember the current Queen is half-Scottish by ancestry. Charles and her other three children are thus half German (more or less) and only about a quarter British; but William's mother was entirely English, so William is at least three-quarters British. And he married a woman of English ancestry, so Prince George and his two siblings are each seven-eighths British.

Philip was also educated in Scotland and fought for the UK during WWII. He never spoke with a German accent during his adult life, so it really doesn;t make that much sense to speak of him as German.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2020 3:52 AM

And r17, Princess Margaret may have been an anti-Semite, but that says absolutely nothing about the rest of the family--she was widely regarded as the black sheep of the family.

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2020 3:53 AM

Princess Margaret's gay/bi ex husband was 1/4 Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 20June 5, 2020 3:56 AM

Jew hatred in Britain is ancient and institutionalized. Claiming that a member of the Royal family may not be is absurd.

by Anonymousreply 21June 5, 2020 4:03 AM

R19 if Margot was the black sheep what was Uncle Edward?

by Anonymousreply 22June 5, 2020 4:08 AM

There was a second Margaret incident

"Princess Margaret. The sister of Queen Elizabeth II, writes Kelley, walked out of a showing of Schindler's List saying: "I don't want to hear another word about Jews or the Holocaust . . . I heard enough during the war." Kelley also tells of an encounter between the princess and columnist Ann Landers, during which Margaret asked: "Are you a Jew?" and then walked away when Landers said she was. (A call to Landers' Chicago office confirmed the incident.) "

by Anonymousreply 23June 5, 2020 4:08 AM

Princess Margaret was a CUNT. This was well known.

by Anonymousreply 24June 5, 2020 4:12 AM

R24 Look at who her grandmothers were. Cuntness was in her genes.

by Anonymousreply 25June 5, 2020 4:15 AM

"This was in 1937. At that time the Nazi salute was not yet fully associated with the horrors to come."

Why would an apologist here say that? FDR - a lot further away in Washington - was warning the US about Hitler long before 1937.

William Dodd, the US ambassador to Germany from 1933 to 1937 simply stopped dealing with Nazi officials knowing how vile they were.

None are so blind as those who will not see.

by Anonymousreply 26June 5, 2020 4:15 AM

In the last fifteen years or so, didn't one of the Princes cause an uproar by wearing a Nazi uniform for a costumed occasion?

by Anonymousreply 27June 5, 2020 4:20 AM

Yes the DUMBBELL Prince Harry wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party. He's such a FRAT boy.

[quote]Yes the DUMBBELL Prince Harry wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party. He's such a FRAT boy.

R28, rather than being a frat boy being the explanation, might it not have been his having been raised in an environment which perhaps did not regard the Nazis quite as unfavorably as the rest of society? Might not public reaction to his stunt have taken him by surprise?

by Anonymousreply 31June 5, 2020 4:31 AM

He's a FRAT boy because in general he's STUPID and AVERAGE.

by Anonymousreply 32June 5, 2020 4:34 AM

R22 Like father like son.

by Anonymousreply 33June 5, 2020 4:36 AM

If someone’s grandfather was a Bolshevik, do we assume that person holds the same views? I sure as hell don’t hold the same political views as the rest of my family.

by Anonymousreply 34June 5, 2020 4:44 AM

Aren’t the Queen and Phillip cousins? So his Nazi sisters are also her Nazi relations.

by Anonymousreply 35June 5, 2020 4:46 AM

So Stephen Fry, Ann Landers and Schindler's List incidents. Yeah I'd say Margie must have been antisemitic

In all fairness to Harry, the party where he dressed as a Nazi had a specific theme to wear something offensive. And at the time, he admitted that his relatives had Nazi ties.

by Anonymousreply 42June 5, 2020 12:45 PM

I’d say Charles is many things, because Philip is German and Danish, English, and French and Elizabeth is Scottish, English, French, German, and.....Hungarian. Yes, her grandmother Queen Mary was paternally descended from the nobility of the former Holy Roman Empire. Diana was all English with a sliver of American, Kate is all English, so little George is a regular English rose.

All of the reigning royal and princely families in Europe descend many hundreds of years ago from a prince of what is now The Netherlands.

The 60 papers of correspondence discovered are alleged to have further detailed a plot by the Nazis titled Operation Willi, orchestrated in 1940, in the hope of either persuading the Duke of Windsor to officially join sides with the Nazis and move him to Germany in a bid to bring the UK to peace negotiations, to convince the Duke of a phony plot by King George VI and Prime Minister Winston Churchill to have him assassinated upon his arrival in The Bahamas, or a conspiracy by the Nazis and the Duke to stage a kidnapping in a hope of blackmailing the monarchy to persuade the UK to surrender.[10] The papers are also alleged to show the possibility of the Nazis' plan to reinstate the Duke as king, whilst also officially recognising his wife, Wallis, as queen, in exchange for Nazi forces being given free movement across Europe.[11][12]

Documents considered the most damning for the royal family were among his final communications with the Nazis before his departure to the Bahamas, in which it was stated the Duke encouraged relentless bombing attacks on the United Kingdom in a bid to force the British government to begin peace negotiations.[13] There is not believed to be any form of evidence that the Duke accepted any terms offered by the Nazis in a bid to co-operate with Operation Willi, believing he was initially more impressed by the encouragement he had from the British government to become Governor of the Bahamas,[7] but some documents are alleged to confirm he sympathised with their ideologies, and maintained the war would not have happened had he remained monarch.

And once again, the Americans saved Britain's ass. Had Wallis Simpson not tempted him away, the Brits would be speaking German today.

Somebody needs to write an alternative history tv show, along the lines of The Man In The High Castle, where Wallis was working for the American government. I'm surprised Sarah Jessica Simpson's people haven't already thought of this for her.

by Anonymousreply 51June 6, 2020 6:38 PM

R49 And they bitch that it took us two years to do so - for the second time in less than twenty-five years despite ignoring the growing Nazi threat in their own neighborhood for five years and then attempting to appease them. And didn’t at all like FDR’s determination that the price they’d pay for US help was the loss of their racist, Imperialist empire.

Perfidious Albion indeed.
