Do we like her?
We like her, we really like her.
But some of us are still embarrassed by the cemetery scene in Steel Magnolias.

Flying Nun!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 18, 2020 10:27 PM |
... No.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 18, 2020 10:28 PM |
She should have been nominated for Steel Magnolias. But then the movie should have also been nominated for Best Picture, Director, and another supporting nom for Shirley MacLaine, who also should have been nominated the following year for Postcards from the Edge.
Sally is perfection in Norma Rae, Soapdish, Not Without My Duaghter, and Places in the Heart.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 18, 2020 10:40 PM |
The people, the people
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 18, 2020 10:40 PM |
Yeah, I like her. Sally is talented and plays a wide variety or roles.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 18, 2020 10:44 PM |
Very talented. Soapdish is an underrated favorite, but she’s wonderful in everything.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 18, 2020 10:46 PM |
She is 73 and looks tremendous.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 18, 2020 11:03 PM |
Is she the one with the tits or the glass eye?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 18, 2020 11:07 PM |
R1, I agree. Her cemetery breakdown scene makes me cringe whenever I watch it. And personally, I think she was a bit of a lightweight in Soapdish. The role needed someone with more bearing to pull off Grande Soap Opera Diva.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 18, 2020 11:34 PM |
I hate to think that she came down with amoebic dysentery, or piles.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 18, 2020 11:38 PM |
Kathleen Turner?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 18, 2020 11:38 PM |
She will always be Gidget to me.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 19, 2020 1:09 AM |
Love her -And would love to meet her cute gay son, Sam!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 19, 2020 1:24 AM |
She made a small film A Cooler Climate on YouTube that’s worth watching. Judy Davis costars, too. Field’s character is broke, divorced who takes a job as a housekeeper to rich insufferable Davis. It’s predictable but fun.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 29, 2020 4:33 PM |
I like her but her book was AWFUL.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 29, 2020 4:35 PM |
Can't understand why she thought her son, Sam, would want to have a relationship with that screaming queen .
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 29, 2020 4:43 PM |
I saw those inexplicable “No” responses in the poll above and thought:
I-I just wanna *hit* somebody 'til they feel as bad as I do! I just wanna hit something! I wanna hit it hard!

Her book really turned me off to her.

Whatever her skin care regime is - and it’s probably genetic anyway - we should follow it.
She has the most amazing skin for her age
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 29, 2020 6:34 PM |
Not everyone wants to follow one of DL’s stupider affectations, r20. It was one overwrought DLer who came up with that, & he thought he was *so* clever he browbeat anyone who didn’t use it. Well, his reign of terror is OVER!

He’s pretty nasty & snarky. Check him out on Twitter - he’s unbelievably bitter about everything.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 29, 2020 7:25 PM |
R24 wouldn't you be? both his brothers have solid careers. He...goes to parties.
I remember finding a tumblr or something of his YEARS ago where he spilled family tea. What I remember was Sally's sister is a HOT MESS and Sally way overshared about her sex life with her gay son.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 29, 2020 7:58 PM |
I think the reason he has nothing to brag about is because he's such a bitter bitch. A change of attitude would do wonders for him.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 29, 2020 8:14 PM |
R23 You seem to be leading a one-cunt resistance to it. Get over it, Mary.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 29, 2020 8:15 PM |
I've been a fan since I was in my teens when I saw her in the thriller Home for the Holidays.

I slapped Sally, of course. Dammit Sally!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 29, 2020 8:33 PM |
I just can't believe there was an actual TV show with this concept.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 29, 2020 8:37 PM |
Go Sally!

MAD magazine had a great parody which was probably very accurate in describing how the Flying Nun came about. It began "Bring on to me the ultimate gimmick" and went on to describe crossing the adorable teenager (Gidget--a show that flopped in first run but found its audience in summer reruns) with nuns (The Singing Nun, The Sound of Music, The Trouble with Angels---nuns were big in show business), and adding something supernatural (Screen Gems which produced Gidget also had the successful Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie shows and it's parent Columbia had produced the Trouble with Angels).
What' even weirder is that US Catholic Church's tv office cooperated with the production of The Flying Nun. Ironically, R32's link mentions Spring "Big Old Dyke" as a guest star portraying Mother General.
Field hated the show but built friendships with her mostly older and wiser castmates, including Madeline Sherwood who pushed her toward going to acting school. So for all her griping, the show led to Field taking steps to become a real actress.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 29, 2020 9:05 PM |
Madeleine Sherwood was a tough old broad. She'd seen it and done it all, worked with everyone, and didn't suffer fools gladly. In fact, she didn't suffer anyone gladly. She was a bitch, but if she believed in you and liked you, she was fiercely loyal.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 29, 2020 9:57 PM |
Where were the lyrics to the Flying Nun theme? Did they only use them on Season 1?
"Who needs wings to fly?
Certainly not I!
Long as there's a habit standing by,
Who needs things like wings to fly?"
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 29, 2020 10:01 PM |
Love her. And she really does look unbelievable in person. I got to meet her after that awful Glass Menagerie she was in a few years ago (she was great, the production sucked) and I thought I was looking at someone 20 years younger than her true age.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 29, 2020 10:21 PM |
Still jealous as fuck if the rumors that she got to ride Dave Annable are true.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 29, 2020 10:37 PM |
R36: I always wondered how Sherwood got along with Burl Ives when they made "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". She had been blacklisted and he had named names.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 29, 2020 11:30 PM |
Annable looks a bit old for 40.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 29, 2020 11:41 PM |
You're too used to dyed hair and botoxed faces, probably.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 29, 2020 11:42 PM |
I suspected he shaved a few years off his age in the earlier part of his career....betting he's more like 45 or so.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 29, 2020 11:44 PM |
I love Sally but agree about Steel Magnolias. Scenery-chewing at its worst.
But she usually delivers. I loved her in Punchline with Tom Hanks. And Muprhy's Romance.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 29, 2020 11:47 PM |
R4 Not Without My Oscar was terrible and Sally did not rise above the material.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 1, 2020 12:04 AM |
Some people have Oscars they don't deserve, while others are blocked from the podium by nominees better suited for the Best Actor category....

Sally Field stole Patty Duke’s fame. Although Patty was queen of the TV mini-series in the 1970s winning two or three Emmys.
