Front Loader or Top Load (With Agitator) or Top Load (Without)

well?

by Anonymousreply 50February 20, 2020 10:28 PM

Top load, no agitator. No issues with the stink factor that can affect front loads. When I was looking every woman I asked said she had come to hate her front loader. My top load is HE and water use has measurably dropped. Brand is LG. The only thing I don't like is the tub is deep and I am not tall so sometimes pulling stuff out is a bit of reach. Other than that do not regret not having a front load and I thought I really really really really really really wanted one.

by Anonymousreply 1February 18, 2020 2:34 PM

R1, I'm thinking about getting a machine like yours. Are you happy with how clean it gets your clothes?

I've thought about getting a front-loader, but I don't want the extra step of having to clean it out to prevent the moldy smell.

by Anonymousreply 2February 18, 2020 2:50 PM

R2, I have no complaints about cleanliness. I like to use a lot of cold water so often times I use the soak function and OxyClean if I want to satisfy myself it's had the best shot of breaking up stains. Takes forever though. FYI they advise you to run Tub Clean function on my top load... once a month, bleach, hot water. No big deal. I also tend to leave the lid up.

by Anonymousreply 3February 18, 2020 3:01 PM

LG washing machines with their heaven-sent TurboWash express mode are the best.

by Anonymousreply 4February 18, 2020 3:03 PM

R3, Thanks for the info.

by Anonymousreply 5February 18, 2020 3:08 PM

Top loader without agitator is the best way to go.

Agitators are hard on your clothes.

And front-loaders take forever and I never feel that they completely rinse the clothing.

by Anonymousreply 6February 18, 2020 3:08 PM

Life is a funny thing..... OP and I are sharing politely sharing information about top loaders on this thread and I just blocked her on another for a lazy "typical white racists" post. Funny old world.

by Anonymousreply 7February 18, 2020 3:08 PM

I once had a front-loader. It cost me about $1,500.

After owning it a couple of months, a plastic piece on the locking mechanism broke during its incredibly fast final spin.

Wet towels shot across the room, slamming against my kitchen walls and cabinets.

Do you have your top-loader set on "Whitest Whites"?

by Anonymousreply 9February 18, 2020 3:14 PM

Nope. Generally it's on Normal. I find taking a usual approach lets you get the most out of everything.

by Anonymousreply 10February 18, 2020 3:16 PM

I bought a top loader without the agitator and i really love it. I was also worried about the smell from front load machines. I've had mine about a year and i think its better than my old washer with the agitator

by Anonymousreply 11February 18, 2020 3:17 PM

R10 It was a joke.

by Anonymousreply 12February 18, 2020 3:28 PM

Yes LG top loader with no agitator.....quick and not quite as noisy as my former Whirlpool.......

by Anonymousreply 13February 18, 2020 3:33 PM

Top loader because you can pre-soak your really dirty clothes for as many hours as you like.

Front loaders stink because they have a design flaw in the flange(?) which traps moisture. I read that somewhere...

by Anonymousreply 14February 18, 2020 3:37 PM

The agitator doesn’t do shit

by Anonymousreply 15February 18, 2020 3:40 PM

My front loader has never stunk

by Anonymousreply 16February 18, 2020 3:41 PM

R16 Sure, Cheryl.

by Anonymousreply 17February 18, 2020 4:24 PM

I got a HE washer in 2001 - Whirlpool Calypso - and I had an awful experience with it so I swore off top loading, no agitator machines. I'm sure they've improved since then. A few years ago I got a Maytag commercial model. It's an old fashioned top loader with an agitator and 3 knobs, no computer and no far so good.

by Anonymousreply 18February 18, 2020 5:25 PM

OMG...I had no idea what this was about. I thought it said alligator and then it was about oral or anal sex. I need to slow down and appreciate what is being written.

by Anonymousreply 19February 18, 2020 5:42 PM

I have an HE LG front loader and can attest that the Turbo Wash setting mentioned above is a godsend. I did a lot of research prior to buying it on sale and have fount two things to help prevent it smelling bad: 1) using vinegar in the fabric softener cup, and 2) leaving the door ajar when not in use. I’ve had it between 5-10 years and it’s been uneventful so far, in a good way.

by Anonymousreply 20February 18, 2020 5:44 PM

This all sounds like pornography.

by Anonymousreply 21February 18, 2020 6:35 PM

I've had front loaders for years, and always leave the door open a bit when not in use. This was a suggestion from the salesman who sold me the first one. Have never had an odor problem with any of them.

by Anonymousreply 22February 18, 2020 6:39 PM

I had a huge LG top loader without an agitator...the damn thing would never balance correctly. It would dump the water then refill as it tried to rebalance itself...I hated that fucking machine. My favorite was my Maytag front loader...it lasted me for 25 yrs

by Anonymousreply 23February 18, 2020 8:42 PM

^ that happens to me sometimes when I overload bulky items.

by Anonymousreply 24February 18, 2020 9:09 PM

Are the LG top loaders better than the Samsung and Whirlpool top loaders?

by Anonymousreply 25February 18, 2020 9:32 PM

I like an old fashioned top loader with an agitator. I do hate how all machines after 2005 have to lock the lid. Were kids drowning in them before then?

by Anonymousreply 26February 18, 2020 9:33 PM

Top loader with agitator. Speed Queen (of course). Had two front loaders in the past. Never again.

by Anonymousreply 27February 18, 2020 10:50 PM

I thought this was another sex thread.

by Anonymousreply 28February 18, 2020 11:48 PM

R26 YouTube showed me how to defeat the lid lock on my top loader. Very easy. Check yours.

by Anonymousreply 29February 19, 2020 12:27 AM

r23...yes, if I washed sheets, no matter how carefully I loaded, the damn thing couldn't balance.. What was the point of having such a big washer if it couldn't handle the load. R25, my LG leaked the first time I used it...I think most mid range priced washers are pretty much the same

by Anonymousreply 30February 19, 2020 1:04 PM

CR reports tons of leaks and near 100% for mould

by Anonymousreply 31February 19, 2020 1:31 PM

Consumer Reports cites these problems for which type, R31, front loaders or top loaders?

by Anonymousreply 32February 19, 2020 1:37 PM

[quote]Are the LG top loaders better than the Samsung and Whirlpool top loaders?

DO NOT, under any circumstances, buy any kind of Samsung washer. Their reputation among service people is shit, and for good reason. A couple of years ago I bought a brand new one with all the bells and whistles. Worked beautifully for about 9 months. Then, slowly but surely, the issues began. It started with loads of towels - at the point when it was time to kick over to the spin cycle, it would instead start the wash cycle over again, taking several tries to reach the spin cycle. This got progressively worse until it was simply unusable. The repair guy told us it was because some part that gauges the weight of the load was bent, and that if we replaced it, it would just happen again. It was still under warranty and he advised us to simply accept a replacement machine and be prepared to replace it with a different brand when the new one started exhibiting the same problem. Which it did, about a year later.

We don't have a Samsung anymore.

Anyone have any idea where to find a narrow depth (25 inch) washer/dryer. I have a set that is 20+ years old in my basement and I can’t fit anything bigger. I have looked everywhere and except for the super-small apartment ones, I can’t find anything. It’s so frustrating - I can’t believe they just stopped making them.

by Anonymousreply 34February 19, 2020 3:23 PM

R30, Did you have a top load LG that leaked?

How would a top load machine leak? Was it the water hose that leaked or the actual machine?

by Anonymousreply 35February 19, 2020 4:37 PM

Top loader with agitator - I bought a near bottom-of-the-line GE washer from Sears. (Hey, moving was expensive!) The thing doesn't have a lint trap. It had never occurred to me that a washing machine would be made without one. I'm careful when loading bed linens or it will go off balance easily. O/w it has worked well for two years without repair or other issues.

by Anonymousreply 36February 20, 2020 3:16 AM

I’m considering a front loader because I get sick of going to the laundromat whenever I want to wash my comforter. My comforter won’t fit in my top loader with agitator. And I don’t want to buy a top loader without an agitator if there are balancing problems like someone up thread was saying.

by Anonymousreply 37February 20, 2020 3:23 AM

I’m a bottom loader. And I only stink if I have dairy or beans.

by Anonymousreply 38February 20, 2020 3:48 AM

Front loader

[quote]DO NOT, under any circumstances, buy any kind of Samsung washer.

That was also the consensus amongst the comments on CR

by Anonymousreply 39February 20, 2020 4:12 AM

I have a top loader with agitator and it's fine. Basic model. What amuses me is I always turn my jeans inside out before washing but when I take them out afterwards, they are turned right-side out.

by Anonymousreply 40February 20, 2020 4:13 AM

I have a LG Top Load washer without an Agitator that I ordered on-line from Costco. Like R1, I'm not tall, and the tub is deep, so it can be a little challenging sometimes getting things like socks out from the very bottom. I never realized how difficult the agitator in my old washer made it for washing comforters. I had never heard of LG before, but they had the top ratings on the Costco website, and I've been very pleased.

by Anonymousreply 41February 20, 2020 4:16 AM

I need a “top loader” in my life!

by Anonymousreply 42February 20, 2020 4:16 AM

I don't understand all this comforter washing. That's what duvet covers are for, to protect the comforter and make washing easier.

by Anonymousreply 43February 20, 2020 4:24 AM

[quote]I've had front loaders for years, and always leave the door open a bit when not in use.

How do you deal with rats crawling in and living in there if you leave it open? I once found a family of rats after a wash. Had to wash the load again.

by Anonymousreply 44February 20, 2020 5:10 AM

[quote]What amuses me is I always turn my jeans inside out before washing but when I take them out afterwards, they are turned right-side out.

Why the hell are you washing jeans?

by Anonymousreply 45February 20, 2020 5:11 AM

What the fuck?

by Anonymousreply 46February 20, 2020 5:15 AM

R43, I wash my comforters because I'm a dirty, sweaty, smelly boy.

by Anonymousreply 47February 20, 2020 5:20 AM

How fast is the turbo wash?

by Anonymousreply 48February 20, 2020 5:27 AM

Love my top loader Whirlpool Cabrio. It's about 7 years old now. Large enough to wash 2 comforters. I use Oxi-Clean for every wash, so maybe that sanitizes the washer. I also leave the lid up between washes, and never developed an odor with any washer. Oxi-clean's directions says soak first, so my washer has Pre-Soak button. My only gripe, with the pre-soak selected, the washer time takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. So no quick wash in the a.m. if you need underwear! Less water usage, and it's spin cycle cuts down on dryer time.

If my current 15 year old dryer decides to break down, I am going to look for a just inside the dryer door lint tray. My recent dryers have that long mesh lint catcher in the top that makes a mess over the top of the dryer when I slide it out to clean. Any pro's/cons about dryer lint trap placement?

I want the Maytag repairmen for just one night. Please.
