Male stars face a double standard, too, and ever since he bared his chest in “Thelma & Louise,” his work has been undervalued. But look closer and he explores masculinity in complex ways.
His work has not been undervalued, he is the sum of his parts. Baring his chest is pretty much his only talent.

he has his moments, but his main skill lies in his looks.
sadly, unlike Cary Grant, he doesn't seem to have prepared adequately for when those aren't working anymore.

What R4 said.
He's always been a middling actor - not terrible, but not in any way remarkable either. His surface was so dazzling that nobody cared. Now he'll probably get an Oscar simply becauae he has so many friends and is well-regarded in the industry. It won't be because he gave a great performance.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 3, 2020 3:56 AM |
People underestimate the effort Brad Pitt put into ACTING charming and gorgeous. Of course he was physically cute but hardly a god like apollo. He's small, was wiry, and pockmarked like Redford was as well. Marilyn Monroe put A LOT OF GENIUS into concocting her bombshell appeal. Brad Pitt made it look natural and easy but it was not and is not. It's a gift. I'm surprised you naysayers can't appreciate this. Nowadays every straight instaho has talents in working up a masculine beauty that projects. Doesn't mean they can also light up the movie stream and become a star. Brad did one, and then the other!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 3, 2020 4:08 AM |
I've always enjoyed him in movies. Is the biggest star in Hollywood because he deserves to be.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 3, 2020 4:11 AM |
R4, Cary Grant retired at 62. Brad is only five years away from that age, and he still looks good enough to do gratuitous shirtless scenes in movies.
They come from very different eras. Grant’s contemporary Garbo retired well before age 40, which would be like Nicole Kidman calling it quits fifteen years ago. The arc of a Hollywood career just isn’t comparable.

[quote] Grant’s contemporary Garbo retired well before age 40, which would be like Nicole Kidman calling it quits fifteen years ago. The arc of a Hollywood career just isn’t comparable.
Garbo was one of a kind, and her calling it quits at 40 was considered remarkable at the time. Her acting peers, like Dietrich and especially Crawford and Davis and Stanwyck, went on for decades longer.

I was born in 1983. I've been in love with Brad Pitt all of my life. Still am. The NYT article is kind of a study in the obvious though. Beautiful people have it easier and are taken less seriously. Even men. But about Pitt this is also true:
[quote]The beautiful man can make us nervous, partly because he complicates gender norms. George Clooney is more than a pretty face, more than one writer has insisted. Yes, but he is also pretty. Some of this anxiety reeks of gay panic and misogyny. Pitt has alternately rejected and embraced the dreamboat role, though he seems consistently game when asked to play that part in photo spreads

he ain't no McConaughey! a man who was beautiful, but also managed to ugly himself up and do serious work. and will be able to continue doing that even as the looks pass away completely.
perhaps Brad has limited himself through his choice of roles? he is good in those quirky character bits he tends to do. maybe it is his own fault that he rested upon his incredible physical appeal instead of stretching for more.
then again, there are only so many roles out there. and half of them are some kind of superhero. at least neither of them went THAT route.

He runs a very successful production company and he's already won an Oscar and a Prime-Time Emmy for producing. He said a few weeks ago that he now plans to cut back on acting to focus more on producing.
His looks are not really to my taste so I may have paid more attention to what he actually does on screen rather than his appearance, and I think he's a better actor than he's being given credit for in this thread.

After his SAG acceptance speech a few weeks ago, I think I might have fallen in love with him. He seems like that cool jock who was popular in high school simply because he was just a good guy. He just appeared to be a kind, thoughtful stoner. It says a lot that even his ex still seems to be on friendly terms with him.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 4, 2020 2:26 AM |
Back in Springfield he'd get drunk enough to let a guy play with him a little, but he'd never let you make him cum. He said that he wasn't giving in because if he did he'd never stop. He'd just finish himself and have another beer. He used to babysit for families I knew when he was younger, for cash, and he was great with kids and responsible. He's never forgotten, with all the craziness and phony relationships and going over the line how to pull back to his values. It's why he can still laugh with an open face and almost none of the others can. He puts up with everyone because he says, "We're all fucked up one way or another so who am I to judge?" And he can't stand Aniston.

Weird. I distinctly remember his entre into the film world. He was a character actor than. Kalifornia, True Romance, Thelma and Louise, 12 Monkeys, Johnny Suede. All memorable performances, very different from each other. Along the way Robert Redford made him a movie star.
His reputation as a bad actor I attribute to Legends of the Fall and Meet Joe Black. For some reason when Brad and Anthony Hopkins get together a vortex of bad acting occurs.
The comparisons with Cary Grant is perfect. Brad Pitt's greatest role now is playing Brad Pitt, just like Cary finally just became what he was pretending to be.
Just before Xmas Brad won a court battle with AJ over custody. She wanted to move the kids out of California and he squashed it. She responded by screwing up his Xmas visitations. I think this limits both their ability to work as they can't do extensive location shooting. But Brad can produce. He has friends and colleagues that love him and he'll do well.
Their war will continue. I think he has the bigger war chest and options.

I have just seen him in "The Big Short" a film about the banking crisis. He is phenomenal in it; I didn't even realise it was him until way into the film. He's one of the producers too.
Let's face it, he's brilliant. If only he hadn't married that crazy b**** Angelina, and he'd stayed with what's her name, he'll be a lot more respected nowadays.

I love Brad Pitt. ASS. And his nose and lips. I read on Datalounge that some think his nose is simian or some veiled racist nonsense. The Brad Pitt nose is the most requested male nose job in the world. The guy who fixed my nose told me that, as did the nurse in his private office. She said to me " You look like a dark Brad Pitt!!
Like Lindsay Lohan, it's the bridge nostril ratio and the angle of his articulate beautiful nose projection that elevates the rest of his hot boy look to something much more rare. He did an interview with Cate Blanchett on Oprah for that not bad film - Babylon? He wore a thin moustache and was a complete ass, but he looked like Errol Flynn. I have never seen an Errol Flynn movie in my life. But I watched t old hollywood documentaries. Pitt was very handsome. And is now hot handsome, a bit skeeved.
Brad and Jen looked great together. That relaxed elegance that is her style and the just out of bed hair that they wore so well, together. He became more slick and serious looking with Angelina. He looks right with all of his women. He assimilates their body postures, mood and personal style. Even in casual photos, he somehow manages to match the expression of his romantic partner. He's fascinating that way. A whole thread could be done on it.
Pitt's best case for gay sainthood was his ASS. The best little hard white boy ass around. Tiny and round, all muscled and perfect. AND his smooth yellow skin of course...

by Anonymous | reply 81 | February 6, 2020 3:39 AM |
It's obvious R81. Brad is a white man with yellow skin. He's a yellowbone. It is not that rare, but he is such a good example. Most yellowbones are mixed race or light skinned black people with yellow skin tones. Lil Wayne paid homage to Yellow Bones and Beyonce did too in song lyrics. Beyonce grew up being called a yellowbone or redbone. To go too far with it would be racist. But Brad, like a few other male celebrities is a famous yellowbone. I agree with this. Brad Pitt has made really intriguing choices with so many of his roles from early on and he has never been given due credit. People will always dismiss him but I’ll always be impressed with many of his performances and even more with the roles he has taken on:
—A River Runs Through It
—Kalifornia
—Interview with the Vampire
—Seven
—Legends of the Fall
—The Devil’s Own
—Seven Years in Tibet
—Meet Joe Black
—Fight Club
—Being John Malkovich
—Troy
—Mr. and Mrs. Smith
—Babel
—Inglorious Basterds
—Benjamin Button
—Ad Astra
He so easily could have taken on easy big box-office action and romantic comedy roles only but he has done so many really interesting things.

Pitt showed some comedic flair in "True Romance" as Floyd, the stoned, pot smoking roommate to the character of Dick, the role Michael Rapoport was playing.

by Anonymous | reply 107 | February 17, 2020 4:24 AM |
Again, winning a PR fight serves no purpose if your kids hate you. This isn’t high school where being popular matters. And even having said that, Jolie will never lack for attention or be shunned or disinvited from events she wants to attend. It’s well known she’s antisocial by nature so that’s her choice.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | February 17, 2020 4:32 AM |
It serves a purpose if the person you won it against is in a PR-reliant industry that you now own.
As for kids hating - meh. Teenagers are teenagers. They don't hate their father.
If Maddox is all Oedipal, what can one do? She adopted him alone before she knew Brad, of course he was terribly jealous and will probably stay that way. It pleases his awful mother because with her it's all about her.
With the rest, it's widely known that a parent who tries to turn kids against the other parent will eventually lose. Children aren't stupid. Jolie's a crazy cunt and her parental alienation shtick will blow up in her face, just as her campaign against Pitt blew up in her face. She has no education and she's not that bright so it's no surprise that she's lost.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | February 17, 2020 4:57 AM |

As opposed to brain trust Brad "I dropped out of college 2 hours shy of graduation" Pitt? Although I agree with you on this, unfortunately, Jolie will get the red carpet rolled out by the UN and rub shoulders with Secretary Generals and Ambassadors, allegedly helping to solve the world's refugee problems, whenever she steps out from whichever cave she hides. Pitt, meanwhile, has long given up trying to convince the world that he's somehow an expert on architecture and now the main news wil always l be if he was at the same party with Anniston and how long they spoke. I'd rather be Jolie in this case.
