It's always been this way. Look at portraits from any era in history, or at least women's portraits, and they all look oddly similar. That's because the portraitist gave them whatever figure or features were in fashion at the time - the weirdly high foreheads that were fashionable in the middle ages, the tiny mouths of the 19th century, whatever.
The only thing new about this process, OP, is the photoshop.
