In which Megyn Kelly tries to cancel Robert Downey Jr for wearing blackface in "Tropic Thunder"

I guess she's trying to rebrand herself as "woke" now. She's even doing the hand-clapping thing in her tweets.

Megyn Kelly @megynkelly R. Downey Jr: wears blackface for Universal w/o regret bc it “sparked a necessary convo.” Univer.: yay Robert! 👏🏻

Me: Never worn blackface but had one of those “necessary convos” re how standard seems to have changed over time.NBC-Univer: F.U.! Cancelled!

Not a fan of Kelly but she's absolutely right to point out their hypocrisy.

by Anonymousreply 1January 23, 2020 7:35 PM

He wore blackface to point out how ridiculously obscene it is. She does half the shit she does without a clue. Not the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 2January 23, 2020 7:56 PM

The fact that this incident inspired so much discussion proves her point that this was indeed a worthy subject of debate, similar to how people discuss the political correctness of movies made after 2010. Her point was that the intention matters and that paying homage is different than mocking someone for their race. That's why Billy Crystal doing Sammy Davis is OK while Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman doing it were not. Of course, you can't expect Twitter to express any kind of nuanced thinking.

by Anonymousreply 3January 23, 2020 7:58 PM

r1 it's not hypocrisy when it's in context.

by Anonymousreply 4January 23, 2020 8:04 PM

R3 She also invited people who disagreed with her and who understood the premise who pretended to be outraged when this story made the news cycle.

by Anonymousreply 5January 23, 2020 8:07 PM

She got her squinty little ferret face viciously slapped on Twitter for spectacularly missing the point of that character.

by Anonymousreply 6January 23, 2020 10:18 PM

Never forget that tor these Right Wing Wackjobs:

1.Everything is about them. Everything.

2. They are always the victim. Always.

by Anonymousreply 7January 23, 2020 10:20 PM

Some of the comments are wonderful....

Did you see Tropic Thunder? His character was a parody of an idiotic, egomaniacal actor who thought he was making some kind of deep point. In other words, his character was a parody of people like you.

Are you still fucking going on about this? Does it really bother you that much that white people can't still smear cork all over their faces for humor?

Megyn get off the cross we need the wood!

by Anonymousreply 8January 23, 2020 10:30 PM

Yes, the Jesus-is-white lady is really woke on racial issues. I wish this rancid bitch would disappear.

by Anonymousreply 9January 23, 2020 10:40 PM

Oh... and Santa Claus. He's white too according to Megyn.

by Anonymousreply 10January 23, 2020 10:40 PM

Well, she is right about Santa.

by Anonymousreply 11January 23, 2020 10:44 PM

She was one of the first on Fox to turn against Trump, so I’m not sure why liberals hate her so much.

by Anonymousreply 12January 23, 2020 10:46 PM

The difference, Megyn, is that America likes RDJ. They don’t like you.

by Anonymousreply 13January 23, 2020 10:52 PM

R12, and then she got an interview with him and completely kissed his ass.

by Anonymousreply 14January 23, 2020 11:03 PM

R6 The whole point was that there didn't have to be a point. People said it was not OK for a white person to impersonate a black person under any circumstances regardless of the intention. Also any white person is not allowed to have any opinion on the matter.

by Anonymousreply 15January 23, 2020 11:06 PM

Do she remind anyone else of a porn chick like she does me? Kinda that hard look those chicks often have.

by Anonymousreply 16January 23, 2020 11:58 PM

R16, welcome to the world of Fox news chicks. Hired exclusively for their looks, never their brains.

by Anonymousreply 17January 24, 2020 12:02 AM

She's trying (and failing) to create a new image for her, to get "The Blacks" (as she likely calls them in private) on her side. She tried to do that with #metoo earlier.

I'm thinking she's being a wee bit disingenuous here.

by Anonymousreply 18January 24, 2020 12:47 AM

Megyn Kelly is a cunt bump!

by Anonymousreply 19January 25, 2020 8:08 PM

Watched a repeat of Maher's show originally aired last night. His opening monologue was even more lame than usual. Then he brought out cuntess supreme MK. I immediately switched to another channel.

by Anonymousreply 20January 25, 2020 8:12 PM

Slut!

by Anonymousreply 21January 28, 2020 6:00 PM

Why is she bringing this back up into the news cycle? You'd think she would want everyone to forget about it and never talk about it again.

by Anonymousreply 22January 28, 2020 6:08 PM

Remember when PA Ingalls dressed up like a Darkie? I had no idea what the hell they were talking about when I read this in third grade.

God, our third grade teacher had us read this book as assigned reading. I remember there were a few black kids who were in our class. I wonder how it made them feel? Maybe they had no idea either, because we were kids.

Interesting that a black doctor delivered Laura Ingalls at birth.

They should have put Dr. Tann in Little House on the Prairie. He was there. He was also their doctor.

She’s Irrelevant, and that probably bugs her the most

by Anonymousreply 25January 28, 2020 7:41 PM

She's right. It's hypocritical how he gets a pass for blackface, no matter what the purpose of it was, and others don't. And let's be real, if he wasn't Iron Man I doubt his actions would be defended.

by Anonymousreply 26January 28, 2020 8:04 PM

She has a habit of starting shit when things don't go her way--remember when she pissed off Jane Fonda by asking her about her plastic surgery? When Jane discussed how inappropriate Megyn's question was with others, Megyn got pissed and brought up the whole Hanoi Jane on the Today show. It was really desperate, especially since the whole situation is irrelevant to her inappropriate question.

by Anonymousreply 27January 28, 2020 8:17 PM

R27 Megyn needs to look at her freakishly proportioned unnatural nose before she asks anyone about plastic surgery. Glass houses and all that .....

by Anonymousreply 28January 28, 2020 8:21 PM

Charlize actually played her better in "Monster".

by Anonymousreply 29January 28, 2020 8:27 PM

r28, right? Jane actually looks great. Megyn? Meh.

by Anonymousreply 30January 28, 2020 8:30 PM

r26 You can't completely ignore context and be a scold. It's appealing to low-information people who are basically "insert coin get prize" outrage.

by Anonymousreply 31January 28, 2020 10:41 PM

Megyn gets a pass because she isn't the one who manufactured outrage. It was her bosses who were looking for any excuse to get rid of her. That's fine, but they didn't need to defame her in the process. And no one's buying the fake outrage, including from those who actually sat at her panel and appeared to have a civilized dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 32January 31, 2020 9:05 PM

Al Roker threw her under the bus in the same way he accused Matt Lauer of throwing Ann Curry under the bus. Nobody at NBC had the cajon's to defend her for basically just having a debate on the air about what's appropriate for Halloween costumes. She wasn't defending blackface so much as talking about wearing makeup to play someone that you are a fan of.

by Anonymousreply 33January 31, 2020 9:14 PM

She was one of the only decent ones on the air at Fox News.

by Anonymousreply 34January 31, 2020 10:41 PM

R34, I thought that too until I saw a compilation video of her arguing about Santa being white and getting VERY defensive about it. That's when I realized she's no different from the typical Fox News chick--all looks, no brains.

by Anonymousreply 35January 31, 2020 10:44 PM

Santa, aka Saint Nicholas, was a white man.

Megyn was just trying to point out the truth.

by Anonymousreply 36January 31, 2020 10:49 PM

When did the DL get overrun by so many right wing trolls?

by Anonymousreply 37January 31, 2020 10:50 PM

[quote]That's when I realized she's no different from the typical Fox News chick--all looks, no brains.

She’s a law school graduate and practiced law for ten years. To say she has “no brains” is typical left-wing bias.

by Anonymousreply 38January 31, 2020 10:52 PM

R38, you're right, my bad--she's just a moron.

by Anonymousreply 39January 31, 2020 10:55 PM

She’s not “just a moron”. She called out Trump early, in 2015, for being a misogynist.

by Anonymousreply 40January 31, 2020 10:58 PM

So why does she seem so insufferable

by Anonymousreply 41February 1, 2020 1:00 AM

R40, and then bent over and kissed his ass when given the chance to interview him.

by Anonymousreply 42February 1, 2020 1:02 AM

R31 I'm not ignoring the context, I just think that using "we're making fun of racists" as an excuse for wearing blackface is a crappy excuse and that if RDJ were anybody other than RDJ, or even if this had happened before he got the Iron Man role, he would be getting a shit-ton of heat. He's escaping cancel culture's grip because he's Iron Man.

by Anonymousreply 43February 1, 2020 1:45 AM

It's funny in context and it's ridiculous and overly Woke to be complaining and saying it's racist when it is INTENDED to be racist. That's the joke.

It has nothing to do with RDJ, it happened before Cancel Culture was as powerful as it is.

And its power is dwindling, too. Overreach has caused apathy and it's reversing into outright rebellion. Your complaint is just a part of that which is being pushed back on.

by Anonymousreply 44February 1, 2020 1:52 AM

R44 I hate cancel culture and honestly don't give a shit that he did blackface, I just think it's a bit hypocritical that he hasn't been called out for it like others have. If somebody like John Mulaney (who would never wear blackface i'm just using him as an example) were to wear blackface for that exact same reason in a movie, he'd be cancelled. You can't deny that RDJ being so beloved for being the star of Marvel is preventing him from being cancelled as others would be.

by Anonymousreply 45February 1, 2020 2:11 AM

r45 so your reason for being upset that cancel culture didn't call him out is because others have been called out for it? Sort of like justifying keeping a losing war going because "otherwise the previous soldiers would have died in vain"

If RDJ is so untouchable and beloved, why did Doctor Dolittle bomb?

He was good as Iron Man, but another actor could have handled it, too.

You seem to be grasping to find a reason why he wasn't cancelled for it. It could be because most people know the context.

by Anonymousreply 46February 1, 2020 2:20 AM

R46 Ridiculous of you to bring up Doolittle as an argument for him not being untouchable. Of course Doolittle fucking bombed, anybody with half a brain knows that an actor can't save a shitty film from tanking. I guarantee you that the only people that did see it, however, saw it because RDJ was in it.

You know what? I'm not even going to waste my time arguing my case. If you argue over an idol with one of their fangirls you're never going to get them to see your point of view, so what's the point?

by Anonymousreply 47February 1, 2020 2:44 AM

This is a very timely feud.

by Anonymousreply 48February 1, 2020 2:47 AM

r47 he got panned for his acting in Dolittle too.

I'm sorry that you feel you can't argue your case. You're clearly wrong, but too hardheaded to admit your opinion is just pulled out of your ass based on your own prejudices.

by Anonymousreply 49February 1, 2020 2:51 AM

R49 RDJ's career will be just fine after Doolittle. He's in the same class of people like Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling who get paid millions despite being in countless flops. Jim Carrey too. Even those Marvel movies keep making money if though a lot of them suck.

by Anonymousreply 50February 1, 2020 3:11 AM

If i recall correctly, the character in tropic thunder took something to darken his skin from the inside out, so technically he wasn't actually wearing blackface...

by Anonymousreply 51February 1, 2020 3:36 AM

R51 The character is not Robert Downey Jr, who did actual blackface.

by Anonymousreply 52February 1, 2020 3:39 AM

I thought that she signed an NDA where she couldn't discuss her time at NBC.

by Anonymousreply 53February 1, 2020 4:35 AM

This bitch is filthy rich, and she's still not happy.

Typical white bitch.

by Anonymousreply 54February 1, 2020 4:36 AM

How do we know she's not happy? She seems pretty happy to me considering everything. ☺

by Anonymousreply 55February 1, 2020 6:49 PM

If she was happy, she wouldn't be bringing up RDJ and her whataboutism she loves pushing.

by Anonymousreply 56February 1, 2020 7:19 PM

She and Bill O’Reilly had it all when they were on Fox News, and now they’ve both lost everything. Greta van Susteren too.

by Anonymousreply 57February 1, 2020 9:43 PM

R57 ,what happened to Greta? I thought she was actually pretty liberal.

by Anonymousreply 58February 1, 2020 9:54 PM

R58, she went to MSNBC, and they abruptly fired her after about six months.

by Anonymousreply 59February 1, 2020 9:56 PM

R59, damn, what was the reason?

by Anonymousreply 60February 2, 2020 4:01 PM

She's definitely not happy, she wants the power and fame. She has the money.

Her attempts to break back into her own show from outside are NOT working. She isn't going to get a ridiculous contract like she had on her last network since they have shown she isn't appealing to viewers. So she is falling back on her old FOX-news tactics of being as divisive as hell and trying to glom onto "woke" movements to appeal to people too young to remember her horrible tenure on FOX and her general personality.

by Anonymousreply 61February 2, 2020 4:56 PM

She's been trying to glom on to #metoo since it became popular (also because she wants to cancel some people and get revenge) but no one trusts her and she seems disingenuous when she tries.

by Anonymousreply 62February 2, 2020 4:56 PM

[quote]Remember when PA Ingalls dressed up like a Darkie? I had no idea what the hell they were talking about when I read this in third grade.

I didn’t either but the drawing scared the crap out of me.

by Anonymousreply 63February 2, 2020 5:23 PM

“Is not allowed,” R15. What a hoot!

by Anonymousreply 64February 2, 2020 5:25 PM

[quote]to appeal to people too young to remember her horrible tenure on FOX and her general personality.

She was pretty popular and respected during her tenure at FOX. Until she went after Trump, and then the Deplorables turned on her. That audience will never watch anything with her again.

by Anonymousreply 65February 2, 2020 6:25 PM

All useless news whores should be cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 66February 2, 2020 6:32 PM

Megyn Kelly has been appropriating Nanette Fabray with that hideous nose job.

by Anonymousreply 67February 2, 2020 6:47 PM

All that bitch has now is money and fading glory.

Fuck Megyn Kelly. She's nothing but racist Irish trash.

by Anonymousreply 68February 2, 2020 6:58 PM

[quote] She's been trying to glom on to #metoo since it became popular (also because she wants to cancel some people and get revenge) but no one trusts her and she seems disingenuous when she tries.

It's not like she jumped on the metoo bandwagon. The Fox news scandal had been brewing for years. If anything, her NBC bosses, who had their own hands dirty, were trying to cancel her and the overly woke lemmings ate it up.

by Anonymousreply 69February 2, 2020 7:23 PM

R69 It's also worth noting she wasn't trying to throw anyone under the bus while she was working for NBC. At the time, she was merely covering it as it was newsworthy.

by Anonymousreply 70February 2, 2020 7:28 PM

She’s problematic, but so is NBC.

by Anonymousreply 71February 2, 2020 9:30 PM

Is "respected" by Deplorables actual "respect", though?

by Anonymousreply 72February 2, 2020 10:30 PM

r70 are you insane? She glommed onto #metoo like it was the last donut at a Weight Watcher's afterparty. She'd previously shown no real inclinations towards feminism other than callous lip service.

She's just a hack.

by Anonymousreply 73February 2, 2020 10:31 PM

R73 My point was that she had some cachet on this topic since she was very public about her troubles with Fox. The story which Bombshell is based on predated the whole Metoo thing. In addition to that, she was also was publicly humiliated by Trump. She had an opening and she used in the wake of metoo to discuss industry wide abuse in Hollywood and the media. Her NBC bosses didn't like it and hoped the public would look past their own dealing with Weinstein and Matt Lauer if they used their hypocritical wokeness to publicly defame her. Of course, everyone dogpiled on her and are offended at her for giving her opinion. I'd be pretty pissed too.

by Anonymousreply 74February 2, 2020 10:43 PM

r74 that's certainly one way to look at it.

by Anonymousreply 75February 2, 2020 10:46 PM

I thought she was likable as portrayed in Bombshell, but seeing her in real life I feel as though she's damaged goods, without a clear purpose.

by Anonymousreply 76February 2, 2020 10:53 PM

Theres nothing innocent about Megyn Kelly. She is not a sympathetic victim what so ever. She's been apart of the division in America for the last decade +, I feel nothing for her.

She's a rich white woman who only cares about herself and her own grievances.

Once again, fuck Megyn Kelly.

by Anonymousreply 77February 2, 2020 10:54 PM

[quote]I thought she was likable as portrayed in Bombshell, but seeing her in real life I feel as though she's damaged goods, without a clear purpose.

Well, she has no career anymore...so it’s true that she doesn’t have a clear purpose.

by Anonymousreply 78February 2, 2020 11:31 PM

Megyn's purpose is to warn people of the dangers of excessive nose jobs.

by Anonymousreply 79February 3, 2020 12:35 AM

The blackface thing I can debate but I don't understand what she got out of standing firm in letting black kids know that Santa Claus is white. Even if you believe it's true, what do you get out of proudly letting black people know this?

by Anonymousreply 80February 3, 2020 1:16 AM

r80 because she's a Republican at heart, that's why she was on FOX for so long. With that comes casual racism.

I haven't seen Bombshell but I've seen some of her interviews and her Twitter posts and the comments she's made over the years. She's calculated and cunning. Not genuine, much like her nose.

by Anonymousreply 81February 3, 2020 2:06 AM

That cunt needs to be torn apart by a billion jackals. Downey never wore blackface. He portrayed a black man perfectly and hilariously.

by Anonymousreply 82February 3, 2020 2:09 AM

[quote] Downey never wore blackface. He portrayed a black man perfectly and hilariously.

You must be joking.

by Anonymousreply 83February 3, 2020 5:29 AM

I think what r82 is trying to say is that there's a black man in all of us.

by Anonymousreply 84February 3, 2020 7:20 PM

PC police can suck on a huge black dick and die.

by Anonymousreply 85February 3, 2020 8:19 PM

R84 Until shit gets to real. Then you wanna go running your asses right back to the safety of the upscale suburbs, where the police patrols and keep out all of the undesirables.

AKA, Redlining.

by Anonymousreply 86February 4, 2020 12:42 AM

I think what r86 is trying to say is that there is no such thing as a black man, only men.
