In which Megyn Kelly tries to cancel Robert Downey Jr for wearing blackface in "Tropic Thunder"
I guess she's trying to rebrand herself as "woke" now. She's even doing the hand-clapping thing in her tweets.
Megyn Kelly @megynkelly R. Downey Jr: wears blackface for Universal w/o regret bc it “sparked a necessary convo.” Univer.: yay Robert! 👏🏻
Me: Never worn blackface but had one of those “necessary convos” re how standard seems to have changed over time.NBC-Univer: F.U.! Cancelled!

Not a fan of Kelly but she's absolutely right to point out their hypocrisy.

He wore blackface to point out how ridiculously obscene it is. She does half the shit she does without a clue. Not the same thing.

The fact that this incident inspired so much discussion proves her point that this was indeed a worthy subject of debate, similar to how people discuss the political correctness of movies made after 2010. Her point was that the intention matters and that paying homage is different than mocking someone for their race. That's why Billy Crystal doing Sammy Davis is OK while Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman doing it were not. Of course, you can't expect Twitter to express any kind of nuanced thinking.

Some of the comments are wonderful....
Did you see Tropic Thunder? His character was a parody of an idiotic, egomaniacal actor who thought he was making some kind of deep point. In other words, his character was a parody of people like you.
Are you still fucking going on about this? Does it really bother you that much that white people can't still smear cork all over their faces for humor?
Megyn get off the cross we need the wood!

R6 The whole point was that there didn't have to be a point. People said it was not OK for a white person to impersonate a black person under any circumstances regardless of the intention. Also any white person is not allowed to have any opinion on the matter.

She's trying (and failing) to create a new image for her, to get "The Blacks" (as she likely calls them in private) on her side. She tried to do that with #metoo earlier.
I'm thinking she's being a wee bit disingenuous here.

Remember when PA Ingalls dressed up like a Darkie? I had no idea what the hell they were talking about when I read this in third grade.
God, our third grade teacher had us read this book as assigned reading. I remember there were a few black kids who were in our class. I wonder how it made them feel? Maybe they had no idea either, because we were kids.
Interesting that a black doctor delivered Laura Ingalls at birth.

She's right. It's hypocritical how he gets a pass for blackface, no matter what the purpose of it was, and others don't. And let's be real, if he wasn't Iron Man I doubt his actions would be defended.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 28, 2020 8:04 PM

She has a habit of starting shit when things don't go her way--remember when she pissed off Jane Fonda by asking her about her plastic surgery? When Jane discussed how inappropriate Megyn's question was with others, Megyn got pissed and brought up the whole Hanoi Jane on the Today show. It was really desperate, especially since the whole situation is irrelevant to her inappropriate question.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 28, 2020 8:17 PM

R27 Megyn needs to look at her freakishly proportioned unnatural nose before she asks anyone about plastic surgery. Glass houses and all that .....

r26 You can't completely ignore context and be a scold. It's appealing to low-information people who are basically "insert coin get prize" outrage.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 28, 2020 10:41 PM
|
Megyn gets a pass because she isn't the one who manufactured outrage. It was her bosses who were looking for any excuse to get rid of her. That's fine, but they didn't need to defame her in the process. And no one's buying the fake outrage, including from those who actually sat at her panel and appeared to have a civilized dialogue.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 31, 2020 9:05 PM

Al Roker threw her under the bus in the same way he accused Matt Lauer of throwing Ann Curry under the bus. Nobody at NBC had the cajon's to defend her for basically just having a debate on the air about what's appropriate for Halloween costumes. She wasn't defending blackface so much as talking about wearing makeup to play someone that you are a fan of.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 1, 2020 1:02 AM

R31 I'm not ignoring the context, I just think that using "we're making fun of racists" as an excuse for wearing blackface is a crappy excuse and that if RDJ were anybody other than RDJ, or even if this had happened before he got the Iron Man role, he would be getting a shit-ton of heat. He's escaping cancel culture's grip because he's Iron Man.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 1, 2020 1:45 AM
|
It's funny in context and it's ridiculous and overly Woke to be complaining and saying it's racist when it is INTENDED to be racist. That's the joke.
It has nothing to do with RDJ, it happened before Cancel Culture was as powerful as it is.
And its power is dwindling, too. Overreach has caused apathy and it's reversing into outright rebellion. Your complaint is just a part of that which is being pushed back on.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 1, 2020 1:52 AM
|
R44 I hate cancel culture and honestly don't give a shit that he did blackface, I just think it's a bit hypocritical that he hasn't been called out for it like others have. If somebody like John Mulaney (who would never wear blackface i'm just using him as an example) were to wear blackface for that exact same reason in a movie, he'd be cancelled. You can't deny that RDJ being so beloved for being the star of Marvel is preventing him from being cancelled as others would be.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 1, 2020 2:11 AM
|
r45 so your reason for being upset that cancel culture didn't call him out is because others have been called out for it? Sort of like justifying keeping a losing war going because "otherwise the previous soldiers would have died in vain"
If RDJ is so untouchable and beloved, why did Doctor Dolittle bomb?
He was good as Iron Man, but another actor could have handled it, too.
You seem to be grasping to find a reason why he wasn't cancelled for it. It could be because most people know the context.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 1, 2020 2:20 AM
|
R46 Ridiculous of you to bring up Doolittle as an argument for him not being untouchable. Of course Doolittle fucking bombed, anybody with half a brain knows that an actor can't save a shitty film from tanking. I guarantee you that the only people that did see it, however, saw it because RDJ was in it.
You know what? I'm not even going to waste my time arguing my case. If you argue over an idol with one of their fangirls you're never going to get them to see your point of view, so what's the point?

R49 RDJ's career will be just fine after Doolittle. He's in the same class of people like Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling who get paid millions despite being in countless flops. Jim Carrey too. Even those Marvel movies keep making money if though a lot of them suck.

She's definitely not happy, she wants the power and fame. She has the money.
Her attempts to break back into her own show from outside are NOT working. She isn't going to get a ridiculous contract like she had on her last network since they have shown she isn't appealing to viewers. So she is falling back on her old FOX-news tactics of being as divisive as hell and trying to glom onto "woke" movements to appeal to people too young to remember her horrible tenure on FOX and her general personality.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 2, 2020 4:56 PM

It's not like she jumped on the metoo bandwagon. The Fox news scandal had been brewing for years. If anything, her NBC bosses, who had their own hands dirty, were trying to cancel her and the overly woke lemmings ate it up.

R73 My point was that she had some cachet on this topic since she was very public about her troubles with Fox. The story which Bombshell is based on predated the whole Metoo thing. In addition to that, she was also was publicly humiliated by Trump. She had an opening and she used in the wake of metoo to discuss industry wide abuse in Hollywood and the media. Her NBC bosses didn't like it and hoped the public would look past their own dealing with Weinstein and Matt Lauer if they used their hypocritical wokeness to publicly defame her. Of course, everyone dogpiled on her and are offended at her for giving her opinion. I'd be pretty pissed too.
