BUT the statistic about mentally ill people being victims of violence does not show the reality that this video shows: mentally ill people of the sort we see here can provoke violence by behaving aggressively in such a way that upsets or even scares people, and some people react to the perceived threats with violence.

Sorry. In the subset of people who commit violent acts with guns, mental illness most certainly is a factor. I am speaking from personal experience with a family member. A significant history of domestic violence, threats of violence, or violent ideation by mental health patients must absolutely preclude gun ownership until professionals give the 'all clear.'

When I was in nursing school we still had state psych hospitals. Someone like her would be locked up her whole life. She could get a weekend pass to visit family, but straight back on Sunday night or the cops would be called to go find her.

But it was state run, meaning it was socialized medicine. So it had to be dismantled.
