Phrases white people stole from black people

"Don't go there"; "Hunty, no"; "Girlfriend"; "Bitch, please"; "Throw it down"; "Talk to the hand"; "A little sumpin'-sumpin"; "Hey, ho"; "Have a blessed day"; "Get your freak on"...

You mean copied because it was so good. Not stolen. Stolen means taken away. Nothing was taken away. Only copied because imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Which is a good thing. You want cultures, races, humans to coexist and not try to stamp each other out of existence. Blending of cultures is a good thing.

by Anonymousreply 3December 28, 2019 1:25 AM

You can have them back, black people.

by Anonymousreply 8December 28, 2019 1:35 AM

Borrowing isn't stealing, stupid ass OP.

Black people still have their phrases, and white people's vocabulary is enriched with their contribution.

by Anonymousreply 9December 28, 2019 1:35 AM

Black people always used to say, "I'm in the house" instead of "I'm here." But then white people all started to say "in the house" so we switched it to "in the hizzouse." Hizzouse became hizzizzouse, and then white folk started saying that, and we had to change it to hizzie, then "in the hizzle" which we had to change to "hizzle fo shizzle," and now, because white people say "hizzle fo shizzle," we have to say "flippity floppity floop."

by Anonymousreply 10December 28, 2019 1:36 AM

instead of "where do you live?" it's " where you stay at"

by Anonymousreply 14December 28, 2019 1:41 AM

You could also say English is a language that has stolen words or phrases from just about every language on earth.

It's voracious.

by Anonymousreply 15December 28, 2019 1:41 AM

R13 exactly. Humans are the same. Neat, isn't it?

Cross culture hugs and kisses and love and we're all the same because we die and go back to the heaven and see the human just a roulette wheel of colors and kinda the same ain't nothing like an alien in another Galaxy oh boo no no we're just human human humaaaan were not wookies or sand people or lt. Worf or a romulan or a kardashian oh no we're human not humalog diabetic medication and you can me because I need it bye I'm getting banned for not using a period but it's fine love to you a TCM movie with Bette Davis is coming on on on. These damn racist questions make me crazy so that's what you get I'm a just a human baby but maybe in my next life I can be a alien and won't have to deal with all this shit of earth ohh I hope so hope there's something better out there in all those stars

by Anonymousreply 18December 28, 2019 1:51 AM

R15, English is so rich because foreign words are readily absorbed as needed. Also, it has an inherent flexibility that many languages don't have. I was talking to a Dutch friend and I made up a word by adding some endings to it. She said doing so was just not possible in Dutch or wouldn't make sense. I don't know how true that is.

by Anonymousreply 19December 28, 2019 1:51 AM

"Back in the day" instead of "back then" or "back in those days."

R204 is the usual Frau who wades into the DL, slips into the deep end and thrashes about trying to play the "reasonable scold" saying inane truths that no one denies while getting her frosty perm wet.

There are a few true racists who slide into these threads to take their nasty crap, yes. But the intruding Frauen who cannot discern the differences among social commentary, parody, accurate observation, cutting humor and parodic tropes ought not attempt to inform the community that "black people have a vibrant culture" and "white people are a mess too, just like black people."

Such comments exhibit more underlying racism than do 95% of what appears here.

This is silliness.

Americans typically have 1/3 to 1/2 the vocabulary of Brits, with Australia being close to the UK in the median number of words in active vocabulary.

While the average American has a vocabulary of under 20,000 words - the teens through 30s subset has an active vocabulary *half* that of people who are in their 50s and 60s. You can blame poor reading skills and infrequent exposure to challenging vocabulary as the culprits. Translation: you're watching too much crap TV instead of reading books.

While immigrants frequently have a lower English vocabulary, Americans adopt far more words - especially in Spanish - than other English speaking countries. Yet, immigrants acquire a working vocabulary of 9,000 words. Americans are simply intellectually lazy.

"Stole"?

Language cannot be owned.

by Anonymousreply 370February 19, 2020 2:00 AM

Look at it this way - Black culture has always created the new and different. Be it music, dancing, language phrases, etc.

There are 2 things at play:

1) when something new happens - people pay attention and wonder what it is all about. Then they start to hear or see it and they want to understand what it is. People want new things and ways of communicating.

2) if it weren't for things becoming commonplace, then new phrases and other things would stop. Things being 'stolen' forces new ideas.

Now there's a whole other thread as to why is it that the Black community is so creative - but that's a different thread.

by Anonymousreply 371February 19, 2020 3:02 AM

Recently Kwamé Anthony Appiah, the black professor of philosophy at NYU, wrote in the NYTimes that complaining about culture being appropriated means that you believe culture can be somehow [italic]owned[/italic]--a bizarre capitalistic fantasy that could only occur in this age of neoliberalism.
