She's known here in the U.S. Only for the Bond songs, though. So, yes, she's mainly a British thing.

She was amazing on the Academy Awards a few years ago when she sang Goldfinger during the Bond tribute. Hit and held every note - at 80! Poor Adele had to follow her with Skyfall.

She was superb at the Oscars, imperious and totally over the top. She got a standing ovation in our living room.

Hard to believe she was pushing 80 and turning up the volume from her original version half a century earlier.

Genève, Lugano, The Lido, Marbella, Monte Carlo. She knew how to glitter.

No real vocal control and a vibrato you could steer a supertanker through.

But she could/can put on a kind of "class" look. And she has a certain attitude. And sense of humor.

If you enjoy her, wonderful. I can see why people might. There's something about her voice and phrasing that just so doesn't work for me. History Repeating Herself was the only song I even remotely liked, and mostly because of the music.

I remember telling years ago an Australian friend telling me she was huge there and I saw her on Graham Norton a year ago and she seemed a fabulous diva.

She ain't no Mamie Van Doren.

She looks good. A bit too theatrical. I imagine she's a cunt behind closed doors.

She is ab-fab fantastic. Her more recent album The Living Tree is the bomb!

Her life hasn't been all roses and champagne. Her daughter was found dead floating in the River Avon back in the 80s.

I think her and Tom Jones are two of the most exciting singers I have ever heard. Both are capable of torrents of sound!

R18, she completely blew Adele offstage. Adele was overpowered by the orchestra and you could barely hear her. Shirley Bassey THUNDERED over the orchestra and there was no question who was in charge. The fact that she is like 2.5x Adele's age is pretty embarrassing for Adele.

One of the greatest voices ever. (Yes I am Welsh). My favourite Bassey song.

What I find interesting about Shirley Bassey is that she invented a character for herself and stayed with it for the next 60 years. Her singing style never changed from "Goldfinger". Always glamorous, always giving audiences exactly what they expected of her. She never tried to go off in other directions. She really stuck to her brand.

Shirley Bassey was one of Aretha Franklin's favorite singers.
