Avocados

I know they are completely overtaken by hipsters but I love them. Besides avocado toast and guacamole, how else do you use them?

by Anonymousreply 62December 18, 2019 4:21 PM

Diced, in salads, with some accompanying crunch, like croutons or nuts. I like walnuts and pecans best.

by Anonymousreply 1December 12, 2019 8:11 PM

Avocado sliced on a cheeseburger. It balances the fats.

by Anonymousreply 2December 12, 2019 8:11 PM

I like to make avocado mayonnaise

by Anonymousreply 3December 12, 2019 8:14 PM

Guacamole!

by Anonymousreply 4December 12, 2019 8:18 PM

Before avocado on toast was hipster food, my godmother introduced me to it , she had been making it for years, with just mashed avocado, lemon juice, salt and pepper or seasoned salt and pepper, on regular toast, for breakfast. Love.

Eat half with a spoon, or top with seafood salad.

Asian avocado ice cream. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

by Anonymousreply 5December 12, 2019 8:21 PM

Dropping them on hipster's head as they pass by my apartment on the fourth floor. It helps loosen the shell so they can get their nuts out. Oh, I mean, the avocado's nut.

by Anonymousreply 6December 12, 2019 8:23 PM

R5, was your godmother a pre-Hipster?

by Anonymousreply 7December 12, 2019 8:25 PM

Really good on a BLT also known as a BLTA or drop the lettuce Bacon Avocado Tomato.

by Anonymousreply 8December 12, 2019 8:25 PM

Mom always served it sliced as a side. Sprinkle some salt and that's all you need.

by Anonymousreply 9December 12, 2019 8:28 PM

I had a really good salad once in Key West is some fancy restaurant with Avocados. Basically it was half an avocado sliced and fanned out, sprinkled with about a tablespoon of crumbled blue cheese, drizzled with olive oil and a splash of balsamic vinegar and pinch of salt and pepper. DELICIOUS! I still make this at home every once and a while. Just don't over do the blue cheese.

by Anonymousreply 10December 12, 2019 8:29 PM

Guacamole on a bacon cheese burger is also delicious. You need to salty bacon to pair with the avocado.

by Anonymousreply 11December 12, 2019 8:30 PM

on shrimp and radish soft tacos. mmmmm, mashed with a bit of lime and cayenne pepper powder

by Anonymousreply 12December 12, 2019 8:31 PM

The pits make excellent anal balls. No big deal if you lose one—they’re biodegradable.

by Anonymousreply 13December 12, 2019 8:32 PM

I shove them whole into my butt.

by Anonymousreply 14December 12, 2019 8:35 PM

They go great with almost any type of Mexican food.

by Anonymousreply 15December 12, 2019 8:42 PM

An avocado plain is delicious.

Someone mentioned avocado mayo - I add sour cream, mayo and a little lemon juice and it's delicious.

by Anonymousreply 16December 12, 2019 9:04 PM

R8, I call that sandwich a BLAT because it's a funny sound.

Avocados make good fudge because of the creamy factor. There are several recipes on-line, don't remember which one I tried several years ago but it was good.

by Anonymousreply 17December 12, 2019 9:28 PM

Avocado slices, lightly salted, and a scoop of cottage cheese makes a wonderful pairing.

Avocado slices or chunks are a dynamite garnish for tortilla soup.

by Anonymousreply 18December 12, 2019 9:34 PM

[quote]A scoop of cottage cheese looks just like white vomit.

Fixed.

by Anonymousreply 19December 12, 2019 9:42 PM

Actually it looks like exactly what it is....a scoop of cottage cheese. Vomit is not white. But you knew that.

by Anonymousreply 20December 12, 2019 10:51 PM

If you ever make spicy chicken soup, a.k.a. "tortilla soup", float some diced avocados on top! Wonderful addition and balances out the spiciness.

So I'm doing a few weeks of carblessness between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and am eating eggs with veg for breakfast. Yesterday it was an avocado-parmesean omelette, which FYI is a great combination, today it was a spinach-onion scramble topped with pico de gallo AND a slice of avocado! Mmmm…. dieting....

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2019 11:03 PM

I eat them on any style street tacos.....Hell, I can eat avocados on almost anything really. Just be sure to be generous with lemon juice and a sprinkle of salt.

by Anonymousreply 22December 12, 2019 11:09 PM

"I like to fuck 'em!"

by Anonymousreply 23December 12, 2019 11:15 PM

Mash half an avocado with some salt and pepper. Put on a rice cake with a slice or two of smoked salmon on top. A little sour cream and chives on top of that if you feel like getting fancy.

by Anonymousreply 24December 12, 2019 11:18 PM

Avocado is great on sandwiches be it turkey and swiss or a baconeggandcheese.

by Anonymousreply 25December 12, 2019 11:28 PM

In my family we had then as dessert, mashed with some sugar. In the school cafeteria they used to serve half avocados with a mix of tuna and mayo or shrimp and mayo in the middle. It was pretty good and I remember telling my mom about it, who was surprised that they could be used in a savory dish.

by Anonymousreply 26December 12, 2019 11:32 PM

I like them sliced with scrambled eggs, toast and potatoes for a high-fat weekend breakfast. Avocados and eggs go well together.

by Anonymousreply 27December 12, 2019 11:33 PM

A spicy banh mi with an avocado shake = heaven.

by Anonymousreply 28December 12, 2019 11:36 PM

R28, I have Filipino co-workers who love avocado as a dessert!😱 I've tried it, but can't get into it.

by Anonymousreply 29December 12, 2019 11:42 PM

R7, My mother used to call avocado "poor man's butter." So ironic it's now hipster approved.

Love avocado salad dressing.

by Anonymousreply 30December 12, 2019 11:42 PM

Avocado and turkey sandwiches. Avocado and chicken salad sandwiches with the former substituting for high calorie mayonnaise.

by Anonymousreply 32December 13, 2019 12:14 AM

Lots of people here urging lemon juice with avocado, which I agree tastes good (and the citrus juice helps to keep the cut fruit from turning brown so fast when exposed to the air). But I think that lime juice tastes even better (and has the same effect as lemon juice does to delay oxidation) -- sprinkle a little smoked paprika on that too.

by Anonymousreply 33December 13, 2019 1:05 AM

Hate to be a downer, but the high profit margin for growing avocados is causing deforestation of pine forests in Mexico so there is a serious environmental impact to consuming this food.

by Anonymousreply 34December 13, 2019 1:19 AM

R34 is right. You should replace avocados with beef in your diet.

by Anonymousreply 35December 13, 2019 1:58 AM

Mix together half an avocado, quarter of a cup of oatmeal, teaspoon of honey, teaspoon of lemon and tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Smear it on your face for 20 minutes, it may burn a little.

Makes your skin look great!

by Anonymousreply 36December 13, 2019 2:03 AM

Avocados are my favorite fruit. Every Sunday my grandfather used to bring me an avocado pear hidden at the bottom of his briefcase under six soiled shirts and the Sunday comics. He taught me how to eat avocados by melting grape jelly and french dressing together in a saucepan and filling the cup of the pear with the garnet sauce.

by Anonymousreply 37December 13, 2019 2:03 AM

I like to lightly mash them and sprinkle with “Everything But The Bagel” seasoning from Trader Joe’s and sprinkle a little seasoned rice vinegar.

by Anonymousreply 38December 13, 2019 2:05 AM

Avocado ice cream. Yum!

by Anonymousreply 40December 13, 2019 9:24 AM

R33 Oh yes this is a great combination.

by Anonymousreply 41December 13, 2019 9:24 AM

R9 you should try avocado ice cream. It's great!

Avocado is great on grilled chicken sandwiches.

by Anonymousreply 43December 13, 2019 10:42 AM

Don't use lemon juice, use lime juice! LIME!

by Anonymousreply 44December 13, 2019 10:44 AM

Thanks for all these suggestions. I have avocado, lemon, and lime trees in my back yard, so I’m looking forward to trying some of these ideas out.

by Anonymousreply 45December 13, 2019 12:28 PM

avocado cream pie

by Anonymousreply 46December 13, 2019 12:40 PM

Eat them plain

by Anonymousreply 47December 13, 2019 12:58 PM

Little did I know that every time I ordered a side of guacamole or a California roll that I was eating something named after the male genitalia. The shape could have given it away, but then again, who would actually name a fruit after that?

While inspecting a nursing home, I ran into some Mexican CNAs in the break room. This is what they had for lunch. It was stupid easy, and when I did it at home, I was pleased with the result.

Mash an avocado. Add a can of drained tuna. Add lime juice, hot sauce. They added a bit of chopped onion. Smear on corn tostadas.

by Anonymousreply 51December 13, 2019 6:18 PM

I have an avocado tree I just eat them plain with salt and pepper, burritos, salads, chips whatever you want.

by Anonymousreply 52December 13, 2019 6:21 PM

Who puts hot sauce on tuna? Yech.

by Anonymousreply 53December 14, 2019 4:34 PM

R53, some people (like me) put hot sauce on everything. Try it, you might like it!

by Anonymousreply 54December 14, 2019 8:46 PM

The LA Times shared a holiday recipe that they called "Spicy Avocado Smash," which is basically mashed avocado, jalapeno, cilantro, lime juice, and pomegranate seeds.

So basically it's just guacamole with a fancy name!

by Anonymousreply 55December 17, 2019 10:24 PM

That's how you're supposed to eat them, OP. Anything else is just hipster nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 56December 17, 2019 10:26 PM

I like making pasta with avocado and Parmesan

by Anonymousreply 57December 17, 2019 10:40 PM

I have a pasta recipe where you just throw some diced avocado and lemon into the hot drained noodles, and it melts and forms a rich yet tangy sauce. Throw on some diced fresh veggies, like tomato, basil, and red onion, and you've got a fabulous vegetarian main dish. Sprinkle with parmesean unless you're vegan.

Actually, no need for the recipe. That's pretty much it.

by Anonymousreply 58December 17, 2019 10:44 PM

I like using slices on fajitas.

by Anonymousreply 59December 17, 2019 10:54 PM

My grocery store sometimes has 4 ripe avocados for $1.00 right when the store opens. I got lucky yesterday and so far I have eaten a whole avocado chopped into chunks into red pozole and avocados, sprinkled with salt and pepper, on toast for breakfast. Delicious, but I wouldn’t spend the normal price for 4 avocados.
