Can you change Alexa to respond to “Mother” instead?

I’d love to get angry and scream at her like Ripley in “Alien.”

If you can and some of you have, what did you change her name to?

You get to choose from Alexa, Computer, or Echo.

by Anonymousreply 1December 12, 2019 5:43 AM

That’s ridiculous. Why not whatever word you want?

by Anonymousreply 2December 12, 2019 12:18 PM

Well, I don't know -- ask Jeff Bezos!

by Anonymousreply 3December 12, 2019 12:21 PM

I call mine "Mama." Ish terrif!

by Anonymousreply 4December 12, 2019 12:27 PM

R1 So only the Star Trek fans will be happy?

by Anonymousreply 5December 12, 2019 1:41 PM

It's about marketing, R2. Like Pee Brain repeating and repeating "Witch hunt!" Eventually it becomes imprinted on their brains.

Computer says no.

Sorry, Mr Pence, but not at this time.

by Anonymousreply 8December 12, 2019 2:18 PM

I can sort of understand why. If people were able to give it any name, they’d really start seeing it as a person and develop weird bonds with it.

Although from a cynical (mercenary) point of view, wouldn’t they want people to become attached to their little spy gadget?

by Anonymousreply 9December 12, 2019 2:33 PM

Isn't that what they want though -- to have you bond with it?

I want to shout at the device "GODDAM YOU MOTHER!" and have the device understand and reply!

I thought it was MUTHR not Mother.

by Anonymousreply 11December 12, 2019 3:30 PM

How is that pronounced, MOO-turr?

by Anonymousreply 12December 12, 2019 3:32 PM

Microsoft has Cortana -- who comes from a video game that absolutely ripped off ALIEN + ALIENS.

That was one of SNL's best skits in a while R6, thanks for reminding me of it.

by Anonymousreply 15December 12, 2019 5:37 PM

I’m curious: can you change the voice to a man’s?

by Anonymousreply 16December 12, 2019 7:09 PM

No. Alexa's female. Not trans.

by Anonymousreply 17December 12, 2019 7:19 PM

I'd call it Garcia, so I could pretend to be a BAU agent like on The Criminal Minds Programme.

[quote]In the side menu, select Settings. Click on one of the devices under Alexa Devices to open the settings specific to that device. Beside Device name click Edit. Type in a new name and click Save Changes.

The Google home assistant will use a male voice if you prefer. It makes sense as people who have hearing disabilities have better luck with a deeper more resonant sound. I wish the Echo would allow a voice change and wake word of choice.

by Anonymousreply 20December 12, 2019 7:33 PM

I'd call it Tina as in "Tina, what's the temperature!"

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2019 7:34 PM

Siri, OTOH, does accents.

For English speaking Siri, you can get her to be British, Australian, South African or even Indian. (The Indian one is named "Britney" and asks you if you have the serial number handy before she starts talking to you.)

by Anonymousreply 22December 12, 2019 7:35 PM

I vote for Dorcas.

by Anonymousreply 23December 12, 2019 7:40 PM

How about "Stinky," OP?

by Anonymousreply 24December 12, 2019 11:13 PM

As a nickname for my penis? Love it!
