I need to get my mother some marijuana -- tips?
My mom lives in San Diego. I live in Florida and won't be back in California for several months so can't help her in person. She's been experiencing chronic knee pain. She recently got a steroids shot in the knee that has provided little relief and she's potentially eligible for a more effective treatment in 6-8 weeks. In the meantime, she gets loopy and sick from opioids (not to mention, not wanting to get dependent upon them) and higher-dosage OTC pain relief isn't doing enough. I was surprised to find that she was open to my suggestion to try some alternate treatments. I have zero experience with marijuana / cannabis (recreational or medicinal), so I don't know how to steer her. She's not going to want to smoke/vape, so it will be about oils, ingestibles, edibles for her.
Any thoughts on what she should do? Visit a dispensary? An "alternative medicine" practice? Are there certain strains, products, ingredients she should be looking for? Sorry if these are really obvious questions, but I'm totally inexperienced in this area, but want to get my mom some relief.

Kiva Chocolate Covered Blueberries. She should take only two at first then see how they hit her after 20 mins.

I thought ingestibles were plentiful in California.

Also, OP, if she goes into a dispensary, she will need her ID and cash. Most only take cash. The people who work there can and will help her. They are usually really knowledgeable about what strains are good for different needs.

Nobody needs marijuana unless a competent doctor prescribes it. Do MJ fans know the side effects? I was shocked when my specialist who prescribes posted them. They're freaking shocking. That stuff fries brains and damages lungs/causes bronchitis when it's smoked for starters. Everyone needs every intact brain cell. Weed fans are losers.

There are a ton of dispensaries in San Diego. The people that work there tend to be young but they are trained and I believe certified to identify what she needs.
Once she finds what she wants, she can set up delivery on a regular basis. It's all legal. Sounds like she needs some CBD oil for her knees. There are other options she can use where she won't get 'high', but some pain relief.
It's come a long way. It really is medicine for a lot of people. If she wants to go to a 'posh' one, March and Ash in Mission Valley may be a good start. Very boutique look and feel. It's the one I go to.

Thanks for the links, everyone. From what I"ve read thus far it looks like a strain like ACDC, which is super high in CBD and low in THC is what would be ideal for her.

OP - she'll probably want something she won't have to smoke. Look into the oils, resins, and edibles. Actually smoking pot is kind of old school.

R6 Medical treatment often involves a set of choices where one must weigh the information at hand and decide which treatment they want to receive. An argument could readily be made by a marijuana advocate that cannibis in its forms as r9 noted, poses a lower risk and is a more natural approach than various chemical elixirs cooked up by some underregulated for-profit international pharmaceutical conglomerate and rolled out to the market with inadequate or even falsified study results and little information concerning long term affects.

Yes, R9, I agree. She'll definitely prefer edibles/ingestibles, though I'm having a hard time figuring out if they are as effective as smoking. Guess we'll have to experiment.

OP - I would recommend also looking to forums to see what success some others with the same condition have had with various marijuana-based products.
So glad we have turned a corner (some states) in their view of marijuana.

R10, that may be true. I didn't clarify, but implied, that smoking marijuana is probably one of the most stupid things an ill person can do unless terminal. Also for healthy people, since smoking MJ is worse than smoking cigarettes, per my Harvard-trained specialist. A competent specialist also knows which RX drugs are safe and efficacious and which are not. I have difficulty obtaining FDA-approved RX drugs from licensed physicians because they're expensive and/or in short supply!
Best I know, there's nothing wrong with CBD products. An informed person knows that before synthesized drugs, people used herbs, plant-derived medications, etc. Companies have been successful getting the FDA to ban most of those, to my detriment. An RX medication with a plant-derived extract which was of great benefit was banned for no other reason. That's American life.
I'll briefly share a recent in-patient hospital encounter with a doctor assigned to me from a poor, former Soviet-bloc country who criticized my specialist for prescribing a certain medication off-label. When I informed him who the doctor is and his credentials, his quote was, "Well, we all can't attend Harvard." That's unethical.
My state has medical marijuana only. I don't support people being able to grow any or freely smoke any amount. I know the dangers. TV commercials are broadcast here about special roadblocks to check for pot heads and people who are high on MJ. Most people don't realize that driving is a privilege, not a Constitutional right. President Carter proposed decriminalization of possession of a very small amount of marijuana. There will always be abusers.

I must add ^ that under Federal law, which takes precedence, all marijuana is illegal. This is an outstanding matter that the US Supreme Court has not resolved. Any person or business found in possession of marijuana by a federal law enforcement official can be arrested and prosecuted. Anyone in doubt is free to speak with a qualified attorney or federal authorities. There's a US House Bill to end that law. The US Controlled Substances Act still classifies cannabis as C-1.

R18 there's nothing wrong with being informed about natural medications. I've used them successfully, but don't grow them and don't use any without asking an apothecary or doctor. Humans used them before giant pharma. I believe aspirin came from tree bark. Doctors still prescribe that today. I saw a recent documentary which revealed Ancient Egyptians had surgical instruments and performed emergency procedures. Their women using honey and crocodile dung for birth control, which probably didn't work, but they had condoms.

Kushfly is a delivery service I use in L.A. it has a full line of everything. Their edibles are tasty and you can get CBD with no THC. You can start there and go up to a CBD with very low THC. You could fill out the order form for her. She just needs to have ID available to show the mellow delivery person. It’s nice your helping your mom. Elders do well with using dispensaries. Very safe.

I've never been to one, but I assume the marijuana dispensaries hired all the people who used to work at Tower Records. (At least the ones that didn't land at Trader Joe's.)

I’m a MMJ patient in NYC and it really is a very straightforward process involving a dispensary and trained pharmacist/staff. They tend to be younger and very supportive/helpful in figuring out what you need. And I use it for a knee problem as well and it seems to help.

OP you might want to look into this, I have no experience with it so I am not recommending it. I just had heard of it.

R27/R28, caveat emptor according to my former and current anesthesiologists. Something similar never helped me and I don't have any knee problems. That's not its purpose. Almost anyone with credentials can get an FDA approval if the product isn't dangerous, and even sometimes if it is. The FDA gets a lot of its funding via fees from approval-seekers. Many people don't know that.

There is little if any research on marijuana. Of course that's because research has been prohibited. But the swing towards assuming that marijuana is a "natural" cure-all will in a generation prove to have been retarded. Any powerful drug has side effects. Fat white guys like to pretend marijuana is different, but it's not.

r6 and others on this thread talking about how terrible weed is for you, I'm sure you feel this exact same way about alcohol and people who use it regularly, right?
I don't drink much and just this year started vaping weed when it became legal here in CA. I don't do it every night, mainly just on weekends and so far, I find it much milder than any drink I've ever had. I also find it helps with pain so I stopped taking 3 ibuprofen per night (horribly bad for you) and on the nights when I might feel like I have pain from my arthritis, it helps. My doctor is fully aware and made no protestations about me using weed.

I’m very surprised by the (possibly alarmist) comments about marijuana. Marijuana is probably bad for you (as opposed to carrots). But OP’s mom is being prescribed opiates for a chronic condition. I would much, much rather be dependent on marijuana that be addicted to opposites. I’m a layperson, so maybe I’m woefully misinformed, but WTF??!!

R33 I had to see an E.R doctor from Romania. Is yours from a place like that? Must be saying weed is preferable over ibuprofen. My anesthesiologist who went to Harvard knows damned well that marijuana is contraindicated/cannot be prescribed for arthritis. As I said, nobody can afford to lose brain cells, but I think it's too late. Yes, you're correct. I haven't had a drink since I was 23. There's no need for alcohol in the human body, with which my doctor agrees. He was smoker for 32 years and finally successfully quit. He and I also know that most abused substance in the USA is caffeine, which can cause hallucinations.
R34, correct, you are a layperson. A person with cancer on pain mgmt is not always addicted to opiates. I'm shocked by what I read on this site, but I've always known about stereotypical gay culture. I was watching chaturbate, saw a stupid hung man actually shoot up meth who got banned. He was like big deal, I'm just having a little fun.

If opiates make her feel sick weed will spaz her even more. The trick with opiates is to take them with caffeine pills or another stimulant. Not only does it make them work better, it also eliminates the soporific effect. I know this from experience. Only take them plain when you want to sleep.

Nope, r35 he's a good old, Jewish American doctor who I've been seeing for over 20 years.
Your the op of the "Do You Live Caffeine Free" thread, right? You know you're going to die someday, just like the rest of us. Might as well have some fun while you're here.

R37, no, not me. Haven't even seen that thread. Quality over quantity. Nearly everyone says I look at least 10 years younger than my age, women sometimes ask for skin care advice, I don't have wrinkles and I have a full head of hair. You guys can have all your fun. The only fun I want is as much safe fucking as I can get.

Hope your mom feels better. Sending her a big Internet hug 🤗.
