[quote] One of the best things about not having a singing voice or knowing how to not play a musical instrument is that I can appreciate and enjoy most music genres.

This is actually quite profound and true in my experience. Those who are singers or musicians tend to be more snobby in their tastes or at least more ashamed to admit to liking music without any particular ambition. I remember reading Steve Perry of Journey saying he was a fan of Gwen Stefani which I thought was awesome. I doubt any other singer of his caliber would make that confession.

by Anonymousreply 14December 12, 2019 3:44 AM

I remember ITunes used to collect celebrity playlists. It was mostly the same artists or songs featured over and over again, but you would sometimes get out of left field picks. Wish I had saved them.

by Anonymousreply 15December 12, 2019 3:48 AM

When a friend was at my place looking through a few CDs - specifically recordings by Edith Piaf - she went past the beginning of Piaf and pulled out the next CD.

"You've seen all the Piaf ones," I said. "That's the Partridge Family."

She said, "Oh! Yes! How embarrassing for you!"

Until then, I didn't know I should have been embarrassed. Actually, I'm still not really convinced, so fuck her and her snooty tastes. Je ne regrette rien!

There's little less cool on the face of the earth than the music of The 5th Dimension. And yet, they had monster hits / unpreventable earworms with material by people as hip as Laura Nyro, Jimmy Webb and Bacharach-David, so . . .

And I don't feel bad about liking them. Tough broad Chrissie Hynde has admitted to being a closeted Judy Collins / Karen Carpenter groupie.

DL advised me that Bryan Adams was Frau-music and I ought to renounce him.

Well, I’ve been in love with his gravelly power-fist voice since I was 5 years old so I’m not about to do that. I think he writes superlative pop-rock in his own idiom, and certainly revitalised the tormented ballad. So it’s not high art - is a typical love affair? I can listen to Badams music anytime anyplace and any time of the year, and it hits a note of something evocative.

Just one example; ‘Do I Have To Say The Words?’ can still move me to angsty manful tears. Fight me and fight the truth.

when I was younger and so desperate to make friends I hid so much about me -- my taste in music (I think Toni Toneil (sp) and Karen Carpenter are fantastic, beautiful), my sexuality (gay, see music taste) and most everything.

As a result, it was hard to make friends. Now, I'm just myself and I make friends. I know who my friends are.

No relationship; maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't.

by Anonymousreply 58December 18, 2019 4:12 AM

The "music you are ashamed of" - at least the examples in this thread - is the music that's instantly evocative of its time but still sounds great today. Fuck being ashamed of hit songs. They're the songs people remember.

... and there's nothing wrong with Train, R29. I was going to name Drops of Jupiter but somebody beat me to it.

BHmanny I can’t stand saccharine maudlin Coldplay or Chris Martin either, mostly because they were playing everywhere when I was in HS/College. I got fatigue from hearing their cuts in the mall, on the car stereo, at the gym, at the coffeeshop. Ugh.

I do acknowledge Coldplay did have a solid singles catalogue and PARACHUTES did break a particular new sound into the mainstream, but the way everyone treated that band like they were the Second Coming and the only indie act that ever mattered was revolting. It doesn’t help that Martin is on Bono & Sting’s llevel of insufferably preachy & superficial, and it didn’t take us long to find out. He hammers bluntly on his poor pianos, only it isn’t fun and powerful in the way that Elton & Tori do it.

However I must confess that two of Martin’s songs do mean something to me and did once make for a moving listen in my life - ‘The Warning Sign’ & ‘Lukas’ (given to Natalie Imbruglia). ‘The Warning Sign’ talks about a rarely-explored phenomenon in song, which is missing out on the chance at love because you didn’t notice someone you could have cared for. As for the latter song, I was in love with a guy named Lukas in freshman year who broke my heart, and I always connect my youthful longing with that song; it begrudges me to say so but it is beautiful, and probably the better for being sung and performed by a woman.

R80 I'm aware how uncool it was to be a fan of Coldplay as I was one, especially around the time of Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head. Yet here we are and the most popular English act for the last several years is Ed Sheeran, who makes Coldplay look like The Rolling Stones.

Jesus Take The Wheel - Carrie Underwood

Just kidding I hate that song, but are people telling me you really give a shit whether other people like your choice of music or not?

I couldn't give two shits whether anyone likes any of my choices about anything. I live my life for my pleasure not to be harassed by others about such trivial things.

Plus, when I listen to a song that's "traditionally gay" (Streisand/Cher/ABBA/Garland), I just feel a little awkward. I know it's wrong, but I don't need to announce to the entire WORLD that I'm a big homo.

Why hasn’t calypso & island pop ever had a revival? Or ska/beat, for that matter?

It takes me back to those warm summer nights sitting alone at in my first apartment with the sickly sweet fragrance of marijuana gently wafting up from my bohemian downstair neighbors.
