How old is your smartphone?
No, you cunts, I’m not some marketing shill for Apple or Samsung or whomever. I’m just someone who has a relatively old (2015) iPhone that I see no reason to replace, since it still works just fine, and buying a shiny new one seems like an absurd waste of money.
What about you? If you have multiple phones, select the age of the one you use most often.

I have a Samsung S9. It was fucking expensive. One day I dropped it in a bathtub full of water and it took me a few seconds to notice I had dropped it in and to fish it out. It was completely submerged for about 15 seconds (yes I am an idiotic). I dried it off and it's worked fine ever since.
I will never buy another phone that is not a Samsung again.
The End

Just replaced an iPhone 6 with the new iPhone 11. Before that I had an iPhone 3G. If your phone is working great and fits your needs, no need to upgrade.
That said, the camera on this thing is really, really good.

I traded my iPhone last year for an LG V30; it's the best phone I have ever owned. I still use an iPad and a Mac laptop. But I do not miss the iPhone.

You’re gonna have to replace it eventually op. I’m assuming you have a 6 or less if you bought it in 015. The software is now incapable of being updated and soon your apps will be. Not to mention Apple no longer will secure it. I just upgraded from 6 to X-R. Much faster and very pleased.

I just bought the iPhone 11pro, last week, replacing an old 6s, that I've had for years. So far I'm very happy with it.

My boyfriend fisted me with my old iPhone 6s Plus last week and we were unable to get the phone back out so I had to upgrade to the newest one. So far it's been pretty good. The old one finally came back out and I put it in a bag of rice and it's working again. I'm going to give it to my niece for Christmas.

5 years. I've kept my LG Stylo because it only requires charging once a week and has the biggest/clearest screen of any phone I've owned. I've never used an external case yet it looks like new.

OP what the fuck is wrong with you? How the hell do you even manage to use a computer let alone post on Datalounge? You are one of the rudest son of a bitches I’ve ever encountered on here in years. There’s already been a thread on this OP. As a matter of fact, you selfish asshole, there have been several threads on this, but ohhhh nooooo “I don’t have to do a search” says Mister Head Up His Ass. Well pull your fucking head out of your ass for once in your life you selfish son-of-a-bitch and have some consideration for others for a change and do a goddamn search first. Is that going to kill you? Is it? Can you just answer that question? Can you? Is it really going to kill you to do a search first? What is wrong with you? Are you that much of an idiot that you can’t use Google? Don’t even try the old “search function doesn’t work” line because every cunt on here knows how to work around that. Do a search before you post a thread next time you fucking asshole. You’ve ruined my day and I hate you.

The only reason I've ever bought a new phone was that the one I had wasn't working anymore. I honestly don't care how old it is.

WTF a bunch of Ok Boomers and Eldergays probably with an iPhone 3G or some shit. Y'all don't know anything about smartphone technology. You probably use your phone ONLY for phone calls.

The only explanation for r12 is retardation because almost every post in this thread is by someone with a brand new phone.

As long as you can still update the operating system and your phone is running smoothly / not slow, you’re good, IMO. I have an iPhone 6S with a ton of memory on it and no problems, knock on wood.

Smartphone technology and features haven't really improved THAT much in the past 3 years. If a phone works fine, no sense in being shamed for an old phone.
Considering they now charge more for phones than laptops!!

I recently upgraded to a Google Pixel 4 XL that I bought unlocked, directly from Google. I bought it early Nov, not realizing that Google themselves have traditionally offered black friday deals (this is my first Pixel phone). I've been on T-Mobile for years now, and got "grandfathered in" with my current plan, which is about $55/mo, so switching carriers to get a new phone wouldn't really be a "deal" as my bill going forward would be at least $70/mo plus additional charges.
Thankfully, because I was in the 30 return window with Google when they offered their $200 off black friday deal, I simply called them, and they credited it back to me.
Previously, I had been using a Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The battery on it was shot, but I got a good 5 1/2 years of use out of it, so no regrets.

I have Samsung Galaxy S8. There is nothing wrong with it, water proof and works with my android smart watch better than apple. But I still hate it. Everything I used to do on an iPhone now takes 3 more steps. Not very intuitive. On the plus side it's software is much more robust and open architecture. So for example I can put my camera in a pro mode where I can control everything from exposure to IOS without having to use a special app.
The thing is, Apple sucks now that Steve Jobs is dead and the accountants took over. Not to mention Jony Ive the head of product design who pushed a lot of change in the beginning has just left. So expect little to no innovation in function or style for the next 5 to 10 years probably. Companies like this will not change until the feel financial pain and the general public is slow to change even when the handwriting is on the wall.

I have an older iPhone. Works good, but I think my battery drains faster now. Not sure. I retired my iPhone 5 due to battery issues (swelling within the phone encasement). So, battery issues can also arise.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus and was ready to make the leap to the iPhone 11 Pro, but was waiting for a Black Friday sale that never materialized (the only sales on iPhones involved subscriptions with carriers, but I wanted to buy an unlocked one without activation). Now, articles are coming out about how great the iPhones in 2020 will be (5G but no more expensive than the current ones, etc.), so I'm thinking of waiting some more.

The new iPhones have 3 different camera lenses, I think. However, none of these 3 lenses is a closeup lens. Kind of a waste.
Also, Apple is continuing on with the protruding camera lens. Your phone should be able to lie flat on its back (no puns intended). Instead, they want a "thin" camera with a protruding lens. That's really a huge design flaw. I don't use a phone case. I think the phone cases to compensate for the protrusion.

I have a... wait for it... BlackBerry KeyOne. It's a couple years old. They do still occasionally make phones, but they run Android now. I love having physical buttons again after years of having iPhones (I had BlackBerry phones before that). There is a newer upgraded version called the KeyTwo, but for now I'm happy with this one.

Have an IPhone 8 - paid for. I just cancelled my insurance on it. At $15 month, I figure I will get a refurbished one if I lose it at this point.
Ridiculous that they make the old ones outdated. But I do like the security of iOS. I trust it more than any other internet connection.

For the majority of people with average usage needs, you probably don't need to replace a smart phone more often than 3-5 years.
However, both Android and Apple have limits on device support. The oldest phone ios 12 supports is iPhone 5s (2013). ios 13 will only support 6s (2015) and newer. You want a recent operating system for the security.
Apps also will be upgraded and will be incompatible with older operating systems beyond a certain point. Many services won't connect without the latest app release.
Battery life begins to decline. Of course, you can simply replace the battery.
Even if the operating system (and apps) can be loaded on an older phone, the older processors may be sluggish or may not have sufficient memory (not storage). Advances in bluetooth, wireless, and cellular make connecting to other devices and networks less efficient. While 5G is in its infancy and has limited coverage for now, you will not be able to connect without upgraded internals when it become ubiquitous and after that many apps will require that speed of connection to operate.

I have a Samsung S5, so it is 5 yo. It was a gift from someone who was switching over to an iphone. I actually replaced the one I got originally with the same model when my original one was damaged (I bought the second one on Craigslist for $50, about 2 years ago), because I had spare batteries and an external charging system for the batteries. (I like to charge the batteries and change them out rather than waiting for my phone to charge in a wall unit). I'm not a tech junkie, and I only use my phone for calling, texting, (swyping of course, which is why I'll never have an iphone), map traveling (in 300 feet turn right at the light), google searches, and pulling up a cute youtube video if someone asks about one at a social gathering, so I don't get all excited about the latest phones and their new features. If I were an inventor, I'd invent a smart phone that worked on an accordion or scroll principle, so that you could push in either end to make a phone the size of a chapstick or something, so that it would fit comfortable in the pocket of a pair of pants, and then you'd pull it open when you want the full screen size of a smartphone.

The best advice I ever heard about keeping up with technology whether its software or hardware is to skip every other update. So if you have an iphone 6, wait for an 8, then wait for a 10 and so on. That way you are still very up to date without spending the entire year of updates without feeling like you can never catch up with all the changes.

I have a Nokia that I bought cheap as an end of run model about a year and a half back, it had been on the market over a year and was being replaced with the next generation. I've stuck a massive SD card in it to hold all my music and pics etc. I bought it to replace a ZTE I dropped a hammer on. It still does everything I need and I'll keep it until either it doesnt or I break it
I'm with OP, its just a tool, not a status symbol for me.
