You Wanted Same-Sex Marriage? Now You Have Pete Buttigieg
To a lot of progressive queer people, Buttigieg’s campaign symbolizes everything the marriage-focused mainstream gay rights movement has failed to deliver.

Another gross "he's not the right kind of gay" piece and it's making the rounds on social media right now. I linked to the Archive.is version so as not to give that trash person more ad revenue.
from ACT UP activists to the queer wing of the DSA

Reminder: your homosexuality doesn't matter and you're in no way useful to us unless you're a democratic socialist.
Realistically, the US electorate is more likely to vote for someone who presents himself like Buttigieg than for a polyamorous bottom queen.

And?

by Anonymousreply 1December 11, 2019 7:34 PM

I want a president not a polyamorous bottom queen. I want him to work, not spend his days on Grindr looking for milky loads.

by Anonymousreply 2December 11, 2019 7:41 PM

r2. That would still be a vast improvement over Trump who is constantly on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 3December 11, 2019 7:44 PM

I still can't believe how homophobic the left has become in the last few years or so.

by Anonymousreply 4December 11, 2019 7:46 PM

I don't understand it.

If they don't like his politics just attack his politics, but no, they are always with the same shit of not being the right kind of gay

by Anonymousreply 5December 11, 2019 7:48 PM
they are always with the same shit of not being the right kind of gay

no one but columnists call him "not the right kind of gay."

They are amazed that every gay isn't supporting him just because he's gay.

Believe it or not, gays actually have brains that can handle deep, complex thought.

Also, why the accusatory "You wanted same-sex marriage?" as though this is to be embarrassed about? Why the hell should gay and lesbian couples apologise for wanting equality?

by Anonymousreply 8December 11, 2019 8:04 PM

R6: That's not true. Everytime someone bashed him on twitter for not being the right kind of gay it's always a gay (or even better a queer) guy

by Anonymousreply 9December 11, 2019 8:09 PM

This is honestly harmful and gross. Fuck Buzzfeed and this author - “if you suck dick, but you’re not sucking Bernie Sanders’ dick - are you the right kind of gay?”

Will people hopefully look back on this primary season when it’s done and reflect on this kind of bullshit gate keeping/policing and all the coded homophobia being thrown around like it’s nothing... ? Probably not.

by Anonymousreply 10December 11, 2019 8:18 PM

When gay marriage became legalized, I remember all these "queer" activists posted articles about how marriage is a conservative institution and how it won't help gay people. What morons. I guess having the right to visit your husband/wife in the hospital means nothing to them.

by Anonymousreply 11December 11, 2019 8:31 PM
Buttigieg has clearly benefited from the cultural cachet afforded by his whiteness, maleness, and academic pedigree. Some of Buttigieg’s supporters have actually weaponized his sexuality, too, using cries of anti-gay prejudice to turn around and discriminate against other groups, like spreading the insidious and racist lie that homophobia is the reason Buttigieg is floundering with black voters.

It's always these fucking queers that bitch about successful white gay men ruining the movement, but then demand those same white gay men bankroll their homophobic, misogynist causes "because privilege."

They are always so quick to crucify the white gay male that they do not even recognize or acknowledge the "assimilationist" lesbian. This ironically highlights their own subservience to the patriarchy and their own erasure of women. And that's not even counting their misogynist pro-tranny stances.

The queer movement is at its core homophobic. Denigrating legalized gay relationships (gay marriage) - which is what they do - is the crux of what it means to be homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 12December 11, 2019 8:33 PM

And note that not ONCE does this queer cunt use the word lesbian in her article.

She and her homophobia can get fucked.

by Anonymousreply 13December 11, 2019 8:36 PM

There is a point to the mainstream gay rights movement being marriage focused to the detriment of anti-discrimination laws. It is legal to be fired for being gay in a majority of states right now. I wish the movement had been more holistic in it's approach so we wouldn't have the lopsided legal situation we have now.

by Anonymousreply 17December 11, 2019 9:52 PM

I’m not sure I’m understanding the authoress’s point on marriage. She’s saying it exists for middle class people to hoard their money? Well, does that mean if you never get married you’re likely to share it with the world?

Also, I’m surprised she didn’t squeeze in a “trans women of color are literally murdered every five minutes” because she seems like the type that would.

by Anonymousreply 18December 11, 2019 9:58 PM

Buttigieg is the gay Manchurian candidate. He is the perfect example of a slick politician ready to sell his sole to the devil, if he had one.

by Anonymousreply 19December 11, 2019 10:05 PM
Also, why the accusatory "You wanted same-sex marriage?" as though this is to be embarrassed about? Why the hell should gay and lesbian couples apologise for wanting equality?

Because while we were working on securing our rights to marriage, employment and adoptions, in the meantime we obviously didn’t do enough to uplift our trannie and enby betters.

I mean, *duh*.

by Anonymousreply 25December 11, 2019 10:54 PM

This sentence, buried about two-thirds of the way through, is what the article is really about:
[bold][italic] Earlier this year, I tried to do just that, pitching a profile of Buttigieg when he first started gaining momentum in the spring. But the interview never came through.... [/bold][/italic]

TL;DR: she'd met him and Chasten at a party a few years back, before he was a candidate, likely told everyone she had an in with him, the in never happened and now she's pissed and writing hit pieces.

by Anonymousreply 26December 11, 2019 10:59 PM

Yeah. DL is representative of the left. It isn't just reflective of a minority of shut-in, bitter gays.

by Anonymousreply 27December 11, 2019 11:00 PM

Another pointless hit piece written by a self-described 'radical queer' woman against a mainstream gay Democratic candidate. We are without a doubt our own worst enemies -- and the hysterical tears of rage if/when Trump wins a 2nd term will not cause *any* self-reflection whatever in these ideological purists.

by Anonymousreply 28December 11, 2019 11:14 PM

Is she "radical queer" though?

Or just, as noted, at R26, pissed off that Pete's team won't give her insider access given they are both gay?

Sounds more like the latter TBH

by Anonymousreply 29December 11, 2019 11:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 43December 12, 2019 3:03 AM
Following the reception, I was chatting with a group of people outside of a hotel afterparty when I heard somebody from the street yell, “Hey, BuzzFeed!” I turned; it was Pete and Chasten, who’d rolled down their car window. One of them, I couldn’t tell which, waved at me and shouted: “Hit us up if you’re ever in Indiana.” (Earlier this year, I tried to do just that, pitching a profile of Buttigieg when he first started gaining momentum in the spring. But the interview never came through, and I got the sense that his campaign staff wasn’t interested in any more coverage focusing on his gay identity. In a recent follow-up email with Lis Smith, one of Buttigieg’s senior advisers, she recalled that we were “asking for a fair amount of access to Pete and Chasten at home,” and “there were a lot of outlets asking for access like that at that time. Everyone got [the] same answer — was nothing personal or specific to you.”)

Blogger doesn't get access to Pete's house (because presidential candidates are busy like that), proceeds to write a bitter hit piece that he isn't gay enough and that he doesn't matter anyway because he's not actively fighting to dismantle capitalism. That's it, that's all you need to know about all this.

by Anonymousreply 44December 12, 2019 3:46 AM

R44 Jesus Christ this bitch thought she was slick ... so her exaggerated sense of self importance took a bit of a hit? Great to know.

by Anonymousreply 45December 12, 2019 4:11 AM

All these people who stand by their 'radical queer' ideologies - if everything they wanted came to fruition and everyone acted according to their radical lifestyle, they would find some other platform of fake injustices to distance themselves from society and to feel superior.

Seriously sick and tired of this bullshit. It's so transparent. What the fuck have these 'radicals' changed in gay rights in the past 15 years? Exactly nothing.

by Anonymousreply 46December 12, 2019 4:31 AM

The article is also weird in taking gays to task for pushing for marriage equality ... when there were many (if not more) straight people who supported the changes in law, too.

by Anonymousreply 57December 13, 2019 10:51 PM

I’m genuinely sick of these hit pieces—and that’s exactly what they are—against Pete. He’s not my first choice, but dear God! We worry about conservatives going after a gay candidate when the greatest attacks are coming from the progressives. It’s frustrating.

by Anonymousreply 58December 13, 2019 10:58 PM

R58, I genuinely think that "queer" leftists are attacking Buttigieg far more than conservatives are. And that's alarming.

Pretty soon gays are going to revolt and not vote for the Democratic Party like Jews in the UK with Labour. That doesn’t mean we’ll vote Republican, but we’ll be very stingy with our votes. There’s only so far you can trash a minority until they call it quits. Keep making us feel unwelcome and pushed to the sidelines. See what happens. Gay Millennials and Zoomers don’t vote and don’t bring in the money - but keep coddling them, by all means.

If I had to guess R73, he's making the obvious point that the current healthcare system is cheaper for families or couples and that many times people have coverage via their spouse/significant other.

And that with MFA you would not have that distinction so no penalty for being single and he's defining marriage and family as heteronormative activities.

But that's just a guess. I was as baffled as you.

[bold]Navigating LGBT Marginalization: The Remarkable Presidential Run of Pete Buttigieg[/bold]

Another take I think DL might enjoy. Yes, it's a blog post, but it's pretty insightful when it comes to identifying the causes behind these bizarre think pieces. Points for the Maddow diss. 😄
When he is interviewed by the media, Pete Buttigieg elicits strangely personal stories that reveal more about the author or interviewer than about the candidate. There's a lot of what I call "lightning rod" defensive talk. Buttigieg is a lightning rod for individual's feelings about gay rights, the gay community, their own sexuality. Rachel Maddow, in her first interview with Buttigieg, hemmed and hawed her way into discussing his relatively late coming out age. She was a bit too nosy and disrespectful when she asked him why it took him a decade longer than her to come out. It came across as an invasion of the man’s privacy. (The short of it: There is no prescribed time, no age factor for coming to terms with being gay.) Ms. Maddow is clearly more comfortable talking with more conventional candidates who appear on her show.
That Pete Buttigieg confounds society's expectations and norms frustrates the punditocracy and distorts their interpretation of him. From afar they cannot grasp his growing popularity and rely on stale, preconceived ideas from elections and eras past. But as Buttigieg himself has said, despite the sharply divided country, technology, Americans’ attitudes and lives are changing rapidly. When a reporter asked him if he foresaw any problems dealing with nations that treat homosexuality harshly, Buttigieg replied confidently that "they will get used to it quickly."
The Buttigieg candidacy has provided both the 2010s’ most on-the-nose symbol of gay political progress and a valuable opportunity for LGBTQ self-reflection: about what perspectives we seek when we advocate for gay representation in politics, about the benefits white gay men still reap from their race and gender, and about what it means that the first viable major party gay presidential candidate is running against several people who are just as eloquent and progressive on LGBTQ issues as he is. The decade that first produced a gay presidential candidacy is also the first decade to see a Democratic primary in which LGBTQ rights aren’t raised as a point of controversy. It feels like a privilege to have the opportunity to disagree.
