You Wanted Same-Sex Marriage? Now You Have Pete Buttigieg
To a lot of progressive queer people, Buttigieg’s campaign symbolizes everything the marriage-focused mainstream gay rights movement has failed to deliver.
Another gross "he's not the right kind of gay" piece and it's making the rounds on social media right now. I linked to the Archive.is version so as not to give that trash person more ad revenue.

When gay marriage became legalized, I remember all these "queer" activists posted articles about how marriage is a conservative institution and how it won't help gay people. What morons. I guess having the right to visit your husband/wife in the hospital means nothing to them.
Buttigieg has clearly benefited from the cultural cachet afforded by his whiteness, maleness, and academic pedigree. Some of Buttigieg’s supporters have actually weaponized his sexuality, too, using cries of anti-gay prejudice to turn around and discriminate against other groups, like spreading the insidious and racist lie that homophobia is the reason Buttigieg is floundering with black voters.
It's always these fucking queers that bitch about successful white gay men ruining the movement, but then demand those same white gay men bankroll their homophobic, misogynist causes "because privilege."
They are always so quick to crucify the white gay male that they do not even recognize or acknowledge the "assimilationist" lesbian. This ironically highlights their own subservience to the patriarchy and their own erasure of women. And that's not even counting their misogynist pro-tranny stances.
The queer movement is at its core homophobic. Denigrating legalized gay relationships (gay marriage) - which is what they do - is the crux of what it means to be homophobic.

There is a point to the mainstream gay rights movement being marriage focused to the detriment of anti-discrimination laws. It is legal to be fired for being gay in a majority of states right now. I wish the movement had been more holistic in it's approach so we wouldn't have the lopsided legal situation we have now.
Following the reception, I was chatting with a group of people outside of a hotel afterparty when I heard somebody from the street yell, “Hey, BuzzFeed!” I turned; it was Pete and Chasten, who’d rolled down their car window. One of them, I couldn’t tell which, waved at me and shouted: “Hit us up if you’re ever in Indiana.” (Earlier this year, I tried to do just that, pitching a profile of Buttigieg when he first started gaining momentum in the spring. But the interview never came through, and I got the sense that his campaign staff wasn’t interested in any more coverage focusing on his gay identity. In a recent follow-up email with Lis Smith, one of Buttigieg’s senior advisers, she recalled that we were “asking for a fair amount of access to Pete and Chasten at home,” and “there were a lot of outlets asking for access like that at that time. Everyone got [the] same answer — was nothing personal or specific to you.”)
Blogger doesn't get access to Pete's house (because presidential candidates are busy like that), proceeds to write a bitter hit piece that he isn't gay enough and that he doesn't matter anyway because he's not actively fighting to dismantle capitalism. That's it, that's all you need to know about all this.

[bold]Navigating LGBT Marginalization: The Remarkable Presidential Run of Pete Buttigieg[/bold]
Another take I think DL might enjoy. Yes, it's a blog post, but it's pretty insightful when it comes to identifying the causes behind these bizarre think pieces. Points for the Maddow diss. 😄
When he is interviewed by the media, Pete Buttigieg elicits strangely personal stories that reveal more about the author or interviewer than about the candidate. There's a lot of what I call "lightning rod" defensive talk. Buttigieg is a lightning rod for individual's feelings about gay rights, the gay community, their own sexuality. Rachel Maddow, in her first interview with Buttigieg, hemmed and hawed her way into discussing his relatively late coming out age. She was a bit too nosy and disrespectful when she asked him why it took him a decade longer than her to come out. It came across as an invasion of the man’s privacy. (The short of it: There is no prescribed time, no age factor for coming to terms with being gay.) Ms. Maddow is clearly more comfortable talking with more conventional candidates who appear on her show.
That Pete Buttigieg confounds society's expectations and norms frustrates the punditocracy and distorts their interpretation of him. From afar they cannot grasp his growing popularity and rely on stale, preconceived ideas from elections and eras past. But as Buttigieg himself has said, despite the sharply divided country, technology, Americans’ attitudes and lives are changing rapidly. When a reporter asked him if he foresaw any problems dealing with nations that treat homosexuality harshly, Buttigieg replied confidently that "they will get used to it quickly."

[bold]The Decade When the Fight for LGBTQ Rights Went Mainstream[/bold]
The Buttigieg candidacy has provided both the 2010s’ most on-the-nose symbol of gay political progress and a valuable opportunity for LGBTQ self-reflection: about what perspectives we seek when we advocate for gay representation in politics, about the benefits white gay men still reap from their race and gender, and about what it means that the first viable major party gay presidential candidate is running against several people who are just as eloquent and progressive on LGBTQ issues as he is. The decade that first produced a gay presidential candidacy is also the first decade to see a Democratic primary in which LGBTQ rights aren’t raised as a point of controversy. It feels like a privilege to have the opportunity to disagree.
