UK's post-Brexit trade at risk as WTO's top court shuts down

[quote]The UK is at risk of being left at the mercy of the EU in its trading relationship in a year’s time after Donald Trump engineered the shutdown of the World Trade Organization’s top court.

[quote]Trump’s refusal to approve the appointment or reappointment of any judges on the appellate body has left it unable to function.

[quote]From midnight on Wednesday, the WTO court will no longer adjudicate on trade disputes, putting the world at risk of a free trade free-for-all in which the largest blocs have greater freedom to use their economic weight to do as they wish.

After Brexit, UK US and Putin will undercut the EU on trade deals and try to destroy it.

Don't forget China and Japan who's already rumbling about tariffs. And this might shock some, but Australia's official policy is to literally wait and see by how much the UK gets shafted by other trading partners first, before they start their own trade negotiations as their negotiating position will be made stronger after they have that data.

I would absolutely welcome the UK being "at the mercy" of the EU because that would mean that we would keep our currently high standards, rights and regulations. The further we get from EU regulations, the more at risk we are from other huge economies, such as the US or China, who will demand that we reduce our food, safety and worker safeguards.

As a Brit, I want Trump to lose the election next year not simply because Trump is an ass but because it would totally destroy the Brexiter argument that we can get a great trade deal with the US (not that Trump wants to give us a great trade deal, he wants to abuse us). Although, it would be amusing to have a few months of Boris's government trying to negotiate with Trump, who will demand that we buy expensive American pharmaceuticals and not the cheaper ones we can already get, disease-riddled chickens and crappy American cars.

Oh UK under Johnson will happily give in to lower standards as the US demands.

As an American, I apologize. I expect to stay in apology mode for years.

Yay! Years of eating shit sandwiches to look forward to. Brexit will be the gift that keeps on giving. x
