What does DL think of this gay couple moving from Brooklyn life to outdoorsy farm life?

Hello! We are an outdoorsy 30-something gay couple from Brooklyn, NY and have recently purchased a 23-acre homestead in the lush Blue Ridge Mountains as our new primary residence. Less than one-hour’s drive west of Asheville, NC, we’re still connected to a busy city, but far enough removed to live the organic, mountain life. The closest towns are named “Trust” and “Luck,” North Carolina, so we like it.

The property is mainly forested, although there are ~2 acres of tillable land — and we have some serious vegetable and cut flower garden, as well as bee plans! There is a 4 bedroom home from the 70’s (which we’re also renovating), a sizeable pond, year-round creek, two barns, a greenhouse, tons of garden beds with huge potential, as well as a corn crib which we plan to rehab into a chicken coop. There is also a detached “mother-in-law” studio, which we’re hoping to make a meditative/yoga space.

Join our family in the transition from an "urban" to "rural" America. Essentially, we want to integrate and elevate our urban farming experience into this new 23-acre homestead.

After living the greater majority of our lives in metropolitan cities across North and South America (Will is an east-coast guy, and Sebastian grew up in Chile), we essentially decided to exit the modern workforce and pursue our dream of building a permaculture-style homestead. We even did Workaway for a while, so we’ve been in your shoes!

We have knowledge in landscape design, beekeeping, fundamentals of gardening, master composting, cooking and baking, fermenting, brand building, language-teaching and much more. We have a lot to share and equally want to learn as much as possible from you. We have been planning this homestead for quite a long time now and so we have a clear vision for what we hope to achieve, but now it’s about putting things into life and learning from those with skills we do not yet have. We are interested in languages as well and have a well-stocked library of which you would be more than welcome to use.

They’re searching for cock and isn’t a rooster.

by Anonymousreply 9December 10, 2019 10:08 PM

Good for them, escaping the rigmarole. Sounds like they're good at working with their hands.

by Anonymousreply 10December 10, 2019 10:09 PM

Volunteers? Hmmmm.

by Anonymousreply 11December 10, 2019 10:09 PM

They should open a gay bnb. Rent out the MIL cottage and for a couple of hundred extra you get the Chilean’s hog, $500 you get both.

I’d go work a week if I was guaranteed of getting spit-roasted at the end of week campfire.

by Anonymousreply 12December 10, 2019 10:11 PM

No doubt in my mind, R10.

by Anonymousreply 13December 10, 2019 10:12 PM

What they are looking for in volunteers:

We have many years of tasks ahead of us, so there is quite a bit of flexibility in what you could contribute or help with. Furthermore, we are at the start of our adventure, which can be seen in two ways — whoa, there’s a lot to do, but also yay, we essentially have a blank canvas and would welcome your input in shaping our homestead.

The ideal volunteer would have relevant experience, ideally a previous Workaway stay, although that’s not mandatory. We are looking for proactive, independent and caring volunteers. We would ask for 5-hour days (exact hours flexible), 5 days a week (again flexible on the exact days, although most would opt for weekends “off”) and we find ~2 weeks to be the sweet spot as for duration of your stay, although we would be open to shorter/longer-term if it suited everyone's needs.

Know though, that there is no public transportation to/from Asheville or any other nearby city. You would need your own transportation, and/or coordinate with us when we head into town (usually 1-2 times/week).

Here is a list, in no particular order, of some tasks on our to do list. If you’re interested in helping us. Please send an intro, outlining any relevant experience, what you’d hope to learn/gain from helping us, as well as anything that piques your interest from this list below.

by Anonymousreply 14December 10, 2019 10:12 PM

Accommodation

We will provide a room in the main home, with a shared full bathroom for volunteers. A bed, linens and basic toiletries will be provided but you need to bring your essentials. We can host a maximum of one couple or two individuals. But no more than two total volunteers at any given time.

Included in your stay is access to the home and kitchen, including basic pantry essentials (e.g., eggs, bread, fruit, nuts, etc.) as well as two meals — lunch and early evening dinner - during the workdays. You would be more than welcome to grocery shop and use the kitchen for yourself any day of the week for breakfast etc. We eat a mixed diet, including meat and fish, although we frequently make vegetarian meals and could certainly accommodate any dietary needs. We love to bake too, so if you’re an all-star in the kitchen, we’d love to hear from you.

by Anonymousreply 30December 10, 2019 10:47 PM

Who in the hell do those queens think they are? Essentially, they’re seeking free labor, and they’ve packaged this like they’re doing you a favor. Oh yes, they’ll deign a nice bedroom and you’ll be fed two meals a day.

It’s all in service to the queens who are likely too cheap and/or in a financial bind to pay for labor. You’ll be welcome to use the kitchen, which means you’ll be burdened with cooking the promised two meals a day. They won’t prepare breakfast and they don’t offer transportation! They even require a resume and a statement of interest.

In essence, you are PAYING them so you can volunteer your free labor. Their gall is astounding!

by Anonymousreply 31December 10, 2019 10:50 PM

Their names are Will and Sebastian according to review on the site.

by Anonymousreply 33December 10, 2019 10:51 PM

I wonder how much they bought that property for. I hope they're all in it for the long haul because it seems like it probably cost a pretty penny for that much land.

by Anonymousreply 34December 10, 2019 10:55 PM

All things aside, the U.S. and the Americas in general have some really beautiful landscape.

by Anonymousreply 35December 10, 2019 10:58 PM

There’s some popularity to these programs, where you get to travel for next to nothing in exchange for in-kind services. There are quite a few volunteer programs that operate this way.

It’s a grown up work-study plan.

by Anonymousreply 36December 10, 2019 11:05 PM

Are they actually charging people, or just looking for volunteers? I don't understand what their long-term goal is. Getting their house renovated? Do they expect to be self-sustaining?

by Anonymousreply 37December 10, 2019 11:07 PM

R37, I don't believe they're charging people. They essentially offer free room, board, and meals in exchange for labor. Like R36, these types of programs are popular with traveling hippie types.

by Anonymousreply 38December 10, 2019 11:12 PM

They want volunteers, i.e., slaves. Two acres of tillable land isn't going to get them much and they're going to find lots of other people who are trying to get by on multiple part-time jobs.

by Anonymousreply 39December 10, 2019 11:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 43December 10, 2019 11:29 PM

One time about 15 years ago there was a hot daddy with a huge huge cock who advertised a B&B room in his apartment in Lucerne Switzerland. This was on a gay cruising site. I tried to hook up with him but I was deemed too old in my late 30s. His meat was strictly absolutely ONLY for twinks. I had a conference in his town and booked his room, using a different name than mind on the sex site. I got that donkey dick twice. But I paid for it because he still charged me the fair (modest) rent for the room.

by Anonymousreply 44December 10, 2019 11:29 PM

I think I'd be more worried about asking opinions of a bunch of people on a world wide gay gossip forum than moving to a farm

by Anonymousreply 45December 10, 2019 11:33 PM

In the past I've spent hours on that website. There is something for everyone from 1 day to a year. Mostly, it's young, rich people with multiple homes and lofty ideals. Lots of people just like these guys, all over the world. Some just want a reliable person to answer their phone and mail and mist the orchids 3x a day. Many are BNB's in progress. Really, any skill or hobby you have, someone will let you stay in their house and do it. I remember 1 guy with a huge house on a Greek Island who just wanted a cat-sitter for a month. That would have been sweet.

The Chilean is hot, the white guy has inheritance money.

by Anonymousreply 72December 11, 2019 1:56 AM

Somehow, I can see those two selfish queens, sitting on their asses, barking orders, while others do the labor.

by Anonymousreply 73December 11, 2019 1:58 AM

This site, WorkAway, is popular with broke/adventurous, young international travelers looking to roam around other countries for a pittance. Youth hostel crowd on a shoestring. by Anonymousreply 74December 11, 2019 2:07 AM

When it comes to the grunt work, one or both queens might suddenly have a meeting, a conference call, or an appointment. They’ll only be a few minutes to a half hour, but will disappear until sunset or when almost all the work was done for the day.

For those of you saying Brooklyn just recently became gay, Truman Capote lived in Brooklyn in the 1950s and ‘60s. Way before that, Walt Whitman lived in Brooklyn - from the 1820s to the 1860s. Brooklyn has been gay since before the word gay was used that way. There was an amazing exhibit not long ago at the Brooklyn Historical Society about gay life on the Brooklyn waterfront in the 19th century.

R83. That sounds like my idea of hell. And I'm not even young. Good luck to them getting anyone young, hale and hearty to stay there with no internet or cell service......AND do their grunt work. What is there to see and do in that isolated area that anyone would want to visit at all, let alone pay for the privilege with back breaking work?

Also, good luck finding skilled labor. If they think they will get qualified contractors to renovate that dump for free, they are in for a rude awakening. Their "guests" will be spoiled millennial dreamers with little experience and even less work ethic. They'll sleep in, wander off after an hour of work and fake illness.

In related news, the dogs have set up a separate GoFundMe to help rehome them back to Brooklyn!

by Anonymousreply 98December 11, 2019 10:06 AM

You misunderstand R97, I want to do what they are doing, not go and work for them. The idea of living in a rural location with plenty of land and having lots of animals around and minimal human interaction appeals to me more and more.

It would be a deal breaker for me to not have amazing internet though. I would need to be able to stream TV and movies, and use it for gaming and Skype calls with friends and relatives. I also don't think I'd do it in the UK - the weather isn't consistently good enough.

I would also need a home gym though - fuck the yoga studio, bring in the weights, a rack, a few machines and I'm set.

by Anonymousreply 99December 11, 2019 10:10 AM

R98 I would imagine the dogs are MUCH happier in that environment where they have loads of space to run around and explore than in a busy, dirty, polluted and noisy city.

R103 I don't agree that rural life equals middle of nowhere. Trust me, I'm the descendant of farm peasants.

[quote]I don't agree that rural life equals middle of nowhere. There are plenty of places near where I live currently that I would consider to be rural but are not the middle of nowhere

Yup, near where I live in Bucks County, PA, there are a lot of rural spaces and you are still only an hour from Philly and 1.5 hrs from NYC. A friend of mine has 10 acres. When you're there it 'feels' like the middle of no where, but it really isn't. It just comes down to how much land you have and how far away you are from neighbors and major roads/highways.

by Anonymousreply 113December 11, 2019 4:41 PM

R109, to be fair, if they asked for more hours of work, they'd be unlikely to get very many volunteers.

by Anonymousreply 114December 11, 2019 8:33 PM

R95, are they near the Appalachian Trail? If so, maybe they get some AT thru-hikers in that area, looking for a respite. Sorry, my knowledge of the geography of this area is lacking.

by Anonymousreply 117December 11, 2019 8:50 PM

R117, is the area they live in particularly dangerous?

by Anonymousreply 118December 12, 2019 1:55 AM

^It isn't the area. It's the fact that they are inviting vagrants into their home. How many elder gays have to get murdered by grifting, drug addict twinks before they learn.

by Anonymousreply 120December 12, 2019 7:35 AM

Because DL's too dumb to figure out that this is just how Workaway typically works and no one's forcing you to sign up if it's not your thing. Also, Dlers are always envious and bitter about any gay man who might be having a more interesting or successful life than they are, and anyone at all who seems to be "getting away with" something.
