Warren is Warring With Soaring Pete Buttigieg

[QUOTE] Long-simmering tensions between Buttigieg and Warren have burst into the open. The campaigns each called the other out in a flurry of back and forths on the candidates’ tax returns, past corporate clients, campaign bundlers and opening fundraisers to the media.

[QUOTE]” I'm very glad that Mr. Buttigieg is worried that I have been too easy on upper-income people and the millionaires and billionaires, that I'm gonna allow their kids to go to public colleges and universities—just, by the way, as they do go to public schools right now. Trump's kids can go to any public school, elementary school, high school in the country "tuition-free."

[QUOTE]“But the point is, I happen to believe that when you talk about programs like Social Security, like healthcare, like higher education, they should be universal. The way you pay for them, and the way I do it, not the way Buttigieg does it, is I do demand that at a time of massive income and wealth inequality, that the very rich will start paying their fair share of taxes, as will corporate America.”

by Anonymousreply 31December 7, 2019 10:48 PM

Be it Warren, Biden or Bernie who becomes the nominee, lil Pete has no place in the 2020 election. Everyone knows this. The Biden/Harris ticket is looking cynical and sweet. And more importantly, like a winning one. I'm voting for Warren in the primary. I hope to vote for her in the general too.

by Anonymousreply 32December 7, 2019 10:49 PM

Warren is never going to recover from her healthcare debacle. She isn't going to peel off any moderate voters from Biden or Pete or Amy. She's not going to get any Berniebros. She's not getting older black voters from Biden. She's not getting the younger black voters from Bernie. All that's left is college educated white urban liberals, which is why her failing campaign is pulling all of this anti Pete bullshit. because Pete's numbers in that area are on a steady rise. Poor, poor Lizzie.

by Anonymousreply 33December 7, 2019 10:51 PM

[quote]Buttigieg leads in both NH and Iowa

Yeah but there are no black people in NH and IA. He’s polling at 0% in SC. Black people don’t tust him bc he’s CLUELESS about black people. He’s obviously never spent any time with or known any black people, ever. He has no clue how they think or how to reach them (and yeah I know black people are not a monolith but there are commonalities among them. Like a middle-class white gay man saying his history of discrimination can be compared to theirs is a BIG FAT NO,)

Hillary showed that you can’t win without inspiring black people to turn out. Pete will not do that. Black people will stay home in 2020 and we will lose (again) if Pete is the nominee.

by Anonymousreply 34December 7, 2019 11:05 PM

Warren probably can't win. But she's running a just and progressive campaign that would be considered centrist in most any other developed nation. Lil Pete is a media fag, I mean fad. He's a deceptive, sketchy, conservative, warmongering racist in the pocket of big business. Lots of better men can do what he does better. Warren can be proud of herself, as can her supporters. She's trying to right the ship. It will be too late to ever try again after this. All or nothing with Bernie and Warren. They deserve all credit, respect and best wishes. Iowa ain't nothing no more. Get over yourself. Is there a more retrograde candidate than Pete Buttigig? Doesn't matter how he polls or when exactly he drips out, because he's no ones second choice and he's not going anywhere in this election. I doubt he will ever even be a senator. Warren or Bernie can still pull off a big upset. If not, it's still Biden. He doesn't want anyone sociopathic and DULL as Pete in the picture. Buttgig is so concerned with not seeming G A Y that he doesn't seem like anything. Black people HATE him and he'll never get anywhere without us.

by Anonymousreply 51December 8, 2019 12:51 AM

I feel the real reason they aren't behind Pete is because he is gay. Sure the black community would like a person of color to be the nominee but it appears that isn't going to happen so they will end up voting for a white candidate. It might end up they don't really show up in the numbers needed in 2020. Also I have seen more support for Trump from minorities than past republican candidates which could be very interesting. If Bernie or Warren were to be the nominee Trump wins again.

The choice won't be a gay man. Booker ain't gay, though hopefully Warren won't shy away from him the way that Hillary was convinced to as a running mate. Warren/Booker or Biden/Harris are the ticket. [QUOTE] Warren on Saturday steered away from directly responding to a question about whether she would release her tax returns from before 2008 if her fellow Democratic presidential candidate South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg made his fundraisers open to the press.

[QUOTE] The senator didn't say yes or no, but she made the argument she was focusing on the present. To her point, she has already released 10 years worth of her tax returns, which is more than President Trump or former President Barack Obama ever released. But Warren has also recently called for Buttigieg to release the names of his clients when he worked for the consulting firm McKinsey & Co. He began that job in 2007. Buttigieg's camp responded to Warren already, and called for her to release the returns in a show of transparency.

by Anonymousreply 63December 8, 2019 1:41 AM

Criticism and attacks are part of the job of being President. If he can't take it from a cranky old lady and a closeted black man, then he may as well give up. So, far, Pete is handling it well and showing the world that he is even tempered and a man of strength and character with nothing to hide. So these attacks on Pete may very well be biting someone like Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren on the butt and making THEM look bad.

by Anonymousreply 78December 8, 2019 4:34 AM

According to the research and articles, it appears as though traditional democrats (blacks people included) believe that the only way to beat Trump is with a traditional white, male candidate.

The problem isn't the popular vote. There are way more democrats than there are republicans. And quite frankly the democratic candidate in 2020 will probably win the popular vote by 5 million votes, according to some recent predictions. The issue is the electoral college and a few key states.

This is why some of us wanted this primary season to be a short one so that the eventual nominee could start building campaign infrastructure early in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin and in a few other swing states. All the resources that are now being spent on primary candidates could be being used on one nominee and a bunch of House and Senate races.

by Anonymousreply 91December 8, 2019 1:48 PM

You moron at r91, black people (and especially black women) are the MOST loyal of Democratic voters; long after the white people largely abandoned the party for the racist Republicans, the AA 's have stuck with the party over the years through thick and thin, and frankly, I think they deserve some special consideration for their unwavering loyalty.

And R78, Booker is going to try and guilt white people into voting for him. Ever since Kamala dropped out, he's taken the opportunity to get on CNN and MSNBC bemoaning the fact that the race is turning into a competition between all white men. That's Cory. There's no opportunity he won't take advantage of . When there was a mass shooting, he was all over the place talking about gun violence. When he attacked Joe Biden with his well rehearsed Koolaid joke, he was all over the place gloating. When Pete was having problems with the black community in South Bend, Cory reminded everyone that he no one knows the ghetto like he does because he's from Camden. When PAC came out with an ad in his favor, he was all over the place pretending that he never saw the ad before. He's nothing more than an opportunist. There is nothing genuine about him. He should change his name to Cory BookMe.

I don't think it's her plan itself that's knocked her out so much as opposed to how she's handled the whole issue, exposing a deflective and duplicitous approach. Bernie has been upfront and candid from jump about his (similar) plan and people like his honesty. It appears that people are more turned off by her style and personality than her plan. I'm not a Bernie bro either btw, just calling it as I see it.

by Anonymousreply 119December 12, 2019 4:30 PM

White people need to let go of Mayo Pete. We can't even trust him to hire LGBTQ+ individuals for his cabinet, why throw our weight behind him? Another corporate shill who too comfortable turned his back on his community until his early 30s. Pete wasn't in the community prior to that and he wasn't helping anybody but himself with his McKinsey paychecks. His time in the military at best a tick on his "JFK cosplay" checklist and at worst an unnecessary stint in the military industrial complex.

Anybody still pushing Pete is 1) not actually a Democrat 2) blinded by identity politics.

by Anonymousreply 120December 12, 2019 4:40 PM

Some people come out when they're ready to come out, this shouldn't be an issue. Everybody's life and circumstances are different from the lives of others, you have no idea what they're going through. Of course, the flaming shopbottoms who were Richard Simmons-level gay from the moment that they were pushed out of their mother's cunts will never understand this.

by Anonymousreply 121December 12, 2019 6:04 PM

R121: my point is that in CURRENT society it would make more sense for the first gay president to have the confidence of a person who has been proudly out their entire life. Not a revolutionary concept and I am not blaming Pete- he was unfortunately born too early in time and does not exhibit the confidence and security in his sexuality necessary to withstand the homophobia he will face in the general.

The last line of your post is laughable as well. I am sure you are so very masculine and nobody ever suspect you were gay! What an irrelevant point- it doesn't matter whether Pete is flamboyant or not. There are people who could find a man getting spit-roasted and would still take him at face value if he said he was straight.

by Anonymousreply 122December 12, 2019 6:15 PM

He's already experience plenty of homophobia and has handled it just fine. So everybody should come screaming out of the closet when they're teenagers? Sorry, that's not how the real world works. People come out when they're ready.

by Anonymousreply 123December 12, 2019 6:22 PM

Warren is actually turning into a nightmare right now. Total identity crisis of her campaign on full display. She gave Pete grief for McKinsey - that ended up being nothing. She gave him grief for holding closed fundraisers that she also held just last year - he opened those to the press. Now she's just said in a speech in New Hampshire that he's got his big donors on speed dial, to essentially do their bidding. He has also released his bundlers list, which the Biden's, Booker's, and Klobuchar's campaigns have refused to do. Warren seems to have no problem with them for some reason.

Now take a look at the outrageous attendance fees for one of her 2012 fundraisers, held by the same guy who held a fundraiser for Pete yesterday. Those were closed to the press as well, by the way.

Warren's a liar. She lied about being Native and she'll lie about anything else.

Still chuckling over a Warren supporter in another Pete thread describing her as "quite pure". I mean, it's clear that no one would be able to get away with calling her just 'pure'.

by Anonymousreply 126December 12, 2019 6:42 PM

She wanted to rebrand herself as the purest of them all. Sucks for her that her past practices (up to and including 2018) are getting in the way of that. 😄

by Anonymousreply 127December 12, 2019 6:47 PM

R123: absolutely not, but cute deflection. Pete didn't come out until his 30's, this would be a separate conversation had he come out in his teens. Perhaps I misspoke earlier, instead of out their "entire life" perhaps "most" of their life would be sufficient? That would mean Pete can run in.... 30 more years!

R124: I am losing interest in Warren as well, but to say nothing came out of her efforts is wrong. We've already discovered information from Pete's time at McKinsey that seriously jeopardizes his chances in Michigan, which is a crucial state.

by Anonymousreply 128December 12, 2019 6:48 PM

[quote]We've already discovered information from Pete's time at McKinsey that seriously jeopardizes his chances in Michigan, which is a crucial state.

You mean the tinfoil-hat conspiracy theory that his three months of working on PP presentations on a project at Blue Cross to cut costs for travel and facilities in 2007 led to layoffs in 2009, a year after the worst recession in living memory started?

The same conspiracy theory that the Blue Cross manager who's been working there for 20 years refuted in a press release the other day? This is some Trumpian-level shit that we on the left shouldn't be falling for. And yet here we are. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 132December 12, 2019 7:07 PM

R129: Trumpian shit? There is a clear line from point A to B, whether Pete was instrumental to the layoffs or not does not change the fact he was involved. The manager may have cleared his name earnestly, but it is naive to think Pete's team isn't capable of offering some sort of quid pro quo for that clearance.

Point is, there's information that puts him in a precarious position in a crucial state. Whether it's true doesn't change how it will affect voters. He does 0% with black people. What else do you need? How can you think he'd win the general?

by Anonymousreply 133December 12, 2019 7:09 PM

Your entire first paragraph is Trumpian in that it has absolutely nothing to do with objective facts. Trading in debunked conspiracy theories that even the hardcore socialist Twitter has abandoned by now… pure, unadulterated desperation on your part.

[quote]He does 0% with black people.

Ahhh... there we go. When all else fails, the mask slips and the four-month-old talking point that now has no basis in recent polls comes out. You might want to check out MSNBC - even they have decided to abandon that statistic.

by Anonymousreply 134December 12, 2019 7:17 PM

The "0% support with black people" phrase is rapidly becoming the new "but her emails!"

by Anonymousreply 135December 12, 2019 7:23 PM

It is not a conspiracy theory to state that Pete consulted for a company that later went on to enact massive layoffs. That is fact. At issue is Pete's level of involvement. Answer is: it doesn't matter to the voters in Michigan, I can guarantee you that.

A marginal improvement in his numbers with black people as the list of candidates slims down is expected. It does not change the fact that black people do not support him (and with good reason.) Maybe examine why you are so quick to dismiss Pete's racism when there are other viable candidates.

by Anonymousreply 141December 12, 2019 9:46 PM

Pete Buttigieg is raising money from Silicon Valley’s billionaires — even as Elizabeth Warren attacks him for it

A host list circulated to prospective donors for an event on Monday morning in Palo Alto, California, features individuals with family ties to some of the most prominent people in Big Tech. Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings is listed as a co-host of the event, as is Nicole Shanahan, the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin; Wendy Schmidt, the wife of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt; and Michelle Sandberg, the sister of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, sources say.

I read today that in 2011, Warren had fundraisers including one with Barbara Streisand, that were $1,000-$5,000 a “donation.”

“Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren is Democratic Hollywood's new "It girl," a status that will be ratified Tuesday, Nov. 1 when the party's local elder statesman, Norman Lear, and his wife Lynn host a fundraiser for the Harvard Law professor and consumer advocate, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

“The event's cohosts include a cross section of the Democrats' industry reliables, including Barbra Streisand, Steve Bing, Rhea Perlman, Danny DeVito, Marge Tabankin, Hans Zimmer and Lorraine and Sid Sheinberg. Donations are scaled from $1,000 to $5,000 with organizers anticipating a large crowd gathering for the fundraiser the Lear estate.[...]

“Hollywood's support is often a mixed blessing, however. [Opponent Scott] Brown has sharply criticized Warren, who according to the Washington Post has raised about 70 percent of her money outside of Massachusetts, as the candidate of elite and celebrity interests.“
