I see this at least once a week. Usually at CVS, but it was Modell’s yesterday. A belligerent black person storming out of the store, shouting, and the store employees following and standing just outside the store, sometimes shouting “Drop the merchandise, sir/ma’am”. Sometimes the store gets some of the merchandise back if they drop it on the street. Usually the thief saunters off to the subway, occasionally looking back. The teenagers work in packs and they like to destroy stuff on their way out and they RUN.

As someone who has worked in high end retail for over 15 years, I can tell you that "loss prevention" is absolutely motivated by race specifically. Everyone shoplifts. We see it all day, every day. As sales people, we are specifically instructed to never stop or approach anyone if we see it, but to leave it to loss prevention officers to deal with. These loss prevention officers are specifically trained to watch people who do not look like they represent our "typical" or "ideal" client (i.e. black, brown, poor people). If a white or rich-looking individual steals from us, the company writes it off as the cost of doing business. But if a black or brown person does and is seen wearing our products, then it is a degradation of the brand image. So yes, this is absolutely a racist issue. Also, if you ever see an employee who is not specifically a loss prevention officer going after a shoplifter, they are deviating from company training. There is absolutely a personal reason motiving that employee to intervene, and its usually racial.

You cannot touch or attempt to physically restrain shoplifters EVER. They can sue your asses off and will.

R63 As someone who worked in all walks of retail for 12 years, including at Barney's, most of the people that steal stuff do tend to be POC and lower class individuals. That doesn't mean that the only people that shoplift are poor black people (god knows I've dealt with my share of kleptomaniac bitch fraus), but sometimes it's okay to call a spade a spade. I will say this, though, both white and ethnic shoplifters have been assholes when confronted, but only the people of color were violent.

Indeed, my experience of 40 years in a major store in nyc is its the black chicks who steal and run.
