Valentine (off of her second biggest album) would've been a great international hit
if it was released in January & allowed to climb the charts in time for Valentine's Day.

Belinda's third biggest album should've had the Susanna Hoffs (Bangles lead singer) co-written song as a follow up to "Mad About You".
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 5, 2019 5:44 PM |
It seemed like the Belinda record label would release mostly mid tempo songs (never the fastest upbeat songs or love ballads) here in the US.
"I Plead Insanity" from her fourth biggest album would've been a great dance floor number for mainstream radio at the time.
Her first two singles off the album (released here in the US) weren't my favorite tracks on the album & went nowhere for her.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 5, 2019 5:51 PM |
And finally, "Where Love Hides" off of her fifth album would've been a great love ballad to release in the fall of 1993 for radio play (a direct opposite of "I Plead Insanity")..
The music is subdued & allows her vocals to shine. The song will probably be considered one of her "timeless classics".

Real McCoy should've released the closest thing to a ballad they had as a follow up to "Another Night".
"Sleeping With An Angel" did have some lesbian undertones with the girls vocals saying "she" (instead of he) so maybe the label shied away from it pre-Melissa Etheridge.

Expose should've released "December" off of their debut album as the final single in November 1987. It had all the makings of a top 10 US hit.
"Seasons Change" (their #1 hit in the US) should've been the fourth single released in August 1987 (erasing "Let Me Be The One" as a single altogether).
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 5, 2019 7:33 PM |

Boy George's first solo album (summer '87) should've released "To Be Reborn" here in the US. instead of the loopy title song "Sold".
This one could've mended fences with fans & radio stations who weren't thrilled with his drug problems around that time.
It was released in the UK as single #3 & hit #13 there (looks like his best single showing worldwide with this album).

Boy George's fifth solo album should've had "If I Could Fly" as the first single worldwide (minus the talking/answering machine crap at the start of many of his hit packed album songs).
It's a shame the entire album is considered a failure as it should've put him back as the creative voice/artist that he was always meant to be.

Finally, Samantha Fox's fourth album ('91) didn't have any top 40 singles to speak of here in the US & went nowhere.

I think a lot of people overestimate how popular some albums are. I love Tori Amos, but Choirgirl isn't exactly super popular. However, Scarlet's Walk was wildly popular with her first real hit via "Sorta Fairytale". This song is the best on the album. Carbon talks about a descent into drug abuse and contains the famous Gaiman reference.

Oh, my God, THANK you, r156! I want to block them, but for some reason, the WW/block icons aren't showing up for me.
But anyway, Fleetwood Mac's "Straight Back" is a great song and probably should've been a single, but the recording could've been much better and rocked a little harder. I'm guessing it's one of those situations with Lindsey being a spiteful asshole and half-assing the production of Stevie's song. Imagine if Jimmy Iovine had produced it.

It cemented my love for her, given her previous proclamations of sobriety, and along with the 'Joan Jett and I would serve people we didn't like pee popsicles' story, certified her badassedness.

"You Rat, You."
An incidental song from "The Night They Raided Minsky's." The song and the performance were both terrific, but did not figure prominently in the film and were largely forgotten.
Just a few years later, the composer, Charles Strouse, recycled the song. It got new lyrics and was turned into a ballad in 3/4 time for his musical ANNIE.

R343 Now you are just spouting some nonsense. Destination Unknown is considered a classic and was on the hot 100 for 13 weeks. Hardly a track that went nowhere. Go to any dance club with an 80s night and Destination Unknown is one of the go-to songs. Here and Now is a good track, but I don't think it's something that would have taken well with a larger audience.
by Anonymous | reply 348 | January 4, 2020 7:18 PM |
R348 I get my facts from Wiki not from a 80s night playlist from a club that might not be around in a year. Plenty of songs have stayed on the US Hot 100 but aren't considered hits. "DU" wasn't a #1, top 10 or even a top 20 hit for the group (that I'm a big fan of to this day). It's not much of a hit but as you described it: "a classic".
95% of the US know George Michael for "Faith" & Cyndi for "Girls Just Wanna..." but 99% of the US doesn't know Missing Persons for "DU" & that's the bottom line. Probably 90% of the country isn't even aware of the group now that they have faded further into obscurity. I didn't know for instance that lead singer Dale had a solo album out in '88 after the band broke up (with Prince's help no less).
Brighter Day - Robin S (from her debut album in '93, should've been the 2nd single instead of "Love For Love" which stalled at #53 here in the US).
