You've never seen or heard of Miracle of 34th St one of the most famous films of all time?

by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 4, 2019 10:13 PM |
R2 he was disfigured in a car crash and disappeared for many years, when he came back, Hollywood was dead. But he was the hottest thing ever

In an interview many years ago Joan Collins said that one of the first things she wanted to do when she reached Hollywood was to meet John Payne.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 4, 2019 10:21 PM |
R6 That was edited. She said she wanted to fuck John Payne.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 4, 2019 10:24 PM |
Yes that's the one. With Taylor Swift.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 4, 2019 10:31 PM |
I remember when she interviewed Jane Russell, she said something along the lines of ' oh you had hard times, but you had an affair with JOHN PAYNE, so you DEFINITELY had a good time too, ! ' Jane smiled and said..'well...YES'.

jane russell was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too classy to be on this show... and joan just wouldn't let it go!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 5, 2019 12:46 PM |
Long legs, too short trunk. He was oddly shaped, which is why he looks best in photographs taken from a certain angle.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 5, 2019 12:49 PM |
I'll take him. The short torso comes from the swimming trunk tucked all the way up to the armpits. Not short perfect.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 5, 2019 1:04 PM |
His muscular build kind of ruins it. I prefer the slim Handsomeness of Gregory Peck from that time period.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 5, 2019 1:05 PM |
Saw GOOD NEWS. He was dull, but I wiah I had known his beefcake history.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 5, 2019 1:06 PM |
R2 he was HUGE !!!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 5, 2019 1:16 PM |
I wonder if he ever engaged in the homosex.... Here he is with Randolph Scott in To The Shores Of Tripoli (1942).

Photographed by the legendary George Hurrell, with a Gable-esque mustache.

(Though the shitty mustache was a mistake....)

Rich boy prep who grew up in a slaver's mansion in Virginia.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 5, 2019 3:26 PM |
Aside from his beauty, he was an excellent actor -- very natural and likeable on screen. I think a large part of the success of MIRACLE ON 34th STREET is that he's so utterly likeable in a role that might have come across far less so if someone else had played it. Some of the other actors in the movie have the occasional false moments, but not JP.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 5, 2019 4:05 PM |
He could also sing very well, as the clip with Betty Grable above shows, so he was also used in quite a few 20th Century Fox musicals. He was in a terrible car crash later on, but did have plastic surgery that was mostly successful, and he started acting again. Very handsome guy, and a talented actor/singer, too. What a hottie! Kris Kringle lucked out to have him as a roommate!
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 5, 2019 4:25 PM |
Why were men's swim suits and even pants so high back in the 30s/40s? It's very frustrating.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 5, 2019 4:40 PM |
Hike your pants up so that the waistband is center over your naval, r45. That's where your actual waist is.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 5, 2019 4:44 PM |
Why was I partnered with Mickey fucking Rooney and Karl 'alfalfa' whatnot ? THAT'S very frustrating !
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 5, 2019 4:46 PM |
That's quite a nice photo R48
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 5, 2019 6:50 PM |
I only know him from Miracle on 34th Street. He reminds me of Kevin Spacey (or vice versa I guess.)
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 5, 2019 6:58 PM |
Yes he looks exactly like Kevin Spacey.

OK tasteful friends, what the hell kind of costume de bains is Monsieur Payne sporting in R48?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 5, 2019 8:13 PM |
I want to nibble on that lower lip for days.

Who are you calling false? You take that back this minute or I'll come over there and give you what for!

He had an amazing "V" shaped torso that may seem curious now, but it was THE ideal 1940s male figure, perfect for sharply tailored double breasted suits.
He was extremely smart and well-spoken, and made one of the best celebrity questioners on WHAT'S MY LINE? He played to win.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 5, 2019 10:27 PM |
[quote]He had an amazing "V" shaped torso that may seem curious now, but it was THE ideal 1940s male figure,
Are you suggesting that a V-shaped torso on a man is not currently in fashion -- and won't always be? Are you on drugs?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 6, 2019 4:30 PM |
r40: Todays taste would demand much more pumped pecs and arms, but that is the most extreme 'V' I've ever seen. That waist is TINY .
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 6, 2019 4:43 PM |
Sorry, meant r60. See what I mean? John had the "V" of "V"s.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 6, 2019 4:46 PM |
R58 I love it but my 2019 aesthetic finds the production levels so shabby.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 6, 2019 4:58 PM |
Did John Payne have slutty "playboy" phases? Was he a faithful husband? Man whore?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 6, 2019 5:01 PM |
When I was a little boy and thought John Wayne was the greatest thing ever, I used to sometimes see movies with John *Payne* in the TV guide and eagerly wait til they were on to watch them, then be bitterly disappointed to see Wayne wasn’t in the movie. That happened at least twice! How embarrassing.
As a matter of fact, John Payne was indeed beautiful, but his costar in MOTFS was even more so.

Oh my god, they died together? Was it a car crash or murder suicide?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 6, 2019 5:13 PM |
Why is he wearing spanx @R5?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 6, 2019 5:24 PM |
In other pics, Payne's pic doesn't look SO small in comparison to his chest as in the pic at R61. Anyway, my main point is that a V-shaped torso is still, and always will be, the ideal for a male.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 6, 2019 6:29 PM |
Sorry, I meant: In other pics, Payne's WAIST doesn't look SO small in comparison to his chest as in the pic at [R61].

I 've never seen si much of a golden age star.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 6, 2019 7:26 PM |
The famous "Kid Nightingale" photo with his bulging cock and balls in the silk boxing trunks is so hot I'm surprised it was publicly released at the time (1939) . Movie stills were often rejected or retouched if considered too suggestive or revealing.
The original Betty Grable over-her-shoulder pin-up showed her ass crack which had to be airbrushed away to get the censors approval.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | December 6, 2019 7:39 PM |
John Payne's 2nd wife was the very talented Gloria DeHaven, who unfortunately never really became a very big star at MGM despite a beautiful singing voice. Here she is singing "Who's Sorry Now", which was introduced in vaudeville by her mother, who she is portraying in this clip.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | December 6, 2019 7:48 PM |

R84, he also didn’t have the pleasure of Guy Madison fucking him in the back seat of a Buick.

I don't know who that guy is @R85, but I googled more pictures. Damn, he was gorgeous.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | December 7, 2019 5:04 PM |
R87, Watch "Till the End of Time" on TCM the next time it's aired. Guy Madison is hot as fuck in it and he has a couple of shirtless scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | December 7, 2019 5:16 PM |
No. John Payne still wins.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 7, 2019 7:08 PM |
What makes them all gorgeous esp. Clint Howard, is their glorious hairy chests. Literary tall, dark and handsome. Just gorgeous.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | December 7, 2019 7:19 PM |
Oh fuck, Clint WALKER. I meant!
by Anonymous | reply 91 | December 7, 2019 7:20 PM |
R90 clint walker: add in his super masculine manner, his baritone voice and his natural built physique and height and come on! he was THEE walking wet dream of his era.. and no man since has been his match or the same type in hollywood.
guy madison was so damn pretty..
i would also add steve reeves, who was a perfect combination of pretty boy and masculine handsome... perhaps the most perfect example ever of those 2 opposing male hot description in/of looks.
sword and sandal star and former bodybuilder reg park was also a slab of beefcake with his beard in those hercules and other movies.
mike henry as tarzan with dark virile look to him, that deep voice and that hairy ripped chiseled physique and the smallest loincloth of any tarzan ever!
by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 7, 2019 8:02 PM |
Gloria DeHaven did a night club act in Windsor, Ont. All the senior kids went there after prom. That's how low she fell.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 8, 2019 5:23 PM |
I saw Good News the night Alice Faye's Donald Brooks couture gown open in the back and you could see the waist band of her pantyhose and the mike wire running down her back. John Payne was dancing with her and he was still super handsome, but both were too bland on stage and the show was weak.
I was dating Donald Brooks at the time and he wanted to introduce me to Alice and John, but I was too shy.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 8, 2019 5:49 PM |
R94 are you CRAZY ??? YOU COULD HAVE MET JOHN PAYNE !!!!
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 8, 2019 5:58 PM |
Why were the movie stars of that era so much more handsome than those of today?
by Anonymous | reply 96 | December 8, 2019 5:58 PM |
Because they were seared and brought up by real men and women, not the degenerated single mother fraus that we have now. Who couldn't raise a chicken.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 8, 2019 6:22 PM |
I went to an MGM stars reunion at Carnegie Hall; it must have been the mid-to-late 1980s. I saw Ann Miller outside the stage door with her huge pile of hair (rumor is one time she fell and it broke!). Anyway, the best performers that night who attended and who still really had it at top level were Gloria DeHaven and Tony Martin, who in his late 80s or early 90s still sounded wonderful singing "All The Things You Are", I believe. Gloria, I think, sang "Who's Sorry Now" beautifully. I think Ginger Rogers was there, perhaps Mickey Rooney, don't think Jane Powell or Debbie Reynolds made it that evening, but there was a pretty big representation of what was MGM that evening. Google hasn't helped yet in my search for the details.

B-movie actor. Second string Tyrone Power when he was at Fox. Went on to freelance in bad Universal films, then episodic tv. Hardly a leading man.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 8, 2019 7:48 PM |
R98: I'll bet Rooney was there---probably mugging for any cameras present and hoping someone would cast him in something, anything, so he could pay his wives' alimony.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | December 8, 2019 7:49 PM |
Tyrone Power was in the top 3 most popular leading men in Hollywood for his entre career. A second string to that is still a big deal. Cunt
by Anonymous | reply 101 | December 8, 2019 7:56 PM |
Not at a relatively small studio like Fox.

[quote]OK tasteful friends, what the hell kind of costume de bains is Monsieur Payne sporting in [R48]?
I recall reading somewhere that the suit was of his own design, and he even tried marketing it. It looks like it might be just a piece of fabric, wrapped around and fastened by tying the corners together, and might "accidentally" come untied pretty easily!
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 8, 2019 11:44 PM |
R98, I saw that show, and yes, I remember how beautifully Tony Martin sang, even at his very advanced age. It was quite extraordinary.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | December 9, 2019 2:59 AM |
I guess it was the show, though I seem to have remembered it being sometime in the 80s. Hell, 20, 25 or 30 years in the past seems about the same by now. It was a fun evening. I don't know if there were any changes between the two nights in terms of who performed.
