Hong Kong was originally ceded to the British empire...
...due to pressure from the British military in the Opium Wars. That was a war in which Britain helped foster the trade of illegal opium into China, causing harm to the Chinese people. China tried to stop that trade. The British objected because of a loss of revenue and attacked.
Through different agreements Britain had a 99-year lease on most of Hong Kong that ended in 1997.
Hong Kong is a wealthy democratic country still under some constraints of China.
Unfortunately, for Hong Kong, economic tie with China is impossible to break. Industrial/agriculture is non-existence. The whole economy is base on trading. Wealth is all tie up in real estate, which is a bubble waiting to be burst.
Unlike Singapore another city-state, that once gained independence, the very first step the founder took was cut the economy tie with Malaysia. It cost a lot of hardship for the citizens initially but was a necessary step because any economic tie would eventually expose the new government for interference.

China is too large, too powerful and now too rich to be challenged from the outside.
